This review is more about Strange Donuts as a whole than this location specifically.First of all, it’s an inferior knockoff of Portland’s Voodoo Doughnuts. The donuts themselves are not all that “strange,” despite the name. They’re dense, cakey donuts, which I am not a fan of. Not a big selection, either. This time, I tried the gooey butter donut and a coffee, which was about $5 total. The coffee was the highlight, actually.
We went a few weeks ago and we were really disappointed by the quality. When Strange first opened, I remember waiting in lines around the block for their crazy donuts. Everything was super fresh and looked just like their photos online. However, this time when we went in a lot of the donuts looked like theyd been sitting out for a while. They were misshapen and poorly decorated. The taste was subpar at best.It really seems like they couldnt keep up with their own popularity - and I dont really think they were worth going to anymore.
My 2nd favorite donut place in the country. I love going here and trying the different creations. If I wanted normal donuts theres plenty of others. You come here for thr uniqueness
Good donuts. My kids and I enjoy walking here in the mornings.
Great selection. Polite service person. Great taste in donuts
Donuts are excellent. The taste and texture of the gooey butter cake was just amazing.
One of my favourite quotes from an employee at Strange Donuts is oh, well you can always get maple bacon donuts here, so Id go with the other one. Not only was the other one (blackberry jelly) really delicious, but the fact that there is a place that ALWAYS has maple bacon donuts ready to eat is just too good. Happy to be in this world at the same time as Strange Donuts.
Maple bacon dones are the best but i love them all
Great donuts! Totally enjoyed!
Good donuts. Pricey and the place is super tiny and a sprucing up wouldnt hurt.
Try not to lose the love this started with. Keep up the good work. Let’s get a coronavirus doughnut.. haha
My favorite donut shop on planet Earth
Truly fabulous! The gentleman always greets you with a smile and is in a good mood. Is calm and just takes great care of you!
These doughnuts never disappoint, the fact you can get a dozen maple bacon doughnuts to take home and drink bourbon with just makes it that much better.
Strange donuts, the name says it all. But maybe we should add delicious to their name. No matter what kind of donut it is, they all taste amazing if your feeling a bit adventurous. My wife and her two friends make it an annual tradition to go to a strange location during the holidays. We will keep this tradition going for many years to come.
A tiny hole in the wall! Went there because of their menu but they did not have the items listed online. Otherwise, good donuts!
Excellent, fresh not over sweet like nation chains
This place is great. I always love going in here because the people are always very nice. Great donuts. Some are a tad dry so worth getting some coffee or milk to go with it. The space is small. Still definitely worth a try.
Used to love coming here since it was one of the only places I could get vegan donuts pretty much any time. Suddenly went from having vegan donuts almost every day to never having them. Its out of the way but we started going to other locations. Kind of disappointing.
This place has great and unique options. Their menu changes every month, but one that doesnt is the Gooey Butter Done. Cant go wrong with that one. One thing that separates Strange from the rest is their Strangers. They are special collaborations with other vendors to produce some unique creations. Only available on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, the Strangers are different each weekend.
LOVED it! Good selection of unique vegan flavors. Super sweet staff.
Go early to get the best selection. Lots of unique flavors. While its a small store front they have the best donuts in Kirkwood.
Fun people. Had a great gooey butter donut. There were Strange items left at 1pm. Got a turtle for my boss. They had maple/bacon donut. Couldnt bring myself for that one. NEAT PLACE
Really awesome! A bit more cost but so worth it.
The donuts are amazing! They have great flavor and arent dry. They are also a good price for the amount that your getting.
The friendliest people ever. Always get a stranger but the creations are so good. Its exactly like it sounds, there are strange donuts, but good vibes.
The Kirkwood location is a tiny store front (bakery hidden in the back) with room for a few customers, so on a busy night the line occasionally trails thru the door and onto the sidewalk! But always DELICIOUS (and often surprising) donuts, and super-helpful counter staffing. Theres a display of the regulars and specials of the day, so you can simply point-and-order your choice.
First visit my kids and wife loved it. My donut was very dry. I ordered the gooey butter cake donut. It was nothing like the cake.
I have to admit that I did not know Strange Donuts was in Kirkwood - amazing! They are so great and the best for a late night snack. I love this place.
Way, way, WAY too sweet. What doh! nuts Id tried.I appreciate these are confectionery pastries, yet the flavors you use do stand on their own with a little less sugars.Allow some savory, texture, and creaminess to come though, please.
We ordered donuts for our sons birthday party. The donuts were delicious!! Customer service here is fantastic!!
Always fire. Last time I dropped in I picked up this sweet thang (i forgot its name) and it was DELICIOUS.Staff is always friendly and fun to talk to. Cant wait til there are more vegan options!
Great service, but donuts need work. They do look good but the names dont fit the taste. Gooybutter and French toast should not taste similar. 6 donuts and a little milk for $15 definitely not worth going back to.
My son wants to get donuts here everyday. They come up with some pretty good stuff. The donut dealers are friendly too. There is not seating inside, but plenty of benches and picnic tables in the nearby grassy areas to sit and enjoy.
I find their donuts to be fresh and flavorful, and the service to be fast and very friendly. They offer standard donut types along with deluxe types with inventive names and flavors. I find both types to be delicious. Recent donuts purchased are: the Fat Steve, Gooey Butter Cake, Snowball, Jean Claude Van Graham. All received rave reviews from all who tasted them at work.
If you havent been to strange Donuts then you are missing out. You can get some seriously creative Suites for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This makes it a great place for work events, that is to say not to eat here, but to order here and take it to work.
Unique donuts that are large. They had Good flavors, but not extraordinary. The shop in Kirkwood was dirty and appeared to be a long ago abandoned car garage. The service was very good.
Went there while visiting a friend in Kirkwood. I like the idea of an ever-changing menu of donuts. When we were there they said that they had a back-to-school themed set. Which was a good idea.I was sort of disappointed in the donuts themselves though.I got a ding dong donut, which was a dense cake donut, filled with vanilla cream. It was good, but very rich. Its not something that I would eat more than one of. Its definitely a one-and-done type situation. My friend had gotten an Oreo one, which was more or less the same thing. Its the sort of place that would be nice to keep going back to, just to experience the different types of they have. Its not the sort of place that is good as a one-off I feel.
They may only have half a dozen choices to choose from but their donuts are always fresh and good
There’s always fun and unique flavors to try here and the staff is super chill!
I went to Strange Donuts last Thanksgiving and it was such a welcoming atmosphere. Just amazing over all. We walked by and smelled cinnamon and got intrigued. We saw it was closed but the door was open and there was an employee. He said, Hey sorry were closed but if you want to come back in 15 minutes you can taste test a new donut. So we came back and the donuts where incredible. I got a long sleeved shirt that says Happy Dones from their collaboration with Happy Joes. I definitely want to go back on my trip to Kirkwood that Im leaving for in 2 days. Hope to see some donuts soon:)
Im a fatty at heart - I absolutely love the food that will inevitably kill me. Tried strange donuts today, expecting to fall in love like the rest of you guys.Service was great. Shirts were cool. Donuts looked amazing. The blue velvet one was the third one I tried. It was absolutely disgusting. I couldnt finish it. The icing tasted like generic grocery store white frosting. The donut tasted like baking soda. My husband and I couldnt finish it - it was just bad bad baaaaad... :(The gooey butter cake donut was just okay. Tasted neither gooey nor buttery, but it was... Okay. Looked better than it tasted. The maple bacon donut was just alright. Ive had better. Not going back. I respect what theyre doing though. Stl needs something like thisEDIT: I ate my words and went back and got a vegan donut - I went vegan a couple of weeks ago so I figured Id try a vegan donut from a place I knows that sells them. It was the best effing donut Ive ever had. Very very good. Changed my review from 3 stars to 4
Awesome. Always. If you like corporate places you may find yourself a little of balance, which is all the more reason to go.You should avoid patronizing big chains anyway.
I like the unique variety of flavors that change often. My favorite are the ones filled with some kind of fruit/jelly. I also like the vegan donuts which are suprisingly delicious.
Donuts are good and there are different flavors to try every day. Coffee too strong for my liking, and I usually like string coffee.
They have great donuts with interesting flavors that change daily. They are also pet friendly with a water bowl outside the door, and they invited my dog inside the store.
The average person may love this place. Im not a fan of sweets to the extent that the doughnut are covered in. Traditional glaze would do me fine.
Great and super friendly service. Justin was so sweet to my little guy. We love the gluten-less gonuts as my son lovingly calls them!!
Super nice staff AND they have vegan options and almond milk! Sooooo yummy. I will be coming back often.
Unique donut flavors. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great prices, highly recommend.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! First time here today...tried the maple bacon donut..and instantly fell in love...it was like 3 different breakfast items all in one bite...I will definately be back....got more flavors to try!!!! Thanks !!!
Love that I can call and ask what the gluten free donut is on Friday and Saturday. And that they put them on the top rack so less change of crumbs!
The best and most unusual donuts in St. Louis! Every month has a new selection of unique and delicious flavors, plus a lot of great collaboration with local businesses.
Love love love these donuts. Usually not a sweets person, but the maple bacon donut was a delicious mix of sweet and salty. Yummm 👅
THEIR DOUNUTS ARE THE BEST!!!!I would DEFINATELY recommend going there!
Highly disappointed in the quality for the price. I’ve had donuts from Wal-Mart that taste better. My kids didn’t even like most of them. Staff is friendly and there are a lot of unique flavors, but I wasn’t impressed. Honestly? I prefer Krispy Kreme.
Most I wouldnt hold strange but uncommon, they usually have gluten free a few that are regulars and then a handful of whatever they feel like making that day, the worst Ive ever had was meh its okay my favorites are the smores I think they called campfire and the gooey butter. Theyre not the cheapest Donuts but dollar value ratio is really good.
Good donuts. I get the Gooey Butter Cake donut usually. Only problem is they only make so many for the day so when its gone its gone.
Tiny little hole in the wall shop with unique and yummy donut flavors. Fun and inexpensive.
We had a nice experience here the gentleman that put our donut order together was really friendly and nice to the kiddos.
Used to be better when they first opened. Now their donuts taste stale like theyve made them weeks in advance. I would say Tim Hortons or Krispy Kreme is better now just on freshness alone.
Stay Strange! If your from out of town and you want good dones go to strange. and then get the gooey butter, a STL staple.
Best place for great tasting donuts!
Tried this place based on reviews. Maybe i came on an off day, but the donuts i had tasted old and stale. Ive had better at krispy kream for a third of the price. Very disappointed.
I just had the best blueberry iced gluten free donuts. 😍😍😍 The staff was super friendly and they laughed at my silly jokes.
Good a-typical donuts, which is why it is strange, which is why people go.
Good donuts. Definitely different. The Maple Bacon is solid.
Had a supervisor bring Strange Donuts to a meeting and the combination dones were amazing. My wife has never tried them but she will on mothers day.
Very friendly employee. Donuts are great. They are open late!
Always greeted like family when I go in. Donuts are always unique and phenomenal!
Such wonderful staff! Absolutely fantastic!
They have interesting creations that sound good. To bad the donuts are stale and somehow soggy at the same time with a awful taste. I could over look the horribly strange donut if it didnt cost 2 bucks.
No flavor and overpriced. Ive been to both St. Louis locations a few times thinking maybe they will be better this time. They look good. I should have learned my lesson the last time. You cant judge a book by its cover. Their donuts are always dry and stale, and though their toppings and fillings - on the rare occassion - have an acceptable flavor, their donuts always fall flat. Strange Donuts is overrated. They are brand makers, not bakers.
Really good doughnuts. The menu is unique. I with they had some of the classic doughnuts aswell as their unique ones but overall really good.
Great selection of classic, unusual, and out-of-this-world donuts. I love all the dones Ive had on my many visits.
Love the selection of items, great prices and staff.
Quirky donut flavors in micro-sized store
Really good 🍩. Try the maple and bacon... Awesome.
Best donuts ever.
The donuts are amazing!! I love all the flavors and getting a chance to try strangers!!
So we saw this establishment online when looking for a donut shop and thought wed check it out. Such a disappointment, hardly no donuts to choose from and out of waters...it wasnt even 11 a.m. Wish we had just gone to Dunkins.
I just love their donut creations!!!
Gluten free options
Love love their donuts.... Gooey butter donut is the best
Best donuts in STL hands down. Tried almost every thing they create and havent been disappointed yet. They have the classics of course, but where they shine is their strange donuts such as Barts Revenge which is a Butterfinger centric donut or the Fat Elvis which is made with Peanut Butter, Banana Pudding and Vanilla custard. Strange can be a bit pricy but for me its worth it.
Amazing weird combinations and at very reasonable prices
PRO: Person behind counter is friendly and very knowledgeable of the product. Answered every question I had quickly and authoritatively.CON: Not so strange. No red velvet; nothing with jalapeno (although the pb & sriracha is delicious); donuts were semi-tough, as if they had been baked the night before. Very pricey; $20 for a dozen (varies upon mix of low-end to high-end choices.)Someday Ill give the Maplewood location a chance, but I doubt Ill be back to the Kirkwood location (great employee notwithstanding).
To be fair were went ay the end of the day so there wasnt much to choose from. Will give it another try.
Staff is always fun to talk to, and I love their dones all day. A fun break from the mundane. Stay strange STL!!
Maybe I have broadened my donut horizons since I first fell in love with Strange. Truth is, I used to be obessed. I mean, a unique local business that SEEMED to be run by decent fun people? Im all in (even back when their donuts were better, they still werent the best by any means but I was strangely accepting of that). I used to go to both STL locations often and always wanted one of their basic donuts (Fat Steve)... But to my repeated disappointment, they were always sold out, no matter the time of day. So, I often left dissatisfied, trying something else and then having buyers remorse because while the novelty of it seemed tasty, the reality was that they were lackluster. These things arent cheap afterall. Side note: lets not pretend that bacon on top of a donut is strange. Its not. Nearly all donut places have that now. Anyway, moving on to their Strangers. They seemed to be brilliant in writing and in photos but they were way too premade (days maybe?), dry, small in size given the inflated price tag, and they looked NOTHING like their attractive online pics. I honestly once thought they gave me the wrong order when I looked at it! But back to their regular breakfast donuts. Over time they too began to be consistantly painfully dry and the filled donuts had barely any filling. I often would buy assorted dozens for breakfast for guests who would visit from out of town and they always found them to be underwhelming, not special and actually specifically requested that we try somewhere else instead (that says a lot to have a guest say that). Eventually my constant dissatisfaction caused me to try other donut businesses which I found to be cheaper and better all around, in most cases. Ultimately though, I stopped going to Strange Donuts when I saw repeated questionable online posts of theirs. Were they trying to be funny, and failing? Maybe they are just strange people? This was enough for me to put them in the back of my mind but I was still very open to visiting again in the future. However yesterday the owner represented themself in a way that I, and many others, found to be completely unprofessional on social media (yes, even given that they are a quirky donut business, this was in poor taste). This post has since been deleted. Maybe they realized they made the worst PR mistake ever and it would affect their profits? You arent a commedy club; youre a donut business. Posting controversial things from your business page has consequences and affects public opinion. Not only did I find this particular post completely offputting but they then started liking comment after comment after comment that supported an aggressive mean type of mentality. Standing by and expressing your beliefs is one thing (even if I do happen to disagree with it) but supporting people who name call and make fun of others is not my type of humor and is not who I give my business to. They managed to support blatantly sexist and racially ignorant comments yesterday and to me, ultimately came across bitter about their failed business venture, placing blame elsewhere instead of exiting in a classy way. There are too many other choices nearby for me to stick with this subpar one. They have other reviews on fb that point out other social media flops and racial problems within their business so this is not an isolated mistake. Also fun to note that I read their post to my husband and he literally for hours was insistent that their account must have been hacked because there is no way that a business would behave that way... Yeah. In addition to unapologetically putting their views out there (which is fine, but you have to deal with the fallout if some of your customers disagree) they seemed to have over the years, experienced growing pains and ultimately let quality slip in an effort to focus on expansion instead, and in the process got too cocky... forgetting that customer loyalty is not something to take for granted. One of their locations is now closed. So even though they blamed it on other rediculous causes, that speaks volumes.
Donuts were stale for a Sunday morning at 8 30 am. The wife got an Oreo donut with hardly any filling in it and the funfetti had about 3 pounds of icing on it. Disappointed to say the least. I prefer the donuts at Quiktrip.
Awesome donuts, very friendly staff, exactly what I wanted.
