Now I see why they have 2.1stars. They are overpriced and desperate. So desperate till the owner, John has to follow up and try to make you a deal. And when you offer your price, he goes off saying people like you.... and hung up. I seriously have not deal with such unprofessional so called business owners who claimed they have 800 cars.

DO NOT DO ANY BUSINESS WITH A-1 ECONOMY! Rented a car from here back in March. Picking up the car was pretty standard with no issues dropping the car off was the same. The women that checked in our car was very nice and easy to deal with. My fiancé was doing a once over on the car looking for anything we missed and picking up any trash we may have missed. A man walked over to her and I believe he was a manger and told her it looks great don’t worry about that little stuff we have people for that. So we grabbed our stuff and headed to the airport. We were billed our normal rate with no extras. About a month later we noticed an extra $48 charged to our card the day after the original charge. We called and asked about it and they told us there sales staff is working from home they will call us ASAP. No call ever came. After months of trying and being told the same thing and eventually being hung up on because they didn’t like I was very insistent to speak to someone now. I called Economy’s corporate customer service they said I need to send in an email to complain. I then sent the email, they responded by saying “they already told us why they charged us no refund.” That was the entire response! I wouldn’t be calling if I new why I was charged. So I then called back Economy and they then tell me oh it’s for a cleaning fee. I told them I would like to contest the charge. They told me I can’t do that, I would have to do it through my credit card. So we tried that and it was past 60 days so the credit card company wouldn’t do anything either. So we got screwed. Bad guys win again!

Masa (Oz) was so helpful, honest, and patient with us as we searched for a reliable, well-priced car. It was a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend him if you are in the market for a used car.

I made an account just to say how terrible they are, Im in the service industry and if I handle things the way they did id be fired. There are ways you handle people when you meet them and ways you dont. Didnt even greet me just yelled from the office, then the guy treated me poorly when he came outside. Do not shop here theyre over priced and dont deserve our business.

For your own sake, do not rent from them. 1. Picked up the car - full of dents, dirty, over 77k miles. 2. Drove like there was something wrong with it. 3. When I took it back they told me that I’d have to get an Uber back to the airport because it was going to be a while for a shuttle. 4. I told them how bad the car was and the guy told me they were putting me on a do not rent list 5. In retaliation, they made up a story about how I put something that wasn’t oil in the car and charged me an unauthorized $1000 for damages. I’m still trying to deal with that. Having never bought a vehicle from a used car dealership before, we were pleasantly surprised with a great experience. A huge and varied inventory allowed us to select the perfect car and Masa was very professional and cut us a deal that we couldnt refuse on a beautiful car. This auto shop is way different then other auto shops.. they are friendly, caring, and flexible.. I came in last Saturday and with in a hour and half they had me in a hell of a car!! If your military like this is a must go for all auto needs! Go see masaharu he really did hook me up!

Went in after reading the reviews, nothing too surprising. The lot is very packed, they have plenty of rental customers and they had a bigger variety of cars than I thought. I went in looking to buy, the sales associate was friendly and casual also very helpful did not rush me at all. But unfortunately the cars had a low overall quality with average prices like if you were to buy a trade in from a dealership but with out the repairs and refurbishment.another thing I noticed is they keep old info so the cars will look better or look like they havent been used as rentals and they also are almost all auction bought vehicles so they likely havent done anything to the cars since the purchase other than a wash. The manager plays aggressive and carefree, and has no interest in lowering the price so dont even try.The company likely doesnt know or care about any problems any of the cars have, so if youre willing to take a risk or if youre a car expert be my guest you may get lucky.

Shopping with Manny was the most amiable salesman experience Ive had. Went in to test drive and look around. This place gets one star because the owner is overly aggressive to the salesman.

If you dont want to waste your time and deal with a great staff thats very honest, then youve found A1. Big homie (I forgot your name bro) walked us through all of our options and is always ready to work with you. If you have any complaints then youre probably ALL IN your feelings after they told you the truth. I think A1 is great and I will definitely continue to do business with them in the future.

Rental pickup process took nearly an hour, and the car they gave us was in bad shape. On return they tried to charge a $100 cleaning fee, though the car was not unusually dirty.

Forget about it if you want to drive a nice new rental car.

Seriously I dont understand how this place is in business. We were looking to purchase a car, but they are a car rental place as well. They couldnt find the keys and then they couldnt find the car because they park all the cars on the street surrounding Target on Lawehana Street. The guy that helped us was unorganized and smelled like cigarettes. He was from the mainland but was trying to act local. He was rude and spoke to us like yeah man and you know! His name was Jack, he has a Donald trump style blonde hair. We left that A1 Auto Hawaii and went to another dealership where people treated us with respect and didnt rent out there cars before they sell them.

He was rude, accusatory, condescending and not willing to help at all. He did not even show the slightest bit of concern or remorse for me getting stranded AT NIGHT three different times. Finally, the day I returned their piece of garbage rental I asked for the owner, which was not any better at all. I asked for partial compensation due to the many inconveniences and headaches their car cost me. Although he “states he heard my concerns”, he also stated he would call me within 3 business days regarding a decision for partial refund, as if it really took that long to decipher that I should have been entitled to partial compensation. To add insult to injury he NEVER even gave the courtesy to call me, as he said he would! Heres the deal. They have fine cars, not the newest, but definitely the best rate out there. If youre not planning to spend a lot of time driving in Hawaii, (which you shouldnt - get back on the beach!) this is a great place to rent a car. As for the customer service, theyre super personable guys who will treat you right, just dont gripe about getting a 2014 car for 20% off of the 2016 rental from the other guys. Youre truly getting what you pay for, so dont complain and they will likely upgrade you (like they did me) because they get tired Im sure of the whiners like those providing negative reviews. If there was a NO Star, I will select it for this company. The car we got had hole in the back, the bumper almost fall down, the windshield didnt work, no windshield washer...... The worst thing is they are not open until 7:30 am and the staff would not tell you about it. If you return your car before 7:30 am, you will had to find your own ride to the airport from the rental. They would not tell you how to return the key before their office open. we call their support # and they told us to lock the key inside the car. But rental office call us said we should put the key in the drop box. It was a disaster. If you are not a calm person or a person cant handle the catastrophe, DO NOT rent from this place. You may need an ambulance.

First things first rude customer service. I called on January 7 at around 2pm to inquire about a vehicle at A-1 since the post said automatic, but the description says 5 speed manual. Guy on the phone didn’t even know if it was a 5 speed or 6 speed manual, and kept rushing me on what I wanted. He also kept saying “are you coming to steal it from us?”. Then he asked again what I wanted and what I’m offering, I only offered him $4,000 below their asking price which was at $19,000, instead of trying to negotiate he basically just said “ok bye” and hung up on me RUDE!! I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Zero stars.

This company is gross. We used this company for their rental service and the first car they gave sounded like it was going to break down on us and the engine light was on, so they didnt even bother to get service done on the car. The second car they gave us was a silver Nissan Altima and it was invested with roaches!!!! I found trash under the passenger seat. They didnt even clean this car. Never EVER again will we use this company every AGAIN!!!!!!! It doesnt even deserve a star or half a star.

I had purchased a Jeep from this dealer. When there was a slight mechanical problem after I had purchased the Jeep they let me use a another one of their cars till mine got fixed. They did not have to being that I did not choose to get the warranty. Very good dealer and will work with you. also dont be discouraged by they trailer office they are a good dealer.

There is absolutely nothing to love about this company. They scam you on every level they can. Dont rent cars from them, dont buy from them. You will absolutely be sorry. The good reviews from here must be by the company themselves or by family members of the company. I cant even imagine how they stay in business with their terrible cars and even worse customer service. I would not recommend this company here in Hawaii. We had just moved here and this was the 3rd of 4 rental cars that we rented from 4 different companies in 2 weeks. The car was your standard basic compact car, but without ANY bells or whistles, not even power locks or power windows. Then after we turned it in, they charged us a $50 cleaning fee because there was excessive sand and grass. Yes we did use the car and yes, we are in Hawaii so we did go to the beach, but excessive? But its my word against the cleaning guys.I thought a cleaning service was part of the rental fee. I wouldnt recommend this company to rent a car from, especially since I had 3 other GREAT experiences from other car rental services.

Terrible. Not only did they not correct the expired safety, I went there twice to do it and they were quote, too busy, BUT they also sold me a car with different license plates than shows on the registration and now I have to do all the leg work to fix their mistake!!!! I think the Better Business Bureau might want to hear about this! Also Im getting random charges to my credit card for odd amounts!!!! Who are these crazy people? do NOT I repeat do NOT buy from here, they are scam artists, probably steal cars, and do NOT do what they say they will do. Good luck!

Absolutely the worst rental car experience I have ever had.I had a reservation for an economy car—my reservation says Hyundai Accent or similar. However, when I arrived, they had no economy cars in stock except for a smart car (which, unlike a Hyundai accent, only has room for two passengers). We had three passengers, so that was obviously not an option. We were forced to pay an extra $10/day for an upgrade.Now I just checked my credit card statement and see an additional $46 charge from these guys (charged several days after I returned my car in good condition and full of gas). For what? They never contacted me to say anything, and that was more than a week ago.Stay far, far way.

I would give negative stars if I could. We originally booked a rental car through this company because it was cheap. Lesson learned.First, we waited 1.5 hours to be given our car after a 30 hour flight, and the staff was unapologetic.Second the rental company failed to keep an updated registration and safety inspection in/on the vehicle, which we were pulled over for. We called to tell the company, who said (and I quote) so what do you want us to do about it. They also hung up on us when we told them we were dissatisfied customers that wanted them to fix their mistake.Horrible business ethics, terrible customer service, and overall shady business. Please do not support people like this.

Had to turn my vehicle in early because of a serious life change. Over 800 USD. Used my vehicle for a week. They do not want to reimburse back the remaining money even though I couldnt use it. Basically threw away 500 USD. They reimbursed 167 and made it seem like they were doing me a favor. This obviously causes more undue stress. Its in their contract apparently. Be very careful here. There is no good business practice. Dont try to save money with this company. The Check out and check in process was easy. The vehicles are not in good conditions and are pretty outdated. We are in 2016, ethics is everything.

Also known as Economy Rent a Car The staffs and MANGER have no customer service skills. Had to exchange the rental 3 times in 1 week!1st rental, the gas pedal was loose and the drivers seat buckle didnt work. 2nd rental, there was an issue with the gas gauge and the passengers automatic window didnt roll up. Luckily that day in Honolulu it did not rain.All the issues with the 2 rentals could have been easily caught and fixed if the vehicles were properly evaluated after they were returned from the previous client.

Its a used car dealership. So be prepared for the standard used car salesmen speeches and tactics--BUT they did wrestle a great interest rate out of the bank in order to get us financed at our desired monthly rate. Would not have been able to get the loan without them. Just go in knowing what you will, and will not accept in terms and be firm.

Experience was horrible!! The Manager was rude and cocky! Kept repeating he had 691 cars and boasting about how much hes worth so he didnt care if he made the sale or not. He didnt want to make any deals and was being completely unreasonable with prices! Do not go here!

WISHED I READ REVIEWS FIRST!!! experienced similar issues as others reviews. I was given a car with LOW brakes!!! Going down hill on H1 forget about it, had to use my emergency brake. Man in charge had an accent, hung up on me before stating there was no one I can speak to regarding the issue, wanted me to risk my life back to the rental place without brakes. Owner should be ashamed of having this kind of people work for him. On a positive note, Alex and other young lady there were very nice and courteous.

Single worst dealership Ive ever gone to.Sold us a vehicle that broke down the first week, claimed they repaired it and it broke down 2 more times for the same problem after they promised they fixed it (both times) and we paid them to do their job.They blamed us for the issues even though theyre at fault for failing to divulge the issues in the first place or accurately fix the problems all three trips in.Wont buy the car back and are leaving us thousands of dollars out and without a vehicle because they lied about the cars condition in the first place and didnt fix the problem the three times it occurred.

Rented three vehicles from them for a week in Oahu. Found them through Southwest Airlines. The place is a used car lot and customer service was poor at the start. All three vehicles had mechanical issues and when one broke down leaving 7 from our group stranded, A-1 failed to take any action. If my wife hadnt had AAA towing coverage, she and 6 of her family would have been completely stranded. As I was we had to drive the other two cars from one side of the island to the other to pick people up while one of the party went with the tow to get a replacement vehicle. They were surly with my wife on the phone and very disorganized.

Hard to even give this place 1 star. Car gas tank was less than 1/4th leaving their lot. After reviewing my agreement that night they said they gave it to me full. Dents and dings all over. Hub caps were clearly hanging on my a thread. My dumb self still rented the car to have a hub cap come off sometime between driving it off the lot only to my hotel across town. Dropped it off and told them this and they said ok, we will not charge you. 2 days later they charge my card another 89.00 plus tax for it. Worst car rental experience I have ever had.

Bait and switch, and then sold a truck to me with hidden problems AS-IS. Yeah, my bad for buying it, but that is the reason for the 1 star- to warn others. My warning should have been the disclaimer they make you sign which says not to come back whining or bitching to them. Their words, not mine. Also, they tried to shaft me out of paying for the registration by sending me up there to pick it up which means paying for it, even though they had agreed to pay for it. They replaced a wheel bearing for me for 250 bucks, which I knew was a ripoff (15 dollar part, 150-200 labor), but that was all they said was wrong with it and I figured Id just get it taken care of and then buy some tires. Big props to Lex Brodies for trying to piece that horrible mess back together again, and being really kind about it, too. The truck has constant misfires when driven over 50mph (of course the test drive was on Nimitz in the afternoon, with traffic I barely pushed it past 30) across all cylinders, and the AC compressor has failed within a month of purchase. Bent inner and outter tie rods, busted up ball joints. Leaky intake valve gasket, bad distributor, etc., etc.... Again, not going back to them, never mentioned it to them, but they gouged me on the price and sold me a lump of metal not worth the repairs. They had to have known, it was in their lot for over 2 years before they even tried to sell it.

Our salesperson was Panda and we HIGHLY recommend him to everyone. He was professional and a pleasure to do business with. We will be back for our next vehicle.

Garbage. This place sucks, Ive known three different people who bought three different cars from these aholes and all three had mechanical problems. They love to work with you and negotiate this and that, but in the end nearly all of the cars they sell have some sort of problem wrong with them.

STAY AWAY!!! Agent at the desk stated that it is required that international renters buy insurance through them or they cant rent. I told them that insurance is covered through my credit car. He said that this was their policy but constantly declined to show me the policy. I showed him my expedia agreement which stated otherwise. Gave us (family with 3 young children) the option of taking the shuttle back to the airport as pressure. The agents and company at the desk CANNOT be trusted when they are so DISHONEST and use these types of tactic to take advantage of tourists. Tourism agency should discipline this company for giving Hawaii a bad reputation. Also, expedia should not list a company like this on their website. I will definitely be speaking with Expedia to protect future customers.

This company is an absolute scum of the earth business. Almost all the cars they have is overpriced and they will play a lot of mind games with you. They will tell ANY lie to sell the car. This place should not even be allowed to operate. Read the 1 star reviews and not the 5 star reviews.

(Same review as for Economy since they appear to be the same.) Cheap price and cheap car (6 year old Camry) was worth it until...Returned car and old hub cap apparently fell off. Shocked at being charged full replacement value of $40 for a battered old hub cap). Grouchy attendant got grouchier when I said the price seemed excessive for a $25 rental. Would not recommend.

USE CAUTION- We rented a car through Travelocity and booked through Economy Car rentals. A-1 Rent A Car is associated with Economy. We got an older Malibu for four of us in Oahu. We drove to the hotel and had it valet parked for the next day and a half. We took it out for our first adventure and boy what a surprise; the car was infested with cockroaches! We did not see one or two roaches, there were many. There were babies all the way up to adult - YUCK. We immediately called the place and told them, they said to return the car and they would replace it. When we got there we were so creeped out, we decided we did not want ANY car from them. We were told by the young man in the office that we would only be charged fro the 2 days that we actually had the car in our possession and they would credit our account for the rest of the days. He showed us the computer screen and it showed a credit on our account. The man said he could not process a refund, but the manager would process it that night and a credit would show up 3 business days after the paperwork was process. We called 6 days later and were told they DO NOT REFUND EVER! They would only replace the car with another car (we were home by this time). We are very disappoint and angry.

Horrible renting experience. Reserved a car and was told that it was located at the Honolulu airport, and that we could return it until 9 pm on our designated return date, and neither ended up being true. Upon discovering this new information, we attempted to cancel our reservation, and were charged a fee for not cancelling 72 hours in advance, when wed only booked 3 hours earlier! Horrible, horrible, horrible.

That being said, this company does more for people then most of these reviews give them credit for.In 2013 I bought an 05 Sentra from them, fresh out of community college with no credit, no cosigner, and a dismal down payment. Needless to say I overpaid for the car, but thats the same with every Buy Here Pay Here dealership. Compared to some of the places in Waipahu these guys are on the cheaper side of overpriced.When I blew the head gasket on my 05 Sentra(A very common failure for that year, its a poorly machined part) they rented me a car for next to nothing while I got it fixed. Mind you I was 21 yrs old at the time.Recently I bought one of their retired rental fleet Yaris. Mechanically it had been well taken care of and Calvin,the owner, was much more pleasant this time around.My salesman was Panda, he made an honest effort to find me the cheapest, most reliable car and Im satisfied with the purchase.At this point Ive started to build a healthy credit score, and likely wont be buying my next car from these guys. Nevertheless, they helped me out when few others would, and I definitely will continue to rent cars from them when the need arises.And who returns a rental car dirty? Thats a sure fire way to get hit with a cleaning fee.. Spend the 5 minutes it takes to vacuum the car at a gas station & youll avoid any headaches.

Rented a car. Had to return it due to check engine light on and car vibration. Second vehicle had similar issues.

Super sketchy place. I rented through Expedia thinking I was going with a national brand (Economy) but it ended up being this sketchy place operating out of a trailer in a used car lot. Based on the image and description on Expedia I was lead to believe I was getting a newer Ford Taurus or similar. A 6 year old beat up Nissan Altima is NOT similar and I didnt see any car on the lot less than about 4 years old. The car had warning lights all over the dash. We also watched about 6 shuttles for each of the reputable brands pass us at the airport before our crappy beat up van shuttle showed up. Do not rent here. Expedia should not do business with this company.

Called based on a craigslist ad for a very expensive pickup truck for my daughter. The sales rep that answered the phone was a pompous self promoting jerk. He proceeded to tell me that they sell $30,000 cars not $3000 cars, and he REFUSED to answer any questions about the car I was calling about. A CAR SALES REP was actually judging another person, I planned on sending my daughter with $3000 cash to buy the vehicle I was calling about because I dont want to ship her 2014 VW Convertible beetle to her while she is just a freshman in college, and she needs a cheap pickup because she has a job transferring turtles from one beach to be tagged and to another beach. I told him I had cash he said I dont care take your $3000 somewhere else and good luck with that. THEY WERE ADVERTISING IT, that is why I called in the first place. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS TERRIBLE SERVICE LOCATION, there are good deals everywhere, Last year I bought a used 2009 HHR from Honolulu Ford for about $4000 under Retail KBB and they had great service, go ANYWHERE but here.

OK .. So today I took my wife car shopping .. cince she recently got back from deployment and had a few bucks to spend, we visited several car dealerships like tony nissan/ J&N Mazda, which was great service just not the vehicles we had in mind. Also uper friendly competitive pricing. then we hit a-1 auto sales hoping to just pay majority cash and just finance a few thousand. While we were at A-1 Auto there were 2 vehicles we were interested in, however they were 3-4 thousand over priced sometimes dealers do this to just to get the price they want no the price its worth. The sales man asked us for our in depth information in order to give us a hard quote . We proceeded to ask the manager/ owner personally, he insisted that he needed more information from us. I insisted that he offered a better price than sticker price on the 2 vehicles because they were way over KBB value at which point he told me and my wife to leave using some choice words....! After that we visited another dealership and leased a brand new vehicle.

Beware of the deposit Scammers, Do your homework people! yes their cheap but they get you in the end by charging you $250. for a cleaning deposit ... If you dont believe me go on Yelp or Angies list and read up on the reviews while your at it check their complaints with the BBB~ The cars are not clean when you get them, Also when I returned the car they said all was good so amagine my surprise when I got my bank statement when I called them to confront them about it I was given the run around by one of their managers Panda

Worst place I can think of to rent out buy a car. They will streak your last done and sell it back to you for a dollar.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! This was the WORST experience. These people should be put out of business. The gave us a car that didnt work, charged us for it, fought us tooth and nail, were complete jerks. They make Hawaii look bad.

Charged me 3 days for a car I never picked up. Should have been charged 1 day according to rules on website. Now no one will even talk to me about it now. What a scamming outfit. Very shady business.

I called and asked the guy if they still had a specific car in their inventory and when I drove there the car wasnt on the lot and was being rented out. Waste of time.

15 minutes from the airport. Not friendly staff. Car didn’t work well and was dirty.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKED..THEY ARE RUDE ..NEVER EVER BUY A CAR FROM THEM..THEY GET NO STARS....SAD HOW THEY TALK DOWN ON THERE CUSTOMERS..THE OWNER IS VERY RUDE...I DONT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO GO THERE..

They charged $28 even after canceled the reservation a month in advance.
