This is a nice co-op. Its in a very convenient location and though small it has a decent selection. The produce section is stocked very nicely with locally sourced produce, and they actually have a killer beer selection. They offer a lot of pre-made meals which is great, however the sandwiches my husband and I purchased were a little lackluster, especially for the price. If I lived in that area and needed a few things here and there, I would stop in, but I wouldnt go out of my way to shop here.
Nice to have a grocery store in this area as there are not many other choices. They do have nice produce and decent selection of products with a nice coffee bar and kombucha on draft. It is a little small so not as much choice is available. Staff are very friendly and welcoming which is a nice thing add it means you feel comfortable shopping here. Parking is good with a nice big lot so no problems accessing the store. They do have a nice picnic table area or front as well.
I come here if and only if I need to fill up my purified water tanks. Pricing is otherwise kind of expensive, but I guess thats what you should expect for a local co-op. The friendliness of staff is very polarizing. Some members of their team are extremely kind and inviting. Other interactions... not so much. Lets just say Ive seen happier correspondence at the DMV.
Its a very nice store to shop at but I had a very uncomfortable expiernce using there bathrooms the janitor knocked and I kept saying there was someone in there and he rattled the door handle and pulled out his keys to open the door and I had to leave.. maybe he just had bad hearing ... Do better.
Came for dinner on a meatless Monday for the vegan options. That night they had curry, cilantro rice, and sweet coconut rolls I believe. The food was very good. The space to eat was not clean and kind of grossed me out. Part of it was people not cleaning up after themselves, part was dead flies laying on a table and all around the window. Not exactly what you want to look at when you’re eating. Next time I’ll probably eat outside.Lots of great products you can’t find everywhere.Updated to add that each visit after my first has been much cleaner in the eating area - no flies!
Classic co-op. Large, clean, well organized, many locally sourced products of all kinds. Super friendly service.
One of my favorite places in Durham. Not overpriced, healthy, fresh, local foods, supplements, body care, and gifts, and the cashiers will make your day. Support this important institution and become a member!
Relatively small market, with a good selection of grocery items. Prices are high, but what you’d expect at a co-op. Food bar was really lacking in options.. but may be due to a renovation project. Probably atypical? Outside seating area, although covered, was muddy and unusable, at least not with kiddos.
Only up here for the day, however have been here before a few times. Employees are always very nice, the place is always clean and not missing items, and if you want organic or natural groceries, this is a great place to go in durham. I would recommend that you shop here for any of your needs grocery wise.
The co-op pays living wages and supplies delicious and ethically sourced food. The butcher is great. Very knowledgeable staff.
Nicest staff ever. Love the meat section.
It is definitely a pricey place, but we were eligible for their store discount thru their program and enjoy 20% off. They could improve a little on internal communication, as we came a few times to pick up a special order and nobody knows where it is, but with a little bit of patience it always works out.
The bathroom is clean but the staff is unenthused and unhelpful. The lights are very dim and they are without basic products like lemon juice??..The organic section is great
I love this store, the diverse selections of ingredients, the whole animal butcher and great cheese selection. I live closer to other coops but find this one to be my favorite.
Great price on fresh made salads ($4.99).
Perhaps Im the outlier here because of all the good reviews, but Ive been shopping here for over a year in effort to give it a chance. If youre looking for a grocery store stocked with apathy and self entitlement, then look no further. All the white wokeness in me really wanted it to work. Its local! and Chain stores are the evil and support support warlords from some third world country! But I get more smiles, courtesy, and cheaper prices (same products) at the chain grocery. So, warlords, take my money!
Got fresh snapper, looks good cant wait to eat it...staff seems knowledgeable
Always well stocked and ckean... Friendly staff
My favorite place to shop. I absolutely love coops.
Good quality produce and organic local products that help the community and make for a great meal. Seeing as this is an all local and organic operation, the prices are a bit high but are compensated by the great customer service and delicious foods.
Good assortment of organic and local foods. Can be pricey, but that is the cost of supporting local farmers who arent part of super corporations. Craft beers are cool and tasty. Staff is friendly. Good range of fresh produce. Lots of vegetarian and vegan meats and cheeses.
We visit Durham to my in laws and have always shopped at the co-op. Love it! They have a great management from what we could experience and the mask policy which they do implement. Happy to support local shop.
This place is like home for me! Friendly service n vibe. Great healthy groceries.
The Co-op is doing an amazing job with public safety and health concerns. Everyone was wearing a mask and keeping good distance. They have a fantastic mix of local goods and hard-to-find niche vegan items. I love the Co-op! I look forward to when events can happen again.
Health conscious. I am eager to see what they are like when they are allowed to have all of the the fun stuff like the olive bar open. A bit spendy for me to do my regular shopping there, but OK for once in a while treats, like fresh bread, local produce and a good cheese variety. Desserts look interesting. Definitely a splurge. YOLO?
Small and easy to manage. They let me use my own jars (have them get the tare first!) for bulk items and it’s nice to find local cheese here. The local apples they have from about August through December are the best prices anywhere. My only improvement is that I would like for them to continue to grow their bulk foods and spices selection and keep it stocked. I’ve been able to cut down on so many plastic bags and waste by bringing my own jars and reusable produce bags and filling them with their bulk items.
They have all types or organic products recommend this place to shop.
I love it in here! Everyone is so nice. Good wine selection, too.
Lovely market with a wide variety of s stuff. The staff was very sweet and helpful as well!!
Very disappointed in this place! Drove an hour to come check it out and forced to wear a mask. Wouldnt so I didnt get to check it out. When will people WAKE UP!!!!!
Its like a hippy grocery store .
There are many reasons to like the Co-op. My favorite is the beer selection.
Love their free Wednesday wine tastings, and the fact that you can have $3 glasses of the wines being showcased that week. Makes for a cheap date (but still cute) to do the tasting and then take a glass outside to a picnic table and drink under the string lights.
This is a good neighborhood grocery store. However, some of the prices are a bit high. $9 a loaf for gluten free bread is a bit ridiculous. However, the coffee is great. They have a nice selection of smoothies, pastries and hot bar items. I particularly like the fact that they celebrate Hanukkah and kwanza. They also help the community a lot through donations to urban ministries of Durham. I have always received excellent service from the staff. I just wish that some of the staples and snacks were less pricey. Usually gluten free bread runs between 5-6 dollars.
We love our local co-op!
Love supporting our community. Reasonable prices. Great deals for members. Nice place to sit and have prepared food also
The beer section is to die for!
This Co-op is in a very diverse area. Not far from Duke University. I love that they sell products from local businesses and manufacturers. Ive never had any issues with the people who work there, nor the people who shop there. Their location is a bit far from where I live. So Ill give them 4 stars.
I come here a lot. This review is only because I wish the staff was more helpful and knowledgeable (they’re almost all good at customer service, so I think maybe it’s a training issue?) and I wish there was more selection in certain areas, like produce. I see a lot of potential, you’re so close to being amazing!
Very cool grocery store, committed to helping the community.
I love that Durham has a coop! And, even when I try to get as much on sale as I can, its still really expensive to shop there(for me). They have lots of local food, and the hot bar, while not huge, is always tasty. I love that they offer a huge discount to people on SNAP, and they employ diverse folks in the community.
Great market, with an impressive variety of everyday and special groceries. Open to everyone, with the option of becoming a member-owner. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Theres also a small hot bar and deli, with seating areas inside and outside for those who want to eat there. Many locally-produced items. For those who want to become member-owners, there is a one-time cost of around $100, some of which you get back in the format of gift card (there are also monthly deals for members, but most of the value is in having a market that is guaranteed to stay locally controlled and community-focused.
I have a medical condition that does not allow me wear a face mask. I informed the Co-Op of this, and the manager stated it was store policy. They refused service to me because i have a medical condition. What else do they discriminate against? The manager was white and most of the employees are African American. If you continue to keep your membership and shop here; you are supporting the discrimination of the sick and disabled; and who know what else.
In this day and age, it is easier and easier to avoid contributing to the growth and improvement of our communities. The Durham Co-op Market provides an excellent way to change that. Offering commonly needed items like food, drinks, and body care products, for significantly cheaper prices than major supermarkets, the Market is a great place to shop for those looking to help bolster the place they call home.
The Durham Co-Op is my happy place! A wonderful selection that changes and entices me with something new each visit. Also everything I try is fantastic! The co-op is also ureasonably well priced, I dont know how they manage it but its appreciated because I want to try everything in this place! 😍
Very helpful and friendly staff. Good variety of fresh and healthy food
I love this place. I really do. I think the variety of vegetarian and vegan options is amazing, as well as the quality of food they provide. Being an owner was a really great investment. However, my biggest issue is some of the staff here. Theyre generally all very welcoming, but the last few times Ive shopped here the same individuals have acted unpleasant and as if they dont want to be at work. Theres also a lot of socialization that happens at the register and thats fine at times, but when Im asking a question and it goes unanswered so they can talk to a co-worker about something unrelated to work is very frustrating. Ill keep coming back here, but maybe some retraining for some of your staff would be helpful.
I appreciate that this store exists, their Thursday dinners are excellent, and they offer a wide range of high quality food products. I wish they did a better job of sourcing produce from small local farms. Their use of the term local is a bit rich. Also, I cant count the number of times I have been overcharged for items. Beware: sometimes the sale prices listed around the store are not recorded at the cash register. And few of the cashiers seem to understand how to subtract the weight of a peanut butter jar from the total (for bulk peanut butter). Might seem like a small gripe, but it costs me $1.85 every time and I eat a lot of peanut butter. The cashier today gave me a ton of attitude for asking her to add the jar and then entered it wrong anyway and overcharged me. Please train your cashiers properly and while youre at it try paying all your workers a living wage.
Im a big fan of the co-op. I can get in and out fast, it has most of what I need, and the prices arent bad for most items. Nice, friendly atmosphere. Durhams co-op is great!
Great dinners (especially $3 dinner night on Thursday!), awesome staff, and solid range of affordable, often local, quality groceries. Doing their part to make Durham better through community partnerships as well. Check them out!
I love the fresh faces the food is really good and well cared for I like that the water station is clean this is personal but I like great food and a clean store. Thank you for the warm greetings. And inquiring about my day I feel truly part of the fabric of Durham when I am in the co-op. A particularly touching moment was seeing an elderly man in fruit and produce as his family came in and sang Happy birthday to him his wife his children his grandchildren it was great to see the generational interaction and love.
This long-awaited store is a real joy. The cafe features many non-meat and often vegan dishes on the hot bar, and on Monday evenings the hot bar is all-vegan for Meatless Monday. The head cook for this event is great--lots of variety and much down-home cooking. The rest of the store is good too...a very sufficient bulk section, and about everything you really need in a natural foods store. They get in fresh, locally-baked bread from several sources, as well as many other items. The staff are friendly and make you feel very welcome and at home.
A handful of my coworkers shop here and told me about it. I have enjoyed shopping here
The Co-Op is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! Lots of great quality produce and a great selection of packaged and frozen goods. The $3 dinner Thursdays are always a great time. I really like their wine selection with many really nice affordable options. My favorite thing is the grind-your-own peanut butter and the bulk goods including an excellent spice section.
I so wanted to like this place, but every time I go, I am greeted by the rudest staff. They have been quite nasty to me at the register, and after trying many times, I really dont think Ill be back, as I feel so low when I leave.
You say all local and I am bought in. I am a regular here. I come here for the breads and freshly ground almond butter. I have found their prices cheaper than whole foods. Sometimes the Kombucha come on sale. I would recommend this place to fancy retail giants like Amazon. Almost all the items that are sold here are from in and around where we live.I have always had friendly smiles and good service here and that goes a long way.
I love being a member of my locally-owned coop. Great organic food, a delicious food bar and quality products all around. The cafe is a relaxing casual place for a quick bite. The staff are friendly and helpful. Im so delighted to have this great store in the place I call home, Durham.
Best all natural selection
Great little co-op with lots of healthy options and excellent prices. Prepared food is also available. Friendly staff and a wonderful atmosphere. There is outdoor seating, lunch and dinner specials, and regular specials for co-op members. I 💖 Durham co-op!
We had their weekly dinner. It was excellent. We did some shopping afterwards and bought a few local and organic items. Very reasonably priced, well-stocked, store was clean. Also bought some of their dispensed high pH water, very reasonable price for something that is not that easy to come by. Will definitely make it a regular for our groceries.
Great food, reasonable prices (dont you always get what you pay for?) and super friendly staff! My happy place!
I go here a lot. Love it! They have sales on items that are usually overpriced at Whole Foods. Tons of vegan and vegetarian options. It’s walking distance from Durham’s downtown and apartments. My only qualm is that the cashier service isn’t great. The workers seem like they hate their jobs and are inconvenienced. Maybe I’m just used to friendly customer service.
Great food coop!
Selection is pretty good, but of course its missing some stuff we eat because its small. Good selection of vegan cheese and meat. Prepared foods section isnt as much to our liking as the co-op in Carrboro or even Whole Foods in Raleigh. Produce section is small but decent. Prices are pretty high, but in line with other natural foods stores.
Great place to share coffee or a meal with friends. Lots of options for food including vegetarian an vegan. The cafe space and outdoor seating are pleasant. They also have good selections of wine, beer, local produce, and groceries. The prices are similar to Whole Foods but there are specials that are competitive with big box stores. Free coffee with a breakfast item is hard to beat. They stock local breads and pastries. The staff is friendly and helpful. How can you beat the $3 Thursday dinners.
Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced! I’ve tried three times now, hoping the store workers were just having off days, but they have been rude, haughty, and aloof every time. I don’t know how this place stays in business with such unpleasant staff. Never going back! Was hoping to find a nice local place to shop in Durham but it’s not even worth it to go here. :-(
Amazing! This establishment has it right. Well worth the price of ownership if you wish to get more involved, or can capitalize on the specials reserved for stake holders. Truly organic options from local resources and a wide variety of everything youd expect to see in a big box grocery store. Cinnamon buns are worth a trip alone!
Best challah bread in town!
Awesome spot! Great for natural and healthy products. The Coop program is really cool. Its nice to have another health food option. We always try to make it to $3 Thursdays for a nice meal. Very tasty options.
What a great community resource. Im glad to have this in Durham. They highlight the best that NC local farmers have to offer and carry other favorites as well. Im big fan of the Delight soy products and Counterculture coffee! Its nice knowing that most of the money and profits get poured back into the community.
A little too much hippie nonsense for my tastes (herbal remedies, anti-GMO hysteria), but otherwise a great local shop. Everyone here is really nice, and they have a lot of good programs to make things financially accessible to the wider community. The $3 dinners on Thursdays are a particularly nice feature, and we usually end up grabbing a beer to go with our meals since they have a lot of good options.I go here despite the tinge of woo-woo thinking, which is really saying a lot for how good everything else about this place is. Who knows, I might even join!
A very nice, though small market. It has a great selection of beer, cheese, and produce. It has most basic necessities, and a basic seafood and bulk sections. The three dollar meals on Thursdays are a great value. It adds a great place to shop for a neighborhood without any other immediate alternatives.
Great local & organic foods, as well as a wide variety of vegan & gluten free foods! The locally produced grass-fed ground beef has a much better flavor than most store-bought ground beef, & its leaner; makes amazing burgers! Local eggs (from Hillsborough) are fresh & delicious, & seldom will you find a cracked egg in the carton. A great selection of locally bakes breads & cakes is displayed, & theres a very good selection of beers & wines. Great selection of vitamins, supplements, & beauty/skin care products, too!
My experience shopping here has been great. Its a stelar family place for everyone. You can count on the quality organic food and crazy good beer selection. I especially love the folks who work there. Super kind every time. (This is really hard to do. We all have ups and downs. Not something you can easily show when you work in customer service.) Once I even got a major bit of life wisdom that was really appreciated. Not preaching mind you. Just solid sage advice from one human to another having a good conversation. This makes the shopping experience so wonderful. I am proud to be a Durham Co-op member.
A great great great co-op in a town that has gone without one for years and very much needed one. They are small, but very community oriented. Their fresh foods are either locally sourced or made in house. Their stock is fairly standard fare, with some special events (such as Wine Wednesdays and Meatless Mondays) spicing things up a bit.
I love this little store! I really like the $3 dinners that they have on Thursdays, a meat and vegan option is always available. I have to come here to get my Daiya brand vegan cheese, it isnt sold anywhere else besides Whole Foods (which I avoid). They have good organic products also.
Love the Coop, has that small hometown feeling, love, love, love the fresh fruit and veggie options especially when its homegrown
Good selections for a relatively small space. Fresh produce, bulk flour, nuts, seeds, etc. Trustworthy brands: Seventh Generation; Dr. Bronners; King Arthur, Bobs Red Mill, and Arrowhead Mills flours and baking products. Local products from Maple View Dairy and Weaver St. Bakery, as well as in-house entrees, sides, and baked goods. Recommended!
Great vegetarian and vegan selections. Many local options as well. The staff is friendly and helpful. The beer selection is small but awesome. Ive found some rare Prairie bottles at this location. All around great market.
Very nice neighborhood grocery. All high quality stuff. Good food and salad bar. Reasonable prices. Great staff.
Love this place. The staff are like family, good prices, fresh produce and quality foods. Wonderful wine selection thats unique and uncommon yet at great process and taste palates.
Very well groomed market and lovely sitting area.
Awesome Durham market. We do all our shopping here and occasionally will go for their hot bar and excellent sandwiches. As it continues to grow, I hope they increase their salad bar/hot bar and prepared food options. They are a bit slim compared to other outlets, but this is a true grass roots effort and Im sure will take time to grow as the community pours their support behind it. Theres a large seating area inside and out with good WiFi,so a great place to work and people watch.
Store is was clean, inventory is plenty, cashiers are courteous. The Thursday meal was good. What a pleasure to shop!
Pretty good hot and salad bar most days, tons of beverage options. Staff could stand to be more proactive with cleanup around the dining space and buffet, though. Amazing selection of quality grocery items the seems to avoid mega-brands: refreshing and responsible vision by the founders!
The Co-op is a wonderful place with great choices and very friendly staff!
I love Coops. Ive shopped at Coops all over the country, but every time I go to my local Co-op (Durham), I have to ask myself: why? There is always, ALWAYS, an issue. For example: Yesterday I decide to grab a muffin and a coffee. The baked goods section is filthy; there are flies hovering over the hot bar; and there is no coffee and no creamer. When I politely asked the staff to refill the creamer, they acted as though I was burdening them. And... My muffin was stale. At least they charged me for the correct items this time! This is the poorest run Coop I have ever been to. The staff is not invested in delivering quality. I wonder why the store is usually empty? Unfortunately, this store deserves to go down.
I finally visited the durham co-op last week to do a little shopping, and I am so glad that I did! For a small, local and health focused store they really had a lot. A GREAT selection of local groceries which I was expecting, but I was surprised I was still able to get some other necessary items that cannot be sourced locally. They had things that I often cant find at Whole Foods (or cant find for anywhere near a reasonable price a Whole Foods). I didnt even have to go to a second grocery store to fill in the gaps! Very pleased.
We make an effort to shop here because we know we are supporting ethical farms, local businesses, and good people. 3 dollar dinners are a great chance to get a good meal and run into neighborhood friends. We love the co-op.
My publishing company has been in this neighborhood for nearly 30 years, and the addition of the Co-op has substantially improved the quality of life in the community. I visit the coffee bar every day, and the eat-in restaurant has an excellent hot bar. I especially enjoy the outdoor seating area; in nice weather, I will have authors come meet me there to discuss book proposals.
10/10 I love this place
I love shopping at the Coop it is one of my favorite places to shop. It is always clean and the staff is always friendly.
Small grocery store, but had everything we needed. Excellent selection of wine and cheese. Very friendly and helpful employees!
Lots of interesting items. Nice atmosphere but I was very disappointed in the bake goods section. After 2 visits in one week, I continually see flies in the bake goods cases. I might understand one fly but there were several in the cases. Need the staff to make this a priority to correct.
Love the staff, always something vegan and yummy on the hot bar, good produce, Field Day brand for affordable basics and Weaver Street favorites, part of the neighborhood, shaded outdoor picnic tables and inside seating. This is a happy place and I try to drop in daily because it feels good.
