I used to order cakes and drive 30 minutes to buy a slice of cake at For The Love of Sugar. My mom is the head and manager of the respiratory therapist department. At the beginning of summer 2020 during Covid, I could see the stress affecting my mom. I decided it would be great to get a treat for her department.I spent over $80 easily with everything on the board and a box of gluten-free and then vegan cookies. It was towards closing, and I wanted to take a photo. An employee decided to talk about me, and I was within earshot. She was annoyed that I wanted writing on the board for front line workers and stating why I was taking a photo, why isnt she leaving, I want to go home, she needs to leave now, etc. Her comments went on and on. After that, I have never been back since. I was only told sorry and not even compensated for how much I spent.I used to love this bakery, but IF THEY DISRESPECT FRONT-LINE WORKERS, I cannot support them.
The crowd is excited about the treats. I was not impressed with any of the cakes I tried... I went with a group and we all technically sampled each others slices... we picked our pieces based on appearance and name, one friend loves the chocolate chocolate cake and suggested we all give this place a try. I will just say, the decor was cute, the cakes were nice to look at, and the customers view into the baking experience is a nice touch. But the cake was seriously lacking. It was dense, tight and dry... I would almost say dehydrated. I have never had that experience with cakes. I will also add the name, For the Love of Sugar is slightly miss leading... none of the cakes we tried were sweet... my friends suggestion of the chocolate cake, was probably the best, but I will say she loves dark chocolate, and it was definitely dark, slightly bitter and lacking the sweet for me, but tolerable. The carrot cake, banana cake, and two others I sampled were a strong pass for me. I did try a macaroon, and they were pretty good. There was a seriously long line and the staff was super nice and dealt with the crowd well.🤔10 = great; 1= NOT greatDecor: 10Customer service: 10Cakes: 3Macaroons: 8Trendy: 10Will I go back: 1 😉(if my dark chocolate cake loving friend wants to go back, I will ride with her, but I will pass on a purchase)
My partner and I contacted this bakery multiple times to place an order for a custom designed wedding cake. We were informed by the staff to contact the owner directly via email. We sent the owner 3 emails, none of which were answered. When we attempted to place an order in store, the staff member who assisted us was very rude and abrasive. First, we were yelled at and then told they could not take our order. They informed us to email the owner, despite having explained why we were attempting to place the order in store as the owner was completely nonresponsive. The young lady working the counter was aggressive and hostile, not just to us but to her coworker and other patrons of the store. Overall, the experience was terrible. The selection is quite minimal in terms of the in store baked treats. This place is clearly focused on aesthetic more than quality of product and customer relations. Would not recommend.
I love this bakery. Super cute atmosphere & great desserts. My favorite is the Matilda cake if youre a chocolate lover, but dont hesitate to try their other goodies!
I bought a slice of the gluten free apple cake which was absolutely delicious! I’ll be back to sample the other gluten free options. The portions are very generous for the price.
The pictures dont do this cake any justice this cake is horrible hard like Play-Doh very disappointing the cakes at Krogers that only cost $12 tastes better than this $45 cake waited 2 months for this very disappointing for my fiance 50th birthday cake I definitely have to redo this cake over from another bakery. The icing taste like pure butter not even sweet this must be a vegan cake because it has no flavor I didnt ask for a vegan cake I really dont know what the rave is all about their cakes are not good I recommend going to another bakery. Unfortunately you have to give at least one star but thecake presentation I guess deserves one star taste-wise a one out of a hundred. The name of the business is For the Love of sugar hello where is the sugar did you forget to put somein this cake ?
I had a great experience with For the Love of Sugar for my sons birthday cake! At first I was nervous it seemed like it took a little long to respond to my cake inquiry so I did call twice to make sure I could get in. Once I had my order confirmed with the owner everything else went great. Pricing is expensive but the design, flavor, and moistness of the cake was amazing! Honestly it was one of the best cakes Ive had in a while. The cashier was nice as well when I came to pick up. The shop is really cute as well and in a nice location as well. I definitely recommend.
I went with a lot of expectations and probably got the wrong thing but their hot chocolate was just about average. Nothing really to write home about. Id even go as far to say that Starbucks hot chocolate is way better. It wasnt rich or creamy or delicious. It was just flat chocolate milk. Quite disappointed. The employee who took my order and made my hot chocolate looked stressed and didnt really seem friendly. Another reason for being disappointed in this place. The store is very pretty and cakes looked good. If I come back, Ill get a slice of cake.
I cant recommend this place enough!! They do SUCH incredible work -- not only for my wedding and creating the perfect cake based on my vision, but also every time I visit the bakery! Their cakes are out of this world and so flavorful and unique. Every single person whos shared feedback about our cake has raved about it. We got the Triple Berry Vanilla Bean Cake -- highly recommend that, or literally any other of their cakes. The photo with more flowers was my inspiration (which had too much floral IMO) and the design team followed through with absolute perfection! Thank you SOOO much, Manal and team! Cant wait to stop by every chance I get and eat more of your cake, macaroons, and lattes!
I purchased a two tier beautiful cake for my sisters baby shower. The cakes details was very spot on to the image that I sent! The cake was absolutely amazing! Definitely worth the $300 that I paid for it!😁 If you are looking for a delicious moist cake this is the place!
I am over the TOP in love with this bakery. It never falls short of PURE HEAVEN in your mouth.I love how diverse and wonderful the staff is especially the manger Tiff! Thank you so much Tiff for your kindness and generosity! You cannot image how you made my day! My macaroons and the vegan chocolate chip cookies satisfied my soul! 5 stars were not enough! I needed 10!
Super delicious! Also, anyone who wants a good GF or Vegan treat thats actually delicious, go here!! They also have regular treats, their cakes are my absolute favorite. Try it out, you wont be disappointed!
The cake we ordered for my sons wedding was absolutely amazing. The owner recommended the flavors and made changes to the cake as I needed them to change. She delivered and set up the cake as promised and rented me a pedestal at a very reasonable price. I would recommend her to anyone. The cake was so good we didnt have any left at all ! Kathleen Tarket
10/30/20 We got a celebration tray for 2 young adult bdays. The cakes were a 9, macaroons a 10, cookies and brownies, 5. The board is cheesy, writing...eh, could have used some glitter, candle, sparkler.....somthing to encompass the whole thing, bring it together. The idea is genius, execution a 7.Today is 10/30/21. A year later, we get another cake board..... I paid $59 for this(The picture). The cake was not sweet, (how can that be?)the macaroons were all different sizes. The owner.....sorry to say, approved this cake board, goes to show how the quality has gone down hill.Last year I gave the cake a 9,macaroons a 10, this year I give the whole experience a 3. No thank you, For the Love of Sugar?
Aesthetically, this place is beautiful! The customer service was amazing, despite there being a long line. Decorations were on point! The taste just doesn’t do it for me. Priced right for the location and delivery. But you can find better cakes at the hood Coney Islands! lol.. Don’t get me wrong, I’d probably spend money here for my boujie friends that like stuff from here. I just wouldn’t buy for my satisfaction, if that makes sense. Great experience tho!
Where do I start! The name of this place says it all! Cake + Coffee + Macarons and let me tell you, all are Rockstars!Their coffee offerings can put a full time cafe to shame. Cakes and Macarons are decadent! Interior of the bakery has been meticulous designed from the tin roof to the furnishings. Service is quick and friendly. Cant wait to come back and try other items here. Their ROB (rose and orange blossom) latte and Matilda cake were the MVP on my first visit.
Love love love this place! One of the best cakes I’ve ever had. Literally.
Our vegan wedding cake was beautiful and delicious! 2020 hasnt been an easy year for weddings... Manal not only responded quickly when I contacted her about needing to make some changes but was also very compassionate and understanding. I knew For the Love of Sugar makes beautiful and delicious desserts but the icing on the cake had to be how lovely everyone was from start to finish.
Delicious cakes and clean place. However, Limited vegan options.I could tell that the staff are overworked. They don’t take orders till August. No one was smiling. And when I said, please make the celebration arrangement nice, the answer was “No promises”.
Highly recommend the Matilda cake. Its a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Both the fruity pebble and pistachio macaroons are awesome. The nutella ones did not do it for me. If youre going to get the red velvet cake, make sure you try it before the Matilda cake because it is a much less rich cake. Both were very moist and delicious. Cant wait to try a few more things from this place.
This place takes the cake! Beautiful bakery with framed custom cakes displayed as window dressings reminds us that food can also be an art form to feed the soul. This was our first time there, but we loved the late hours and welcoming coffee shop vibe. All the staff were friendly and helpful, with a sense of humor. The cakes are gorgeous and tasty, and are served in large portions. I was even introduced to something new, knafeh (a middle eastern cake with rosewater and pistachio). Indoor and outdoor seating areas are well-maintained. Nice and clean unisex bathrooms are appreciated too. I will definitely be back!
Is there an option for 6 stars?!? I have been wanting to try this place for a while. It did not disappoint. The parking stinks but thats an area thing...cant blame the bakery! The store is adorable. Waited in line but worth the wait. The staff was super nice. Ordered several macaroons (pistachio was amazing), brownie, and 3 pieces of cake. The Matilda cake looks like it would be too sweet but it is not. It is the best. And I am not a huge cake person. The peanut butter chocolate cake was delish too. Cant wait to go back!
Stopped in right before close on the way to pick up a take out order nearby and will definitely be back for more! The staff were talkative, attentive and made me feel welcome despite rolling in 2 minutes from close.Ordered a double espresso that was out of this world and smooth for the start of a Saturday evening. The espresso, paired with a few macarons are a reason to come back, hungry for more!
L-R: Matilda, Fruity Pebbles, Strawberry Shortcake and Triple Berry Jam...all absolutely delicious. Sponge was moist, and sponge to filling/buttercream ratio was perfect (I prefer more cake and was very happy). You get a nice size piece for a very reasonable price. The strawberry surprised me the most, loved it. The staff is gracious, and service is quick. Place is very clean and comfortable. Will definitely return, with only four cakes tasted Ive only scratched the surface of what they have to offer!!
I will start off with the positives and say the service is top notch. The people are very nice, patient, and always smiling. The place is a nice atmosphere with clear glass room to see the actual desserts being made. I would go again just on the service and atmosphere. The portions are huge, so you do get more than what you pay for. I just think the sweets are overrated and cakes did not wow me. I tried 5 items, and none of them were over the top. Also, they didnt have any peanut butter options. How do you not have peanut butter option in a sweets place?
This place has to be the best cake and Macaroons bakery in town Ive been here multiple times And every time its an amazing experience Great people Amazing desserts And delicious coffee drinks Whats nice also is they caters to people who are gluten free I love this place You have to try it for yourself
Arrived when they opened, line out the door! Coffee and special lattes are delicious. Weve had the Matilda chocolate cake, triple berry cake, and the caramel cookie bar. The staff was nice and friendly. This bakery shop is amazing!!
We drove over an hour to try this place and were so excited to try it. It was the sole reason we drove to Detroit but were so disappointed in the poor customer service that we will not be back. With the COVID-pandemic they limit one person inside at a time despite there being over 13 workers behind the counter - so warning come alone or your family and friends will awkwardly wait outside in the heat. The parking is nonexistent. The presentation of the cake is poor and they don’t put it in the blue “for the love of sugar” boxes they advertise. I will not be visiting again despite the cake being 5/5 in taste. There’s a million bakeries that treat people kindly. The lowest tip they request when you pay is 20% which is wildly absurd given the poor service. I am so disheartened after looking so forward to trying this place. The two Caucasian girls who yelled at us from behind the door before we even entered the place were so rude and don’t encourage anyone to want to visit again.
I have been here a few times and its always delicious. Definitely exceeds my expectations. Ive gotten the knafa cake as well as cookies and a few other things. I love that they have vegan and gluten free options as well :) They have vegan and gluten chocolate chips cookies, vanilla cake, and a few other things. Staff was friendly and helpful both on the phone and in-person. Portions are pretty big too.
GREAT DESSERTS, CUSTOMER SERVICE! VERY NICE STAFF!
Very cute place with simple and stylish decor. I love how they are following social distancing guidelines. The cinnamon rolls are delicious; they also will warm them. The ice coffee was also delicious, request extra sugar. We also had the Matilda Cake and Red Velvet which was a generous portion and very moist looking. The kids enjoyed it.
For the love of sugar must use some other kind of sugar. Bland products...
A cute dessert shop that’s just between downtown and midtown. Loved the personable service and the cakes are excellent. I have already gone back, which speaks for itself!
When youre in the need of cake but cant eat a whole one yourself... Visit For the love of sugar. You will smell the delicious baked goods when you step in the door. Vegan options, gluten free, flavors youve never tasted before! The staff here is always kind and able to offer suggestions. I cant wait to go back again and again.
Cute coffee shop that sells macaroons and cakes! Love it.. good for chilling on the patio..
My friend asked them to contact me when the cake was ready and they forgot. I picked it up within half an hour of their call, but by then, the cake was 3 days old. The owner claimed that they called several times, but my cell phone log reveals the lie. Be professional: apologize and make amends.
My husband works downtown and came home one day telling me about this great new cake place. I honestly dont even know if great is the right word for it. Everything we have ever had from here, even the birthday cake iced latte (and Im not a coffee person) has been delicious!!! Very cozy and relaxing environment. The staff is always friendly and attentive. Manal, the owner, is great. We always see her working when we go in there...even on her days off. This place is GREAT!!!!
Fantastic cake. Like, to-die-for cake! We ordered our wedding cake here and were so excited for it. Unfortunately we had to cancel since we cant make it to Detroit for our wedding (we live in Windsor). This is one of the vendors we were most looking forward to on our big day. The owner made it right for us. Thank you! We cant wait to visit again when the border allows.
Have stopped by this Midtown cake shop several times and have tried several different cakes...all good! My favorites are the dense and dark carrot cake and of course the dark chocolate Matilda cake, but the vanilla bean cake is right up there with them. Good social distancing and masks enforced inside with reduced indoor seating but plenty of space on the patio.
I counted 8 employees, but the 4 of us that were allowed in the lobby still waited a while. You can’t get a cake unless you ordered it 3 wks ago. So I got a macaron & a coffee. The macaron tasted like food coloring. 👎🏼 I’ve had much better.
Friendly service, excellent dessertsI had a slice of the 4 berry cake. I enjoyed the cake. The cake was tender and dense and there was not a huge berry flavor, if I could add more berry flavor to the layers between the cake, I would. I wanted to try more flavors and I would have tried more flavors but I was very full after one slice, I couldnt even imagine eating more cake. Of course that means I have to make another trip for more cake 💃😁👍They have plasticware [eco-friendly] for carryout or dine-in and silverware for dine-in and if you are dining in you will be served on a real plate. The French macarons are classic. They have excellent flavor. The birthday cake flavor is really buttery. I have to try more flavors but what I had so far was flavorful, and tasted pleasant. They offer coffee, specialty drinks [ex. chai, lattes, hot chocolate, affogato, cappuccino], tea, milk, milk alternatives [almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, etc], flavored syrups to make up your own flavored drink. The people who work there are polite, patient, and helpful. They answered all of my questions, and they were eager to help. There was no service issues at all. Im considered to be a black/brown girl by people even though I only feel like a woman.I did not see any booster seats, high chairs for children but I wasnt looking for booster seats or high chairs. Im sure that if you request those options they will probably have it available.Theres no table service, you bus your own table and you bring your dessert to the table yourself. Dont drop anything.Parking is not available specifically for the bakery and it is hard to find parking.Parking is free, no meters, no paid public lots/parking structures. There is handicapped parking down the street from the bakery. They do have two private/single person restrooms.Seating is available inside of the bakery. This place is probably 95% desserts and the desserts range from small French macarons to a large whole cake so the options are wide and vary in size whether you want a small snack or a full scale pig out fest, theyve got you covered. The decor is pretty, the real plates, silverware, and mugs are all very nice and I plan to visit again.Have fun folks!
They were so friendly and the cake and macarons were awesome!
The baked goods I purchased were awesome and I felt very reasonably priced! The service however was terrible! I thought the person waiting on my son and I acted like we were bothering her! As a regular of Chili, Mustard, Onion I thought this would be a great option for my sons vegan desserts! We drive from Livonia for vegan food and as a first time customer I can say customer service plays a big role in future business! We try to support small businesses during these hard times! For the Love of Sugar, wont be one of those!!
Solid gluten free and dairy free options! Also very delicious! We had macaroons and dairy free ice cream. My friend has celiac disease (gluten allergy) and I have a dairy sensitivity and we were both fine!
It was good, but standing outside in the winter is to dang cold. There was no strawberry cheese cake they dont sell it 😥
I’ll start off with the Good; which is the presentation overall was nice, the setup. The desserts 🍮 🧁 looked delectable as far as the optics we’re concerned. I feel that it was reasonably priced. The bad: was the service, as the young lady was being short with me, with a passive aggressive feel. I thought 💭 it was just me until I read the reviews and seen that this seems to be a thing. Her rude, hostile nature, made me leave in a hurry as my family spent $50 quickly and honestly would have spent more as we were looking for things to try before we left the city to go back home. The other half of it is that the desserts were very disappointing as far as taste is concerned. Given the presentation, and recommendation from an article I read, our expectations were high and now I would definitely say that When I visit Detroit again that I wouldn’t go back to this bakery 🧁.
I love the strawberry shortcake and birthday cake latte!
Yummy desserts, beautiful displays, awesome people!
Vegan and gluten free options a plenty here! was able to get macarons and cookies to take home when we came for our wedding cake consultation, glad to see a bakery with more than one vegan option a day. the staff is kind, and the pastries are fantastic.
Love this place ❤️. The cakes are fabulous. The cookies are dangerous. And there is custard Im looking forward to trying. They make a birthday plate with 1 or more separate pieces of cake so you dont have to buy a whole cake or if you know a friend loves them all. Definitely recommend this shop. If you like chocolate, get the Matilda. If you like berries, get the Triple Berry.
I would give a higher rating, but every single time I come here I’m waiting in line for 30-40 minutes. It does not make any sense.Edit: after a few more times of coming here, I can’t say enough good things about this place. They made a beautiful display for me on my anniversary with two pieces of chocolate cake along with macaroons and then knocked a cake out of the park for my girlfriend’s birthday. So I will be changing my 3 stars to 5 stars and I highly recommend them making anything for you on a special occasion.
Wonderful service and delicious cinnamon rolls!
A beautiful boutique bakery with a variety of high end treats. their macarons are luscious with so many delicious flavors to pick from. it was too cold to sit and enjoy the treats there . the staff were really patient as we oohed and aahed at their stuff before making a choice.
My favorite cakes were the Matilda (a decadent chocolate cake with chocolate ganache), Triple berry (delicious blend of berries balanced with moist cake) and the Knafe (a mediterranean dessert with bits of baklava). My favorite macarons were the honey lavendar(absolutely loved the flavor and color of this macaron)
Friendly staff, really no wait and food is delicious. Great shop for elegant digs and easily accessible.
I was introduced to this place not too long ago. The desserts are delicious and the fruity pebbles cake reminds me of my childhood. The portions are fairly big so two people should be able to share a slice of cake. The macaroons are made to perfection and the decor of the establishment is clean and aesthetically pleasing. The lines get crazy during holidays such as Valentine’s Day I had to once wait outside for 10-15 minutes until finally reaching the inside to get served. They have rose hinted cappuccinos which taste great during the spring and summer seasons. Parking is not too hard to find and you won’t regret stopping in for a quick treat.
I wish we had one of these in San Francisco! It hits on all my favorite aspects of a great dessert experience: gluten free options, open late, beautiful food, charming atmosphere, and great tea and coffee. This is a popular spot but it’s totally worth waiting a bit for a table. It’s open until midnight, which made it a great little date spot for my partner and I while we were in town. I recommend the fruity pebble macron, the vegan ice cream, and the gluten free cookie.
This place is just ok in my opinion, mostly because the desserts don’t live up to the hype. I’ve been numerous times and have tried everything from cake, cookies, cinnamon rolls, etc. The atmosphere and vibe is super cute as well as the service being good but that’s the extent of it in my opinion. And I will be honest and say I really did want to love this place but it is a pass for me.
This place is amazing! They have great bakery items from cookies to cake slices and they have vegan and gluten free options as well!
Today was my first visit; I have been eyeing this place for about a year... the wait was worth it! i tried six different macarons, a cookie and coffee! Everything was so perfect! We will be returning next weekend!
If I could rate higher than 5 starts I would! My go-to place for cake and dessert in general. You will not be disappointed, plus they carry dessert to meet dietary needs with vegan and gluten free goodies.
I love this place. My sister gushed about how good it is, so when I was in town I had to try it. The caramel pecan cinnamon rolls are to die for. Super moist and the frosting is perfect. I also had the banana cake which was fab. The employees are super nice as well. Looking forward to my next visit.
This place is amazing! My husband and I come here at least once a week. The cookies are always extremely fresh, the macaroons are amazing, the cake variety is perfect and the cinnamon rolls are amazing! They offer to warm them up in the store for you as well. The workers are always nice and welcome as well as answer any questions there is. The cookies are overall my favorite. The parking is usually really easy to find and the walk is always close. They have a good size indoor and outdoor seating accommodating for large or small parties. They also have an amazing gluten free pastry section.
Their vegan cakes are consistently delicious, week after week👏 I love this place!
Best dessert in detroit for vegans. Waiting in line is always worth it. Now I want cake...
Was referred by my best friend who ordered a wedding cake from here. They have the most unique flavors here and I love how you can see them working in the back through a window.Ordering is simple, place was super packed but line moved well.Staff was welcoming, it was nice that they offered some samples at the counter.I opted for the cinnamon roll, I couldnt say no. When I asked the worker how are the cinnamon rolls her reaction alone I knew it would be good and so it was AMAZING. I paired with a latteOverall def a good experience and will be coming back to try the rest of the goodies.
So I paid for slices to just sample a taste for my wedding cake I wouldve purchased from them, fine Im not broke. I paid almost 20 bucks. Got home and tried the strawberry shortcake flavoured cake slice, AWESOME TASTE. My fiance thought so too...about 2 hours later we got the MOST WORST stomach ache imaginable. Could hardly walk. We thought maybe it was a fluke and tried the cherry berry one..same thing. Maybe the cakes were out two long?
Great quality pastries and desserts. Customer service is phenomenal. They always go above & beyond.
You must try the kashta macaron
Visited on a Wednesday I think. This place has a nice design. Food is similar to a cafe in Indianapolis I liked.
Top notch bakery. Delicious treats. Many of them gluten free. I had a cookie sandwich in shop and took a red velvet cake to go.The cake is to die for. It’s moist and flavorful. The cream cheese frosting is thick and creamy. The cookie sandwich was good. It was moist and the texture was smooth but not as tasty as the cake. The service was great. If I had something to complain about the experience, it would be the parking. Hard to blame that on this fine shop though.
This is literally one of the best bakerys i have ever been too.the macaroons are amazing and the cakes are out of this world!!Ive ordered a lot of cakes from here before because my office for work is located very close, so every time someone has a b-day we get a cake from here and we have yet to be disappointed.I would highly, HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone!
