I’m not really sure why they’re even open for business if they don’t allow browsing. We were greeted as soon as we entered what we were looking for, then to be told browsing isn’t allowed, uh what? I understand there is a pandemic however this is not good business practice to turn away your customers. Post signs at the front door at least. Not coming back.
Walked in here last weekend to get a birthday present for my grandfather and was immediately told to get out because I “didn’t look like I was going to buy anything.” So rude, so so so so rude. Could not believe it. Just go to west side books down the street. They have a much better selection and are super friendly.
Ohhhh my heaven the rudest man I’ve ever encountered would not allow us to come into a store because he said it wasn’t open for browsing or looking around be at the door was open and locked the welcome sign was on an even offered cold drinks sign by the front door said….. if I could give them a 1/2 of a star that’s about what the deserve.
The same thing happened to me yesterday I thought it was a racial thing. Have no idea why you would have it book or toy store and not able to browse maybe the business is really just a front for some type of laundring activity? I was going to call the owner today until I saw all the posts. Im sure theyll enjoy going out of business.
She doesnt let you in to browse, she just stops at you at the door and asks what you want to buy. Lady. Your store is called TOYS AND BOOKS. Take a wild guess. If I knew what toys and what books were in the store, yknow by browsing the store, I might be able to give a specific answer. Oh well, Ill just go to a store that isnt ran by an insane person.
They made a very poor decision opening a store front where no one is allowed in to browse, no one is allowed to carry electronics, and the owners are very abrupt and extremely rude. Incredible this business has survived by preventing any business from walking through their doors. They also had a “cold drinks” sign out front. This is clearly a lie.
We were just trying to browse for some neat treasures to take back home to our children. Unfortunately, the owners stopped us right at the door informing us there’s “no browsing, what specifically are you wanting?”. Needless to say we felt obligated to walk right back out of the store as there was no sense of welcoming. It’s unfortunate, it appeared that it would’ve been a neat store that we would have purchased several items from. Oh well, everyone has their own rules related to covid so we respected it. It was just a bummer to say the least.
Just the worst people. Wish I could do zero stars. Tried to go into the store with my kid and was turned away at the front door.
I have been supporting this bookstore since it opened over 10 years ago. My husband, my grandchildren and I love this neighborhood gem.....Start by building a relationship with the owners. They are good people who honor reading, children’s discovery and want to keep technology outside the doors. Respecting their space is fair. Giving kindness, kindness will be returned....
Absolutely astounding how rude and abrasive the owners are. You are followed around the store, not allowed to browse, and YELLED at if you so much as touch a cell phone. Didn’t even have time to browse the sad and minimal selection by the time the owners attitude was so off putting we had to leave. The fact that they are still in business is astonishing. I would support ANY other small business with your hard earned money.
My wife and I were in Denver for a few days from out of state. We were walking around doing some shopping and when we walked in the owners asked us how they could help us and we said we were out shopping and wanted to look around and they said “we are closed for looking around.” Then lock your door. I’ve never experienced anything like this and by reading these other reviews, this is the norm for this store. Don’t support rudeness. These people deserve to go out of business. Support West Side books just down the street, helpful and zero rudeness....and we were allowed to look around and we bought things there...that’s how the process works. Wild.
My wife and I decided to stop in as we love to support local book stores. The door was open and we were stopped at the door and told we must tell them what we wanted to buy. We were confused and thought perhaps they were only offering curb-side pickup as some businesses are still doing due to the pandemic. Apparently this was not the case. We were told there was no browsing and that unless we told them what we wanted to buy right then (before entering the store) we were not welcome. I am glad I read these reviews or I would have thought they were discriminating against us for being a queer couple. The one solace is that at least it’s not just us!
Was shocked when I was stopped by the owner as soon as I walked in, and was informed that they don’t allow browsing. I could understand that, but she kept saying “let me tell you something”, and scolded me for every single thing I said. She would only let me look at one section in the whole store (a very small one). I felt like I had just gotten in trouble, and left a little embarrassed. Really don’t recommend this place.
I echo the last review, I don’t understand why all the negative reviews. This is a great neighborhood bookstore that we should cherish and support. It serves as my go to for kids books as birthday gifts for nephews and friends’ kids. The owners are always friendly, helpful, and provide good recommendations. Don’t let the negative reviews stop you from going here.
Scammers? My son got an invoice today for two books...totaling over $45. Now, my son is a teenager that I cant even PAY to read anything -- so to think that he would go into a bookstore and order Whiteness Of Wealth and Mexican Gothic defies reason. When I called them on it, they cancelled the invoice immediately -- no explanation, no mea culpa, just cancelled.Think twice.
Went on Saturday for small business Saturday. I received lots of help with selecting gifts. I even got 20% off for paying cash! They had cute children’s education toys and many best seller books.
I am not sure why there are so many horrible reviews - I think these people are highly misunderstood. The reason they don’t allow electronics in the store is because in the recent past, somebody took photos of their store and created a fake website in order to scam people out of money. By the time the owners realized what was happening, people had already ordered off the fake website and they had no idea why people were calling them asking where their book order was. They involved the police and initiated a formal investigation. That being said, it’s understandable that they are apprehensive about people using electronics in their store. What’s so wrong with taking 5 minutes away from your phone to browse in a bookstore anyways? Put down the phone and live on the moment.Granted they don’t have the most extensive book selection, the owners have been nothing short of kind and welcoming in every interaction I’ve had with them and deserve the benefit of the doubt.Stop being so critical of people, stop making assumptions, and stop trying to deter people from shopping in their store. They have been in business since 1995 and are just trying to make an honest living. If you don’t like the store or the vibe, that’s fine - shop somewhere else. But what gives you the right to demonize something you don’t understand and convince others that your experience is the end-all be-all?
I will never set foot in here again. I popped in around Christmas to try and find a quick gift. While I did appreciate the caution and safety measures used during the pandemic, the rude treatment by the owner is another story. She asked me why I was looking for a gift so close to Christmas (not her business, but whatever), and I told her the special gifts I had ordered were not going to arrive in time. She responded by saying“Well shame on you for shopping online. It’s your fault they won’t be here. Why would you shop online?”Well... because we’re in a global pandemic and I was hoping to avoid going into stores while pregnant.I will never forget the rude treatment, not will I ever recommend this store to anyone.
She wouldn’t let me, my husband, and our children in the store. She said she wasn’t opened for browsing only buying? But how could I buy if I can’t browse?
Hate it when awesome small businesses, like this one, get slammed on Google for no good reason.Ive been here multiple times and always found great gifts, excellent conversation, and helpful staff.
Very rude owners. I placed an order online for the bookstore up the street and mistakenly went here instead. I was confused so pulled out my phone to locate my order. She was extraordinarily rude and told me she had to shut the door so I had to get out. It’s too bad because I prefer to support local businesses. Will be going to the store up the street from now on.
We ordered a few childrens books from this place during the pandemic and they were a pleasure to deal with - they even dropped the books off at our house for free after they arrived because we dont live too far from the store!
Allow yourself to take a break from the electronic world in this charming “Mom & Pop” bookstore! The owners are friendly booklovers and will chat with you if you give them a chance. The book selection seems small at first but is well-curated and comprehensive, and of course they can order what you want just about as quickly as you-know-who. They also carry a good assortment of toys, board games and puzzles.
Who cares if they don’t want electronics to be used in their store? So they’re old school, bear with them. I had such a lovely encounter with the owners of this shop! They were so welcoming to my one year old son and I, grabbing him a box of toys to play with while I shopped for books. Nice selection of books and some very sweet toys. The owners were as friendly as can be and we enjoyed our time there. It reminded me of a small town bookstore from back in the day, before our phones ruled our lives.
From the outside, it looks like a quaint little bookstore. But customer beware! The bowels of the store house two people -- an older man and woman -- with the worst customer service skills I have ever seen! The man nearly flew from the other side of the store to scold me for pulling out my phone to snap a picture of the cover of a mass produced book. I had every intention of buying the book -- and more -- but wanted to make sure the person I was purchasing it for didnt already own it.Before I could say a word, I was told I must have missed the sign posted on the door outlining their no electronics policy.Ummm what? The sign is on an 8x10 piece of white paper you would only see if you were walking out of the building. And seriously no electronics?Give me a break! All this to say the bookstore down the street is better. I found some out of print collectibles!
Wasnt allowed to browse. The selection didnt look that great, but I couldnt tell because I was told I had to tell them what I was looking for. Just because Im not looking for something specific doesnt mean Im not looking to buy something
Yes, really - she doesnt want you to look, even before the pandemic. No cell phones - have no idea how shes stayed in business.
Horrible Owners. Bad Customer Service. DO NOT GO. DO NOT GO.My wife, three-year old, and 9 month old, are locals. We went here after a lovely day walking the neighborhood. Our goal was to buy a book for our girls. We regularly support local businesses and chose to purchase things like books, from local businesses.I WILL NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE AGAIN.The lady behind the counter immediately started to follow us and make it feel like we were going to steal something.THEN, the guy came over to yell at me about pulling my phone out. He was quick to tell me about their No Electronics Policy and said I must have missed the sign (which is on the back side of the entrance door). You will only see the sign if youre leaving.I pulled me phone out to show me daughter a photo of a dinosaur. We were looking at dinosaur books and she had a question about a particular dinosaur.Theyre rude. Unfriendly, and I encourage everyone to go elsewhere.
I wish I could give this place less than one star. Do not give these horrible people your money or business. Go anywhere else for books.Walked in with my mom today and the woman at the counter asked if I needed help finding something. I said we were just in the area and wanted to take a look around. Immediately she said “Well I have some very important work to do in the back and I have to close the store now. You have to leave” She literally walked us to the door and kicked us out.I thought I was crazy but after reading about the experiences of others...well take my advise and don’t support these idiotic owners.
Terrible customer service. The lady wasn’t even wearing a mask until we walked in. Only to be asked “what’re you buying” “we don’t allow browsing” what the hell?! She WASNT EVEN WEARING A MASK. They don’t like business so don’t give it to them.
Same experience as many others apparently. No problem with the no phone policy, it was explained to us as we entered and we kept our phones away, no issues. However after literally three minutes of browsing, we were told they needed to close the store for a few minutes with no explanation. The lady walked us to the door and locked it on us as we left. I was very confused until I came here and saw the other reviews. Dont know how they manage to stay open if this is how they treat potential customers.
There’s a good reason for the scores of reviews talking about how rude the owners are. I went in once and was yelled at for having my phone in my hand, I wasn’t even looking at it. I didn’t have a purse with me and my outfit didn’t have pockets. Not sure exactly what I was supposed to do with it. I went in a second time, forgetting the first experience, and despite there being no sign indicating that I couldn’t bring my coffee in, the owner acted like I committed a capital offense for having it. It’s fine to have rules or whatever but there’s no excuse for talking to anyone that way. This time I’ll remember not to wander back in.
We were talked to like our intent was to damage their goods and the handling of any books we touched was thoroughly scrutinized. After looking over the inventory for 10 minutes it was suggested that we should go to another shop because we weren’t finding anything to buy yet. Then at only 2 PM on a Sunday my girlfriend and I were told she was closing shop while others continued to browse without interruption.
Wow, this place is unbelievable. My wife and I wandered in and the lady asked us what we were looking for. We said we were just browsing. She then told us that that there was no time for browsing because they were getting some deliveries and we should come back later. After this experience and reading the rest of the reviews I agree with the other reviewer, it has to be a front for something! No way they can stay in business treating people this way, so weird.
I came in to shop the middle of the day, with the OPEN sign clearly visible & the door also open. The owner promptly informed me I could not look around, I had to immediately buy something. She said “I have more important administrative work in the back then helping you.” Stunned I asked if she was serious at which point she gestured me out of the store! Ever heard of simply closing your business instead of verbally abusing customers?!
It takes so much effort to be this rude and unwelcoming to people. Its truly impressive. Im sure one day well read this place was shut down because of something nefarious; I cant think of another explanation for how they treat their potential customers.
Continued experience as everyone else. I get the idea of no phones but this is not the way to be competitive, clearly. I will not be returning and seems a majority of her visitors will not be. Also needs to work on her presentation of the policy. Much better bookstore a couple blocks North (you will not be scalded for owning a phone here).
These people are wack ! Very shady. If you dont buy something asap or need their assistance they tell you to leave as they have administration work to do. Dont even walk in this place - its a waste of your time and supposedly theirs as they dont care about their customers. Zero stars.
Was browsing and the woman working there pointed out all of the sections and sales of the books and then RIGHT after, told me she had to close and kicked me out. Left a very bad impression . You’re better off taking your business to West Side Books just down the road. I won’t be back ....
I was in this store today and was going to buy a book only because I felt guilty that my two year old likes to stop in and play with the toys they have out. The door is wide open and she can see the toys from the street! I try to buy something every other time to be nice. A friend sent me a text so I checked it and was immediately scolded for using my phone. Nobody else was in the store and my phone was on silent and I was watching my kid like a hawk. She asked me to put it in my purseand I replied that Im not carrying a purse. She said, a pocket is fine. I was wearing yoga pants and a sweater, no pockets! So I looked at the women and said Ill just leave! I used to just deal with the no phone policy but its 2018,I think they want to go out of business. Ill never go back. West side books is a better choice on 32nd and Second Star to the Right on Tennyson has many of the same toys. The people who run this store are strange and rude.
I love this bookstore like no other. Its like the Room of Requirements for books. I love the owner and the staff. This is no Barnes and Noble... this store has books and crannies filled with treasure.
Nice quaint toy shop with a good selection of books. Its a shame to see companies like Amazon put stores like this one out of business. Somehow theyre holding on! Go support your local small business!
Same experience as many others here. Owner cant compete with pricing elsewhere so their answer is to ban electronics, and scold customers. There is a MUCH BETTER book store right down the street right down the street. I cant believe these people are still in business.
Im glad to see that Im not the only one who felt so awful when shopping here. My 7-yo son and I have a policy: he sees something he likes and I take a picture of it then he earns it. I take the picture because he had ADHD and sometimes he cant hold on to a memory and gets really upset. The owner immediately came over to me and scolded me, then said theres a sign on the door. 1. The door was propped open; 2. the sign is tiny. I understand why a small business owner would not want anyone shopping around for a better price on Amazon, but that wasnt what we were doing--and it seems to me that many other people have the same experience. There are plenty of reasons to be using your phone in a bookstore beyond price comparison, and in my case its a coping mechanism for a very anxious boy who needs some reassurance. Shame on them for jumping to conclusions. I returned to the store last weekend because we were at the farmers market and my kids wanted to go in, and I saw her chiding several people. We actually purchased two small trinkets for the kids and she impatiently waited for us to leave so she could shut the door behind us. Such strange behavior.
Do not waste your time! We walked in the store, were told the store had a sale that ended yesterday and now “the price is the price except for special customers.” After that she asked if we minded if she closed the store for a few minutes, which wasn’t a problem for us except, when we sat outside to wait for her to reopen, she ran us out because we hadn’t bought anything 😐. I echo the rude comments and we definitely will not be returning OR recommending.
I had basically the same experiences as every other reviewer. I walked in today through the open door, said hello to the lady behind the counter who merely nodded at me. I was the only customer in the store, two employees (presumably one was the owner) and neither of them offered to help me. I browsed for a bit. I was going to text my bf to see if a particular toy would be a good gift for his friends 1-yos birthday this weekend. Suddenly the staff cared about my presence. The man asked if there was something he could help me with as the woman reprimanded me for having my phone out when they have a small no electronics sign on their door. I honestly didnt see the sign, as the door was propped open and I walked right past it. The man was attempting to be friendly, but I was so thrown off by the situation that I just left. Definitely need to improve customer service. After all these reviews, Im not sure how this place stays open. The woman was definitely rude. Put signs on the walls inside if youre going to prop the door open all the time, this way your customers see it. And be nicer about explaining the policy to them. You catch more flies with honey.
My girls love going into this book store! The owners are very friendly and we always leave with something fun. They have a great selection of toys, science experiments, arts and crafts and books.
Id give them a zero if I could. Same experience as everyone else. I wanted to check out my to read list on my phone. Kept getting scolded. Then left without buying anything because I was annoyed. Then within a block decided to support my local business and I returned. Only to be scolded again while trying to decide which single book Id get from my phone list. I finally purchased one and left, but looking back I wish I hadnt.Honestly, this store must be a front. Theres no way a prime 32nd street location like that is bringing in a decent income off of books (especially when the reviews at this point are so terrible). Besides that, the way they act about phones is OUT OF CONTROL. They act sooo weird about it that they must be hiding something. I literally had to suppress my anger towards this woman in order to make a local purchase. I actually hope they go out of business. Just so that something/someone with better emotional intelligence opens something up in its place. Its a waste of space at this point.
I felt like I was on a episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, so rude it’s laughable
The staff was very helpful and friendly. I dont believe all the one star reviews are justified. Maybe people should try disengaging from their phones once in a while.
Walked in with my phone and a moment later I hear cant you read? NO PHONES did a quick about face and walked right out speechless and analyzing if I did anything wrong... I was looking for thus spoke Zarathustra and didnt even get to say good morning or hi... I felt so uneasy until I looked them up and saw similar reviews. P. S their sign was pathetic and tiny and on a 4 X 8 printer paper
Rude, abrasive, unhelpful. I was looking for a specific children’s book but couldn’t remember the author. The owner yelled at me “No photos!” for taking out my phone. When I explained that I was trying to remember the name of the book she said. “Absolutely no phones, we are small and probably don’t have it.” I had another item in my hand that I was going to buy but I put it back after that experience. They don’t seem to care about customer service at all.
Have gone here for years, but never again. My ten year old asked to go here to look for Xmas ideas. Folks like his grandma and aunts want to know what he wants. He had a piece of paper and was writing things down. Owner came up to us five times before finally saying he couldn’t make a list. Seriously, this is not how to compete with Amazon. We’ll go to Tattered cover next time.
First off, I love mom & pop stores and I would much rather support a place like this than Barnes and Nobel, even if it means shelling out a few extra bucks... if they were nice! Unfortunately I have to concur with the previous reviews! I walked in this store and I tried to say hello to the lady behind the counter and she just looked at me and went back to what she was doing. I had a book in my hand and I got a text message so I set the book down and began to respond only to immediately and very harshly be told that I was not allowed to write down book titles. She then went on a harangue about people who write down titles and never come back to buy and their shop is just trying to survive. I told her I completely understand and that I love the selection she has but I dont have money for the three books I want so I would like to get the one book and come back for the others. She told me she has never seen me before so she didnt think I would be coming back, but when you want something and dont have the money you should put it on hold. *note that she did not offer to put it on hold* I told her that information was much more helpful than the aggressive attitude she started out with, to which she snarkily replied that this shop has been here a long time and they are just trying to survive. I told her that I no longer wished to purchase anything from someone who is so rude and she said I knew that was going to happen. Really? You knew that being rude to people would drive them out of your shop? Shocking! If your shop is trying to survive then why offend a customer who has already said they would like to buy something? I am very sad that such a cute little shop has such a terrible attitude!
Apparently browsing isn’t allowed. I was escorted around the store & then the owner proceeded to hover and breathe over my shoulder as I was looking at gift options. Not exactly socially-distanced, nor particularly friendly. I should have read other the reviews before entering
Ive never experienced anything like the horrible customer service in this store. 1. They were all in our business asking questions when clearly we were needed time to browse and assess our options for gifts for our nephews. 2. I asked how late they were open (9pm was the answer) so I could go to a coffee shop to use the bathroom since theirs was not usable because it is currently being used for storage. 3. With about 100 dollars worth of things we wanted to buy, we were asked to leave at 650 pm since they were getting a delivery. 4. The no electricronics rule was ridiculous! I had to stand outside in the cold to text my sister in law to see if her boys had candy land or chutes and ladders. We tried supporting a local business rather than buy the same games, books, and toys on amazon that they have in store (for cheaper even) but we were treated so horribly that we are now planning on ordering our gifts from Amazon. Its sad to see a small business operate like this when Im sure they are struggling against larger stores and the internet.
We love 32nd avenue Books Toys and Gifts in the Highlands area of Denver. It is in a perfect location for just popping into after you get a cup of coffee or quick lunch. Also, i really appreciate the variety of things they have... The owner, Celia, Is always friendly when we go in to browse. Highly Recommended.
Rude owner and uninteresting book shop. Dont waste your time or money at this joke of a shop.
Cool toys and high prices. Owner wasnt rude per se but defintdefi couldve been a bit nicer about the no phones in here reminder. Of course there could be sensory differences or other factors at play so I try not to just label the behavior as rude, but it def was a bit Sheldon if you watch hug bang theory .very particular. Wont be back as my kids and I prefer to be in a more free environment.
Just left this store and was shocked to see that the negative reviews mirror my exact experience. Though, archaic, I can respect the store owners’ “no electronics” policy (to each their own); but to literally not be able to hold your phone while on the sales floor (my sister was asked to put hers away)? Makes me wonder what they are hiding. Both the woman in charge and the gentleman working made a point to hover and watch while we perused. The gentleman was originally sitting in the window area (reserved only for staff) and then stood with the woman and watched our every move. I don’t typically leave reviews unless I have something wonderful to share, but this was one of the most unpleasant shop experiences I have ever had.
I was here, browsing. Not a good selection. I opened my phone to look at my list of books I’m interested in reading and they seriously kicked me out. Like escorted me out. I get it, they have “no electronics” posted on their door. But there is a difference between someone being attached to their phone throughout the store and someone opening up an electronic to look at their book list and buy something. Also, they could have just given me a warning and I would have happily put my phone away. In fact, I tried to put it away and apologize because I didn’t know about the policy. But they were already escorting me out. Really rude, too.
Same experience as all the other reviews. Tried to look up my want to read books on my Goodreads app to see if I wanted to buy any of the books. The owner rudely told me Im not allowed to use my phone, but she told me this AS SHES TALKING ON THE PHONE WITH SOMEONE. Left without buying anything and walked down the street to an amazing book store with a much better selection and much friendlier vibes.
God forbid you need to contact someone about buying a gift here. I read and registered the no electronics sign out front. I agree, in general, that people who dont silence their phones, or come into a store talking on their phone or playing music are often disruptive. It makes sense to have a sign up and policy to prevent that. I walked in and found a toy that I wanted to purchase for a friends kid. I texted that friend to find out whether or not I could buy the toy for his son... my phone was silenced, and it was completely innocuous - not in the least bit disruptive. The owner took it upon herself to abruptly leave a conversation with someone else and chide me from across the store. I told her the purpose of my phone use and she said to, put it in your pocket. Fine. I did, and left. There are PLENTY of other locally-owned shops to find fun items and books for kids, most of which have owners that arent jerks.
I should have read the reviews before going there and It is just as everyone says. The owner watches you like a hawk as if they expect you to steal something. And god forbid you if you pull out your phone! I was on my way out, not even by any books or toys and she made sure to stop me and tell me no phones.Seriously!?
There is a small book selection and the staff are rude. I was texting my husband so we could meet down the block for happy hour (and about to buy a book) when they rudely told me to get off the phone and then pointed to a small sign on a door covered with other stickers and signs. I dont mind the policy but if most potential customers are not aware of it, then it is unnecessary to be rude.
I was planning on buying a bunch of children’s books for my niece. I support a small local businesses during Christmas time so I assumed this place would be perfect. I wanted to call my brother to read off the titles, just so I wouldn’t buy a repeat of a book she already had.... and I was super excited by the multiple books I was about to purchase... when someone came up harshly telling me to put my phone down and that I was not allowed to use my phone. When I tried to ask about making a phone call to check on the books, he interrupted me and told me no. Although the books are perfect, I’d rather drive down to Boulder’s bookstore to support a local business than encourage someone’s rude behavior, so I left without buying any of them.
See either reviews, tried to make note of a book on my phone while purchasing another book and was instantly scolded. Basically accused me of being unable to afford my items. Thought the phone thing might be a weird aversion to electronic waves but the owners had no problem using their own phones and technology. So bizarre and unwelcoming.
Worst small business I’ve ever been inWhat a shame for such a good areawent in with my toddler she’s 3 years oldShe was looking around to see which toy she would take I said we could get oneI seen a wooden Yo YoTried it she liked it grabbed it decided to walk around. While the lady at the counter on her phone said “she’s not tall enough for that”“She’s going to knot it” took the yo-yo away from my daughter as she started to cry the lady then proceeds to tell me “thanks for coming” with a ugly smirk on her face as if she did it all on purpose. For that we left and won’t be back and I hope people don’t encounter this person going in- bad vibes Good concept horrible customer service. 8-18-181pm
Not the welcoming atmosphere one would expect from a childrens book/toy store. The phone policy is whatever but the staff? Not very friendly at all. Went in to buy my niece a neat gift but instead left empty handed and feeling like a delinquent for touching anything.
Being a fairy that writes books for kids, I happily found this lovely mom and pop book and toy store on one of my fairy visits to the Highlands in Denver. They were kind enough to invite me to bring some of my books down to display in their store for the children of this little lovely Denver Neighborhood.. Many months went by and they sold them all! In fact they invited me to bring some more of my books and fairy magic down and participate in the Highlands Street Fair this Saturday! Ill also be giving away some fairy crowns to a few very lucky children!! Come down Saturday June 15th at 11am! - Thimble the Fairy!
More than once with my 4 year old daughter we were asked to leave so they can do stuff in the back. The last time my 4 yr old cried leaving because we were looking for a toy but I guess we werent fast enough haha. Never take my phone in thats not the issue. They are rude and unkind.
Do not shop here. The staff is rude and treats you like you’re beneath them. I was trying to pull up an email for a book I needed to buy and after staring at me for 5 minutes while I pulled the email up, I was told No Phones Allowed. This shop has the bare minimum of what you would want. It’s a shame that people aren’t willing to treat people with respect. Who doesn’t allow phones anymore? So weird. Save yourself the trouble and find another place to look for books or games.
I always try to shop local, but I must say I will never go here again. Two days ago I went in, bought nearly about $80 in books and today I went back in to look for another book and was scolded for looking on my phone. I was on my phone trying to find the name of an author so I could see if they had her books (so I could obviously buy it from them and support their store), but instead I promptly left and let them know I would never be back. Terrible way to do business. I guess I know why there is never anyone in there.

My experience is the same as everyone elses. How is this store still in business? It is so customer unfriendly. Even without the no cell phone policy, the shop owner stares at you as your browse the store. It made me feel so uncomfortable. I love supporting my local businesses, but not this one.
I was out with two young girls waiting for my husband to finish an appointment when we wandered into this bookstore. It seemed quite cute and my girls were drawn to a number of toys. I was going to let them each pick one out. However,my husband called and I answered it to tell him how to get to where we were, I wanted him to see the store as well. Immediately I was scolded for having my phone. There were no other customers, Im not sure how I was being disturbing or how else I was supposed to tell my husband how to meet us? It was so off putting I will not be back. It really is too bad.
I understand the no pictures in the store but to be asked to get off my phone entirely when I was going to bring more customers into the place really offended me I will not be back nor will I bring anybody into that place all the cool toys they have you can find them online for cheaper
From the moment you walk in the door, you will feel a sense of uncomfortableness surrounding you. If you plan on browsing for books, expect the owner to be watching you like a hawk. You will get kicked out if you use your cell phone - and be ready to get kicked out if you ask them to order a book for you.I am absolutely stunned that this mom & pop bookstore can even stay in business. They make you feel like you are not supposed to walk into their store - and I highly recommend that you visit any bookstore but this one.
Wolf in sheeps clothing. A friend and I went in to check out the selection and were really surprised at all the wonderful titles. We didnt see the No Electronics sign honestly, and once my friend pulled out her phone to take a photo of a book cover to see if her fiancee wanted the book, the woman swooped down like a hawk and told us we were not allowed to take pictures or use our phones at all. After a couple of minutes my friend found a couple other titles she wanted to remember so I gave her a notebook and pen out of my bag. About 5 seconds later the woman came back over and said Hey I have to go somewhere and close the store so you need to leave and escorted us out of the store! We strolled the farmers market and noticed she was there, door still open, Open sign still up, watching our every move.So instead we walked down the street to West Side Books, a place that will forever and always have our business, and bought several titles there.
Went in with the intent to buy but decided not to after the owner was first weird about us bringing a drink in and wouldn’t let us walk around with it. Then had a mini panic attack after I walked on the rug that’s directly in the middle of the room. She needs to chill a little. We were the only ones I there and they didn’t even offer to help us besides scold us. Made us uncomfortable so we left without buying anything for my nephews birthday that was in a few hours. Try and be more accommodating and make people feel welcome and comfortable. Side note. I think there’s a no phone policy because they don’t want you to check prices and see that they’re three times higher than everywhere else.
Like many other reviewers, I was rudely told to get off my phone. I get not wanting customers to be talking on the phone in a bookstore, but I pulled my phone out to google reviews of a book I was considering purchasing. The lady at the register yelled at me and said Did you see the sign? No electronics in here. Worst customer service Ive ever experienced. Youre driving away potential customers with that attitude. Terrible terrible terrible. Do not shop here - I will not be back.
Awful place. Owner threw me out for getting a text message. Turns out theres a sign that says No Electronic Devices and he has a one strike policy. Id noticed him peeking around the shelves at me the whole time. Make him and yourself comfortable by staying out of the store.
My husband, myself and our young daughter sadly had the same experience as most other reviews for this store. We live in the neighborhood and try to support local businesses. These people are rude and we won’t be giving them our business again.
Ive been in here multiple times to look around. Well tonight I gave it one more shot but the lady that is here is beyond rude. She acts like my husband and I are going to steal something. This place just lost out on a couple customers tonight!!! Guess its not ok to go and browse through a book store anymore! Disappointing!
I agree with the other negative reviews here... I love supporting small business, but I honestly hope this place goes under soon so that something better can open up in its place! I was on lunch (ate at Seras Ramen Enclave, great food and service) and decided to go here because I had some time left to kill. I got a work email and was reading it and the owner/clerk ran over and told me Im not allowed to take pictures of books or have electronics out in the store. I told her I was checking an email and she just pointed to a sign on the door... After asking why they have this obscure policy, it basically came down to the fact they dont want you to see reviews or prices of the items they sell. I always check reviews of products no matter where Im shopping, and dont care usually if it is cheaper on Amazon, Ill purchase it local, just want to know if its a junk product. Lost my business for good and I hope they lose enough to shut down.
I don’t know how this place is in business, they don’t let people look at books and won’t sell.
I wouldnt even give this shop 1 star.... The lady behind the counter could not have been more hateful and rude.So much for trying to support a local mom and pop shop. It really makes me wonder how on earth they even survive with the hateful attitude youre treated with.I will never set foot in this store again!
Haha reading all the reviews and they’re just too accurate. This lady is so unfriendly and rude, I walked out and never went back. Books should be a positive experience... and there’s another amaaazing shop right down the road on 32nd and Lowell!
There is a sign posted outside the store that says “no electronic devices” expecting this meant a computer. The lady went off on me when I pulled my phone out to text the mother of the child I was with and the lady went off on me about “their policy”. It is 2018 and unrealistic to expect someone is not going to have a cell phone in a store. Then shortly after she told me to leave because she “had to do something” and kicked me and the two year old out very aggressively. The two year old was screaming because she just wanted to play and the lady almost physically pushed us out of the store. Not a way to treat customers and especially children when you’re a TOY STORE!
For some strange reason when a friend and I walked into this shop, the proprietor asked us to turn off our phones. Thats fine, apparently this place doesnt want paying customers.
Do not shop at at this store. I was Christmas shopping with my 6 year old son and writing notes on my cellphone. The employee-an old man- kept creepily staring at us and told us to leave because I was using my cellphone. I told him I was making a Xmas list and he said “It doesn’t matter, you need to leave.” How is this place in business? If anyone wants to join me in going to the store and deliberately using a cellphone as a protest...let’s do it! Or just get books elsewhere until the store shuts down. 😀 It would not surprise me if they find themselves in a discrimination lawsuit very soon.
Everything you read is true. Horrible experience. Its almost as if youre part of some sick joke. Worst customer service Ive ever experienced in my life. Its almost as if they hate money as much as they hate people.
We dont let people write anything down in the store. um really? Im standing in line to pay for books....
Pretty rude customer service. Definitely not bookstore friendly.
I am sadden that today with all the internet shopping that can be done, I choose to shop at this local book store. I love supporting small, independent shops. I was looking for Christmas & birthday ideas for my son. I started to take notes via my cell phone. (I had read the sign out front) but misunderstood it, as not to take calls in their store. Something I do not mind following. I started to take note of what my child wanted and was told not to use my phone. Ok, then I asked for pen & Paper to write down the gifts I was planning on buying him from this store. Was promptly told I could not record any information. Saddens me greatly, I thought this little store was worth supporting. To be watched like I was stealing something, to be dismissed and essentially told my money is no good there. Fine 32nd Avenue Book you must be doing ok without. At some point you need the public to come in and shop.
Walked in with my phone in my hand and was immediately asked not toUse my phone while in the store. Turned around and left. Possibly would have bought something. Dont get why Im not allowed to use my phone while shopping.
I started to take a pic of a book to see if my fiance would like it. She said no phones, so I agreed and put my phone away. Later, I took out a pen and paper to write down an idea that occured to me and she approached, told me that they had to go somewhere and were closing. She literally chased us out with a lie.
The shop owner completely ignored me when I couldnt find the book I was looking for, but when I pulled out my phone to look up the author, she wasted no time in scurrying across the shop to reprimand me for using electronics (which is apparently against store policy).
The owner didnt greet me upon entering because she was busy looking at something on her cell phone. Five minutes later she reprimanded me, not politely, for trying to check a text on my phone-I didnt even get it out of my pocket. Is that a joke? Shes on her phone when you walk in and she runs around the store scolding people?! She then refused to let my 3 year old use her restroom. Im a small business owner and this is no way to treat potential customers.Aside from this, very limited selection that looks like its been sitting there for months. Sad because this neighborhood could use a quality place now that real baby is gone.
Very rude old lady, will not return
