My partner and I have been playing MTG for nearly a decade. We are pretty casual, kitchen table players, but that being said, we buy every set and keep up with everything. We make it a point to visit local card/game shops when we travel. We have been to dozens of stores and this one became a favorite immediately. The staff was very friendly and while they don’t have the space for every single brand, they carry quality products in fun colors and designs!Their board game selection is fun and they pack a lot of options into their space! I was very excited to see the variety of LGBTQIA+ dice (and other very cool dice) options. The store has very good Covid protocol. Additionally, they carried some products that were made by local/small creators. Love to see it! We absolutely loved this store!!!

I have been to many card shops in my life and I have found perhaps that most extensive collection of cards and books and tabletop games which is nice but currently they are still enforcing masks despite the state saying vaccinated people dont need one for a virus that has a 0.001 chance of lethality. And the dont seem to respect the second amendment as far as treating a law abiding citizen just getting some cards for a deck as a criminal. I wish I could leave more stars but their moral stand point on personal liberties and freedoms is too restricted for me to go back.

Very well sorted TCG store. Every time we come up from Dayton we stop by and they never disappoint. I will say they are on the expensive side, not crazy, but when you can get the same things for 5-20 bucks cheaper elsewhere, it adds up, especially when that means you will not be able to get the same amount of booster packs.

I really want to rate this place a 5. The vibe in the store is nice, they have a great product selection, and it is quite clean for a game store. However, I cant, in good faith, give a store a 5 star review that values mammon over community. When the new Shining Fates release dropped, instead of honoring their repeat customers with Elite Trainer Boxes at $49.99 (the retail price), they instead sold them for $125 each! The Soldiery has a lot going for it, but too often it reduces itself to scalpers with a storefront. If that is the business model you prefer, then you will have a good experience here.

Ive primarily gone to The Soldiery for Pokémon cards, as they are one of they few places that have any in stock at the moment. I dont play many card games but they have a solid selection of board games, card games and collectibles. Throughout the pandemic they have enforced common sense regulations - wearing masks, limiting people in store, plastic guards at register and keeping 6 feet distance. The staff have been friendly and really listen before they make recommendations. They have been very helpful in answering questions & when they dont have an answer they are quick to point me in the right direction.

Edit, this was formerly a 5 star review. The Soldiery is a good enough general purpose gaming store and has a decent selection of war gaming miniatures in addition to model making supplies. I recently asked for a special order for a Games Workshop product. After about 6 weeks they had not received my order and did not know when/if it would arrive. For unreliability in special orders I am deducting 1 star from my initial review.

This store was where I learned to draft MtG, and made a lot of good friends. Ive been through a lot of ups and downs with the Soldiery over the years, but with the decreasing prize support for organized play, rapidly rising prices far above their competition, and recent price gouging, I cannot conscionably advocate for this store, despite the nostalgia. I like to support my LGS and small businesses, but this stores prices have become increasingly more inflated at a time when most stores are doing everything they can to attract and reward their customers patronage. I feel a bit betrayed, and that the Soldiery is merely exploiting/milking their loyal customers, rather than trying to maintain them or grow their playerbase.

I gotta say the Soldiery is better than Packrat Comics, which is closer to me and been going to since I was but a wee lad of ten. I always go to the Soldiery now because (well for starters I started being able to drive five years ago) their stock is much better and I enjoy the fact that I can buy MTG booster boxes, Yu-Gi-Oh products, card protectors/storage (especially Japanese size), and everything DnD related that I could hope for, all without worrying about when their next shipment is coming in for MOST things. If I had any suggestions, it would be on Yu-Gi-Oh stocking. I know that the game itself has fallen a bit since its height, with MTG and Pokémon commanding a lot of ex-Yu-Gi-Oh players now (some friends included). However, I still know that there are consumers out there who desperately want a place to get YGO products that isn’t general stock from Walmart, Target, and Meijer.Unfortunately I have found chain stores to have generally better new-release YGO stock than one of the actual OTS stores in the area, the Soldiery. If I want new structure decks, Legendary Duelist boxes (seasons 1&2), or any YGO booster box valued at above $65 I have to go to a superstore or an online vendor, regardless of release timing. If there even is a set of value in stock, for example Toon Chaos booster boxes (Unlimited or 1st Edition), the sales to the public are limited. I asked if any booster boxes were in stock for that set at the time and was told no. At checkout I asked for a few loose packs, and the same employee busted out a fresh sealed booster box, which I immediately asked about purchasing. I was told no, understandably, because what they had meant was there are no sealed boxes for sale because the remainder are being used for loose pack sales. I have no issue with that, everyone deserves a chance to open that set, but it just shows the true problem. Ikoria, Ravnica, and Kaldhiem MTG booster boxes are in stock and for sale to the public every time I go in, along with others, and yet Yu-Gi-Oh stock is never there.I want to support this store for all of my nerd purchases, but it’s been rather apparent that Yu-Gi-Oh isn’t their priority or supported on the same level as MTG, Pokémon, and RPG games when it comes to stocking. That may just be because the demand for YGO is dropping, but I guarantee if establishedYu-Gi-Oh OTS stores don’t support the game itself, players and old fans and potential new players are doomed to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Thought this place was awesome, till I realized just how much they mark stuff up. Im not talking a few dollars, Im talking like $10 to $20 markups on top of normal retail pricing that can be found online or even at other stores in the local Columbus area. Theyre just straight-up fleecing people. Id only go here as a last resort. Youre better off going to Guardtower off trabue or UGA games off bethel.I dont think it was always like this.. I used to draft on Friday nights here during Innistrad and Avacyn Restored and dont remember them being like this. Perhaps new ownership. There were at least 4 employees working, which is maybe why they mark up so much to pay for their wages.YMMV here.

Probably the most extensive board game options in town for such a small spot and easy to get to being off the 2/102 line. Everything is usually priced at normal retail so youll spend more than buying online but thats fine with me to a point to support a local business.Sells Magic packs and singles too but they often sell some new items in higher demand at above retail price (i.e. each Commander deck having a different price) but sometimes a few of them will be below retail price so thats great if its the one you wanted... then again if youre willing to pay a bit more for the set you want now theyll probably have it in stock.I guess I pointed out bad stuff but its really a good place, most of the employees seem nice and as mentioned they got most everything board game wise, very few times they didnt have an expansion I was looking for.

I really enjoy The Soldiery, and I try to support my LCS. However, it is getting really hard to do so when their prices are so much higher than other places. I wanted to buy a board game today, and they were asking for $50 for it, while all the other vendors had it for $35. Stack this on top of the fact that the creator of the game has made the game free to produce on your own, and I could not justify this purchase. Several other things we have wanted to buy have been significantly higher than others’ prices, and they do not price match. They also *allegedly* use signal blockers in their building so you can’t check card prices inside the store. There is literally ZERO cell phone service inside this building. Thought that that was illegal.

UPDATED, see bottom paragraph.Pros:Selection of games approached only by the Guardtower in Central Ohio.Good community, lots of events.Lots of parking, relatively good location.Kent is very knowledgeable and experienced within the industry.Cons:Kent also possesses almost no service skills, though hes toned down the Comic Book Store Guy routine as of late, and every other employee is extremely helpful and polite.Very cramped quarters. Not a problem for most, but at certain events it can become claustrophobic.Previously, players could freely play within the store for any period of time without making a purchase (although this was highly discouraged in most cases). As of January 1st, the store has implemented a $5 minimum purchase in order to utilize its very limited space, a change which may annoy some, but is reasonable considering the large volume of customers the store services. My standard patronage habits mean that this has minimal impact, so my rating remains unchanged.

The staff here are more than just knowledgeable, theyre overwhelmingly passionate about their work. I know thats cliche for a nerd shop, but they trade the entitled know-it-all holier-than-thou attitude for a more welcoming excited-that-youre-playing mentality with an eagerness to introduce you to your next night of fun. These are people who havent become jaded by working in a hobby shop, but rather, are empowered by it and by you visiting. After a few minutes in the shop - and doubly so if you take a chance and speak to someone working there - youll feel as comfortable spending a couple minutes to a few hours here as you would at your favorite restaurant. They carry all sorts of geekery, but to give a quick rundown, they have a mezzanine of alphabetically sorted minis for games from D&D to 40K, including paints and scenery. On the lower level they have numerous tables available to play with large groups on (call ahead for seating, this place is pretty popular). They have a Pokemon adoption center featuring the 8 Pokemon plush toys from all generations, as well as other Pokecollectibles. In the back, theres a vast library of alternative board games, including every obscure game that Amazon advertises to you but youd rather see in person before buying, as well as a smaller shelf of games hand selected for younger players, ages 5 to 10/12ish.They carry a lot of trading card games, including MTG in box and singles, as well as buckets and buckets of dice. They have an enclosed glass case that contains more rare finds for nerds looking to show off collectible pieces, and depending on whats been brought in, they often have painted minis on display and available for purchase. With the recent resurgence of D&D, they have added an entire wall of D&D paper based items, where I found the Tarokka Deck amidst a slew of other mini-games and full campaign books.Whenever you visit, make a point to ask about what youre going to purchase. There is a very good chance that theyll not only have variations available, but that theyll have a way to add some flourish to it, as well as keep you in the loop on new products coming that will likely seamlessly float into your campaign. To be blunt, the owners have done an incredible amount of work to make this the best alt hobby shop in Columbus, and if you spend a little time here, I think youll agree. Despite the stores smaller size, theyve crammed a ton into it without making the shop feel cramped. Every time I go I find something new to spend 30 minutes mulling over spending my paycheck on, and I think thats half the fun of having a nerd hobby personality. These guys are great. Go here.

This place... Is an experience. Its not the kind of place you would expect to get a five star rating on anything from anyone. Its essentially a stockroom behind a comic book shop. The place is cobbled together and crowded. The lightbulbs are probably the most advanced technology in the place.Theres no other hobby store around here Id rather hang out at. For all the haphazard clutter it feels like a crazy dream some old guy had about owning a hobby game shop and made happen through sheer force of will (Im 98% certain thats the actual story behind this place). It doesnt matter that its not some super-modern big cooperate chain game shop. Its better than that. Its the cozy place you go to get lost in your fantasy games with great friendly competition. Its the place that keeps the older-than-my-dad can vending machine working and stocked. Its the place that sells the individual packs of crackers and chips because Im going to stay way longer than I planned every time and thats probably my dinner tonight. Its the game shop where the bathrooms are clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. Its the place where your bank account weeps when you walk through the door, and not because their prices are high (Ive shopped around, for what I buy theyre easily the best deal in town) but because youll want to buy everything every time. Its the place I can get lost in for hours though theyre probably only about the size of my tiny apartment. There simply arent enough stars to give this place.
