Starting with the price, it’s better than what you’d get at Starbucks for a grande latte (4.25 vs 4.00) and considering how expensive Charleston is, it’s a very fair price. The atmosphere is perfect for studying. If your aesthetic is white with wood with hints of green from the plants, this is perfect. It’s a bright, clean environment perfect for studying. I imagine those going to the med school or universities come here to study. Got a plain iced latte and it was excellent and took a sip of the cappuccino, probably the best cappuccino I’ve had in the States. So it’s quality espresso and so there’s no need to add syrups for the sake of guising low quality coffee. Would recommend to anyone (disclaimer, if you want it in a glass/mug and not a plastic cup, just ask for it to be in a glass/mug).
Had a great iced brown sugar oatmilk latte here. Cute little place with ample seating, a few muffin varieties and scones. Love the rotating seasonal syrup flavor options too. Would gladly come back. Highly recommended.
Coffee was good, but I feel like Ive gotten better service in the afternoon versus the morning. It took a long time for my coffee to be made because the workers decided to do other things after I ordered my coffee and did not seem overly friendly. People who ordered after me got their coffee before I did. I finally had to ask when mine would be ready as I waited for several minutes. I get there is a worker shortage, but one would assume getting customers orders would be a higher priority instead of stocking items. If I come back it definitely wont be in the morning.
Too hipster for its own good? We came here while visiting the area at the recommendation of several friends. Living in Nashville, we’ve tried some pretty epic coffee spots. This was not an epic coffee spot.First, my wife’s vanilla latte was more like a vanilla hot water. She couldn’t finish even 10% of it. I tried it, too, and agreed with her dislike. It was the worst latte either one of us had ever tasted. Or not tasted.Next, my iced cappuccino was more like a cappuccinoed ice. See picture for reference. Three sips and I was finished. Finally, I’ve never regretted tipping someone more than the tip I gave the barista before we actually got our drinks. He was honestly pretty rude to us, but I figured a tip might turn things around. It did not turn things around.TLDR: Not worth walking the extra two or three blocks from the main downtown areas to experience Second Rate Coffee.
Enjoyed some iced coffee and a scone to-go. Everything tasted great and the shop was very quaint and neatly arranged with a modern air to it. Only a few minutes away walking from our hotel in the French quarter, so it was easy to get to.
I was looking forward to returning after my last visit here during a weekend in Charleston. Unfortunately, the cashier Clare was so extremely rude to us more than once during our 5 minute visit. For that reason alone I will not be back. However, in addition, the cold brew was very sour and both my boyfriend and I ended up trashing almost our entire drinks. A nice memory ruined.
Awesome coffee in a nice, bright setting. The staff were friendly and professional. Espresso was smooth and delicious (plus served with a little sparkling water) and pricing was reasonable. Theres quite a bit of merchandise with their brand on it, which was slightly odd but maybe some people are super brand-loyal in the neighborhood.
I love a really good coffee shop. So whenever I travel, I have to check at least a few out. I decided to stop in before heading home from Charleston. The shop is pretty small. Very minimal and clean. There is a small area in the front for seating but it was extremely packed especially for a Thursday morning. The barista was super friendly, welcoming and helpful. I ordered an iced lavender almond milk latte. The espresso is so smooth! And the lavender isnt overly sweet which I really appreciated! Delish!Prices are reasonable.Parking is a limited. Fortunately, I was able to scoop up front street parking!
This is by far one of the best coffee shops in the Charleston area. Both locations are aesthetically pleasing and the coffee is superb! The cappuccino is fantastic as well as the danish. The downtown location is just a short walk from mainstream king street and a nice break for locals from the bustling typical summer downtown.
I live locally and Second State is my favorite coffee shop. Their drinks never disappoint and I love their banana Nutella turnover! The baristas are always friendly and even bring my drinks and food over so I don’t have to walk to the bar.
Great coffee and pastries. Seeked out this shop when I was in town after ordering their beans over mail multiple times. The shop seems a little slammed doing pour overs as the employee doing the pour overs was in charge of that and the register. After my partner finished half of her drink during our wait for my pour over I ended up just asking for a drip which was fantastic.
Lovely little coffee shop while visiting Charleston. My husband said it was one of the best cups of coffee he’s ever had. I’m not the biggest coffee drinker and I even thought it was delicious too. I think the beans were from Ethiopia. Friendly staff and great little place to have a quiet cup of coffee.
One of the best coffee places in Charleston! If you love a Flat White then you’ll like 2nd State Coffee - strong espresso that’s rich and tasty without the bitterness, milk is frothed perfectly resulting in a smooth silky texture. The cafe space is big, light and bright, and there’s free Wifi too. Perfect place to hang out for an hour or so. They also serve a few pastries if you’re in need of some carbs.
Had the shaken espresso with brown sugar syrup and it was amongst the best iced coffee drinks Ive ever tried. GF got an Iced Coffee with a splash of oatmilk and it was terrible (weak, grassy).
Very cozy and peaceful atmosphere! No complaints of their coffee. I had a cup of Tanzania peaberry, it was okay. I am very picky with coffee, so please don’t take it too seriously as I said ‘coffee was OKAY’.Interior was very trendy, bright light and warm I really like it. Tables and water, cream station were maintained nice and clean. I had lemon custard cream scone and banana nutella turnover. They both were so delicious!! (Of course pastries are from Wild flour which is one of the best bakery in Charleston lol)Staff was very friendly and helpful.Parking spot is 1 min walking distance, very understandable since the coffee shop is in downtown.
Great drip coffee and the bites were tasty. If you add an egg sandwich to your menu you will get 6 stars next time :)
Neat little coffee shop with the best mocha Ive ever had!
Coffee was really good! The staff were friendly and very helpful in making suggestions of what drinks were especially good.
Had a caramel latte, was very good. Cute atmosphere as well!
Currently staying at an Air B&B (Neptune - Urban style) where the hosts most graciously left a bag of Second State, Heavy Weight. Perfect blend of Charleston charm to kickstart the day! Cheers.
They had really good espresso! Staff was helpful, they were out of some things and made really good suggestions for different options and substitutions.
I really love this spot. It’s my favorite coffee spots in Charleston. They take their coffee seriously and I really appreciate that. I have visited here countless times since they first opened and never had less than a great experience.
This was our first time visiting South Carolina and we chose to stop here for breakfast bites and delicious coffee, before leaving. I ordered the Shakerato and my husband had an iced latte. Both were muy delicioso and the espresso pull was spot on! The bites were a bit basic, except for the blueberry scone. We would come back for that alone! Next time, Ill make sure to warm up the Nutella and banana turnover. The inside is spacious with large, bench style seating. There were a few people comfortably working on their laptops, while we were there. If youre looking for delicious coffee and a chill spot to take a breather, then I would recommend stopping in.
Really nice coffee place right near Charleston downtown. Cappuccino and cold brew were pretty good and their croissants were top notch, actually one of the best I had outside of Europe. This is by far one of the best coffee shops we came across in Charleston and we will definitely visit again and recommend this place to others!
I had a vanilla iced latte at Second State. It was fairly good. The espresso blend had a great flavor, and they used a house made vanilla syrup.
Delicious, robust coffee that will withstand even the biggest coffee critic’s standards
Solid vanilla latte. Would return.
My favorite coffee shop in Charleston. They just simply have the best coffees!
Smooth, creamy iced vanilla latte - one of the best i’ve had! Kind and quick service. Highly recommend.
A must try!!I tried a cappuccino at the gourmet doughnut (not so much. Over sugared, cant taste the doughnut) that was pretty horrible, over streamed and s throwaway for both my wife and I, not to mention even the Jada who consume everything, would not drink the cappuccino it finish their doughnuts.Back on point, 2nd State Coffee was the real deal! We buy fresh, grind and press Capps on a daily basis for our own personal survival 😎 Those of you who understand... will understand. 2 breve capps to go. Perfect press, smooth taste, perfect temp in the stream, sweet/no scaulding. Should have grabbed 4 of these. Road trip and 2 went different entirely too fast 😍☕.5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Look for the sweet smelling flowers on the corner and youll know you have discovered this hole in the wall. Skip the rest of them
Great coffee! We visited few places and this was the best coffee in town. They also had dope merch. We walked from The Battery there taking the scenic route. Dont be alarmed when the scenery changes its off the beaten path.
Absolutely love this shop. By far one of the greatest coffee shops in the Charleston area!Friendly staff, good environment, and wonderfully done coffee by experienced baristas!Would highly recommend if you’re looking for the best there is in Charleston!
Excellent vegan coconut muffin
The guys were super nice and helpful. Lavender latte was amazing.
First off, parking is iffy. Theres an alley beside coffee shop with a gravel drive. Tight turn, but if you can work your way in there, you can park there (I think free) for a few mins or hrs. Anyway, turn the corner and then find the beautiful building you see in all the pics. The shop is on the smaller side, and at the counter you will be greeted by a few people running the show. I ordered my wife the iced (light ice) lavender latè (it DOES have coffee in it) and I ordered the black coffee that they have in season. Taz... something. The guy at the counter said it was his favorite right now. Their black coffee is pour over so it has no bitterness. The guy whispered the wifi code to me like it was the secret of the century and was extremely helpful when ordering. A few mins later, out comes the latè and the coffee. The latè is not overly sweet, perfectly slight lavender flavor, but slightly too milky.. but the black coffee. The only way I can sum it up is 😍. Great atmosphere, GORGEOUS lighting, good music, and friendly staff. Would love to come back next time we are in Charleston.
Friendly and helpful barista, excellent pour overs [they roast their own beans], and fluffy, decadent quiche. The naturally processed and honey processed coffees were excellent!
Great location, bright, clean, friendly, I had a great Guatemalan pour over and Kate had an almond milk cappuccino. The music is very nice, good volume and blend. Our only nit was that Kates cappuccino was served in a to-go cup after specifically asking for a for-here cup, its minor but we shared a New Years resolution to not use disposable cups for our coffee, today is NYE so it was a bummer. We each made it through an entire year with less than ten disposable cups, and most were result of similar mistakes.
Our barista was extremely helpful, offered great recommendations, and our coffee was excellent. We tried the iced brown sugar latte and it was fantastic!
Delicious oatmilk lattes and friendly staff.
This place is an absolute hidden gem! It has the best coffee of all the places we tried in Charleston! Defiantly try the vanilla latte, lavender latte, honey latte or the brown sugar latte! combining lavender and honey was my favorite latte! The baked goods especially the chocolate chip cookie and blueberry and lemon scone were so good! This is a relaxing coffee shop that is great to hang out at for amazing coffee and delicious snacks! The staff are fast with making drinks and so friendly! They also have vegan and gluten free options! My husband and I loved it so much we went twice!! Defiantly it this on your list when visiting Charleston!
Yum! Great coffee and atmosphere. If I lived in the area then this might be my go-to work spot. I recommend the iced coffee black. My husband tried a ham and cheese croissant. He liked it quite a bit. We will visit for more coffee again on our next visit to Charleston.
Great vibes. Great coffee. Great service.
Ross and team are doing an awesome job of recognizing and finding great farms, roasting the bean for the perfect release and balance of sugars from the coffee bean, and the end result, both bean and espresso shot, are phenomenal.I was traveling through Charleston as a point of interest, and it is my M.O. to find and evaluate local coffee shops as I travel. Rarely do I find ones that are in the same caliber as Second State is.I have an extensive coffee background, and appreciate all the work it takes to make a great cup of coffee, and most shops I go to really do not deserve my effort of writing a review, but Ross most certainly is doing such great things with coffee, that if you are a true coffee connoisseur, Second State Coffee is a must try!
Great second-wave coffee place.
Looked cute, but didn’t end up ordering anything because the barista (also the person taking your order) wasn’t wearing a mask.
Great place to go after a morning walk around Colonial lake. Smooth brew, super hot, and an antique vibe. However, the barista was just a bit too loose with wearing a mask and for me, that’s no bueno!
My partner and I came in and ordered 2 coffees and a few pastries. When ordering, the man and woman working did not listen. I had ordered a hot drink and got it iced. My partner ordered a black coffee and he got milk in it.When we got our pasteries they were all thrown hap hazardly into the bag. Wouldnt have been a problem if we hadnt had 2 quieces at the bottom that were squished and now crumbled. When we told them about the wrong orders they rolled their eyes and sighed. When we asked for some extra sugar they signed and reluctantly gave it.Not sure what their issue is but we did not have a great experience.
My husband and I are from out of town and spent the morning here reading and drinking coffee. The barista was super friendly and hospitable and the brown sugar latte was truly the best latte I’ve ever had!
Great coffee and you can tell the employees know what they are doing! Inside is super bright and pretty—great for getting work done!
Best coffee shop in Charleston!! So nice and great coffee!!
Great coffee in a very cute location.
Ordered a cold brew and was instead served a hot coffee watered down with ice. They may have been busy but if they were out of cold brew they should’ve said something!Although I wouldn’t get their coffee again, the breakfast sandwich we ordered was good!
I gave this cafe 2 stars only because the coffee was not bad, however everything else is 0 stars. Service was horrible, I waited forever for my coffee and croissant while my boyfriend had already gotten his 15 min prior and had eaten it. They finally give me my coffee and I mention that I had a ham and cheese as well. He runs away and takes my croissant out of the toaster oven and brings it out half burned. I ended up throwing out my food because it was inedible. There are so many great places in Charleston, please dont waste your time here!
Everything is over the top spectacular - the service, the atmosphere, the food, the wine selection.
I grabbed coffee here with some colleagues in the morning on a weekday. I got there around 7:15 and was one of only two people. By 7:45, there was a lot more activity in the cafe, but it was still serene! I really love the aesthetic of Second State; the rustic wood and plants with clean lines makes it feel warm yet modern. Theres a decent amount of seating for a smaller space but without making the cafe feel crowded.
Had a good hazelnut latte
Day 1 iced brown sugar latte day 2 iced lavender latte. loved this little coffee shop in charleston sc.
We really enjoyed our experience here. There was only one staff member there on morning of 1/9/2020 upon opening and it was extremely busy but he did a really really good job accommodating the rush by himself. Hats off to the excellent coffee and service.
Best shop in town! Friendly staff, great coffee, and ideal atmosphere to read or work. Barista even remembered my drink after only being in once before :)
Great atmosphere, better coffee. I enjoyed their single origin pour over several times during weekend trip.
I walked in here today and there were like 30 people sitting around without masks on. Its a small space and I actually felt unsafe. Obviously no covid rules here.
Coffees tasted good but you dont get the latte art like in the pictures. Otherwise the shots pulled were quality 👌
Service was friendly. The chai tea wasnt great just ok.
This place has so much potential! It has the best lavender latte (hot or iced) that I’ve found in this area. And it’s a great space! But the upkeep on the place is awful and it’s just dirty. It’s a small place so would be easy to keep clean but there is obviously no effort nor excuse.
Great service. Terrific coffee.
My favorite coffee shop. The selection of tea was fantastic. The cold brew was so delicious. The service was excellent and environment was warm. The staff was friendly and respectful. I would highly recommend them.
I live in Washington state where theres an abundance of quality coffee shops. (Not you, Starbucks). I was recommended to go to Second State by a nurse here on Charleston and she suggested this particular one on Beaufaint. I got a triple shot half sweet mocha and was very impressed! The espresso wasnt burned and it felt like a good extraction. The house-made chocolate sauce was very good. I think the full sweet would be way too sweet judging from how sweet the half sweet was. But judging from how much sugar people drink in their tea here, maybe thats just normal lol.
Second State Coffee was precisely the coffee experience I was anticipating. It is a quaint and unpresumptious coffee house with a very relaxing atmosphere. I found it while strolling the back streets of Charleston. The coffee is prepared as I would imagine would be at an Italian cafe. Not your typical chain coffee experience. I will definitely return every morning I am here!
What can you say? When a place knocks it’s out of the park, a simple “thank you” seems inadequate. Fantastic cappuccino and pastry. No better way to start the day. Loved it!
Nice coffee shop atmosphere, but kind of hard to find parking. Coffee was good, but not great.
This place is okay. It doesnt offer food other than some pastries and they mainly focus on the coffee and the chocolate they have. It seems a bit gimmicky when they do the pour-over coffee and the service isnt fast. The interior is nice, its dog friendly, and they have a variety of seating for people who are alone or with a group. Good bathroom thats unisex. Its not exactly near anything and the facade didnt make me notice the place as I walked by. It actually is in an odd location (maybe on purpose? Part of the hipster appeal?) and I walked by it the first time I was looking for it.Basically for hipsters who want an experience over someone looking for a good cafe seems to the tilt of this place.
We were visiting Charleston for a weekend and decided to track down this place after having their amazing coffee at another restaurant in town. Their espresso definitely deserves five stars. This is more of a local coffee and work spot for college kids though, not for visitors and tourists. Five star coffee and three star service averages to four stars.
