Delicious coffee. I love to brunch here because they have an actual coffee shop too so you can get real espresso and lattes. The eggs Benedict are delicious and it’s located in a very cute part of south end. Highly recommend a stop here. Only thing to caution you about: the biscuits are pretty unique and definitely not my favorite. They tasted a little stale and were difficult to cut through or chew. Everything else I loved.
This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Boston and has been a neighborhood favorite since they first opened. In addition to serving some of the best coffee you can buy, they have plenty of sweets and treats. The menu has grown to include about a dozen sandwiches and lunch options which are convenient to eat at the cafe or to grab-n-go.The restaurant, which is open for dinner and brunch is a good place to meet up with a friend or another couple For dinner, Im partial to the burger which is consistently good. Weekend brunches at The Buttery tend to book quickly so definitely make a reservation if you go.
The buttery is my favorite place in Boston. Had a lovely brunch outside last weekend with great service. Highly suggest the pastry basket!
This place is a gem, and heres why:Almond croissants to die for!!!I also had a breakfast burrito for my lunch - so I am very happy that I could get anything on the menu, even after breakfast. It was prepared with care and was delicious. The wait was negligible with counter service. I also had an iced chai latte and had choices about the type of product in it: milk, oat or almond. It was also delicious.I ordered and ate inside and enjoyed that the indoor tables were separate from the area for ordering, grab and go, and pick up.Additionally, there is a lovely bench outside to wait for your friends to arrive and there were many other outdoor table available for people to enjoy their goods. Finally, excellent customer experience, with kind, inviting people that were happy to assist me and very courteous.
First off, the lady that was taking our order was not very helpful or friendly at all. The online menu was a bit hard to found on their website, she was making a face that she was annoyed me trying to look for it. She informed me that it would take some time for the food to be ready.40 minutes after I placed the order I went to the counter to see what was happening there. Turned out our food was ready and was just getting cold out there. I heard only - “sorry, we got backed up” from the same employee. And now look at the potatoes that I got.Frustrating experience. Inefficient service.
Honestly just not the greatest dining experience all around. The service was extremely slow, it took us ages to even get asked for our drink orders which then took an additional 25 minutes to even come out and all we ordered was 2 iced coffees. Staff wasn’t very friendly and seemed very all over the place. Cute area but there are definitely places around the corner with much better service
This is the place to have dinner in Boston! Fantastic food and service.Run, do not walk, to dine here...every meal is perfection. Great bakery on site! Just go and enjoy!
Booked on my way to Boston and realized we wouldn’t make it and they charged me $25 a person for canceling OVER 3 HOURS before the reservation when I had booked it within that hour. Super rude service said we were gonna get gift cards but I said we weren’t from there so why would we need them?
Coffee, scones, biscuit breakfast sandwich are my go to. Early morning right after they open, lovely time to go in. They’ve expanded lots of outdoor seating. Toasts are awesome, just check before ordering if you have a nut allergy, some of them do have nuts.
Staff in the cafe was extremely rude. Didn’t even acknowledge us waiting. The avocado toast was not toasted or seasoned. Was very disappointed. Only nice thing was a waiter named Angel who was super kind to us. Don’t think I will be returning with the family.
Latte & almond croissant were great! The actual food was average- will only stop here in the future for coffee.
We made reservations for my birthday and were put in the cozy (suffocatingly warm and small) basement where I spent my dinner watching a mouse run around the window ledge living his best little life. The food was pretty good, the service was mostly alright, although part of my order was missing. I genuinely dont get the hype.
Great service, great offerings. Coffee, breakfast sandwiches, pastries, baked items, and more
Food was very good, fresh. The staff are professional and courteous which is appreciated especially during the Brunch rush when every white girl is annoying the staff asking “how much longer for a table?” Every five minutes. The host was attentive and informative, and our waitress was very patient with us. Everything on the menu looked so good so it took us a minute to order. Ambience is calm and relaxed. The restaurant part is small, but it keeps the noise level down. Will definitely be back.
This review only concerns their hot teas (5 stars for food and coffee beverages)1. Very poor, unflavorful tea choices for a supposedly upscale, sophisticated, yuppified, urbane locale2. Asked for a green tea, given a black tea (they were not busy)3. 30 min after purchase tea was still boiling, painfully hot, had to eventually throw away because 10 min after that could still barely sip the unprofessional hot beverage (different teas should be steeped to different temperatures... this was tea murder), and break was over...:(Nice try South End Buttery
In Boston for a day so I had no idea where to eat. Wasnt hard to find, and there was a parking space for our rental. I had to breakfast burrito which was amazing also got one chocolate chip and one adult meal cookie. They were over the top delicious! We happened on a good one here. The burrito was really big, and I had a hard time finishing it.
Good Pastries, definitely good coffee, super chill if you find a seat outside.! Some stuff could use retrain!
If you care about good/decent service, just avoid this place.
Brunch was excellent here! The basement dining area was comfortable and intimate, but I would highly recommend getting a reservation since the space is smaller than most. We started off with mimosas (chose from Orange, Blood orange, or Grapefruit) and then had their Buttery Bakery Basket (blueberry scones are a must-have)!- The Breakfast Sandwich: arugula lightens each bite of fried egg all in the brioche bun and the home fries are crisp, halved fingerling potatoes 👌🏿- Western Omelet: greens made this omelet fresh!
I ordered steak and eggs for brunch and the cut of the steak was horrible. Veins running through the middle of the piece not allowing me to cut into it and I could only try to chew around it. Eggs were cooked correctly at least but with that cut of the steak it was not worth the price. Not a pleasant eating experience so although I’ve enjoyed some delicious treats and meals from here I had to give this a 3.
Very, very tasty bite to eat. Just a bit slow. Expect 15-20 mins during lunch hour.
Tucked in off a main artery, South End Buttery is nestled halfway up on the corner of Clarendon & Gray. Offering fuller meal options than other nearby cafes, what they lack in quantity, they make up in quality. Quiches, cold salads, meatloaf, & fish dishes are a few of filling eats to choose from.I went in to satisfy my sweet tooth. Although baked off the premises, I was told by the friendly staff that cupcakes, and cookies are delivered fresh daily...and I was not disappointed. For a midweek afternoon, close to the end of the workday, the place was practically empty. However, I think it was due to the prevalence of an abundance of cafe and bar type places rather than the store itself. All the better, to have a great place to go to and avoid a crowd.
It was fine, had coffee which was fine, the sandwiches were way overpriced, way way overpriced things all over the menu, if you can deal with that in your world then I understand. But otherwise it is so expensive wouldnt bother...
Food is usually fine, but got really bad food poisoning from the chicken salad here a few days ago.
Loved the food but for me it was too noisy. But still a great place.
Great food. Their pastries are delicious. The downstairs dining area is really lovely, with nice garden windows.
I was really excited to order, i went in person a few days ago the customer service was kinda bad. long wait, and not very nice staff. the food was ok. i ordered today through doordash and pork was added to my meal. I am muslim and don’t eat pork and when i called they said so sorry and hung up on me. if u are blk or poc don’t recommend
The experience overall was great but the food quality has change after covid. Great service but the taste was not the same anymore.
My wife and I ordered from their special Valentines Day menu and i just wanted to give kudos to their staff and management. Seems their kitchen was inundated with orders but they contacted us and explained the situation ahead of time and went above and beyond to make sure we got our food in time for dinner with some extras thrown in. Really very impressed with the customer service on this front. And the food was delicious of course. The lava cake and the braised short rib were a huge hit.During non-pandemic times, I work nearby and have been going here for years. They have a turkey cheddar sandwich that’s a favorite among my coworkers and their chocolate chip cookie is one of the best around.
Really cute atmosphere, very neighborhood like and good food/baked goods. The staff are awful, and food always comes out really slow. Ordering always feels hard and if you have any questions, forget it.
Rating for their coffee - first the coffee was lukewarm, then it was burnt and bitter. The banana walnut muffin was also burnt on top. Stars are for the location and ambience.
Fairly delicious but somewhat disorganized. Great coffee and atmosphere in any case.
Great place for that special treat you want to get.
Nice Sandwiches, good coffee and pastries. Prices are reasonable too. They have a few sitting spots in the back room, one of few places that you can dine in during the pandemic in the South End. A few vegetarian options as well. Will go again.
Great food and service. If you can sit outside and far from the restaurant as you can gaze at the church nearby
Fantastic Sunday brunch spot. Be sure to make reservations in advance and leave time for parking. We had the buttery basket as a starter which was a mixture of tasty muffins, scones and other tasty types of bread. We had the huevos rancheros and veggie eggs benedict and both were solid options. The home fries were exceptionally well done. The service was courteous and fast, we really enjoyed the meal.
Our favorite breakfast spot in Boston. Coffee, egg dishes are both great, but that almond croissant - AMAZING!
So cozy downstairs its deceiving from outside. Needs a few more menu choices. Had the steak though and it was great
We stopped here around noon on a Friday. It was pretty busy but they moved pretty quickly in getting our food and coffees. Unfortunately, the food and coffee was average at best; very unremarkable. I had the avocado toast and a vanilla latte. The toast was mediocre and, somehow, they managed to serve a mediocre coffee too. My daughter had the breakfast burrito and said it was very bland too. She ordered an iced vanilla coffee and it came with chunky white stuff floating around; the taste of the coffee was mediocre too. Overall, I would skip this place and try somewhere else. There are too many other great options in the area to settle for mediocre.
I like their ham&cheese crossant and their iced teas. They also have a bunch of LGBT+ Pride flags hanging which is awesome
Good food and coffee, good service, nice neighborhood feeling, aka, could be the place youd go to often if you live nearby.
Ordered a latte, it came spilled all over the cup, asked for it to be changed, and it came spilled again... Tasted it, it tasted of old grinds as if the espresso machine was not cleaned. The milk was not steamed properly either. The ricotta fritters with nutella were good (but isn’t anything, when it’s coated in nutella). Would not reccomended the french toast, it was really off.Might be because it’s a sunday. Had coffee here on Friday and it was much better.
Absolutely the best pastries and parfaits. Fresh food and charming ambiance!
Great place for brunch! Wasnt that busy when we went but space for seating could be an issue during busier hours. We made reservations the day before and sat at a large table near the bar. The staff was courteous and extremely accommodating when we had a party that was a bit larger than expected. Our server was also very responsive. I ordered the Steak and Eggs. Overall, the dish was pretty good. My only gripe would be the steak. While done medium rare (how I like it), too much of the surface of the steak was burned so it was really bitter.
Yum! Friendly staff and delicious brunch food to go! We placed our order online which was the way to go for sure. Order early for quick service! Convenient pick up location in their Cafe, though parking is tough. Most people were double parking which I guess is the Boston way! They are terrific about accommodating allergies and special requests. They made a perfect medium egg which turns out is something most places cant manage to do! And those hash brown potatoes are worth the trip alone!!! The pastries in the case looked delicious and had I known how good they looked, probably would have ordered one. Since we had paid online and I just ran in to grab our order, I didnt get anything, but I think I should have! Enjoy!
Excellent eggs benedict! Will definitely be back for a dinner service. Everything was top notch during a late Easter brunch.
Gorgeous cashier very good crossaint
Great little cafe spot in boston
Delicious, has the brunch staples plus some interesting combinations. Something for everyone.
Im from Connecticut stopping by for PAX, I was with a group of 4 others and we decided to stop and eat breakfast here. I got the breakfast burrito with no sour cream, I wish I got no tomatoes too, but whatever. My friends got the salmon bagels they said it was really good. The only down thing about this place is the parking and its small, but its still a really good place to eat at.
We went for brunch and wanted to sit outside. We were told that all of the tables were taken though most were empty. We asked the hostess if she could say when a table would open and she told us to go to Open Table to see. When asked again she said she did know and that we had to go to Open Table. Horrible service. She gave no other advice or help.We then went to their take out side and they were very nice and helpful. We ordered, sat outside, they brought us our food, which was delicious.Take out side gets 5 stars. Restaurant side with unhelpful hostess gets no stars. Owners should really monitor and train their help. Customer Service is key.
Love this little place. Great place to pick up treats. Lots of dogs hang out here too. I do feel bad for the workers because it is a small place and despite covid the customers try to go in when they shouldnt. The cashier had to keep telling people to please wait outside because there were too many people in the store.
Fabulous neighborhood coffee shop and bakery. We have been coming here for years. The staff is always friendly. Please visit them during this difficult time for small business in the South End!
The food, atmosphere and coffee were all amazing!
Great snacks and cute atmosphere. Will be back soon to try dinner!
Great food, great service! highly recommend
First, the table was dirty, i had to ask the hostess to clean up the table. the server was overwhelmed with two 8 tops however, this negatively affected the service. there were also many aspects that needed to be adjusted (the meat was undercooked, but also the food wasn’t really good). Lastly, the vibes were not there, we wish we hadn’t gone.
Great little local spot in cute and quaint part of Boston
Good coffee and pastry paired with a lovely outdoor seating area.
We had an amazing night at the Buttery! The food was amazing. So glad Bites of Boston food tours introduced us to them. Shea and Shirley were amazing servers and so thoughtful for our friends bachelorette. Cant wait to come back!!
Tasty pastries & good coffee
Very cute little cafe! Dog friendly and has an awesome, comfy seating area in the back!
Delicious!! Service can improve a little. But one of my favorite places in Boston
Decent meatloaf.. I dont understand all the hype..
Wonderful food, relaxed setting
It’s a nice cafe, and the food was delicious. The price was crazy high, even for the South End. A small breakfast sandwich with swapping bacon for avocado was almost $11. Service was pretty slow, and they messed up an order ahead of me in multiple ways. Might have just been a bad day, but overall I docked a couple stars for price and service.
Nice little place to get a healthy breakfast or lunch. The staff are friendly and social (they gave great recommendations for my first time eating there).
I enjoyed the coffee.
They offer quality coffee and pastry is exciting.
Their mushroom baguette was pretty awesome! Will definitely be back when in Boston. Thank you for the great food!
Bagels were ok but the workers are rude and whoever drives the company car has a serious case of road rage.
Love the Buttery, even when restricted to takeout! I picked up their hanger steak with asparagus last night and it was all cooked beautifully. Thoughtful food and always friendly service.
Great neighborhood joint for any meal. Probably best burger in the south end. Fantastic brunch as well. The restaurant has a very cozy interior. Menu items are reasonably priced as well. The cafe is great for coffee/tea and snacks.
The baked good and prepared foods alike are wonderful. My only complaint would be the long slow lines on Sat morning. If you can get past that you will have a great cup of coffee and something to eat.*****UPDATE......THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING OPEN DURING THIS VIRUS SHUT DOWNS AND OPERATING WITH SUCH CLASS AND HOLDING TO THE SOCIAL DISTANCING RULES!!!!!******
