This place is the real deal. I’ve been going to Peretti for the last 12 years and I have never wanted to go anywhere else for my tobacco needs except maybe Cuba. Steve the owner is the man and was very nice when he helped me. I needed to buy a bunch of cigars for my brother’s bachelor party. After giving him the details, he knew exactly what I was looking and what my party was looking for. Great selection of cigars, great prices, and most importantly, GREAT PEOPLE! Thanks Steve! I’ll be back for more, because the wedding is next month and I’m on cigar duty again - probably because Steve made me look good and I didn’t have to break the bank!
Great place... Perfect for pipe tobacco, pipes, and cigars.I love that the people who work there have knowledge and experience to share.
Fantastic little cigar shop. They have a great selection of AF, Tatuaje, and Aladino cigars + cutting and lighting accessories. The clerk was super friendly and helpful for finding everything I needed.
A Boston staple….. and a must visit if you’re a cigar smoker or just wanna buy gifts for friends. Staff are super helpful in selecting what you’re looking for. Very highly recommended 👍👍
Walked in and was greeted by 2 gentlemen who seemed genuinely interested in who I was and how they could help me. Ended up buying my first Castello from this old world establishment. Thanks again lj Peretti
Been coming here for years. Huge selection of cigars and great customer service. Good prices.
Awesome customer service and great atmosphere. Shop people care about customer satisfaction.
Good selection of cigars at a fair price
I am not an avid customer but when I do frequent this establishment I am helped out very quickly by the store clerk.. he is not quick with joke but he makes sure I have matches for a light of my smoke... great place quality cigars and service
Good selection of cigars at good prices
Best spot in the city
Quintessential smoke shop. Great variety of Cigars, Pipe Tabacco blends and all the associated necessaries.
I went in completely new and ignorant, the gentlemen working were extremely helpful and kind, asking thoughtful and polite questions, and didnt make me feel dumb for being new at all. They set me up with a couple simple accessories for free, too.Another time, I made an online order. They were out of stock of one component of the order, they replaced it with an upgrade at no charge and emailed me a heads-up.The place is incredible to visit, the staff are great to work with, their products are top notch. I strongly endorse.
I feel so very fortunate to be a Bostonian and being able to go to Peretti anytime I would like. Best pipe tobaccos. I love Smiths Own. A step back in time when smokers were not second class citizens. Word.
I have been there a few times and every time the folks (even other customers) are always friendly and helpful. I am not new to pipes or cigars, but I do not have half the knowledge of any of the folks working here. They have a good selection of good cigars. They blend the own pipe tobacco, several I have tried and like them all. In fact if you know pipe smokers in the area it is likely they will have some. They also have hundreds of pipes ranging from beginner to very nice.As for the old guy as grouchy as he may look, if you use a little humor it is not hard to get a smile out of him.
Staff was extremely helpful.
Great customer service I went in to get a couple of cigars and walked out with a great experience as always. They have definitely earned my loyalty and hopefully they can still be around for another 150 years.
I came to this tobacconist looking for an upgrade to a new pipe tobacco as a beginner. The gentlemen running the shop were friendly and good natured and gave me some recommendations based on some basic descriptions of my knowledge. My impression is these gents like tobacco and like people who are their definition of it. Serious about their trade and wanting an establishment about serious people who enjoy what they come in for. I left happy feeling I had been made appropriate recommendations for my level of knowledge.Certainly come ready to articulate what you want, it wouldn’t hurt to review their website before coming, very informative.
This is an excellent place. They have everything you can think of. The staff is professional and they are very nice. The prices for everything are excellent.
Great place. Nick was a wealth of information and took the time to educate me on the different types of tobacco. This pace is incredible when compared to the modern day shops that leave you depressed because of the lack of class.
What a great place! Ive been to more cigar shops than I can count, all across the US. Youll occasionally find a larger selection, but thats a rarity. Their selection of pipes and pipe tobacco is amazing. Ive honestly never seen a place quite like this. The authentic decor, paired with the great location, makes this a must see for cigar and pipe lovers.
Guy started quoting Cool Hand Luke and hung up on me. Twice. For a 75 year old man, youd think hed have better manners and customer service skills.Ive been going there for a decade and theyve always been prefessional in the past, but what the ef!? Who does that?Update: I appreciate the response and will say that, overall, Im still a big fan of the shop and would like to see it stick around for years to come.
They have everything you are looking for!Reasonable prices & Quality!
Terrific tobacco shop! It has a sense of yesteryear, the delightful smell you expect, and an extremely helpful staff. I went in as a proud new pipe owner who didn’t know anything. The gentleman suggested a good tobacco to start with, set me up with the accessories I needed, and gave me a lesson in how to pack the pipe and get started enjoying it. I’ll definitely be back!
The very best cigar and tobacco shop in the Boston area. I travel from NH to go there just because they have best selections I have ever seen. And they take great care of their tobaccos.
A must if you love cigars, pipes, or any fine tobacco. They have an amazing assortment on the floor and in the back where you cant see. Ask for a recommendation based on what you like and they have everything.Their pipe tobacco is phenomenal. They stock prepacked leaf, but where they really shine is their own blends. So many to choose from and they do not disappoint.Whenever I drove through I was sure to stop. Now that I work within walking distance I feel spoiled.
The staff are extremely personable, knowledgeable, and genuine. This isnt your typical smoke shop with bongs, ecigs, oils, and weed stuff. Its a legit tobacco store with a wide array of pipe tobacco, cigars, pipes and everything else youd need to enjoy a smoke. Can be a bit pricey but youre paying for the exceptional service and the variety of tobacco. Try the 47 blend it the coffee pipe tobacco and if youre into cigars the drew estate Java or the mint chocolate, both are really good!
EMPLOYEE NOT WEARING MASK.I started to go in, but stopped short when I saw an older gentleman through the window, who seemed to be the boss, and one of the patrons, clearly following his lead, were NOT WEARING MASKS right in the midst of a spike in COVID-19 cases. This comes during a time when the governor is considering rolling back restrictions on businesses. If youre not going to wear a mask and follow guidelines, then you are going to lose sales and forfeit customers.Needless to say, I will never go back to this place - virus or no virus. It disrespectful an utter disregard for human health.
Dont understand all the bad reviews, I had a great experience. They are always busy but they made time to suggest several great Partagas cigars. Bought a few and was very happy with price and especially the quality. Very well kept and moist. Better than online stores any day. Will definitely visit again when back in Boston.
Best selection Ive seen. Very helpful staff. Great atmosphere.
As many people mentioned, the staff is rude, but as long as I didn’t smell something fishy I didn’t care, this is Boston after all. However, I have been buying the same cigar box of 6 twice a week for more than 3months. And the pricing I get is different every single time, it is like the stock market and they don’t justify it. I then realized that I was paying twice as much as I should’ve, so that was it, will never go there again. Too bad such a nice place is getting ruined by the gentlemen running it.Response to owner: There is a difference between price correction and between paying 10$, 11$, 12.4$ 10.5$, 13.5$ for the same item at different times... this is not a price correction. But anyway, I wish you all the best and hope that one day, I will understand business as good as you do, specially the customer retention side. All the best !
Honestly just left here and I know Ive been treated better here. Its usually great but this old man with the old man marks on his head was rude and fussy for no reason. In a time when most shops like this are closed and with pressure from the federal government to regulate and close places like this, Im pretty sure its a good idea to keep customers that come here a good amount and buy boxes or a handful of sticks every visit. I like the younger guy and some of the other older guys here but this was my first time with this guy. The selection is great and the prices are higher but I wanted to support the local B and M. Well, unless I desperately need to and conveniently in the area, Ill be going to pleasant smoke shop in Malden even more from now on.
Fantastic store. Best burley pipe tobacco blends in the country. If you are a pipe smoker, do yourself a favor and get some 333 and Cuban mixture.
The very best place to purchase high quality tobacco products within the entire City of Boston.
A bastion of old world values! The staff may seem like a bunch of curmudgeonly old men. But. When they start helping its service in the true sense of the word. This is pretty much the only place I will get pipe tobacco from.Fantastic I hope they are around for a long long time!
Nate was very kind and helpful with my questions, great place!
This place is a time capsule in a good way. Prices are reasonable and the house blends are unique (one of five blend masters in the country!) Cigars are everywhere and the amount of pipe is mind boggling. The staff is patient and very helpful.I will continue to go to Perettis for as long as Im in Boston!
Nice selection, knowledgeable staff, and good prices
There is a younger guy who works there who has been helpful and courteous each time I have visited, but with the other employees, the customer service is either fine or unpleasant depending on the day.I had an odd experience recently when I called to ask about a specific cigar. The person on the phone said that they had been out of stock for months (I had seen what I was calling about in the store the prior week) and when I stopped by later that day, saw what I was looking for right next to the register. Thats the second time this exact same things has happened. This place has a lot of potential, but the customer service interactions have been strange.
Great selection of cigars at decent prices. I agree that it is hit or miss with customer service. The younger guy (havent seen him in a while) is really helpful. I have never had a good experience with the short, thin, older guy, but whatever - that was what it was like in Boston back in the day. Even if there is nobody else in the store, he acts as if you are a nuisance to him. If you see him, dont try to interact - buy what you need and leave it at that!
Its like stepping into 1900s. The gentleman in the store is amazing. Super knowledgeable and the product are amazing too.
Great cigars and better service. The first time I went here I was fresh off work on a busy day and I was dirty and looked like a mad man and those guys were nothing but helpful to a brother lol they got a customer for life with me.
Great cigar selection, great selection in general for anything tabacco related really.I used to think that the guys working there had attitude, and then I thought maybe they were just really moody -- and now after going there for years I just think that theyre simply a great bunch of gentlemen! Definitely worth checking out!
Everything a traditional pipe/tobacco store should be. They have everything and know their trade. When you take the time to talk to them you really find out how knowledgeable they are. Superb. They haven’t been there for so long for nothing!
Decent selection but most cigars were overpriced and the customer service needs improvement. Like other reviews here, its true that the staff was condescending and did not care whether you bought a cigar or not. When I asked for an Acid cigar the guy said We dont sell many flavored cigars. Its not our TYPE of clientele. and then walked away from me. They also dont like making product recommendations. It was a beautiful today for a smoke and I was going to buy a few cigars but I didnt want to reward bad service so I bought a $2 cigar and left. I will never go back to this store. General rule for brick and mortar retailers: If you cant compete on price, you better have amazing customer service.
Too many whiners reviewing this place. The staff is not rude, but they are a bit crusty, and can be curt. The selection is very good and the prices in line with what I find in Boston. If you take the time to talk with the staff, you will find they are helpful and informative. I have seen them spend an inordinate amount of time patiently helping clueless customers. If you really know what you want, you will do fine. If you do not know what you want and admit it, you will be treated courteously. If you pretend to know what you want and have no clue, they will push back to get you to explain what you mean. L J Peretti is not Starbucks - it is an old style tobacco shop with real personality, not that bulk processed servility some people seem to want. Savor it.
One of the best cigar store where Ive visited. TWO old mans are so kind, knowledgeable and the best part of this store is they have so many discontinued cigars. Especially, if you looking for the rare Davidoff, they might have one. GO visit there !
Just visited the shoppe for the first time....well, I did not meet anyone rude in there, people were cordial and willing to help-and that they did well! Bill was great, the other gent was little on the momentary ruff edge, but after exchanging few words things were good......overall great experience, great service and I will order the 432 tobacco mixture that Bill suggested for long time, its one of the best I have tried for awhile....Thanks!!!!!
Extremely rude old man, watch out for him! dont know he was the staff or the owner, and i dont even understand why the shop lasted for so long with this kind of service. Such a nice place ruined by this guy, what a shame..P/s: the younger guy was nice
Amazing selection and friendly service. Cant wait to visit again the next time we visit Boston.
Amazing place! The only one where Ive told what Ive liked and got recommendations that were just as awesome.
Great amazingly old shop! Bought my first briar pipe at LJ Peretti Co..!! Sadly lost it recently here in Lincoln, NE. Hopefully will be able to locate one of very similar features and quality soon. SF..!!
Great selection of Pipes and Tobacco.Very helpful and friendly staff. Also carrier of Cigars and cigarettes.A worthwhile stop if your in the area.
Visit here whenever Im looking for cigars. Great selections at great prices. Best shop Ive shop in 2 different states. Highly recommend.
ONE of the oldest cigar shops in America. Very good selection, great prices, and knowledgeable staff. Ill return on my next trip. Conviently located on Boston Common.
The best tobacconist in Boston. Hands down
This is an incredible place; one of the last real tobacco stores in the country. I believe it is the oldest established too.The owner, Steve, is incredibly nice, and his staff is knee deep in tobacco history and knowledge. You wouldnt believe the famous clients from this place.Like the waitress who tells you to, Sit down and Order...et cetera, you will find one lovable curmudgeon who always makes me laugh. I never know when he has had a bad day, and will scoff at my purchase, nor when he will show me a sign of brotherhood for the Sotweed Factor. Anyway, you have to go in aware of the vagaries of selling to the public. It aint easy dealing with Me, 500 times a day for decades!!!Sometimes I just want to run out of the store in terror, but curmudgeon or not, this guy has been a fixture at the store for decades. He knows his stuff and is unimpressed by your Vuitton briefcase, Gucci suit, or Rolex watch. Sort of a character out of Shakespere. My advice: Go in, buy something, Kibbutz, and enjoy the atmosphere. This shop is the real deal; characters and all. Once again, this is a historic place. Steve has the best tobacco store Ive ever smoked in; cry babies need not apply... Check out the statue in front!!!
As others have mentioned, the staff is extremely rude and unwelcoming. I inquired about some harder to find cigars and associates exact response was I dont know your face, so you arent getting those cigars, thats fine you wont see my face ever again.
Being new to the cigar scene the staff was very accommodating. Did not rush me and explained all the cigars I had interest in and gave recommendations.
Great selection of cigars, pipes, and accessories. The prices are reasonable considering the location and the owners/staff were personable and more than helpful.
These guys will sell you the smoke but they wont blow any up your A$$ so if you cant take not being treated like youre special then go somewhere else.To be honest the guy I dealt with WAS rude... But it didnt really bother me. Being born and raised in Boston it just seemed like he was treating me like any other random guy off the street.
Easily the best pipe & cigar shop in the north east, and arguably the best in the country; certainly one of the oldest. This shop is been around, and continuously open in downtown Boston since the mid 19th century! And it’s no surprise! They aren’t just a tobacco shop, they are also a tobacconist/blender. They have literally hundreds of their own blends, that they blend in a house of pipe tobacco’s. Their tobacco’s are known worldwide and are reviewed on the top pipe tobacco sites in the world.I consider myself a person who likes to support local businesses, but, if I can’t find quality goods, I’ll look online. I know that will never be an issue with any tobacco products. It will only be the case if I move out of Boston, in that case I’ll just order directly from them. They don’t sell anything else, no boardgames, no men’s grooming products, no souvenirs or Chachkes, just tobacco products, the best tobacco products, all tobacco products, and they’re doing it right.Whether you’re looking for and Ashton VSG, Costello pipe, Dunhill tobacco products, snuff, etc. they’ll have it, and plenty more you haven’t heard of. Plus, no matter how much of a seasoned veteran you are, don’t be afraid to ask, there is a wealth of knowledge there, a wealth that they are happy to share; you may even find your new favorite blend/brand.The prices are comparable and inline with online competitors, in fact, even better considering the wealth of knowledge & service that you will get. They have an in-house pipe maker, Nick Johnson, he has beautiful pipes he makes of 125-year-old and 75-year-old Briar; I just got one yesterday: beautiful grain, and it smokes sweet and cool. I’m smoking one of their in-house blends “Tashkent” an English/oriental blend out of a Nick Johnson pipe right now, and that spurred me to write this post. They don’t need me to write this post, because everything I said is well known by the local pipe and cigar scene. These days quality brick and mortar is in any niche, especially places that are tobacconists, are very rare, but this place is always booming. So I’m not even writing this review necessarily for them, I’m writing it as a service to anyone new to the Boston area, On vacation, or looking to pick up the hobby of pipe smoking.I am primarily a pipe smoker, but everything I said applies to their selection of cigars and all other tobacco products they sell.Cheers!
I have never been to the shop. Granted, a lot of people are whiners and expect preferential treatment. They irritate me as well. But SO many complaints about the service in this shop, would indicate that there is some sort of problem with the attitude of the employees. The next time I am in Boston, I expect to make a point of visiting the shop to see for myself. I will be meek as a lamb and turn into a roaring lion, if this is true.
Great service. The guys know pipes & cigars. Most of the pipe tobacco is blended on site. Too cool.
Absolutely love this tobacco shop! When Im in Boston I always stop and drop over $50!
The guys who work here are old-fashioned, but they know their stuff if you can ask good questions and the selection is quite good.
Went there looking for special cigarettes. Export A, and Dunhill International. They had them. Very reasonable prices.
Excellent selection and a big friendly dog.
Its a great shop to find artisan tobacco and pipes to smok it with
What people need to understand is the crazy number of absolute numbskulls that visit the place. If you were inundated with the superfluous kinds of nutty they are, you would react the same way.Its a human defense mechanism against total stupidity. And man, oh, man some people are just off the wall in the nuts department. After working here for close to tens years, I agree with the reviews that say people need to grow a set.Working at any establishment in Boston you actually grow an internal BS analyzer after a certain amount of time.It keeps you sane.At Perettis, if you know what you want, ask.If you dont, tell them that and they will send you out with better than you went in asking for.LJP is a hallowed institution that I hope will go on forever.Be honest with them and they will take care of the rest.Promise.Ask for Charlie or Bill and tell them Michael sent you.You will be glad you made the effort to get there.I gave this 5 stars but Google cut it to 3.6? Huh?
I like the look of the shop. What i didnt like is the disgusted look on the old guys face while he attended me. It seemed he had something against me so after my purchase I hung back to see if he was like this to everyone, but nope it was just me.
If youre looking for a Tobacconist and/or tobacco shop, you found it, look no further; this is arguably the best tobacco shop in the country; and that isnt just my opinion, they have won countless awards and are know for their quality products internationally.IGNORE ALL the negative reviews; they are clearly MADS UP by trolls who hate tobacco.Im a daily pipe smoker, Im 36 and have been smoking a pipe for about 7 years consistently. Prior I was a weekend cigar smoker since I was 18 (and I did smoke cigarettes for well over 10 years till my late 20s). That being said, Ive been to many brick and mortar tobacco shops over the years. All of the ones in the Boston & greater Boston area, and I always check one out when I travel. This shop is an outlier in that it is exceptional in every way! Most importantly they have amazing customer service! You dont feel like a customer, you feel like a friend, hanging out in a community center for tobacco. They aren’t just a tobacco shop selling pipes, cigars and tobacco in pouches and tins, as they do that and more. They are a tobacconist, as they blend their own tobacco! They have been doing so for over 150 years, and to my understanding are the second oldest tobacco shop in the United States. It is by no mistake they are still in business after all these years, they have loyal customers and are gaining new loyal customers on a daily basis because they provide the most exceptional service! In 2019 you would expect a tobacco shop to be losing customers, this is the opposite with Perrettis. You can sample any tobacco they make/blend. I always pack a bowl or two every visit of a tobacco I havent tried, Ill then shoot the breeze with locals and employees. Its a friendly and welcoming atmosphere! They have over 100 blends of their own pipe tobacco, blended right there in the back room: cavendish blends, Burley (American) blends, & English Blends. And this doesn’t even include the tin tobaccos, huge selection of cigars, snuff and all other tobacco products. If you are a beginner, they got you covered with And affordable set up of pipe/tobacco. If you’ve been smoking for a long time you can also find the finest pipes and the finest tobacco blends prices to suit any budget! They have a huge selection of anything tobacco and tobacco accessories such as pouches, traveling cases, humidors and so much more. One of the things that I love is they have so much cool brand new backstock. They have brand new tobacco pouches from the 1960s, pipes that have been out of production for 40+ years, brand new antique humidors and that is on top of all the new product of this year/season. The store is small area wise but is packed, and if you dont see it up front they may have it in back, so just ask.Not only do they blend tobacco is in house, they also have an in-house pipe maker. So on top of all the namebrand pipes they also have their own pipes being made right there in the back room, and they will make one specifically for you if you request. They will also blend a personal tobacco for you to your specifications. They go above and beyond here, I cant say enough good things about this shop!Ive had issues where I have damaged my pipe, broken it, Ive brought it in and they have fixed it right there on the spot if it is simple (for them, for me Ive thought it hopeless) or Ive come back in a week and had it fixed; often for no charge at all! They take care of there customers. I am not Mr. cool in some cool little click there, Im just a regular customer, and they always take care of me!There prices are good, and if you factor in the service that you get, then the prices are amazing! When you get the service that JL Perettis offers it makes you proud to support a brick and mortar. Since I started going here a few years back Ive stoped buying things online, their service is a great example of why we need small business and why we should limit our online shopping.I know Ill be going here for the rest of my life!
Terrific store in downtown Boston, dealt with Steve took good care of me. Found me some nice stogies
Great service! Really nice selection, no BS, and and old-skool vibe. Check it out!
Great place and the guys led me to a perfect cigar for my walk around Beacon Hill. I hope I get to come back sometime!
Good experiences all the time. Awesome prices.
Excellent, historic tobacconist. Very friendly staff and very good selection of cigars.
Great friendly staff know their stuff
Notice how all the negative reviews are from A Google User? Man up and post the review under your name!Anyway, I went to Perettis last night, it was my 1st time. The gentleman behind the counter asked me what I usually smoked. He showed me where I could find the La Glorias and also showed me some other smokes I might like. I went with his recommendation as was pleasantly surprised.I hung out for a bit, chatted with the staff and other customers. Great place, Ill be heading back.
Historical place with good options. Good prices for Boston. Hours are not great.
I went to L.J. Peretti three times this summer. They have a good selection of premium cigars, and their customer service were good on 2 of my 3 visits. Will be going back here for sure, next time Im in Massachusetts.
Amazing!
Ive dealt with Peretti around 8 or 9 times in the past 10 years or so, all by phone except once. They have some fantastic tobacco. The one time I visited the shop, a guy around 70 or so, thin, medium height, was so appallingly rude that I finally asked him if he actually wanted my business. My phone experiences have been reasonably pleasant maybe half the time, the rest not so much, like they are taking pride in being brusque. I continue to deal with them because one of their flake blends I cant seem to get elsewhere.Once I ordered 2 or 3 blends, and after delivery weighed them and discovered Id been shorted significantly. I emailed the shop, and received a huffy letter from the owner, among other things telling me how long they have been in business (like how dare I call them on their s---).It surprises me that they are still in business.
Some great smoke sticks here. Very kind people that know their stuff too. Prices are very fair as well.
Great tobacco shop, albeit small inside. The staff was very friendly and the Peretti 125 Churchill was pure, creamy, Connecticut goodness.
Old style cigar store, knowledgeable folks who love tobacco.
I look everywhere for partagas cigars. This cigar shop had partagas! This place is 48 miles from where I live. Ive gone up purely for this cigar shop.
Great shop! When in Boston, a must stop for the pipe and cigar lover.
They are very helpful, if you have any questions be sure to ask, that really know their cigars, tobaccos and pipes
Solid customer service experience. Bought a box of La Gloria Cubana No. 6 and when I got home I saw what I thought was cigar mold on the foot of three cigars. Brought the three back in to get replaced and the man I spoke with explained that I was actually looking at cigar plume-- but he had no problem at all replacing the cigars for me with the same (but No. 7) cigars as long as I was comfortable with that. In fact he added an EXTRA cigar for good measure. So even if the customer may be wrong (and I might be, admittedly) Peretti made everything right again. Nice work.Told him Id be back next time my humidor needs a refill.
Incredibly rude. I was a bit lost, trying to find the shop, so I called and asked for directions and I was told to pull my head out of my ass. I guess they dont want my business.
Nice folks, great selection. Not to be missed when in Boston
Very knowledgeable and talkative about all things cigars.
Incredible service! They even stayed open past closing so that I could make a selection.
