If you have ever contemplated going to a sound healing class go to Billys!! Its as if he is part human part octopus during his sessions. So many different instruments, sounds and vibrations. He is a one man band and will take you on an inner journey. He also is a great teacher. Taking hand pan lessons with him. He is so patient and makes me feel at ease as Im learning. Thank you Billy for all you do.
Loved the store - they have a unique selection of sound instruments... each one is precious! What I loved even more was this beautiful sound healing session that we attended. It’s so different from any sound healing session I’ve been to. Billy uses multiple instruments during the session... each one has such a beautiful sound that you leave feeling happy and energized.
Just go. If you love drums, chimes, flutes, singing bowls you gotta go....
We love our trips to Skinny Beats! Such unique and unusual instruments... and the Sound Healing Concerts are so restful and grounding. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
Incredible world percussion and sound healing shop!
Skinny Beats Sound Shop was on our list of things to do while visiting Asheville recently, and we were not disappointed! We made an appointment to explore the extensive inventory of sound instruments that Billy has and ended up purchasing some awesome instruments for our yoga studio. We also indulged in a private sound session with Billy and loved every minute of it. Billy was very friendly and helpful, and we highly recommend his unique shop!
WOW...! I read some of the 1 and 2 star reviews, and Im shocked. I was visiting from Beaufort, SC, and I went into the store with 3 kids. A cool employee was there (see image), and yes, he did tell us that hed prefer it if we didnt touch some of the instruments, but he did it very nicely... and he asked us if wed like him to play for us. He played for about 5 minutes on the quartz bowls, the gong, and a few other instruments.IT WAS AMAZING!!!He also invited us to the Saturday Sound Healing and it was a full house... It was about 15 of us, laying on the floor, and the owner - Billy Zansky - led us through an amazing meditation (about 3 to 4 minutes wih his words... then about 30-some minutes with his music)... even my 9-year old enjoyed it tremendously.ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR 1-WEEK TRIP.We all said that if we lived in Ashville, wed attend the Sound Healing sessions every Saturday.Thank the cool employee who invited us to the Saturdays Healing Sounds; and BIG THANKS to Billy Zansky! :)
Loved this place! Very cool instruments and very helpful workers. They let us mess around with all the instruments and showed us how to play them. The guy was very cool and was casually playing other instruments while we were there.
This shop is over-the-top in every way. I went to the sound healing one Sunday at noon and it was simply amazing. I returned one afternoon to check out the instruments and met Derek who was very kind and answered my questions and interestingly enough is a hammered dulcimer player and instructor. I have been interested in learning to play this instrument for years but have not found anyone who is able or willing to teach. I am looking forward to spending more time in this magical place.
Billy does an amazing Sound Healing on Saturday and Sunday. It is hard to describe exactly what he does but the effect is magical. Sometimes the sounds are soft and sometimes they powerfully penetrate your whole being. Billy is so talented and he uses a unique variety of instruments to create this flow of energy that is tangible and ethereal at the same time. I love it!
This was my second time in the shop and the second time loving it. Had sound healings both times and it was magical. Billy knows his instruments and how to use them to help people heal. I bought a crystal bowl and Billy helped me in selecting the right one using intuition and self trust balanced with knowledge and experience. Thanks my friend. Till the next time.
The guy at the shop was a total D. I went in looking to purchase $3500 drum. I have been in the store before and had the opportunity to play the drum. I went to Play it again to make sure it was both the tuning that I wanted and that it sounded like I had remembered it sounding. The guy got highly offended that I would try to touch the drum. Afterwards he basically said that he didn’t mean any disrespect but that that area was separate. So perhaps he didn’t mean any disrespect by not allowing me to touch something I needed to touch in order to figure out if I wanted to buy it … Or maybe he didn’t mean any disrespect by offering it for $500 more than you can get the same item online from the supplier who is only a few miles away. Not sure either way made it clear that I shouldn’t touch the drum.
This place is a veritable treasure trove of world percussion instruments the like! Everything from djembes to handpans and more. Definitely recommend checking it out!
Great shop, unless you buy and drum and break it and then expect them replace it for free even though drums dont come with insurance no matter where you buy them. If you dont expect things for free you will love Skinny Beats and its extremely knowledgeable owner Billy.
Unique selection of instruments, and Matthew was awesome! Go in and ask to listen to the singing bowls! You wont be disappointed.
My husband and I were in Asheville NC to go to the Salt Caves and he was just starting to do a sound healing class so we joined in. We left there went to the Caves and it didnt measure up to the class Billy gave. Made sure to get a DVD. What an awesome experience. Would definitely do the class again and the store was great too.
Billy was engaging and we loved the intro drumming class. Wealth of knowledge.
Avoid this place at all costs!!!!!!True story this weekend:The guy in the store is a total JERK!Went in with my two children, who didnt touch a drum. I started touching them & was told we dont just let people come in and touch the drums, you could have some moisture on your fingers. Which I replied how do you know how they sound & feel if you cant touch them?At this time two teen boys walked in and the skinny little jerk running the place asked me are these your children too? A complete A-hole. The guy has no music recording cred. and is a sad wimp.
Amazing experience. They are very helpful and kind.. Thank you so much for such a beautiful experience💕💖💕
Love this shop! So many fun and wonderfully sounding items here. Great quality drums, chimes, bowls, etc. And Billy is so nice!
This place has a great selection of drums, singing bowls, and other instruments. The proprietor was very friendly and knowledgeable.
The sound healing here is magical. I loved my experience and plan to go back a lot more.
This place was loads of fun. Wonderful crowd. Fantastic instructor.
This place is amazing. Excellent stock and selection. Great classes and an amazing atmosphere. Best Asheville drum shop!
The guy that runs this place (Billy?) is incredibly rude, arrogant, and unwelcoming. Its a wonder how he keeps something as specialized (and silly, really) as a drum shop going with such atrocious customer service. He doesnt embody the welcoming spirit of Asheville at all. Dont waste your money here. I took my business to Musicians Workshop & had a great experience there.
Poorly run drum session on Sundays. Crowded, overpriced, and unclean space and blankets
Best place in Asheville for African drums and more! Great staff, and group drum lessons every week! One of my new favorite places downtown!
Super cool shop, so many drums to check out
Good shop for unique instruments. Highly recommend.
One of the best places to stop on the weekend for sound healing vibrations
Horribly elitist staff. Theres a creepy guy named Billy who talks down to people like they have downs syndrome or something, not sure what his problem is but he sure did a great job of scaring off a willing customer.
Great guy there ive been 2 times and its been a great experience every time!
Beware. Company selling drums for several times more you can get same brands off Amazon.
I bought a drum from this shop, which he said I was getting a deal on, and I took it out to play twice (once at the drum circle downtown and once at a meet-up) It developed a crack going about half-way up the drum within those two times. When many people saw me playing and noted that that shouldnt happen to a brand new drum I brought it back to the shop. The guy was super offended by it and went back and forth on his argument; first he didnt sell drums with cracks in them then he switched to noticing the crack and knowing it wasnt a big deal and thats why he gave me a deal on it. I told him that I should have been told there was a crack if he knew that and if it is why I was getting a deal, to which he replied I know what is sufficient for a beginner drummer! I told him that I wanted the same drum but without a crack, for the same price. In the end I wasnt given the same size drum for the same price and he would not give me money back so I had to get a smaller drum, which I really didnt want. When I first went there the guy was really nice and was talking trash on big brand stores and declared if you have any issues we will help you out, were not Wal-mart, haha! But really I would have gotten, and have gotten, much better, and professional, customer service from Wal-mart and a number of other Big brand stores. If you have money he will probably sell you a manageable drum and get a good chunk of change for it, but then again so will anyone, and chances are anything in this store will be far more over priced than some other local shop on e-bay.
A fantastic collection of percussion and stun string instrument, rare and beautiful!
Awesome selection 😊
Excellent service, dope shop, quality instruments. Billy is the man
