Google maps is apparently not accurate to differentiate between By The Pound and the dispensary across the parking lot. Regardless, By The Pound has excellent bulk goods at low prices. Best place to get Russian Caravan tea in town as well.
Rustic? Yes. Authentic? Definitely. By the Pound started in the 1980’s in Ann Arbor, MI but has many historical precedents, when flours, grains, sweets, teas were sold at any General Store before the prepackaged Industrial Age. The store moved to its present location 3, 4 years ago. This store is Colonial, “Old World” vintage feel. Thus the inventions of Electricity, Coolant systems and modern day conveniences changed the way products were sold. This is a throwback store without containers for the majority of spices and powders. We, 21st century folks take packaging and refrigeration for granted. You determine prices per pound by the quantity of product you choose. A large variety of items to choose from. The gentleman had an accent that wasn’t a Michiganders, next time I visit, I’ll ask him about it. Atmosphere and reception is very important to this reviewer, and I’m happy to say, Acceptance, was in evidence. Enjoy your adventure in this store as there is a lot to choose from and purchase.
Great, helpful service! Great prices and unique items that I couldnt find elsewhere. Ill be back!
Just called to ask about Wheat, Flour, Rice, and Chocolate. A young man named Hollis answered, very nice young fellow. I hope to visit the store sometime this weekend, and take my findings back to the small town of Dover England, to share these ingredients with my neighbours.
I absolutely love this store for all my Loose tea I get from them.
One of my favorite shops in all of Ann Arbor. I visit every other week to stock up on pantry essentials. I always buy my coffee, spices, oats, flours, falafel mix, nuts, and honey from here because I can bring my own jars or containers. They also have a small selection of canned goods and refrigerated items. If you’re looking to ban single use plastic from your life, this is a great option.
Very good selection of spices - found exactly what I need :-)Tip: I’m from Canada and I was not used to writing down the product + cost per lb on the label so I definitely recommend this to avoid the cashier sending you back (haha).
Absolutely loves it here! Brought my own jars to fill and they helped me tare them. They also had some free container and bags to fill if you didnt bring your own.. or you can buy their jars to support their business! My kids and I will definitely be returning! The mixed nuts without peanuts is EXCELLENT! They have so much more than I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised!
By the Pound is such a community asset. They have such a wide array of products. The staff are always helpful and friendly. Since last year, it is 1 of the 3 stores that I trust to go into for shopping. The variety of flours, spices, and lentils is amazing. A real gem!!
Look forward to going back to get more goodies, lots of great stuff, so glad my son shops there regularly..
I hadnt been there in years. Didnt know I would find so many useful and/or inspiring things.
Helpful staff, great prices, excellent selection. Its by far the best place in town to buy herbs and spices
I love this place!! It’s so nice to refill your spices right in the container! We eat a lot of nooch, rice, legumes, nuts, ect in this house so being able to buy them and put them into our containers from home is just perfect. Also as a baker, it’s nice to find a place that has bulk flour in all kinds! Seriously, check out this place if you have the time (they have bags there for you as well, we just like to bring our containers)
A real A2 classic. Friendly & has alot of hippie food you cant find anywhere else.
You can bring your own clean container to fill, fyi!
Great variety, staffing, prices. I could spend so much time and money here
Extensive selection of bulk food items, they even had food additives like xanthan gum. They are happy to let you use your own containers with the weight tared out. Prices are a bit higher than typical bulk food places but its just the Ann Arbor factor.
Love this store. Has a lot of alternative foods and spices.
The BEST place to buy spices, rice, teas, nuts, and candy for cheap. Currently building up my spice rack at home and needed a ton of spices. The spices smell great and fresh and I will visit again next time I need more!
Theyre taking safety precautions seriously. Im glad theyve been able to stay open. I love their great selection.
Wonderful spice and herb selection, knowledgeable staff.
Great store, lots of things you dont find everyday without a special trip.
I love this place. The workers are always so lovely and theyre doing a great job staying safe during the pandemic. Everything is reasonably priced. An Ann Arbor staple!
Being able to buy just the right amount of what I want is excellent especially when I am trying something new. The quality of product and price is very good. The staff is always friendly. It’s a fun store to shop at.
My sister and I love shopping in this clean, friendly store. All sorts of spices and dried grains to take just what you need or want
Expensive place to get most everyday items, but they have a wide variety of interesting and hard-to-find specialty items.Customer service is good. Bring your own grocery bags.
Everyone is to sanitize and put on gloves upon entry!! They have made efforts to package many of the items already, which is very helpful - I almost like it better this way. The new space is so much bigger and nicer!!!! I would love to see a tea house patio!!!!
I shop here for all my dry goods because I can use my own containers. The owner will also give you a discount for buying the entire bag/box that he buys from his supplier.
Cute family owned business that has all your baking/spice/tea/grain/bean needs available for bulk purchase at reasonable prices.
Better than the Co-Ops around here.
Always a great experience. They always have what I need and the staff is helpful and friendly.
The staff here are so helpful! They have always had yeast and many varieties of flour and even during the height of the shortages in the spring.
Excellent variety of dry goods, spices, tea, and an eclectic assortment of other groceries (sauces, syrups, canned goods, etc.). They are handling pandemic shopping very well. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. And, you can bring your own containers to minimize waste (some exceptions now due to the pandemic)! Highly recommended.
Only place Ive found with bulk gf flours and I can bring my own containers.
Great store with friendly staff that allows you to select the amount of lots of different or specialty goods.
Essential store. Great quality and great value.
Super nice staff and you can find a lot of hard to find flours.
This is the best dry goods store Ive ever been to. They have very affordable prices and anything you could ever want, there are roots and herbs here that I can only get online otherwise. Easily the best store Ive ever been to.
I LOVE THIS PLACE. Its just made of happiness. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Its so easy to bring in your own jars and containers - just write down/snap a photo of how much the empty container weighs on their scale, fill it up, and then tell them the empty weight and price per pound when checking out and the register does the math for you. I am so glad I found this store, and will be going back for so many things (cooking oils, vanilla, all sorts of flours, nuts, teas, grains, spices, even sprouting seeds, vinegar powder, candy... just, wow). I weirdly cant wait until something runs out in my kitchen and needs to get refilled, because I just love being surrounded by so many great bulk edibles. If kitchen stores bring you joy, this place will definitely also bring you joy.
The only place in town for bulk foods. Great selection, good prices, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Easy to shop. Cost is much less when you purchase just what you need. No more buying spice in large containers only to have to throw most out because it gets too old.
This place is a hidden gem. Full of enticing spice aromas, classical music, and good vibes from the employees, I simply love shopping here.
My favorite place to shop for bulk foods or even small quantities of flour, chocolate, rolled oats, and more. They have a huge variety of products. The service from the owner and employees is always friendly, helpful, and enjoyable. You can also call ahead to place an order.
I LOVE by the pound. They are always adding new things and I hope they continue to get bigger! I like to bring my own containers but they also have different shapes and sizes you can buy to reuse.
Great store, good prices. Fantastic for obscure items, and especially spices.
If you care about spacing, AVOID here. There are no postings nor guidelines to ensure safety. Then I bought a bag of licorice thats has been expired for over a year. Horrible experience. I will definitely be buying my spices and bulk at the co-op.
Bulk food at great prices, and any questions will be answered by a staff that is both knowledgeable and friendly. Great folks running a great store, you really should check them out.
Great service awesome products
There is a wide variety and the staff is helpful.
Great products, great prices, nice peeps
Best place to get herbs and spices. Been coming here since I was 4yrs old. Family owned local business.
By the Pound is my favorite grocery store in Ann Arbor. I am a long time customer and am still amazed at what you can find there. It is the best place in town to buy spices, flours, sugars, vanilla, candy (especially handy for Christmas), teas, coffees, the list goes on. Glenn and Michael are friendly and helpful and I am so happy that BTP is now situated in my side of town.
This place is a sham. It is not a true source of sustainable bulk foods. It’s than costco- sized bulk foods placed in pretty jars to make you feel like you’re doing the right thing. They use a ton of plastic, and to top it off, they’re snobby and rude. The only good thing is that they’re incredibly cheap.
Do not go in there often, its across town for me but a great store to go to. Its always clean, service is good. Great place to go to for buying candy, nuts, chocolate, you name it, they probably have it. A store worth checking out!!!!!! Its on industrial street in Ann arbor.
This is the coolest place! They have everything you need and everything you didnt know you wanted!Tea, coffee, spices, they even sell noodles for heaven sake. Its an actual blessing for those who are only in need of enough ingredients for 1 meal.Great prices, the best selection, and super nice staff makes this a favorite!
Glenn is amazing, he always has everything I need!
Love BTP, the best place for bulk foods I have ever found. Glenn is awesome, 25 years so far, no end in sight.
Just a wonderful place. I most often go there for the freshest coffee beans with the best prices in town. When I need spices they have all that Im looking for, plus some. Lots of delicious treats; the dark chocolate-covered toffee with almonds... 😍 This place is a treasure.
Amazing teas and herbs, the awesomest little store
Great selection of products, grains, beans, spices, dried fruit, nuts and of course candy. They also have oils and storage containers of various sizes. The prices are hard to beat.
Love this place. I used to walk here all the time on my lunch hour before they moved and I really miss it. Theyre such a great, locally owned place! Really nice guys! Great prices. I definitely recommend it!!
One of Ann arbors gems. Im able to keep my spice and tea cabinets well stocked without breaking my bank. The owners keep an amazing selection and are always willing to expand it further to meet needs. Grab a bit of sea foam chocolates too!!!
Really cool place!!! Amazing deals and tons of different spices.
Best. Bulk. Food. Period. Too many good things to say 😊
I really like this place. Friendly staff, great selection of teas and other specialty items. If you ride your bike there, you can get 5% off your purchase...love that
This is such a great shop! The staff is very friendly, and they always have nice music playing while you shop. I stop in once every few weeks to get some new tea, and they have an awesome selection of other bulk goods and packaged curries (a staple I happen to live off of). This is definitely the place to go when you need a little or a lot of all sorts of interesting food.
Awesome place, friendly service its definitely going to be a new favorite spot.
This place has a great variety of good quality bulk items
Great place to buy spices, baking supplies, etc that are fresh, especially if you dont need a large amount. They carry local honey.
Glad this long time AA store is still here in their new location when they were displaced by that monsterous apartment building on Main. Great way to buy spices that are fresh and you buy only what you need. Staples, candy, etc. Its such an economical way to buy and bonus of less trash from packaging in the environment. Try their extensive collection of tea and coffee. AA Blend is our favorite coffee.
Best place to get a small or larger amount of anything from the best double dipped malted milk balls to granola. Plenty of chocolates ( high quality) candies. Spices, salty snack that are hard to find. Outstanding and friendly service. Lovely place
Best variety of bulk items Ive found in Ann Arbor. They even sell reusable containers if you dont bring enough with you!
This place is awesome! I had no idea they would have flour and olive oil and was happily surprised. Super helpful, too.
Nice store. Great selection of chocolate.
I go there whenever I am near it. The dark chocolate chips are the best. The store is larger now. It reminds me of a old fashion co-op store. Staff is always helpful
Literally my favorite place in Ann Arbor, it always makes my day better to shop here. It is the perfect blend of affordability, sustainability, and healthfulness. You can bring your own containers to further reduce your plastic consumption.
Always clean, stocked. Good prices, getting more organic. Very friendly, helpful staff. Like classical music playing in background, not too loud.
Buy the pound or ounce. Favorite coffees, flours, spices, dried fruits and candies. Great deals on all!
Great prices. Some local foods. BYO container to avoid using plastic bags. Excellent selection of spices, grains, flours, candor candy, dried fruits, coffee and snacks. Some international/hard to come-by foods. Also they do sell containers and some kitchen/baking tools.
Love this place. Its the best source fir fresh spices at a reasonable price per ounce, but its a lot more than that. Lots of boxed/canned specialty foods, in addition to the bulk coffees, teas, cake sprinkles, baking goods, nuts, dried fruit, candy, oils, etc. Bring your own containers, weigh them before filling them, and save a ton of $$.
This is my go-to spot for all of my baking needs! The quality, price and array of selection are unmatched. I have found spices, flours, grains, extracts, sauces and teas that I have yet to find anywhere else. Plus, the owner is so charming and I always feel very happy strolling through their plentiful bins while listening to the classical music they play on weekday afternoons. I love this place it really is one of my favorite spots in Ann Arbor.
Bulk food in a relaxing atmosphere. They have rarities in flour, rice, tea, coffee, sweets, imported foods. It is easy to tare your containers when you enter to allow for a reduced environmental impact. Also, classical music makes for a calm shopping trip.
Best place ever
So happy to find this place, wish I started shopping here sooner.
I’ve been a loyal customer of By the Pound since the days they were located in the little plaza on Main St. Now it’s in a space off Industrial Ave. This grocery is so awesome. They have THE best selection of loose teas in the city, and all are high quality. I buy my green tea here (they have a high grade Izu Matcha that is fantastic) and also oolongs and various Indian black teas. Vast selection of all types of tea. They also carry a great assortment of bulk spices, grains, baking supplies etc. There are various imported foods and ingredients available on the shelves as well. This place is amazing. Glenn the owner is a very cool and kind man. I love chatting with him. By the Pound makes my list of top ten institutions that add to the unique and incredible identity of Ann Arbor.
Great as always! The place to go for your baking, Herb, and spice needs.
Just about anything imaginable sold by the pound with a terrific selection of spices, nuts, candies, serials and baking supplies, teas, dried fruit and other commodities. Essential for foodies, strongly recommended for all others, and conveniently located for shoppers who already frequent nearby Luckys and/or The Produce Station.
Pretty small store and not big bins or many actual bulk items. Good if you live close but not if you have to travel to get here...
Love By the Pound. Go to place for tea, staples, spices and nuts. Great people
Great place to get bulk goods, really lovely people
As the name suggests, you buy everything by the pound. They offer things like whole coffee beans, candy, spices, dried fruits and veggies.
We drive from Ohio just to stock up on spices, teas, and dry goods. Excellent quality. Try it, you will never buy grocery store spices again! Great prices. You will not regret going.
I love this place! Im trying to go plastic free and I was able to bring my own jars. The selection is immense.
The By the Pound is awesome! Their bulk prices are wonderful and they have everything. From dark-chocolate dipped malt balls to whole vanilla beans to oats and honey. The staff is super helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.
Wonderful selection of bulk spices, nuts, and sundries. The loose tea selection is outstanding as well. The new location gives the store a more open feeling than the old shop.
Pasta, liquids, beans, pantry staples, flours,, teas, spices all in bins ready for bulk buy. There are some basic zero waste products to make the swaps. I took my containers and i had no problem using them. Staff wasnt the in best of moods but she was running around all the time, managing the store alone, so please dont hold that against the staff.
