Open on Sunday evening until 700 PM, large and eclectic Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, and True Crime sections. But the mystery section was superlative! I went with a firm, hard stop goal of buying one small book and walked out with three. It just happened. Highly recommended with knowledgeable staff.

Support your local book stores! Its easy to do when theyre this great! Vast selection, friendly staff, and a decent collection of kid-oriented gadgets and knick knacks that arent bleed-you-dry expensive, just go check it out. The only thing keeping the fifth star back is the parking lot: its always crazy and crowded, park carefully and keep your cool.

After spending about 15 minutes sitting in a chair with no signage indicating it wasnt supposed to be sat in, I was asked to move as it was intended for browsing (I thought that was what I was doing, but I guess I overstayed). They asked me to move, so I found a stool and then a bench, both of which I was told to vacate. There is nothing indicating that customers should refrain from reading in the store; it seems like they are actively turning away business. I understand theres special pandemic rules but sitting masked up in a nearly empty store is hardly risky behavior. Ive never felt so unwelcome for quietly reading a $30 hardback I had been planning to buy in order to support what I thought was a lovely independent bookshop.

Do you like books? Well if you do, Ive got something for you... Nicolas Books! So many stories to read. It is impossible to read them all! The summer games are a hit! There is even a little more than books. And you can get the books online. If I could give it infinity stars I definitely would! (Sophie, age 8)

I love coming to Nicolas books. I also love that is right by the library. Off and I will check out a book and decide I want it in my personal library at home and Im lucky I can pop right over to Nicolas books to pick up a copy for myself. They have a wonderful section for Michigan books both nature and Michigan authors. Their childrens book area is magical with a huge selection of topics and ages. I also love that they have a used book section so you can pick up a few favorites for cheaper. There are always a couple treats at the checkout. You can earn points toward a discount on books each time you purchase. They also have a variety of Michigan car decals/stickers.

Ive actually been spoken to rudely, and impatiently by the managing presence once as well as the counter helpers a couple of times, but - this store is a different situation than most businesses. With Borders and Barnes & Noble, then Amazon suffocating 98% of bookstores and other stores in the world, it still feels good finding what Im looking for at Nicolas so I can feel like Ive done a minor part of keeping them alive. I moved here from the east coast 30+ years ago and I have been getting hobby magazines and fiction at this store throughout what feels like my entire memory of living in A2, whether theyre happy or not, Nicolas is a symbol and landmark, not just a store.

I love visiting this store; it gives me those feelings I lost from previous bookstores I used to love walking through. I love looking at the recommendations the people that work there leave on the shelves. I love discovering things I didnt know existed. You cannot get these feelings shopping online.

Nicolas is such a gem of a bookstore thats in Ann Arbor. So happy that they are still here and that people love books and bookstores. This bookstore is great. They are locally owned and highlight products from and about Michigan. This is a GREAT place to get cute gifts. They have fun, unique jigsaw puzzles (including ones for adults). I am thrilled to have found this place and can not recommend it highly enough. Support local businesses!

This is one of the best independent bookstores in Ann Arbor. Ok, there are a lot of good indie bookstores in Ann Arbor, but this is my top pick for an indie selling newly published books. Nicolas has been around forever, and theres a reason why - if you need a new book, get it at Nicolas! I believe they are still offering contact-free pick-up options, and the store is also open for socially distanced browsing or online orders that ship right to your door.

Great book selection, as always. Great puzzles for all levels (I bought a 2000 piece! ). One way flow through store, met at door where staff explained the traffic flow, offered hand sanitizer, checked that everyone was wearing masks. They even have it set up to exit out the side door! Well done!

I visited today and was greeted at the door with a warm and pleasant explaination of mask policy, arrows on the floor, tables to place items I touch, but chose not to purchase to be sanitized, sanitizer provided upon entry, and one door in / one for out policy. I felt very safe and am glad I made the 30 minutes trip to pick up treasures. Thank you!

Independent bookstores are becoming so rare we try to frequent Nicola’s Books. It is a great place to browse for unusual books as well as best sellers and over the years we’ve found some surprises. I highly recommend anyone who values the written word on paper instead of electronic versions make an effort to visit these stores!

Great place to browse and sample. If only i didnt feel guilty about every book I pick-up needing to be placed on a cart for disinfecting and re-shelving.

Im so glad we have a local bookstore so close by. The staff know so much! You can walk in ask for a book, theyll go right to it, you buy and are out the door and on your way in 15 minutes. Its so refreshing to find a store where the salespeople actually know about the product they sell, know where it is, and efficiently go about the process of ringing it up. They even gift wrapped the book! Its hard to find a store like this any more. Im so glad theyre there.

I have no idea how you can not give 5 stars for such a beautiful place.Even if you dont like to read - Stop by Nicolas book and you will fall in love with literature. That simple.The books selections is without limit. They even carries books in foreign languages (We always found some nice French book for our daughters).The outside rack is always full of very interesting (and discounted / cheap) selection.The staff is incredibly available and ready to jump in a quest to find you that perfect books you need to read without ever knowing that one excited.A great place, one of my favorite shop in Ann Arbor.

Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Store is well laid out and easy to navigate. Events are run smoothly and they host a wide variety of them. Great experience. I make an effort to stop in whenever I am in the area.

GREAT little book store with a wide (and well-curated, in my opinion) selection of titles. Helpful and friendly staff who will help you find something or just leave you to browse away. They also have a wonderful little collection of unique gift items, including many with a Michigan (that is, the State of Michigan) theme. You can also find cards, journals, graphic novels, magazines, and more. Bookstores are a dying breed so it felt good to support this brick-and-mortar business. A nice afternoon respite, good for the soul.

I try to buy from them as much as possible. I like the selection and the relaxed vibe! Im an auto mechanic, so I wish they had more of an automotive book section, but I realize that I am an outlier in that regard. They do have a nice selection of business and marketing titles.

Even if you dont like books this place is a paradise. Theres something for everyone (magazines, small utilitary items, stationary, games) and most of the items they carry are carefully selected and good quality/material. Decent prices and outstanding customer care. From hosting regular events to great advice this bookstore would let you the feel you need to come back again to explore more.

Best selection of kids books Ive ever seen in one book store...and as a reading specialist, Im picky. The informational books (nonfiction) is an especially rich section, with multicultural topics interwoven but also clearly identified. Great board books! You wont get sick of reading them aloud and then you just hand them to the toddler... For ready? Teething? Whatever. Itll keep them busy!

I love Nicolas! They not only have a great selection of books, but they have lots of other wonderful gift items and interesting greeting cards - not the typical Hallmark style. You can find creative and fun gifts for everyone from children to adults (and their childrens book section is fabulous!)

Frustrating shopping trip in December 2020. At least five employees working around the cash registers with only one register open and a line of customers waiting to check out. If you have a particularly slow customer ahead of you with a large order, like I did, youll be stuck inside breathing the same air as everyone else for a long time. Needlessly dangerous.

This is an excellent bookstore with an Ann Arbor vibe. Come here to browse a unique collection of books, media, and gifts.Books and media are very well-organized and there is a database in which staff can search for availability of a particular product.My only reservations here are the prices and the friendliness and warmth of the staff. Prices can be a little high compared to other stores and vendors, but then you also have to consider the benefit of supporting a small local business. I have found that the staff are not always warm and welcoming, sometimes acting annoyed by or even ignoring customers.This dampens the experience for me, but I like this book store too much for this to keep me from coming back.

Was just charged for a book or books that I did not order. 73.00 was charged to my account. I have never been to Ann Arbor nor would I ever consider going there to buy a book. 3 times in 2 weeks, and no one is doing anything about the fraudulent charge?? We live on an island in Texas. Lets stop trying to make a buck and actually ask for ID. Ask for a phone number. Call to make sure the person is who is actually making the purchase.

Nicolas is a fantastic book store! I go there almost every weekend, and the staff knows me! Its very cozy and homey feeling there and there is something for everyone. Their little touches make it great, like the little fairy door and the childrens discount (children get a discount if they buy books with their own money). All the staff is very kind and helpful.

Do not shop here during the holidays! I stopped in to purchase a book to give as a Christmas present, but couldnt get any help because all the staff members were cashiering. I had to wait in a long line to ask for help and was quite pleased the cashier was able to help me locate the item on the shelf when it was my turn. As we walked back to the register I asked her if she would ring me up for the item or was she going to make me go to the end of the line. She looked at me a said, ummm... and she kind of chuckled sarcastically like how dare I ask her that and quickly walked away ignoring me. I was like, how rude is that? First I have to wait in a long line just to ask for help, then youre going to make me go back to the end of the line to wait again? Shame on you, Nicolas! Your staff needs to be trained better when it comes to customer service. You have lost my business for good.RIP Borders. You are sincerely missed.
