Have been a customer at GNG for over 15 years. Sad to see it closing as I consider it an end of an era. Was able to pick up a nice Kimber mountain hunting rifle that Jeff mounted a Leupold scope on for me during their final days. Congratulations to Joe on 53 years of business and good luck to all the staff on their future endeavors. Enjoy retirement Joe, you’ve earned it.
Another person who has experienced horrible customer service. I bought some .32 and few year back and had a decent interaction with the fat guy that prowl seem to be having the bad time with. My issue is with one of the other guys. I know it would be a long shot to find some 5.56 or .233, but when when I had asked the man just shook his head in a condescending manner. No verbal interaction, no respect for the customer. So then I had asked if they had an AR multi tool, and again. No verbal response just as there condescending head shake with no eye contact whatsoever. Done them like this place wants customers and after reading all the negative reviews on here, I won’t be giving this place another dime of mine...
Top notch service and fast shipping. 3200 miles . I received excellent communication with transaction details and multiple pictures of my purchase. I would definitely buy from these guys again.
Just bought my first Glock. They have great customer service. Cheap ammo. Highly recommended.
My wife was looking for a Ruger Mark IV Lite in grey with golden barrel and trigger but we couldnt find it anywhere until we discovered an Ad on Guns America from Great Northern Guns Inc. Even all the prices are to the roof during this crazy times the price we saw online was great so we purchased it. What came after the purchased stunned us. I got a call around an our later from Yog on my cell phone where he like to confirmed all my data I places on Guns America with me. He also told me that this specific model is not currently in store but he will have it coming in the next day or a day after. In case I couldnt wait he offered me another model that are in stock. We chose to wait but wasnt really expecting that it will come in the next day as Yog told me. Oh man, I was so wrong because the next day he called and told me the gun came in. We did the financial part over the phone and directly after it he send me pictures of the gun with serial numbers and all the receipts. We had to wait on the FFL license to be emailed from my gun range but as soon as he had it on hand the gun was on the way. I never had such a professional and fast response from a store I bought something and I do a lot of online shopping. I like to share with others this great experience because this is truly outstanding this days and deserves all the appreciation I can give those guys. Thank you so much for an excellent shopping experience. We will be back for our next gun purchase, even you guys are very far away from us. Best wishes from South Carolina
My husband and I have been looking for a Ruger 357, model 5450, for some time now, hard to locate one. Found Guns America online which then directed us to Great Northern Guns in Anchorage, Alaska, which stated they had one in stock. Called Great Northern Guns and spoke with Yog who confirmed he had one left in his stock. We started the purchasing process, and we received our revolver via our local FFL dealer here in Wisconsin within a weeks’ time or so. Yog was a pleasure to speak with, very personable guy. Customer service was awesome. After our initial call and purchase, he sent us updates via texts, with photos of our receipt, the revolver and box. Once shipping was set up, he sent us photos of the tracking information as well. Straight forward purchase with Great Northern Guns and will definitely deal with them again in the future. Appreciated the communication Yog provided. If we had any questions, we would text, and he would respond shortly thereafter. What was more impressive is we would text him in the morning, our time, as we were not thinking about our time difference between Wisconsin and Anchorage, in which he was not even at work yet, but still responded quickly regardless. Appreciate your great customer service!Steve & Sharon, Wisconsin
Great customer service and very personal touch. Great communication and they follow through! Great purchase experience!Mike M
They have quite a bit of firearms and most seem very knowledgeable and relatively friendly. The prices may seem pretty high (sometimes very high), especially on some of the firearms, but most know firearms very well, so youre paying for information you may not get at other gun shops in town. The prices are not always high, sometimes I have seen their prices lower than other gun shops in town, so it all depends.A bit of advice: Don’t expect to have warm and fuzzies throughout the shopping experience. They are often fun to talk to (Ive never had any real problems), but they can come across as a bit harsh and cold to customers. One person in particular can appear to some as rude, but he just takes some warming up to get to know. I read reviews on here that talk negative about him, and I kind of felt the same at first, but he’s a very nice guy once you get to know him. I’m sure he’s had to deal with a lot of rude people over the years, so perhaps his tolerance level is low? Also, if he ever reads this, go easy on the customers, it will be a win win for everyone! 😅I think some of the staff likes to kid around a lot (some of it friendly teasing) which some customers take the wrong way. Even though it may come off as abrasive, I think they honestly just have a different sense of humor than a lot of people do.I guess the bottom line is that they are there to sell guns--not flowers, so keep that in mind when you shop there. If you are a very sensitive person, then I would definitely leave that at the door, or perhaps look elsewhere.Would I recommend this place? Yes,just be advised that it’s not “Mr Rogers Gun Store.”
I purchesed a Ruger 22/45 lite from Great Northen Guns. There price was the best I found anywhere. Yog and the crew at Great Northern guns sent me pictures of the gun and all the paperwork. I had the gun shipped to a local FFL and should be able to pick it up soon. From start to finish it was a great buying experience and I will look to them next time I purchase a firearm.
I checked Guns America and found a new Ruger Mark IV Lite offered by Great Northern Guns in Anchorage Alaska. I spoke with Yog and said it was sold. I left my number and Yog called telling me the Ruger was available. Yog made this purchase easy and was very Helpful. I am very satisfied with this transaction.
I was in search of a pistol that I couldn’t find anywhere. One day I decided to send Great Northern Guns an email just to see if they had what I was looking for. I received a call back almost immediately. I spoke with Yog and he was more than helpful. He answered every question I had and was able to make this almost impossible purchase happen! I’m so thankful I decided to reach out. I will always reach out to Yog personally when I’m in search of my next pistol. Thank you so much Yog, for everything you did to help make this purchase happen for me! I’m forever grateful!
I purchased a new Ruger Mark IV Lite thru GunsAmerica and the transaction couldnt of been any better thanks to their Rep. Yog at Great Northern Guns in Anchorage.
Service is the best delivery is quick and they will have what your looking for you wont be disappointed
Outstanding customer service. Highly recommend Great Northern.
Just got off the phone with this company after seeing one of their listings on Guns America. I was all the way to the checkout screen and ready to place my order when I called to pay and they told me that the price was higher than advertised. They insisted that the price was from an old ad, even though I was able to complete the checkout and it had it listed as available. They would not honor the listing price, which was only a $50 difference on a $1,000+ item. They even acknowledged that it sounded like they were trying to rip me off, but refused to budge. Be aware of some unsavory business practices here.
Never knew that many guns in one place. The staff is very helpful.
I went in having read the reviews. They had the ammo I needed and I was treated almost overly hospitably. Ill be back for sure. They have a much larger selection then you would expect in such a small gun store. Prices were cheaper than sportsmans warehouse for better ammo.
They usually have what you need or can order it for you . A great local gun store...
Very good experience!Jeff took the time to answer all my questions and gave excellent advice. Did not mind showing me many different product options. Will definitely return, and highly recommend!
Had been recommended by a salesman at Bass pro since they didnt have the weapon I was looking for. I told them the firearm I was interested in and immediately saw their price was $100 more than Alaska custom firearms. I let them know this and asked if they wanted to be competitive with their price to make a sale and he responded with then why arent you over there?Good point sir! But Im on my way over there now, couldnt leave the parking lot without writing this review first.
I took a first time handgun buyer to choose and purchase the right gun for her needs. Yog took the time to pick the correct gun giving her several great options but settling on the best one with her input. He demonstrated the breakdown of the pistol and had a high quality holster available as well. My friend was very pleased and impressed. A “small” gun store with a huge selection and great staff. Thanks Yog!
Frank, Gene, and Jeff were absolute Gentlemen. They were warm, welcoming, and respect of me as a woman, and I felt Heard. They were highly informative and had a great sense of humor and were selfless with advice and education. I felt like I was at home with family.A Friend suggest that I start with Great Northern Guns but I shopped around a little before going There. I wasted my time. The gentlemen a GNG made my decision making process and purchase so easy.I look forward to stopping in the shop from time to time to say Hi, shoot the breeze, and learn from the BEST in the business. They made what could have been a daunting purchase, both fun and educational. Thank you!Warm Regards,Stacey Tomey
Wide selection and attentive staff. Went in to buy a S&W hammer-less 38 and found the one i wanted when they gave me the option to buy a similar one with laser built in for 10 bucks cheaper because it was going on sale the next day. On top of that they threw in a few rounds on the house. Prices as far as the other guns go are very reasonable. I am sending all my friends their way.
A true old time gun store thats a dying breed! No room to walk because the place is packed with quality firearms of a bygone era. The prices are on the high end of reasonable but I have always been able to strike a deal. I purchased a pre-war M70 and the man behind the counter found me 4 screws in a drawer to fill the drilled holes in the receiver. I make it a point to stop here in my travels through Anchorage and you should too!
Had no help or customer service when entering this shop the 4 times I stopped by. The man behind the counter was rude. Even if their prices are lower it’s worth paying a little extra at other shops for good customer service. The fat guy is terrible at business and DOES NOT belong in sales.
Old Alaska take it for what you will..
I don’t know why some people had poor experiences, but mine was quite positive. I have enough firearms for 10 people. I enjoy the search and finding factory grips and the like to put a firearm back to stock. I was in the shop a week or two ago and asked if they had a set of factory wood N-frame S&W grips. They used to be common but now are getting hard to find. They had a set, switched out the grips and then asked if I needed anything else. Knowing they carry Wilson 1911 products I asked for a factory Colt Commander/Defender magazine and one came out from under the counter. I expected to be offered a Wilson. Both items you won’t fine at Bass Pro, or Cabela’s. Now here is the kicker for every one that thinks there prices are too high. They charged me a fair price. I probably would have paid more since the grips are so hard to find.
Extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. Excellent selection. People who have bad experiences here are probably overly sensitive hipster types with soft lotiony hands. This is without a doubt the best gun store in Anchorage. Its not a factory showroom or corporate designed gun room. Its a gun store, with all that entails.I would have no reservations doing business here or recommending it to others.
What a terrible place. I had a revolver transferred here from out of state and this fat man made me feel really bad about it. Were not here to help you save money. he says. why did they agree to do the transfer if they were going to give me crap about it? He bad talked his fellow employees Idiots! and handled my firearm ruffly and dangerously. He also gave me crap about not having a knife on me, like it was any of his concern. Easily one of the worst displays of customer service in my entire life. I will not return there for any reason. I do not recommend this place to anyone, stay away and go somewhere else.
The good: I received attention right away when I entered the door.I got to handle, and dryfire ( with permission) several dozen guns in a short period of time.I purchased a gun that they did not have in stock and received it a few weeks later. The not so good:yes, the fat man is inappropriately condescending, both in person and on the phone. When asking him questions, he admitted I dont shoot guns, I sell themThis was my first experience there, Ill try another place or two around town before I go back, simply because of the condescending guy.but then again.....I did get to see and handle a lot of guns in a short period of time.Whenever I went into mountain view sports, I couldnt get the guy behind the counter to stop telling hunting stories for a second to show my anything, when I was the only one in the store.....so.....is polite behavior important to you?.......getting to handle a lot of weapons in a short period of time?.....Im still thinking about it myself.....but am going elsewhere for my next, just to check out some new ones I have not been in.owners: when someone walks in the front door, its a lifetime customer for you to loose
Great place to buy guns, ammo and accessories. These guys have the knowledge, the guns and great prices. Best price in town for the last gun I bought and the staff was outstanding, helping me select exactly what I needed.
The selection at GNG is better than some places and the prices seem to be comparable to even some of the big box stores. I like going here because the customer service is much better than other places. Everyone I have talked to there is knowledgeable and gets you in to something that you will enjoy.
Great people, great place to get just about anything you need for shooting of any kind.
I bought my 9mm Sig Sauer from here and the staff was very helpful in finding me exactly what I was looking for. I give 4 stars because while they have a great selection and customer service you will likely have to purchase extras elsewhere.
After buying my first NEW pistol I was going between several shops in town to find a specific holster. The big guy behind the counter was nice enough to test fit it with one of the display models after I asked. But after asking what I payed (I told him that I saved a couple hundred compared to their price) he began quizzing me on the pistols features. I knew enough, but he talked down about the place I purchased the gun from for not telling me information I easily read in the manual later. Other enthusiasts in my circle also say to avoid the big guy and I agree.
They have plenty of guns and loyal old customers but they tend to run off new customers, the big guy turned me off he fails to realize he isnt the authority on guns. He needs to more attentive and listen to his customers, bringing in new customers means building a repore, treating them like crap because they arent purchasing a 2k handgun isnt good for business in the long run.
I would patronize another store before Great Northern Guns their staff should be in a different line of work . With that said Id rather pay more elsewhere than ever stop in there again.
Rural alaska fav. Gun store
Ive visited Great Northern Guns on several occasions. They have a good selection of guns, depending on your interest. Ive come across several older firearms that appeal to me in particular (old Sakos and Winchesters). Ive found that their prices are rather competitive compared to the big names that have recently moved into Anchorage like Cabelas and Bass Pro. I have no complaints about the customer service, I have always found them to be friendly and knowledgeable and easy to converse with. I would highly recommend Great Northern Guns to anyone in the area.
Good music and good guns. Bought a Glock 19X. Very reasonable price. Very knowledgeable staff
I like the atmosphere and the selection! I purchased a Glock from them recently and the process was pleasant, I called and shopped all of Anchorage and the valley and the prices where competitive. As far as the big guy I didnt have any problems.
I was very pleasently surprised by the excellent service I received over the phone and then in the store. The staff was helpful, knowledgable, and eager to answer my questions. They did some research on a pistol I left on consignment as well. I recommend this store without hesitation.
Awesome and helpful staff, and they have a store cat! Very cool
Great selection ruined by a routinely inhospitable atmosphere. I want to like Great Northern Guns because its a small local business, but every time I interact with certain members of the staff, I end up wishing Id gone somewhere else. The owner needs to take a good long look at his staff and then cut out the bad fat.
Its quite obvious, the heavy employee has one of 2 things going for him;a picture of the owner with a goator hes related to the owners wife.otherwise he would not be working at Great Northern Gunson the Gun side, good prices, and good inventory.Ive bought a handful of guns there, this is truly a gun shop.
Prices are very high and also dishonest a glock 20 gen 4 normally runs about 550.00 they have it priced at 669.00 and the tag says the retail is 729.00. To not only over price merchandise but to claim its normally more expensive is not only dishonest its insulting aswell. However they have a great selection and service just be aware there are places with much better prices if they arent willing to move on the price.
If zero stars were an option, I would put that. Whoever lets that soon to be Coronary artery disease having fat POS work there needs to have his head checked. I walked in with 10K in cash knowing exactly what items I wanted to buy and knowing they had all 5 firearms. I took a few minutes to glance around the store seeing if anything else would catch my eye when the fat boy decided I had looked around long enough said telling me what you are looking for is easier than looking, I replied Im looking just to look he replied this is not a museum, its a business. I gave him a smile and walked out with my 10K. I spend between 10 and 20 thousand in firearms, ammo, parts every single year, but never again will that money be spent here thanks to that fat boy. Once I hear news that he is fired, I might think about going back.
Its a decent place, but the Fat Guy has to be the rudest SOB Ive ever dealt with. I would give it a higher rating if it wasnt for the Fat Guy. Otherwise, the other staff members were always professional and friendly.
Great Northern Guns is above anything else: a gun store. they dont carry too many accessories, alternatives or gimmicks. It is a place that you can find anything from a $125 youth bolt action .22 to a $25,000 Winchester that Joe keeps in his private stash. Ive read the reviews about The Fat Guy and have dealt with him for years. Ive seen him be short with obnoxious, entitled or argumentative customers; but NEVER with genuine, sincere people regardless of their experience level. For those who havent had the opportunity to speak with him on a good interaction- DO SO: he is a virtual encyclopedia (those are books of facts and figures for you youngsters) of firearms knowledge and Ive seen him steer a few fools away from making a firearm purchase to their detriment. Just be straight with him and understand that he fields over 300 customers a day across the counter and/or on the phone and a large percentage of them are demanding and demeaning themselves. Great Northern Guns is an awesome shop and a great place to to purchase guns & ammunition. If youre looking for friend to spend time with and make you feel better; I suggest the Animal Shelter or the personal adds.
First class gun shop. Knowledgeable and friendly staff
Went to buy a gun for the first time and was helped by a friendly staff member and plan to buy more from them
Great guys, good prices, will buy again from therethey have everything and love the cat on the counter
Decent prices but poor/rude service.
Great selection and knowledgeable staff. Dont bring your BS here, youll get called on it.
Hit or Miss: It sounds like it really depends on who youre talking to when you walk in. I would agree the atmosphere is a little dark upon first image. If you make your way to this shop, speak with Jeff. Great guy hands down. I walked in, looked around. upon doing so, Jeff asked me if I needed help. I told him what I was looking for. My wallet was intent on throwing money down on a Beretta Px4 Storm .45cal pistol. He then asked me what I was using it for. I told him it was for follow-through shots on a bear for protection in case the first round or two didnt work, while hunting. He then explained to me the dynamics and effectiveness of calibers and grains, and how the dimensions and velocity of the bullet are the key to these big furries. He tried to get me to buy a Glock 10mm, yet I was a fan of the Beretta design. So, he suggested the 40.mm Beretta had more penetration power than the .45 beretta. He also went in depth in pointing out some of the smaller details of the different pistols.Again... Its hit or miss I believe. If you spend a minute with Jeff (has an arm that seems to be restricted in the mobility aspect) you will appreciate his customer service. Hes honest and nice. He even through in a couple cheap free things for me and rounded down the price of the pistol ammunition.Aside from that, gave me the history on how the world was introduced to the Glock 10mm. Great guy! just speak to Jeff. very personable and understanding.
Knowledgeable, friendly and good prices. Would go back.
I bought a AR- magazine from them. The spring broke the first time I loaded it. They said they would get me a new one 4 months later nothing... It is not the money but the point that I never got to use it.In ALASKA your word is your bond, these guys are liars and could care less about you once they have your money.
As we try to call to get assistance on a firearm we received for our customer here I was told We are so busy I can not help you, call back later and hangs up. No Customer Service
Shopped for 20 years.
All the employees are very knowledgable and helpful
There are a couple individuals there they could do without and be a better business.
They will not let you order a gun offline and have it shipped to their store even if you get a better price online if they have the gun
Horrible customer service. They will not receive shipments from gun manufacturers or other locations because they want to sell you one of their guns.
This is so nice and very beautiful
Strange personnel. Not something you want to interact with; trust me. Its dangerous to allow abrupt people to handle/sell firearms. Stay away!
Customer service is terrible he was extremely condescending.
Knowledgeable staff
So while everybody else in town has raised their prices on ammunition to something crazy.... these guys HAVENT, and because of that I will make sure I check these guys first when Im looking for something from now on.THANK YOU
Like guns? This is the place.
Terrible service
Classic gun shop
