Wonderfully decorated within a clean environment.Female waitresses tucking in their tops and adjusting bras at the side of the bar was a little unnerving however service from the manager was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary meal. We were overcharged and took a month to reply to our email complaint but we would still recommend this restaurant!!
This breakfast was fabulous. It really was such a positive experience :-)A quiet Sunday morning before some geocaching in the area. Very tasty breakfast with just the best service we could have wanted. A lovely interior fit out and a view across the market square.Well definitely return. This is exactly what Retford should be about. 🤩
Lockdown doesnt have to be uncivilized! Absolutely 100% recommend Spencers on the Square Grazing boards, from their new Take Out menu. An excellent delicious selection.I believe the Focaccia is from the Saucy Pizza Co, so its wonderful to be supporting 2 local businesses. And! You can get take out cocktails too! Sophisticated take out ...perfect!
Absolutely amazing. For drinks and two delicious courses for two our bill was £58. Very reasonable. Stunning decor, beautiful food. The staff are very friendly and professional all smartly dressed and well mannered. Live music which was excellent and just the right volume. Great choice of drinks too. Would definitely book here again!
The staff was helpful in making the choice of meals. Service was pretty fast. Good choice of beverages. The steak was not good tough, more resembling tire than meat in texture. Everything else was fine: pleasant atmosphere, nice interior, cozy, clean. But overall bad experience for a restaurant with such a high rating.
Absolutely out of this world! The best dinner, service, drinks me and my partner have had for years and years. The rib eye steak was cooked to perfection, the best Ive had in my life.Friendly staff with a stunning venue make this the place to go for a great meal.Thoroughly impressed and will be retuning monthly from now on.Thank you so much for a beautiful evening guys, we enjoyed it so much.
Best Breakfast I have had in a long time, bacon cooked to perfection, soft meat and crispy fat, tasty Lincolnshire Sausages and black pudding. Staff incredibly friendly and helpful, great way to start the day.
After New ownership this place has exceeded all expectations. Quick and polite service, amazing food and a lovely atmosphere. The Bar staff (waitress) wasnt quite sure what she was doing in regard to the drinks they had behind the bar but maybe she was just new!
Had a great meal last weekend, really nice food and great service, advice given on the wine which was also delicious, we will be going again soon. Also plan to go and check out the lunch menu. 10 out of 10 :-)
Quality brekkie. And the service was great. Go for a bloody Mary... you know you want to 👍
Went for cocktails after a meal out. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff. Some of the drinks werent made quite to my liking, but I know every bar will do them slightly differently. Still an Overall good experience.
Saturday lunch and what a treat. Beautiful decor, great choice of food and drink. Staff were lovely and friendly. We will be back!
I can not recommend spencers enough the menu the food the ambiance, the staff, highly trained & professional yet friendly and down to earth, really really made us feel so special my daughter and I … we had brunch there and the food looks and tastes as if it’s out of a top end gourmet magazine! We went twice in one day.…cocktails are out of this world especially the lemon cheesecake which taste better than any cheesecake I have ever had around the world! Thrice fried chips with truffle and Parmesan for a snack it’s so unique and tasty. All the staff right up to the manager is as dazzling as the chandeliers, A unique view through what looks to be a large mirror of the chefs in the kitchen made you feel as if you’re on a film set.Incredibly ..spencers is dog friendly and even has a jar of snacks for your dog and water bowls a plenty, if you are lucky enough to live in Retford this is a real jewel in the crown of the town
Very slow service drinks order taken twice. Food took to long to arrive considering we were the only ones inside. People sat outside got served quicker. Dog friendly? asked for a dog bowl was told we only have one and its in use outside
Stunning interior, lovely friendly staff, excellent food and the beer was spot on 👌🍻
Excellent food and great service/people. Highly recommended
Friendly staff, lovely surroundings, freshly cooked food ... would recommend wholeheartedly.
Very friendly and professional staff. Cocktails and food was excellent. Would recommend the Baby Ribs!
Went to lunch here with a friend and it was amazing the food was great and the staff were amazing, they created such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Would deffinately recommend going
Friendly staff, willing to make cocktails that werent on the menu
Went on a Sunday and the menu was restricted to roasts but this was not made clear on website . However, the food was really nice. Service from younger staff a bit hesitant but generally good.
Beautiful setting with exceptional service food is fabulous, definitely will be returning again
Superb decor. Very attentive staff. Reasonably priced. Would visit again.
Nice staff fresh tasty food
Lovely food. Wonderful decor. Thanks for looking after us so well today.
Great service, lovely food and nice atmosphere
There is still an upside to lockdown. Just had a Sunday dinner delivered to my door. The quality of the ingredients was excellent. We enjoyed the meal so much we are planning our next order. I would definitely recommend ordering a takeaway, not only is the quality excellent, and the meal was delicious but there was plenty to eat. Restaurant quality food served up in your own home, what a lovely treat.
Very nice lunch. The service is very efficient friendly and pleasant . Would recommend.
Great staff & top class food. Well done.
Great place for beer and food and lovely atmosphere
We ate at Spencers on Friday evening, the food, service and attention to detail was exceptional.
Really good food and excellent staff
Just had takeaway was absolutely amazing cheese board bang on thank you
. Can’t believe you now have to pay extra per person to sit in the area with tablecloths !!! it was a nice meal but unfortunately only Luke warm
Fantastic place and very kind and positive staff. I just had a coffee which was very tasty and locally roasted. The atmosphere and decor is modern yet somehow cosy, despite being a large open space. Would come back more if I lived closer!
Sunday lunch. Veg undercooked. Disappointed overall. Waitress apologised.
Beautiful place loved the Chandeliers.. Noticed it also Dog 🐶 friendly for such a posh place 👍My Mum and I had Fish and Chips but it wasnt what youd normally expect..As it also had curry sauce, mushy peas, homemade Tartar sauce 😋 plus Bread and butter.. The Fish was delicious not your frozen stuff plus the chips were triple cooked and to die for 👍 😁Didnt have room for pudding we were to full..Definitely will be going again.. 10/10 👍
Just visiting Retford and popped in for breakfast. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The food was very good, we had bacon and sausage sandwiches and poached eggs on toast. All was cooked beautifully and I left feeling very satisfied and stuffed! I recommend a visit.
Fabulous breakfast, served in elegant surroundings, with attentive service, you couldnt want for more. Dont miss out 😁
Had been recommended by a friend so called in for afternoon tea. The premises are spectacular with the most amazing crystal chandeliers. It was very quiet when we arrived so we took a seat and waited, and waited, and waited. No one acknowledged our presence, not even a smile, we could have been invisible. After sitting for a while we left for less sophisticated surroundings where there was a chance of a smile and a cuppa!
Popped in on the spur of the moment for a cappuccino and tea. Premises smart and clean staff very friendly and efficient. We had a seat overlooking the market square and had a very restful half hour. Recommended.
Reasonable prices, & the new refurbed interior is very attractive. Friendly service & good Coronavirus precautions.
Very nice food. Lovely atmosphere. Dog friendly. Wonderful Gluten free options. A true 5 star find.UPDATE.... Having decided that we loved Spencers on the square so much we have booked our annual holidaysoo as we can go back again and again.Sarah and Matt Caz and Scampi xxx
We called at Spencers for a late breakfast. Unfamiliar with the area we just thought it looked like a nice building. We were right about that, the interior is lovely too, but it also turned out to be a lovely place to eat. The food was perfectly cooked, well presented but not over-fussy and very tasty. Service was wonderful, just the right amount of contact (theres nothing worse than being asked if everythings ok, every two minutes) and nothing was too much trouble for them. First class establishment, well definitely be back next time were in the area. Highly recommend a visit.
Espresso martini and other cocktails worth trying while you eat. 😋
Normally very good food but last visit 5 weeks ago the curry was flavour less and very bland. Nice coffee though.
Breakfast meal was nice and tasty. However the service requires improvement. Breakfast arrived but the cutlery came after the food. The venue was cold. On the positive side staff were friendly and the venue is nicely decorated.
Things seemed very disorganised. The menu promised to us when booking was not available, staff in the kitchen seemed very agitated, and one of our partys order was missed out completely. Some people had good food, but my roast was dry and those ordering the mushroom pasta complained it was very bland with little mushroom flavour present. Hopefully we just got a bad day, but I will not be hurrying back.
Service was quick, food was great but probably a bit more than youd want to pay for a standard lunch. Theres some decent vegetarian and vegan options on the menu though, had the vegetarian fish and chips which is halloumi based, which was nice. Better food than most other places you can go in Retford for lunch.
Went for Daughter in laws baby shower. 20 odd people to be served and food was lovely. Well presented, hot and tasty. Staff worked hard. Will definitely go again for a meal.
Lovely surrounding. Staff were really friendly however the was no bubble in your squeak, mash with a few chopped up veg does not constitute a good bubble and squeak! Main was really good but again the creame brulee was the wrong consistency with a small hot spot in the middle. Try leaving the sugar off until ready to serve.
Went in for Sunday lunch as a last minute decision. Was was seated and served quickly, with attentive staff. We were accommodated very well with gluten free options for every meal on the set menu, which was flavourful and plentiful. Highly recommended.
Extremely polite and helpful staff. Roaring log fire on a cold day and great food. Nuff said.
Lovely food, nice for lunch sat outside in the market square on a nice day. Prices are a little high but quality is good! Drinks selection is great but be prepared to pay for them compared to other pubs in town.
Great menu, I had a vegan lasagne with sweet potato fries. Really nice. Lots of options on the menu :)
Call in for hot chocolate after long rides, staff are pleasant and the food looks lovely, so much so that we are planning to eat there very soon. The only downside is dogs, well behaved dogs are fine but when you get one constantly yapping loudly the entire time it gets annoying .
I Took my Partner for her Birthday Party. All the Staff were pleasant. Excellent Service and Excellent food. Thank you, we will be back very soon.
Nice place. Attentive staff. On the expensive side. Over £4 a pint
Fantastic menu for coeliac vegans & vegetarians. Chef was very accommodating and came to talk to me to ensure I was happy with meal (gf). Comfortable, clean, pleasant eatery.
Just called in with 8 people including my 85 year old mum in a wheelchair and was told the chefs have closed the kitchen early. We had looked this afternoon on the website where it says its open until 10 so had planned a visit then. Inside the menu says serving Sunday dinner until 9pm. If the chefs are closing early it should be posted on the website so people dont have a wasted journey.
I have been to Spencers twice now, both times the food has been very good, I have taken the wait as having the food freshly cooked rather than it being freshly defrosted. The interior has a modern style about itwhilstlooking out over the square allows people watching. The waiters were all pleasant and friendly. So a good central lace to eat and drink when you are passing through.
Excellent, friendly service in opulent surroundings, with great food and wines. Perfect for a coffee or a night out with friends. One of the best places in Retford in an historic building. Highly recommended!
Excellent food, good coffee, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere.... and dog friendly (water bowls and dog biscuits behind the door). Perfect place to sit and watch the world go by.
Such a great place! Excellent vegan and vegetarian options, staff are always lovely and the fire is so nice to sit beside in the winter!
Patience pays off; freshly prepared, good quality food, and great service.
Good food. Helpful staff. Excellent range of choices for Coeliac and vegan diets.
Really pleasant staff. Made us feel very welcome - and made a fuss of the dogs!Nice lunch: sandwiches and carbonara. Nice beer too.
Lovely food, comfortable surroundings, friendly staff and you can even take your pooch in as well. Highly recommended.
Lovely atmosphere. Great food. Service needs a tweak here and there. Then be 5 stars
Really nice relaxing place that welcomes dogs and I e joyed cuddling every dog that came in. Nice coffee and friendly staff
Stunning! Fantastic! Absolutely gorgeous! All descriptions my family used after our meal there. We had a table for 22 which we had pre ordered food from the A la Carte and fixed menus for. Everything was done just right. Drinks from the bar as we needed, meals prepared and served as ordered. Really great menu options including kids, vegetarian and gluten free! All of that topped with excellent customer service!
Beautiful pub great staff their was a lad singing he was great i could have sat all night and listened to him i will go back
Great bar great food great staff central location to the square in Retford.very accommodating in regards to food orders and drink orders.Open throughout the day too late evening.Parking available close to this location
Nice to be able to have a pint with your dog and they even brought my dog a treat
Lovely pub. Nice food. Great atmosphere. A little expensive but over all we love it
We have been here a few times now. Today five of us had various meals and drinks. All were first class, service was great, and our dog was warmly welcomed. Thanks.
Was a quiet visit for a Saturday, as everyone I suspect was watching football. Friendly efficient service...great coffee in great surroundings. Recommended 😀
Myself and some of my family had a wonderful christmas day at Spencers food and service was perfect thoroughly enjoyed our day thank you to charles kate and all the staff for a lovely day I think it was our 4th christmas day with you xx
Lovely place to sit and chill and enjoy a good coffee. The Spencers tea is lovely and would be even better if you served it with a China cup instead of the cups you use at the moment. Good friendly service.
Great food with a lively atmosphere and Geat live music
Good sunday lunch, not cheap but good. Doggy pub aswell.
We booked a table here for a family meal (8 adults, 2 children plus a baby), the setting is beautiful and the Christmas decorations were lovely. We preordered all the meals bar two from the Christmas menu and to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The starters were okay, but the mains from the Christmas menu were atrocious. Three of the four steaks arrived and instead of being medium rare they were all well done. We asked for the peppercorn sauce which was supposed to come with them, and by the time it arrived the steaks were cold. The gnocchi was stuffed with something purple and not properly cooked. We had to ask where the fourth steak was and were told this was on its way. The vegetables that came with the turkey were undercooked, and it wasnt possible to cut the roast potatoes. We spoke to a waitress who got the manager, she apologised and took the steaks back to the kitchen to be re-made. The steaks returned about 15 minutes later, blue. The elusive fourth steak also appeared at this point, nearly half an hour after it was supposed to have arrived also blue. When we brought the new steak issues up with the manager she was very apologetic and said she would get the owner. It has to be said that the manager was very helpful throughout our short stay, we didnt get her name but she was the one member of staff who appeared to actually care. The waitresses were blasé, probably due to not knowing how to handle the situation rather than through choice. At this point a harrased looking gentleman stalked through the dining area and in to the kitchen. This we learned was the owner when he came to talk to us. We were then told in no uncertain terms that we were incorrect; our steaks were perfect first time and were fine this time (despite being two opposite ends of the cooked scale), the vegetables were al-dente (there is a difference between al dente and raw, we know this) and that he had served 130 covers the night before with no complaints. The lovely manager suggested moving to dessert and leaving the mains but this wasnt an option for us as we had really had enough by now. In the end we paid £55 as we had already paid the deposit and were charged a notional amount for drinks. The two meals that werent from the Christmas menu were very nice and we were left feeling that the Christmas menu was of the stack it high, sell it not-so-cheap, variety. We were very disappointed as this is the only time weve been able to get our family together this year. The location and decor are fantastic and the manager very professional, but the owners manner and behaviour was shameful. This coupled with the lack of attentiveness (or skill?) in the kitchen has lead to a 1* review, and the loss of custom for a reataurant that could be fantastic, but is medicore at best.
Cant fault Spencers. Lovely food, great service & dog friendly. Goureous Veggie breakfast. Never disappoints 👍
Perfect love it all great staff keep safexxx
Food seriously nice, service good and surroundings stately
Lovely place. Very chilled. Good selections.
No problems. Served quickly. Not very busy.
Not sure what the copied response below is all about and how rude of you to insult a customer who hasnt said anything by mentioning a cheap carvery! Shocking behaviour from a business so I certainly wont be returning!
What an incredible venue... great food, great drink and wonderful staff! Fantastic atmosphere in here whatever time of day!
Went for Sunday lunch, chose the Roast sandwiches as full lunch is too big and too expensive. It said on menu two roast potatoes and gravy on the side. It arrived with a small bowl of crisps from a packet. It didnt come on a plate. Can on an Art house Wooden chopping board. But board was small, sandwich large and cumbersome. Very difficult and frustrating to eat carefully while playing plate Tetris.Bread too crunchy/dry. Meat average and too cold.£40 for 4 sandwiches and drinks. A real waste of money.
Excellent meal staff were excellent a good night
Fantastic place, but as Im from Yorkshire I expect more on my plate lol, quite expensive but worth it for the quality, friendly service all round
Pretty good Sunday lunch/dinner. Good size portions and good service
Food lovely and well presented however service was a little slow
Really lovely atmosphere and great food
Been a few times now, good for families as it has a very safe family friendly menu, great with kids. Very tolerant LOL!
Waiter only brought 2 menus for 3 people stating he needed them for other people even though very few people in there. He didnt tell us what was off the menu until we started to order. No Lamb shank. Was taking drinks order then said we dont have any Cider only bottled. Asked for Becks, no we dont have that. Decided not to eat there after all and to move on to a proper restaurant. Ordered coffee and said we wouldnt be eating after all. After 20 min decided to leave as coffee had still not arrived. Very poor, will not be going there again.
