This was my 1st tattoo. Chris did a great job helping me feel comfortable. I gave him some general designs, he took my ideas created a beautiful design. The shop was moving locations in between my sessions, but they managed to keep everything spotless during the move. Already recommended this spot to a few coworkers. Thanks again Chris.

I go my tattoo in December 2016.Absolute tattoo newbie here. I went to Laughing Hyena because it had excellent reviews online and happened to be close to my apartment, and it did not disappoint. I worked with Isaac, who was friendly, down-to-earth, and knew exactly what he was doing. He drew up my design in two minutes and my tattoo was done in another two minutes. Since he knew this was my first tattoo, he gave me very clear instructions and advice for caring for it. He also guided me along in the tattoo process, emphasizing the sanitary measures Laughing Hyena always takes, and giving me tips for what to look for in a high quality tattoo shops for future reference.I was a bit nervous about getting my first tattoo and wanted to make sure I was going to an establishment that took their work and their customers seriously. I found both of those qualities in Laughing Hyena and would definitely go there again/recommend it to others.

I did tons of research on tattoos and studios before I finally settled on Hyena Tattoos, with Chris as my artist. This was my first tattoo, so I really appreciated how they offer a free consultation ahead of the appointment. It gave me a chance to meet the artist and discuss my ideas. And, looking back, even though I dont think I described what I wanted very well, Chris somehow created something totally unique for me. When I came in day of, we worked together to tweak the design until it was exactly what I wanted. The studio is clean, and Chris made sure to walk me through each step of the process while he was preparing me for the tattoo. I could go on and on, but Im really happy with how this experience went and Id definitely come back again!!

My friend and I came here for our second and third tattoos, respectively. We came in for a consult with Doctor Z in May and made appointment for today (June 12). We didnt see our art until we arrived but he didnt disappoint! I selected a cross-stitch design, which isnt an easy thing to do. He was honest about how this was only his second one in ten years of tattooing but he did an amazing job. He had four options for me in terms of design and waited patiently while I hemmed and hawed before deciding. So thrilled; he definitely has found a life-long customer in me. As others have mentioned, the shop is cash only but is close to many banks in Columbia Heights. Ignore the purple in the photo, thats just the stencil.

Had an all around great experience here. Very professional and responsive staff. Dr. Z was my artist and did perfect work based on the description I gave him. We met for about 30 minutes and discussed and then I was scheduled for about 5 weeks later. A week before the appointment, they called and said I could come in early due to a cancellation.There is a high demand for this place and everything is by appointment so you will have to be patient. But it was well worth it. Friendly staff. Clean and welcoming environment. Great music playing too. Definitely would recommend.

Ive been a client of Dr. Z for several years. He is my one and only artist. THATS how good he is. Very open minded and polite. Very interesting to talk to, as he is quite knowledgeable of many things. Very intelligent. As for the parlor, its super clean and the staff are very friendly. I highly recommend this tattoo shop to everyone! The photo of my chest tattoo is on his Instagram. It was an 11 hour tattoo! Ouch! But I absolutely love it. So proud of my artist. ❤️

I have gotten a septum piercing, a small tattoo, and a medium sized tattoo from here with a good amount of detail. Both Dr. Z and Isaac worked on my tattoos (Dr. Z did my small tattoo, and Isaac did my other tattoo) and Rachel pierced my septum. I love this shop. My tattoos and septum healed perfectly. Definitely would recommend!

I spent an enjoyable 3ish hours with Dr. Z while he worked on my extraordinary forearm tattoo. The entire process, from consult to design to tattooing was highly professional. The location is easy to get to and parking is plentiful even though it’s in DC. Dr. Z himself is the utmost professional: approachable, kind, skilled and genuinely enthusiastic. I had never walked past Laughing Hyena before-- its a little hidden, but more of a well-kept secret feel than sketch. ;) The inside is clean and all instruments used with me were in sterile packaging. The whole crew is friendly and helped me with the flexible appointment I needed from consulting to finish. I highly recommend Laughing Hyena for first-timers or anyone needing a new shop (and Isaac in particular-- check out his portfolio!)... I will definitely return here for future work.

Great place and bedside manner. Been here twice for 2 different tattoos with different artists. They are very, very good about keeping everything sanitary and make sure you know how to care for your tattoo afterwards. They tell you and give you a copy of written instructions. My brother wanted to get a simple, small tattoo (just the outlines of something). I accompanied him to the Laughing Hyena during their walk-in hours where the personnel said it was too intricate and required an appointment.. We were puzzled and surprised because after all, the pic my brother wanted was very simple and small. The shop was empty and they just opened, so its not that they were extremely busy or just about to close either.The same day, few hours later, we walked in another near by tattoo parlor that had walk-in hours as well, and my brother was able to get in immediately. The guy serving him checked and printed the picture while my brother was filling in the paperwork. Inking time was tops 25 minutes, we were in and out of there within 35mins.I’m still not sure why the staff at Laughing Hyena thought that the pic was intricate. I suppose our faces or money just wasn’t good there. I hence rate them one star for showing us the door for basically no reason.

I got my ninja turtle by Isaac and my dragons eye by Dr Z. I will be wearing these tattoos for the rest of my life with nothing but pride. the work is truly amazing as long as I live in the DC area Isaac will be my cartoon tattoo artist and doctors he will do all my dragons.These two guys are true professionals there line work is clean and consistent theyre shading and color saturation is some of the best that Ive ever seen. They truly enjoy the art theyre creating and want to make every piece unique. Theyre both extremely well versed in all forms of art not just tattooing.If youre looking for some of the best quality work possible you should definitely check these guys out.

I had a really good experience here! The booking process was easy and while the artist I went with (Dolphin) was booked for about a month, it was totally worth it. I got a manga cap of Sakura Haruno from Naruto (Shippuden), and everything was copied perfectly. It looks just like someone took the book and pressed the panel into my arm! An exact copy.Staff were all friendly and helpful. This place books quickly, so definitely make an appointment well in advance of when you want your work done. When I went in (early December, 2019), they didnt have a piercer on-staff but were actively looking for one.

Ive never been to a tattoo shop that was so professional and welcoming! Ive gotten most of my work done by Isaac, the owner. He really took the time to sit with me and talk through my ideas each time. I love all of my tattoos, they are beautiful pieces of art and very reasonably priced. I got a cover up tattoo from Dr. Z and I couldnt be happier. I wanted to wait a few months to see how I felt after some time with the new tattoo, and I love it even more now than I did when I first got it. It wasnt necessarily a particularly difficult cover up, but the challenge was doing it without taking away from the whimsy and overall feel of the tattoo, and he absolutely nailed it. Its a somewhat large piece, so I admittedly was a little nervous, because theres no changing what I have now, but he seriously nailed it. He took some artistic liberties with it that I personally feel makes the tattoo even better than what I came in wanting, and I just cant express my gratitude enough. This is one of, if not my first ever, review Ive left on anything, but I felt after the job he did, letting others know about how well my experience went was the least I could do. Not to mention, hes a really really nice guy and the price was incredibly reasonable. I found this place on google, went there because they had such a high rating, and Im tell yall, its deserved.

O my goodness you guys, we need to talk about how great Dr. Z and the Laughing Hyena is!! I got a larger piece on my left forearm, and I am beyond excited that I get to look at my tattoo every day for the rest of my life. It doesnt even really look like a tattoo its that good! He took my idea and delivered exactly what I had in mind and then some. The healing process has been better than any tattoo I have had because there is basically no skin damage. Really I cant even describe how happy I am; I will be returning for at least two more larger pieces and I am convincing my husband to finally get the half sleeve hes been wanting too.Seriously, go here!! Pricing couldnt be better for the quality, theres really cheap garage parking right up the street, and the location is so urban funky. They are cash only though, so keep that in mind or youll have to walk about a block or two for an ATM.

I would give 3 stars - 1 lost for the prices bring in the high side for basic replacement jewelry and 1 lost for the lack of bike parking posts in the lots of curb space between lamp posts (and the no bike symbols on their sign), but the piercer from 3 months ago was really great with giving the right balance of free advice and then paid-for help so its up to 4 .

Ive gone to Laughing Hyena Tattoos a couple of times and had work done by Isaac. The shop is a chill/mellow, clean environment with friendly staff. Isaac does beautiful work.. one of my sessions was a cover up and I was so nervous because the piece I covered up was horrible but the outcome was amazing. I get complimented numerous times daily. So its only right I share that Isaac and everyone at Laughing Hyena are great!! When Im in DC & need my ink fix, Isaac is the man.

If I could leave 0 stars, I would. Emma is constantly being verbally abused by Isaac. He is SO RUDE. He stated my design was too small even though it is quite simple and standard. I liked his portfolio so I wanted him to do my tattoo but instead (even though he was very much so free) he made Raff do it. Also, they charged me 100$ for this SIMPLE AF 1-color outline tattoo. Not only was Isaac literally the rudest person ever, they would only let one of my friends behind the chain fence they use to separate the lobby from the tattoo chairs. Also, they didnt gauze wrap my tattoo--only saran wrapping it which came off within 10 minutes.Also, this place accepts cash only which is bullshit. There is a 60$ minimum charge so dont get a simple or small tattoo here. In case you cant tell, I will never be coming back here.

Dr. Z and Isaac are brilliant artists. I constantly get compliments and comments on the work Z had done on my arms. They are professional and are worth every cent. A tattoo is a lifetime investment and these guys understand as well as take pride in that.

I have been going to issac since I was about 17 years old. My best work has come from him. There is one tattoo I hated and he could not do a cover up but he added beautiful art work around it and has more to do. It coming together making me forget the ugly tattoo I hated (which he did not do). Very professional clean quick and friendly. I get compliments all the time.

I got some crooked nipple piercings by a very cocky piercer. The ring literally comes out nearly at the tip of the nipples as opposed to the base. I was very dissatisfied... lets not even talk about the actual service, arrogance, or the fact that 2 people walked right by as I was getting my nipples pierced. I hate them, but I paid $80 for them so I better learn to love them.

I would hope a shop could plan events better than this past one. waste of time and energy 👎🏽.

Ive had several really positive experiences with this business and the people who work there. The first time I walked in with my girlfriend on a whim and we were greeted and set up by Issac who suggested Dr. Z execute our arm bands. Dr. Z did an incredible job -- we get compliments ALL the time. I have no clue how he drew those lines so straight. My gf went back for a mandala design that is incredible.Ive also been in looking for septum jewelry and the staff spent time with me discussing my preferences and jewelry availability. I didnt feel pressured to purchase anything, but ended up walking out with two different rings.The last time my gf was looking for advice on gauging her ears and the staff was super helpful and honest. No over-promising or over-selling.I cant imagine why this group of people would have any bad reviews. My next tattoo will be definitely be done there, and we recommend it to all our friends!
