Spent $26 yesterday on a variety of different pastries. They had to be several days old and were honestly terrible. Super unimpressed
Fine Sweet Shoppe is the bakery inside historic Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. They sell cakes, cookies, ice cream, coffee, sandwiches and so many other items. Its easy to get overwhelmed, but heres what I recommend:1) Ice cream- it doesnt compare to nearby Jenis, Captain Cookie or Moorenkos, but for the price and portion, its perfect for kids. My toddler loves their strawberry ice cream.2) Cakes- their chocolate cake is pretty good!3) Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies- they are small, but a good snack. If you can avoid it, dont order their chocolate croissant. Truly, its the worst Ive had in the city.
With so many decadent pastries and pies to choose from, Im glad I bought the Caramel Apple Pie. It was fresh and baked that morning! Although it was a bit crumbly and loaded with crunchy walnuts, I enjoyed the apple filling. I wasnt a big fan of the Toll House Chocolate Chip cookie. I would skip it and save room for the pie! There are also a lot of great bakeries and cafes down the block and near Barracks Row like Spring Mills Breads and Shouk. So if youre looking for a gourmet pastry, its worth venturing out. Fine Sweets offers a larger variety and bulk quantity. Its great for grabbing a box of goodies to share and take home!
Have been buying their brownies over the past few years. Cooking issues these past few times. Burnt bottoms a few weeks ago. Went back today, not cooked, almost raw dough through all 3 brownies.
Possibly the worst bakery I ever been. I honestly dont know what people see in this place, and how it has survived for so long. I went there yesterday at lunch time and ordered 3 quintessential baked goods: The walnut brownies, the banana bread and red velvet cupcakes. All of which were basically not edible and definitely not worth your calories. They were incredibly dry, the frosting on the cupcake was super stiff.
Six bucks for a fully-loaded bagel piled high with cream cheese and smoked salmon? Done.
Hit or miss goods. I bought an oatmeal cookie and a rugelach. Oatmeal cookie was tasty but that was the absolutely worst rugelach Ive ever eaten. They used the wrong type of pastry dough to make it. Ugh!
I prefer the normal farmers markets selections but Eastern Market has much broader hours and its convenient for the Hill. The fish vendors can spoil the interior if they have some smelly, old fish out - seems better lately but it was pretty unappealing for awhile.
Not to be missed! I love this - I was always here on the weekend. Great selection of jewelry, clothing, and fresh food items. Every Saturday and Sunday!
Tasteless aAmerican cakes and cookies. Nothing exciting. Need to look at French recipes and use better ingredients like real butter.
Best date bars ever especially the yellow softi one.
Great place to hang out on a nice afternoon - coffee, lunch, open air market - this place has it all.
Fresh food, and fun vendors.
A yearly tradition for me, every spring.
Great selection of reasonable prices
