Great Japanese selection of products. If you want to take out make sure you show up no later than 11 am for lunch and 5 pm for dinner otherwise everything will be gone.Never got food poisoning with their fish which is great. They bag the items really nicely.Parking can be treaky at peak hours.
Its all right. Limited fish selection. Deli is no good. Rolling hills Nijiya is much nicer. Non food items take too much space. Limited fresh food.
Good Japanese market if youre looking for something to cook it just food to go
Great selection of Japanese foods. Fresh fish, bento boxes, snacks, produce, and more. The special infusion macaroons are great, especially the lychee flavor.
Their bento is my all time favorite. So many snack choices as well.
Great selection and quick take out bentos for such a small store 👌
Nijiya is one of the few places i can reliably get good quality ingredients for japanese-style cooking. you need to be able to deal with reading labels in kanji, though.the store is on the cramped side and is often somewhat crowded.they have all the staples and a pretty good selection for all the major ingredients.
Good selection of locally grown organic vegetables, in addition to ready to cook and prepared foods. Smaller footprint than the south bay stores, but offset by reduced foot traffic for a faster shipping experience.Six foot distance markings are clearly set up outside the store, and safely roped off in the probate parking lot. As of 8/3, allowing limited numbers of shoppers in the store at a time, as well as shorter hours.
Great variety of take-out sushi, fresh sashimi, bento boxes at reasonable prices. Big selection of Japanese products: bottled seasonings for marinades, frozen Japanese foods, refrigerated (only place to buy Shiro/perilla leaves) and dried products/noodles. Prices are higher, but worth it. Mentioned by Namiko Chen, author of Just One Cookbook/Japanese cooking. Nijiya is my go-to whenever I’m in San Mateo.
Their fresh food they put out is always great and I love the variety.
Sushi-grade fish available here...clean, organized, friendly.. My new place for Japanese ingredients!
Great selection of Japanese essentials and my go to to get sashimi quality fish and Japanese produce - they even have fresh real wasabi!
Good place to get fresh fish and meat as well as a nice selection of snacks and seasonings!
Its a small grocery store, but theyve got all your essentials. I love the assortment of ready made meals. Its busy on weekends, but weekdays are the opposite.
Great place to buy Japanese goods. Today we were there to purchase bento boxes for lunch. They were great & this store is a larger store than the San Jose J-town store, so there is more variety of bento boxes & seemingly more Japanese grocery items in the store.
Whenever we crave sashimi, we will go to this place, around Bay Area we have some like this place and they all have best sashimi but this place my husband work around here so he stopped by to get some, always have fresh salmon sashimi that we want, 1 time we stopped by late to see what they have discounts but nothing we want left so if you want some sashimi better go early,
I love this place. I come here twice a month from Stockton for the onigiri, which is great, but their whole selection they have at the store is amazing.
Amazing food! I found some stuff here I found nowhere else. And some of the staff speaks more then 1 language, so its awesome communication.
Covid-19 review: A good place to get some japanese staples like soba, somen, udon, taiyaki, onigiri, sushi, mochi. They have limited the number of people inside, but you will definitely pass people in the aisles. Checkout lines are spaced and there are shields at the registers. If you bring your own bag you must fill it outside after you leave the store. (You can bring the baskets outside) It was not too busy when I went on Monday afternoon, although I did wait for a few minutes outside to maintain the capacity limit of customers inside.
8/2020-Bought 2 packages of sashimi-one variety (salmon, tuna squid) and the other whole salmon. All but the tuna were completely disgusting and foil smelling right out after opening. Had to throw away. 5 min to get home and not warm. 2019-Ready made sushi and rolls are reasonable price and pretty good tasting. Bigger selection of traditional mochi than expected. The seafood rolls ($10) were huge and fresh.
Good snacks, but place smelled like dead fish
They have the best sashimi quality seafood in this area♡ I also love their free magazines with plenty of recipes in it!!
Dont skip the beer section! 🍻👍
Great for getting Japanese groceries. Only con was there was a long line, although it did move pretty quickly
Great store personal very helpful
Local Japanese market with good sales on my favorite Japanese beers. The staff recognizes me and lets me know whats on sale. Very friendly in a tough industry. I like the easy parking and large store space versus the very cramped store in SF Japan Town. Produce section has a good variety and is very clean. Good stuff!!
Very narrow aisles, crowded store despite careful Covid-19 controls.
I love shopping here because they have a nice selection of food from Japan.
Good japanese selection but lacking on bulk products (vegetable oil is available only in small bottles, for example). Also selection of soy products seems limited to me, for example, there is only plain tofu with the exception of one. This being said, the fresh meat, poultry and fish selection is very good and high quality.
Japanese grocery store they have a variety of foods, clean and very organized.
Pricier than 99 Ranch Market, but one of the best places to pick up Japan specific ingredients and products that have multiple locations around the Bay. Their bento boxes are also rather good, and their own branded farmed products never disappoint (in particular their soy milk and soy sauce come to mind). The San Mateo location is not huge, but much easier to go to than say the San Francisco location, and they offer a decent selection of sake and shochu at the San Mateo location.
Small store but great, large selection of produce and goods. Prices are consistent with similar Japanese grocers.
The Japanese store is a bit small.Decent to-go sushi food.Authentic Japanese groceries on the pricy end. Premium white Rice was $30 for 15lbs.
Senior hours, thorough cleaning between customers and always a great selection
Food r good n freshService r good 2
We went here to get sushi. The quality was good for a grocery store and cost much less than going out. I will try the other 2 grocery stores that offer sushi in the are and compare.
Best place for Japanese food and beers
Lot of Japanese grocery selection and price is reasonable
Good selection of Japanese groceries
Fairly small; therefore small but interesting selection.
I love Nijiya Market SM, while small, it carries most of the Japanese goods I need.Everything from natto and organic miso to premade bentos. You wont get a huge selection of groceries but they carry many staples: goya, purple sweet potatoes, mushrooms, perfectly cut meat etc.Try to come in the afternoon before or after lunch to avoid lines.Staff is always very friendly and helpful.
Great selection of organic food, meat selection appeared fresh. You will love thier freezer section of imported foods.
Good spot for imported goods. The bento section has really dropped off in the last few years though. Dont go there expecting convenience store sushi like you find in Japan.
This nijiya location is very clean. Very well stocked. The staff are wonderful. And very quiet and lovely shopping experience. Great japanese groccery store!
Classic Asian market experience
Good place to buy sushi. Some merchandise overpriced.
Come to shop during early lunch time, if you want less crowds.
Always reliable, great food and snacks, and friendly staff. My only gripe is that they never brought back the cashew cookies. Simply the best!!
Love all the Japanese food selections there especially the bentos and sushi. They even give 20% discount after 5:00 pm for all cook food. The place is clean
A place that you can find everything
Great Japanese market! We like to pick up sushi lunch boxes and onigiri here, and recently ordered sushi party platters for Fathers Day that were excellent and very reasonably priced for the quality and quantity! The party platter menu is on the website and they recommend ordering at least a day ahead of time. It included a variety of sushi including many that our kids liked (inari sushi, California rolls, smoked salmon and avocado), and the fish is very fresh.I havent had a chance to slowly browse the store but they seem to have a little bit of every Japanese grocery essential you would want, from produce to beverages (including sake and wine), prepared foods, dry goods, and drugstore and kitchen items.During Covid-19 they have had a well-marked line outside with 6 ft spacing and are wiping down baskets and carts. Short wait to get into the store because they limit the number of customers. I felt very safe.
My go to Japanese Market
Very nice to-go section with plenty to choose from. Lots of great selection throughout the market as well.
There’s a limit on numbers of customers in the store due to COVID. They have good a variety of meats and I found them fresh and affordable. My favorite section is the bento area. They have over 10 kinds of Japanese ready to eat bentos. Super convenient and tasty! #japanesegroceries #bento #groceries
Nijiya is a small but mighty market with almost all the goods you need for a Japanese (or American) kitchen. First, the produce and the seafood is often exceptional. The packaged food items are of wide variety, often direct from Japan and replaced often (theres plenty of people shipping here, so much of the inventory turns over quickly). Highly recommend Nijiya.
Came here to find sushi ingredients (rice vinegar, seaweed, short grain rice, wasabi) and got everything I needed. Was also pleasantly surprised by their mushroom selection - lots of varietals for much less than regular supermarkets/farmers market. Overall seemed like a great specialty market.
Great little place to get quick foods and drinks. Love the selection and the import drinks!
Great selection, very clean
Polite staff, clean store, varied selections
Most of the stuff seemed decent, and I really wanted to like this market but Im baffled by their customer service. I bought some peeled garlic to use the same day and when I opened it discovered mold in the middle of the pack (not visible when purchasing). I called and was told to bring it back. I took it back the next day (~30 min drive) and told them Id be perfectly happy to just exchange it with a better pack. There was only one pack left so I grabbed it. I was then told to pay the $0.50 difference. What? I just drove half an hour (with gas I paid for) because your store put out rotting garlic... I dont have another option because there are no other packs to grab. Such a silly way to lose a customer.(Obviously I couldve covered the $0.50 but it was the principle of the matter...)
5 to 10 min wait outside. Get some sun. Great little place. Clean.
Its a Japanese grocery store and they have assorted snack foods, meat, and vegetables.
Smaller than other japanese store but you can find most of the stuff needed.
A pretty small Japanese market but its a convenient place to stop by to find specialized items. I always come at the end of the day for discounted sushi (though theres been less discounts during my recent visits). Actual fish quality is honestly pretty bad but I cant resist. Otherwise they carry various Japanese salad dressings that I love, various Asian snacks, etc. Not a bad grocery store but not somewhere Id do my regular grocery shopping.
When you want to make sushi at home and want the best quality fish Nijiya Market is the place to go. These place is an Japanese Market, most if not all produces and products Japanese origin.Although it gets expensive really quick. Dont go in hungry !
Awesome healthy store! The ready made lunches are great. Just be prepared to not understand most labels because they are in Japanese. 4 stars because of that.
Great market for Japanese items. Just fun to see what is available. Wish I lived closer.
The price here is around 30% higher than other places, won’t come back for sure.
Friendly staff. Good selection of Japanese food and products wish I went here long ago when I knew of it. Just started going 2 weeks ago.
Best source of Japanese groceries in SF Bay Area. Normally, we shop in store but we are avoiding that now so we tried their online shopping. Though the store has great produce, meat and fish, only nonperishanles are available online. That still made it possible to get the nori and sauces we needed. They were exceptionally fast to get the items shipped and quickly resolved a small delivery problem. I look forward to being back in the store to shop, but until then, I will return to Nijiyas online ordering service for Japanese grocerries.
Best sushi and sashimi.FRESH!
Love this little grocery store. Great for finding Japanese gems. Not so great for supermarket basics.
Little market, but a lot of great items. Better Japanese specific selection than other local Asian stores. Great premade food in the back too.
Love this place and all the other Nijiya markets as well in the Bay Area ... they have great fresh sushi fish, tasty cooked meals for lunch and other goods only otherwise available in japan ... they have some great soba noodles, premium sushi rice and even some good quick microwaveable soups as well
Great variety and quality
Great bento boxes and other food that you can just pick up to eat. small but has everything!
Awesome selection of Japan imported food. Also pretty good bento boxes for a quick lunch. Prices are fair.
Excellent sushi selection to the rear of the store. Great special deals
Nijiya is a great Japanese grocery chain. We always order sushi platters from their San Mateo location for special occasions. They have fresh produce, wonderful bento-boxes and other options for a quick lunch, and the staff is very efficient. If you are looking for an obscure Japanese ingredient, they probably sell it here.
Good place to shop Japanese groceries. :)
Always reliable, great food and snacks, and friendly staff. My only gripe is that they never brought back the cashew cookies.
Small store with limited offering compared to SF location.
Nice small Japanese market. Quite busy. There is parking in front
Has great foods some you cant find anywhere else.
Great place to get Japanese groceries as well as bento. Parking can be busy but its not as bad as parking at suryki so I prefer to do my shopping here
Great resource for Japanese foods. 20% off later in the day on deli style items
Rare gem in San Mateo. The prices are reasonable. But this store is very cramped and hard to walk around with a grocery cart specially when it’s crowded. Stick to the basket! Good selection of fresh Japanese lunch meals that are packed and ready-to-eat! They provide chop sticks at the cash register. Staff are friendly.
Fresh prepared Japanese food and groceries for people to buy and enjoy to eat and/or drink.
The sushi here isn’t as good as the one in San Francisco. The pieces of fish are too large and cut sloppily. Tasted more “fishy” than fresh. But they have a lot of desserts! (Coffee Jelly!)
