Sashimi is great, chiken teriyaky is delicious, the guy that took my order helped me out nicely, oh by the way there is no sign or name on the restaurant just get to the bussiness right on the corner, also there is no dine in, they got some tables set up outside and also you can take out and go eat at any of the wonderful beaches or view points around.
I cant express how much I love this place. It was recommended to me by a friend, and I have been back time and time again. Anyone who visits us will typically be treated to some Old Town Sushi. The portions are large and the quality is great. My favorite sushi place. The roll in the pictures that is topped with crab meat is the No. 1 Roll. So good!
We have been going here for years! Its really good family dining! Everyone treats you as if you are the best customers and they give us their undivided attention! They always make something extra special for us to try! They make us feel like family! And they treat everyone just like this!!They can get very busy... crowded! But its worth the wait! It is a warm... welcoming dining experience!!! The portions are very large! They definitely do have anyone walk away still hungry!I recommend the number one roll! Its a mountain of crab meat! Its an experience!
My favorite sushi place.Great portions, rolls are big. Some sushi restaurants serve really tiny rolls, this is not one of them..Always taste the same. No change. Strongly recommended
Very friendly staff and large portions for fair pricing. One of the only spots that doesnt close shortly after lunch and then re-open for dinner. When looking around the restaurant at what other people ordered it seems that they are generous on portions across the board. Excited to try this place again with so many specials offered, highly recommend.
First time here. Came here on a sunday right when they opened. First impression is the old look of the restaurant and has a smell to the place. We had 13 people and were waiting for the last 5 to show up. The waiter was hoovering around our table to anxiously to take our order but we were not all here yet. We all felt uncomfortable with his notepad and pen ready. When we got our food, some orders werent complete. For instance ordering a shrimp tempura udon, the noodle soup came but the shrimp tempura came 15min later after we asked where it was. The food is bang for the buck and its ok food. But the cleanliness and smell will keep me away.
I would definitely come back here again. The grilled salmon belly is a guilty pleasure. Hot. Crunchy. Melts in your mouth. I felt bad for not finishing because it was just me, but that’s a good problem to have. The signature roll was mind-boggling. I didn’t know where to start. Obviously I would start at the top with the bed of crab meat, but when would I actually eat the sushi roll? It was just as fun eating it as it was delicious. If I’m ever back in town, I’d definitely like to come back.
Great for rolls. Look at their back menu. Two items for $18-ish or three items for $25-ish. Three of us came in and ordered the three and two.Rock and roll, double salmon and hamachi rolls. Then salted mackerel and beef sukiyaki soup. Meals came with two salads which is just lettuce and dressing, them two bowls of miso soup.Rolls were the first to arrive. All good flavors, and good fish to rice ratio.Mackerel came in three pieces so perfect to share for our group. Perfectly cooked, no bones to dig through.Beef soup was sweet, a nice balance with the salted mackerel. It came with two bowls of rice.We were so full. Ended up taking most of the soup home with us.Definitely swing it, order off the back menu. Great deal for $50-ish for three people.
Great bang for your buck. Havent been here for a few months. Look like fish slices get thinner now on the rolls. But still good deal if you not picky
Went for lunch takeout and wow their lunch deals are great value for money. I got a full portion of tonkotsu, full portion tempura, 3 pieces of California maki, a soup, salad and rice for $15. The tonkotsu and tempura were both freshly deep fried and taste good and California maki was pretty generous. The wait was unfortunately 20 min long with nowhere to sit but thankfully there are a few boba places next door so you could buy some boba and hang out.
Estimated order time was 45 minutes. It took 1.5 hours. This restaurant used to be great, but it absolutely cannot handle the demands of COVID pandemic to go orders. Sadly I must advise you to avoid this restaurant at least until things get back to normal.
Ramen itself is 3 stars, it was nothing special and didnt taste authentic. But the chashu was nice and soft. Theres a huge sushi menu. Sushi is pretty sweet but generous in portions. Staff were helpful and friendly.Double salmon sushi has soo much salmon and very value for money!Fried eel with yam tempura is actually sweet potato. The dish was too sweet for me ☺
Our favorite sushi place! Affordable big portions, quick service and mice people. No pretentiousness at all its perfect
Great spot to get decent food. Theyve got tons of special deals so make sure to check the offers that are located on the wall. This definitely isnt top tier sushi so if youre looking for that this definitely isnt the place for you. Overall, service is great and pretty quick. they get pretty crowded at either lunch or dinner so you most likely will have to wait.Theyre bento boxes are completely worth it! I usually have plenty of leftovers. The number one roll is probably my favorite thing to get here.Parking around the area is all metered.
Old Town is very hit or miss. And when its a hit, its alright at best. They serve their sushi a little bit on the larger size. The ratio of rice to raw fish seems pretty off to me and it ends making me feel kind of gross. There are people who love old town sushi, but this is just my take on them.
Its one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Bay Area. I gave 4 stars b/c the resturant is kind of small, and decoration is old, BUT the dishes are really GOOD.I like their sashimi dish, really suggest their Saba shioyaki and Hamachi kama.I heard people complained hard to find parking, here are some tips:1. There is a parking structure just right cross the street.2. San Mateo downtown has a Caltrain station, its kind of fun walking in San Mateo downtown, and you dont have to worry about finding parking.
I the happiest patron they have, best food, best Family restaurant. cant wait to go back inside for dinner.
This is a poorly run Japanese restaurant run by people who have little to no understanding of what good Japanese food should be like. I had the unagi roll and the tempura udon. The unagi (eel) roll had way too much rice, way too much fake crab meat, and very little eel, which you could barely taste because its overpowered by the obscene amount of mayo they put into the roll. The udon came with a separate plate of tempura. Nice! Unfortunately, the tempura was very greasy. And the veggies themselves were dry and wilted. They basically fried old, wilted vegetables in warm oil. What was more disappointing was the actual bowl of udon. This bowl had a broth that had no flavor; it tasted like water with a bit of salt. In it was a generous portion of udon noodles but way more than one persons portion. This place isnt Japanese. This is a Chinese-run restaurant that tries to sell you what they consider to be Japanese food. Nothing wrong with Chinese chefs cooking Japanese; some Chinese chefs are the most talented chefs in the world. Its just that the chef of this particular restaurant has no idea how to cook Japanese food properly and I was thoroughly disappointed and almost offended by the amount of butchery they inflicted upon the Japanese cuisine.
The rice taste weird sticky definitely not fresh. Is not high quality sushi. I dont recommend not because is cheaper is good.
This is our favorite sushi spot of all time. The staff is awesome, the prices are the best in the area and the fish is always fresh. We recommend the double salmon roll, and salmon skin roll and the salmon belly appetizer. Amazing. The dinner combos are a great deal too for sashimi.
Extremely rude service. Pick up the phone and ask you to be on hold for obnoxiously long times. And never answer the phone. Why waste peoples time when you dont care about their orders
Food ok but wouldn’t honor online discount
The portion is very generous! Service is fast. The menu swells with plenty of selection. My favorite is the hamachi kama. Their pick up setup during the pandemic is one of the most efficient and safest. They have a table outside so that customers dont have to enter the premise. Some other restaurants nearby had too many customers (less than 1 foot apart) lining up inside for carry out.
I love this place. My go to sushi place! Not too expensive but yummy!
Food is ok. Waiting time is toooooo long!
Very reasonable price and good tasting sushi. During the pandemic, they only have take out, so call ahead and place your order for pick up.
Great value and good quality, especially for the price. I love sushi places where its easy to get really full. Not a big fan of the mayonnaisey crab they put in some of the rolls but thats just me.
Affordable lunch with huge portion size. The food is mediocre but if you are after value then it’s worth visiting (Bento with pork katsu, assorted tempura, 3 california roll pieces, salad, rice, and miso soup was $9.95). If they had served a portion size that’s smaller then I may have given them only two stars. Will try them again when I’m hungry so that I can try their rolls.
The Crunchy California roll is so good. Ir took me years to find a place that make really good sushi. Not expensive at all.
Large portions, tasty rolls. Huge pieces of fish on the Nigiri and reasonable prices. Ordered 4 rolls and 3 nigiri, $58
Great food. Plenty of delicious choices. If you go here ask for joe and tell him he is awesome.Bring a fly swatter because the door is always open..
Good value for fast tasty Japanese food
Fast service, variety of rolls, good prices, not the freshest but for the price you get what you pay for, parking is a pain sometimes as the streets are usually full and the parking structures can be as well.
Sushi is pretty good. Price is great though. I always get the specials on the back. Portions are huge! Great place to go if you are looking for quantity. 😁
Sushi place run by Chinese owners and staff. Pretty fast. What used to be known for its big quantities and low prices. Im not sure thats the case anymore but its a solid place for sushi. Expect a wait on Saturday nights.
Great sushi and you get what you pay for. It is a little expensive, but everything tastes nice and fresh. The Sushi Love Boat is a huge platter that can feed two people with a big appetite and has a lot of variety! If youre feeling adventurous, try that!
Its horrible. We ordered and waited for the food for an hour since the restaurant didnt call or let people know the food was ready to pick up until we asked.
Sushi caused my gf diarrhea, sukiyaki was totally sweet and not salty at all. Screwed up 2 items out of 3, bravo. Will never come again.
Excellent place! A little hole in the wall with excellent food! Rolls are pretty large, so if you normally eat two, know their sizes are quite large. Excellent food, excellent price. Go with time as there is usually a 15 to 20 minute wait.
Fantastic sushi joint. No fancy dining room, but the food is to die for. Absolutely the biggest (and best) dragon roll I have ever had. Service was superb. Cant wait to go back.
This is our go-to sushi place before we head to the movies. The place is always crowded with a wait for good reason, the sushi here is really good and fresh. I like to sit at the bar and watch the chefs make the rolls right in front of us. The servers can be a bit abrupt but are very efficient. All the food is fairly priced for the area. I highly recommend the Lion King roll and the No 1 roll!
Old crab meat smelled sour and tasted bad. Never coming back. The guy that took my order was nice so I still tipped him but refused to eat or pay for the meal.
Great quantity and good quality. Definitely enjoyed dinner and there was a lot more food than expected. I was soooo full. Definitely will come again when I feel like driving over the bridge from East Bay. I can get busy so go sooner than later.
Simply amazing!!! Old Town Sushi was recommended by a local as Im visiting from Maryland and it is by far the BEST sushi Ive had hands down!! I cant think if a place in MD that can even come close!!!
Best hidden gem sushi spot. Great daily specials! Inexpensive for the quantity and quality of the food. Great servers!
Definity high quality sushi and the sashimi is very fresh. You get a lot of food for the price and it is worth the wait during rush hours. I would highly recommend if you like sushi.
Prices were reasonable, service was friendly, but a bit slow (though faster than some others sushi places in the area). Food was fresh and fine, (just nothing exciting). Better value than many other sushi places in the area.
Well, wanna get food poisoning and horrible customer service? Welcome to Old Town Sushi. Place had several free seats and servers looked at us waiting and chose to ignore our presence. Also took forever to receive the order which was a disappointment as well. Made us feeling nauseous and sick!Do not take your chance on this place.
Quaint and cozy little restaurant in downtown near theater with great tasting and low-priced sushi and Japanese entrees. Portions are big and yummy.
The staff is friendly and welcoming. I came in a little late for lunch but was served very quickly. Old Town would be good stop for a fast, delicious lunch. The chefs specials are a good deal for some fresh and flavorful nigiri.
Awesome sushi roll place. The dinner line is fairly long, but I just call for a take out. Food is ready by the time I arrive. Reasonable prices and giant rolls. Sushi is fresh. Not sure what else you want for a local sushi place. It isnt fancy, but it tastes good and is cheap.
Nice staff very popular may need to wait, but definitely worth wait. Decent amount of food for the price. I usually do the three item dinner combo and share with my wife.
We went to the original location. (Theres also a second location a couple doors down). The waiter and the owner were both there when we visited, and they were awesome! The waiter (we didnt get his name) was a tall Asian guy who was the best! He yelled out our orders (in a good way) and was attentive to our every need, from forks to spoons to extra water. We all were laughing because he was so amusing. Definitely was our comedy element for the day. Needless to say, we will be coming back for the service alone! On another note, the food was awesome too!!! The portions are almost unbelievably huge and you definitely get your moneys worth and then some. The California Crunch roll was more like a plate and the #1 was amazing. What got us the most was the katsu. Ive never seen so much katsu in my life. Even when we order it from other places and order extra, still was less than what we saw here! We had to take the rest home, and Im sure the kids are gonna be eating it for the next couple days. It was that much!
I love this place. No matter how many times I think I feel like they are yelling at me (which they are not), will still come back and order from them. The sushi is humungous! No matter what the sushi order is.No matter how busy they are Ill still order. The service is fast. The staff is attentative. And food quality is decent.
If you like California style sushi. Fusion. Non-traditional sushi. No Japanese people cooking here.
Its good, but didnt feel as good as the price.Food: Well made, quickly made, has nice flavor, HUGE portions. Sushi, noodles, all the Japanese stuff youd expect, done Japanese style. No fusion.Service: Friendly, attentive, fast.Atmosphere: Its traditonal. The space felt cramped, but clean. I blame the layout.Price: It felt like too much for what we ate. Everything was good, but it felt like a meal I could get elsewhere for significantly less.
Very good prices for the amount of food you get - Especially the lunch menu! Good taste, fresh tasting, would recommend! Expect a bit of a line if you are going during peak hours however.
What a find! Great sushi all around and amazing prices for the quality. Good old school San Mateo vibe and settings. Not snobby or tastefully over refined. Order in rounds. The rolls are huge!
Ate here today when we saw our regular sushi place was closed since the owners are on vacation.* The sushi was good, though very big and hard to lift at times.*We got the Karaage, and it tasted off to me. It took me a minute to realize the taste was most likely freezer burned chicken.* That wasnt very pleasant. The staff was nice and attentive - always filling out water and removing finished plates.* The place was a bit of a dive. The tables and the soy bottle was a little grimey.Overall, its not an experience I would like to have again any time soon. Gave it 3 stars instead of the 2 I would give for the food quality, as I thought the staff were doing their best.
One if my favorites among San Mateos many Japanese restaurantsGenerous offerings that never fail to please and accommodating. 6 year old Sophie loves salmon roe...asked and they made a special California Roll with a salmon roe toppingThe line can get long, so arrive early for lunch
Bad service
After a long day of travel I needed a place to eat while waiting for traffic to die down. I took a quick Uber to Old Town, settled into a corner of the sushi bar and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere. The sushi was delicious and beyond filling. When I got my bill it came to half of what I expected. Impressed.
Not too expensive. Plenty of space and private cubes for bigger parties. The food always taste good here.
Decent sushi at fair prices. They pack on a good amount for sushi rolls, so you do get your bang for your buck. Friendly & fast service here. Parking is tricky since its downtown SM esp during the lunch hours.
I love Old town sushi, from the name itself to the variety and quality of sushi/bento plates they offer. -.5☆ for the service, theyre almost always busy so its hard to get good service. Even on slower day, a lot of the staff just seem to be in a rush. But they do always get the orders right. -1.5☆ because theyre not a kid friendly place. Not sure if they even have booster/high chairs since I wasnt offered one for my 1yr old. After she got a little fussy the service just stopped all together. We spent the last 20+ minutes with no water refill or check-ups. My husband eventually went up to the kitchen to get the check and boxes. Its best to come when you know youll have a sitter.
Good value. I love the salmon belly appetizer, soft, juicy, moist and delicious. Big portions on the sashimi.
Good: pricing and available seating.Bad: quality and service. In particular, we ordered the hamachi sashimi and it arrived frozen. When I flagged this to our server, he said it was fresh but we have to freeze it.Well, yes, thats sushi grade fish, but it shouldnt be SERVED frozen.Quite disappointing. He didnt offer to bring a different roll or take action of any kind.
Great sushi at amazing prices. Frankly, I dont know how they do it. My wife and I can easily fill ourselves with some to spare at under $30. Theres often a line on the weekends, but its worth the wait.
Very good sushi. Theres a usually a wait anytime you go but its worth it and the service is great
Place is packed a lot of the time and there is very little space between people sitting, which just makes it feel uncomfortable. Some people like starring at what you eat... otherwise sushi like the number 1 roll and California crunch are pretty damn good. HUGE rolls and lots of them for what you pay! Good place to eat with friends only.
Very good Japanese food. Its reasonably priced as well. I always go for their bento boxes which has a lot of food for the price. I always leave full.
Best sushi downtown San Mateo! Salmon skins my favourite dish here. Friendly fast service. Always busy!
Foods taste still good BUT service is going down hill
This is a hidden gem in San Mateo downtown for sushi. There are other really good places as well but if you are looking for good sushi and great value I dont think Old town sushi can be beat. The wait can be 10-15 minutes but the host is courteous and the staff works efficiently to get the tables ready.Food is amazing and I would recommend every special roll and the chicken karaage!! The quantity was enough that two of us (with a Friday evening appetite!) could still not finish 4 rolls and the karaage. We got the karaage to go finally!I highly recommend coming back over several trips to savor the rolls as in one go and given all the great selection, one can not do true justice to this place!I hope you all enjoy the food as much as I do!
Great service and delicious sushi rolls
This is a small sushi restaurant that serves amazingly generous portions. (I recommend getting a 3 piece dinner to share with someone. Great pricing for lots of great sushi)The wait time to get in was under an hour but the shop is so small that most people waiting were crowded in the tiny lobby area to keep out of the cold.Waiting was definitely worth it since the food was so good. The rolls are decorated very well and fish is just piled on top. One dinner combo can easily feed two people. We paid about 60 dollars before tip for two dinners and an extra roll.Dont be afraid to be adventurous as we sampled several things on the menu and we all found them to be very delicious.
One of my favorites in downtown San Mateo. Its a small restaurant though, so plan to wait if you dont go early (as is many downtown places). I think run by a Chinese family, so its not your super authentic Japanese experience, but for quick good sushi, my family loves it.
