An amazing selection of beautiful knives and home goods. I remember when this was a tiny little shop on Guerrero. Now it is a large, full-scale operation on Valencia. The staff are so knowledgeable and helpful. We get the best gifts from here - from pocket knives for groomsmen gifts to antique skewers for birthday gifts. Its a really cool shop thats worth the visit!

Easily one of the best shopping/retail experiences I have had in a long time. Happened upon the store with a friend and we popped in to see what they had and we were both blown away. The assortment of knives is one thing (spectacular) but the service, engagement and passion for knives/the craft of knife making is unreal. I visited two days in a row and bought both times…. I highly recommend a visit even if you’re just curious to know more about knives and metalwork. I will definitely be back!

I passed by Bernal Cutlery and I was compelled to walk in. The store is beautiful and the staff led me to have one of the best shopping experiences I’ve ever had. Kyle helped me pick out my first chef knife and he was soo knowledgeable I learned so much from him in my short time there! He even gave me a recommendation of a knife shop in New York since I’m not in the San Francisco area. The shipping process was so seamless and easy, my knife came today and I’m in love! Thank you so much Kyle and Bernal Cutlery!!

Ive lived in the Mission district all my life and I didnt know this place existed until a few months ago. I was searching YouTube videos on how to use whetstones and came across a YouTube video featuring Bernal Cutlery. Ive gone there a few times since and I love this place. They have a great collection of Japanese knives, books, whetstones, etc, etc. Everyone who works there are very friendly and very knowledgeable. Ive bought a few things from them and Im very happy with everything I have bought. I will be signing up for classes on using whetstones properly as soon as they start up again in a couple of months.

Honestly this place is amazing, they seem busy at times but they will help you as best they can. I had a mixup with my delivery which was my own fault and they were still able to help. Not to mention the knife I had ordered is fantastic, almost scary sharp. That kinda sharp where I could chop, dice and mince, everything for a restaurant and still shave with it a week later ( provided you take care of it) very upfront on their products and help you if you ever need a sharpen as well which for me is a godsend. I will see myself buying many knifes from this place In the near future. For anyone shying on the prices. These are high quality knifes, not your run of the mill pocket knife. Their gonna be expensive. Find the one right for you and go out and get your high quality blade. Its worth it and you wont be disappointed

Amazing store, my husband and I were looking for a new chefs knife and I was amazed at how helpful and knowledgable the staff was. We werent even looking for anything too crazy, told them that we wanted to keep our budget around $130, and they still took the time to show us numerous options (probably a dozen different knives?) at and around that price point and walked us through all the differences between them.I honestly cant remember the last time I had a customer service experience this good. I will definitely be going back, and I cant recommend these guys highly enough!

Destroyed my knife. Just wanted my pocket knife sharpened and so the guy at counter quoted me 10-15 dollars. Was a little higher than what I wanted to pay but I said ok. Then he asked if I wanted the serrated part sharpened as well. I ask how much for that. And was quoted $15. 20mins later I get my knife and the serrated part was almost completely gone making it less effective at cutting than its previous dull state. The second picture is another pocket knife that has serrations like the one I took in until they destroyed it. The rest of the blade or what was left of it was only as sharp as when I brought it in now just missing nearly a 1/4 of material! Thanks for nothing. To top it off they left all the wet sanding gunk inside the knife and now my spring assist doesnt work and Ill have to take it apart and clean it myself since its now all dried up in there. I would have been better off doing it myself using dry cement as my sanding stone!

Very professional service. Ive loved Bernal Cutlery since their first shop in Bernal Heights. They do a great job sharpening my knives and have advised me when my old knife had been sharpened (by other places) for so many years that it wouldnt be as sharp - I appreciated the information. Its really great to have a shop dedicated to find knives and sharpening and not have to rely on a secondary service offered in a hardware shop or sent off to services you dont directly see.Im also very happy that they will ship my orders back to me for a small fee and that saves me having to make a second trip and find parking in the Mission.

Really cool shop with knowledgeable folks and an amazing selection of anything bladed. That said, the delivery times on items left with them is pretty outrageous for the prices they charge. 10-14 days is their standard turn around time for knife sharpening.Edit:I wasnt aware of the knife loaner system. The rudest customer service I’ve ever experienced. And from the owner no less.I called the store to ask a few questions about a Japanese knife I was interested in buying. Isaid to the woman who answered that I’d like to speak to someone who knows a lot about that particular knife since I have quite a few questions. She barked, “What’s your question?” I repeated that I have a few questions that I’d like to ask someone who knows the knife well. She asked snarkily, “What makes you think I don’t know a lot about this knife?” I explained that I don’t presume to know whether she knows much about the knife, and if she does, then I’m fine talking to her. She smirked and said she was offended. Then she told me she’s the store owner and that what I said was very rude. She has a real chip on her shoulder. I feel sorry for the people who have to work with her - a snowflake who looks for offense and finds it everywhere.I ended up buying the knife for much cheaper from a very respected Canadian store - Knifewear. The Knifewear people I spoke to were wonderful. They answered all my questions and were extremely friendly and professional, unlike Bernal Cutlery.*I just saw the response from this woman. Not only is she nasty and rude, she’s a paranoid liar. Our conversation was nothing like she describes. She describes the conversation as though I was out to get her. I don’t know her, don’t know her shop (just googled the knife and this store was one that came up). It’s ludicrous to say that I didn’t believe she was the owner. Why wouldn’t I?? She didn’t tell me she was the owner until the end of the conversation, after she had nastily demanded that I tell her what my question was. I certainly wasn’t “mad” that she wildly over-reacted and told me to shop elsewhere - by then, I had no intention of buying anything from her. She’s a vindictive, entitled woman who should get a life.

You feel the passion for the trade when you walk in. A candy store for knife geeks. I took in 2 heavily used Japanese gyutos to be sharpened. They did a good job on fixing chips and overall bevel. They even offered a complimentary interim rental knife. Unfortunately, I didnt quite get the edge I would when I get the knives sharpened in Japan. The bevel was so thin it looked like another 30min of elbow grease was needed and the sharpness of the tip and middle were inconsistent. No mirror finish either. I should have articulated my preferences, but then again, they didnt ask. I can tell the edge wont last too long. I guess for the price, it was not bad.

The best cutlery and sharpening shop in San Francisco at the very least, and likely the west coast (as I have yet to come across a comporable shop with the same level of knowledge, sharpening skill, and exclusive products). You may have come across a decent shop or two, but the inventory at Bernal is outstanding - Josh and his team have done a fantastic job establishing personal relationships with small, highly-esteemed smiths throughout Japan that you will have trouble finding elsewhere except larger online stores with much larger budgets. But at Bernal you get more intimate interactions with a highly passionate and skilled staff in both salesmanship of knives and whetstone sharpening. They also carry an extensive collection of German and French-made cutlery and tools. They even have a small collection of pocket knives. You cant go wrong giving this place your business!

Got my bench made knife sharpened here. They sharpened it at first with a grinder, which to my understanding is not recommended by benchmade. Then they finished it up on stone, which even more messed with the definition of the blade lines and definition. It was very sharp when they were done. But, to my dismay, within 2 weeks of light use on cardboard and occasional vines, my knife became extremely dull. I am very disappointed and will not be coming back to this location. For an authorized benchmade dealer, one would think they would produce quality.

Had my knives sharpened here. And they look great. Almost mirror polish on the edge. But they didnt clean up my knives though. Maybe they didnt have too, but in had some tape glue and some gunk on there. It wouldve just been good to see them service the entire blade and not just the edge. For your info, I brought a couple of Benchmade folders,CRKT razel, K-Bar, and some Kershaw Leeks.
