We visited the Hermitage just because it is one of the most known places in the world. It is truly grandiose, though. The exhibition is marvelous and everything is organized. It is very hard to find parking there, and we had to drive around for a long time to finally snatch a spot, so make sure to arrive earlier before your time to go in. Buying tickets online was super easy and the website in general is very website user-friendly.
One of the largest museums in the world, if not the largest one. There are collections from all over the world from ancient times to modern. It takes at least 3-4 hours just to finish the ground floor to the full, even if you skip some of the exhibition rooms just taking a quick glance. Its worth coming to St. Petersburg just to visit here. Magnificent!
#2 Thé Hermitage MuseumThis is the worlds largest museum, it’s the size of 186 Football ground it is so big. Even if we spend entier day we will not be able to cover this place, we reached here post lunch around 4 and explored this place till it was shut, our tour guide explained and shared knowledge about the each place & things which was there painting, Weapons, each rooms & etc.. never ever have I spent so much time in the museum, however enjoyed thuru out.
The Hermitage museum is one of the reasons to visit St Petersburg, not the only one of course. The museum is full of interesting items, I suggest you go there early and spend as much time as possible. After a couple of hours my brain was overloaded with information.I highly recommend it to everyone, I would love to revisit some time in the future.
Biggest and beautiful museum i ever seen. Beautiful and long corridor with full of history and not only about Tsardom of Russia but also about history of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine and etc. You need 3 or 4 day for good visit. Take a camera with you)))
THe word on the street is that you need 9 years to see everything thats in there! Relax and take your time. Picasso room very interesting. Enjoy it to the MAX!
The winter palace used to be the residence of the Russian tsars. However, the revolution it was turned into a museum which is considered to be one of largest art museum in the world. This museum is a must see while visiting Saint Petersburg. It exhibits a vast collection of both foreign and Russian art pieces. The museum is quite large so be prepared to walk a lot a spend most of your day for it. There is no restrictions on pictures or videos.
We went here on few occasions and every time had greatly enjoyed it. Our favourite is the Knight Hall!
Excellent,. surprisingly large collection- well worth a visit
The Palace complex of the State Hermitage is situated on the banks of Neva river, having amazing Baroque architecture, with wonderful collection of paintings and artefacts. Winter Palace, small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, General Staff building and Alexander Column are part of complex. Sections of Italian Art, English Art, Russian Art, Flemish Art, French Art etc., Classical antiquity, Treasure Galleries, Numismatics, Jordan stair case, Peter Hall (small throne room, War gallery, Peacock clock, Leonardo da Vinci room, Large Throne room, Gold drawing room, Italian sky light hall, the Crouching Boy of Michelangelo, 19th century B.C. statue etc. are must watch. Needs minimum 4-5 hours to visit main areas of the complex and 6 pm is the closing time of Museum.
It was great experience for me to visit such a good museum. Lots of famous artists work.
For interested ones with History and Decoration you have to visit Hermitage, the first Museum in Russia in terms of magnificence and gorgeousness.
The winter palace is very big museum, we can use whole day inside with beautiful collection. There are provide canteen and restroom along the way that we walking sightseeing inside the area. Nearby the main area also present the other museum connection. We can not finish only one day because theres beautiful^_^.
Great experience must see once in your life.
State Heritage Museum is the second largest Museum in the word. You cant visit Saint Peters-burg, without visiting the Hermitage! A huge palace, of outstanding beauty, and a vast collection of pieces of art.when enter the Museum you wouldn’t believe your eyes, how they made this.
Visited during the pandemic. There are 2 routes to choose from. Each session is for 2 hours. I took a wrong turn and ended up straying from my route. I was guided back by a nice staff lady, and ended up spending more than the two hours in the museum (luckily no one checked my ticket at the exit). The collection is incredible and enormous. One of the best in the world. More Rembrandt in one place, than Ive ever seen in European museums, enamel from Limoges, pre-rennaissance Italian icons, DaVinci, Italian ceramics, great Egyptian collection, entire hall with Greek vases. You can take photos without a flash. Small-medium backpacks are allowed. Water bottles are not allowed. I was paranoid about pickpockets and thieves, and clung to my backpack the whole time, but everything was ok. Unfortunately, its impossible to see the entire museum right now, because of the pandemic, but you would need a week to see everything, anyway.
Walking in the footsteps of Catherine and the Romanovs, in a Palace of exquisite beauty.Im willing to say that it tops Versailles.Im very impressed with St Petersburg. The only thing I hate are the two boys on Nevsky who keep trying to rob me ... and others.Surely the police can do something! They are regulars and its spoiling a perfect city.
Undoubtedly, one of the worlds best museums. Large richly decorated halls from Russian Tsar times. Gold, crystal, noble woods and stones. Impressive collection of masterpieces of art. Well organized tours. Even our 10 and 12 years old girls were fascinated and fully engaged during ~2 hours tour. Overall, a must visit place in Saint-Petersburg.
Always a pleasure visiting the Hermitage!
Hermitage is awesome place to spend your great time.Entrance fee is 500 rub. No offer for students. We have to spend more than 7 hrs atleast. ( But in the ticket they give only 2 hrs ) but you can as much you can.Hermitage is off on Monday.Wear comfortable shoes. You cant take water with you ( but I took).Inside you can take rest while walking.Arts of Leonardo da Vinci, piccaso are present in hermitage.Dont forget to go different cultural halls.Dont miss mummy and coffin.Good luck.
Absolutely amazing. So much to see from different centuries, geographies and styles. The amount of paintings and artefacts are unreal. They have ticket machines outside which don’t have queues so use those if you don’t want to queue (and are cheaper than online tickets). The ticket also gives you entrance to two other buildings. Great value for money.
The Hermitage is a beautiful museum you can spend a full day here walking around the rooms. When buying tickets must bring identification if youre doing the student price. If your a student the access is free. This applies to international students as well. The museum has a cafe, and the prices are reasonable. I suggest arriving early before opening so that its not crowded.
It has to be nothing less than 5 stars... the ONLY thing negative that I would say is that they let too many people in (2018), and youre often josling (or being jostled) for space. When I was there it was Chinese tourists that were there in their masses, and manners werent at the forefront of thought for them. Try to go in a quiet period. With the one negative aside, at EVERY corner, on every wall, you will be amazed. Just when you think youve seen the last Master painting, a room-full more appear. Never-mind the stunning artifacts inside this collosal, the architecture is simply stunning in itself, and the decor is something else too! This was a place where the Tsars called home. What a grand museum for such a grand old city.If you tire of this venue, or this city, youre simply tired of life!Youre going to need at the very least three hours to explore the treasures of this place (and Id recommend many more). Enjoy!
One of the biggest and best museum that I see till now. Great and magnificent and always full of visitors and tourists. Some windows have a beautiful view of sea and port and there is full of galleries of old and unique and artistic things from history of Russia and all the world.
Sorry for delay This was 2011. Had a great time and saw a lot of beautiful pieces. This was my favorite.
Amazing collections. Need several days to see. So much accumulated wealth.
An incredible museum where you can easily spend 2 full days.We were told that Wednesday after 4PM is the best time to arrive as it gets EXTREMELY busy. Many of the doorways are quite narrow and large tour groups come through at the same time making parts of the museum difficult to navigate.Still it is beautiful and well worth the visit.
Very nice place with broad and vast collection of arts and different artifacts from past. Impressive building from outside and inside with many types of dancing halls for example. The guidance to the lift could be better though, but there are lifts too. Just for knowledge for people with baby 😉.
Amazing museum, best to go early in the morning or have a guide so that you can skip most of the queue. Beautifully restored and maintained. Watch out for pick pockets. Like my guide says, “you back pocket does not belong to you”. So watch out. Must visit if you go to Saint Petersburg.
You can definitely feel that it is 2. largest museum in Europe. If you want to see all rooms properly you will have to reserve 3-4 full days. You have to definitely visit this place.
Awesome. Entry ticket of 500rubles is reasonable. Worth the effort to go around. Well maintained.
I spent a full day at the Hermitage and even that wasn’t enough. As I visited in Winter queues were not long at all. Decided not to book a guided tour as i rather explore museums myself. Recommended is to have a plan of what you want to see beforehand in order to make the most out of your visit. I went on a Thursday but if you go on a Wednesday night you can see the clock in operation at 8pm. The Hermitage is definitely worth a visit!!!!
No words can do justice to the Hermitage.
Best museum with huge collections. One of the most lovely place to know the history. Must visit place in Russia. It is definitely place to visit in Russia. Our group spent around 2.5 hours here but still more time was required as it is very big one with amazing collections.
This is one of those life experiences that is a must. Next to the Louvre this is the best museum Ive ever been too. The amount of artwork is overwhelming and you could spend days enjoying the works. However, it is extremely crowded and I would recommend getting there before opening to see the museum without too many people.
Im impressed here I have seen many beautiful and precious exhibits. And the treasures from Egypt that I liked Its too much to see in one day.
It is not necessary to say how beautiful the Museum is but so huge and has so many exhibits that one can spend endless time and still dont have enough of the place.
An incredible museum where you can easily spend 2 full days.
Ok! This place is an absolutely stunning palace and the art collection gathered here is very impressive. This is an absolute must on your trip to Saint Petersbourg. If you’re not interested in art, at least go and see the palace itself. It gives you an idea of the impressive and luxurious life the Russian nobles used to live back in the time it was an Empire.
We went to the Hermitage with Alla Tours while on a 24-hour stopover on our Norwegian Getaway Baltic cruise in August 2019. It was only a quick two-hour tour but we saw many of the highlights - the grand entrance stairway, the Peacock clock, hall leading to the theater, sculptures including one by Michelangelo, and many paintings by Rembrandt and others. As the second largest museum in the world, this is definitely a must-do while in St. Petersburg!
OK I heard about this museum for many years back in the United States. But visiting this museum blew me away! This is the largest place where someone can go and see Art today in the world. I believe there’s 11 million pieces of art in this museum! Where do you start? As I walked in and buy tickets on a hot day a gentleman came up and asked if I wanted it to work? I said yes. The tour guide was amazing she is a teacher in Russia, and taught me not to worry about the art but the culture and deep history of Russia. To be able to stand next to a Rembrandt where you could touch it, but I did it, and I would never do that. Is an amazing experience. To see the fine detail in the flooring to the ceiling to the windows to all the artwork that is in this building is way too much for someone to take in in one day. If you had love, please spend at least 2 to 3 days looking at this art. Also, this museum is in a perfect location, right on the water. I will definitely be back again, And spend more time to see at least another 300 pieces of art. If I’m a Russian, I’d be very proud of this museum! I’ll definitely be back
The collection is great. The process of acquiring tickets is too cumbersome and tedious. The process must be simplified.
It is huge and you take into consideration that you will need a lot of time if you want to check out all three floors. The rooms itself are an exhibition, but with the objects the place is just amazing. There isnt just Russian art and history, but also from other parts of the world.
Amazing museum. You can purchase the ticket using the machines before you enter the building on the left or right hand side, after the gate. Cards are accepted or cash. You must leave your coat also at before entering and any water. It is not allowed inside. Go early. It was the busiest place to visit even if we went a Thursday morning.Superb paintings. Splendid building. Total worth the money. I spent only 2h there and could not see half of it.
This is a great place! Take your ticket through the net, cause its a separat entry with less people waiting to enter. Take your time to visit all! Youll be have to spend 2 or 3 days at least. Take a map and translator machine whether you dont have a guide. Take the ticket into the inner yard and go to the opposite entry it is much faster. Enjoy.! Russia is big and great!
Fabulous but better in winter with no crowds. Nicholas IIs library was a real treat. The Jordan staircase is spectacular without tourists shouting and pushing. Ive experienced May and February and if you are brave enough to go in cold weather it is well worth it. Also the snow makes the whole city look even more amazing
Good place for tourist, If you want to visit a museum that has quality and has a lot of content, have a try here. It took me many hours to fully walk around.
It was really great
Huge, enormous and fabulous palace where is located the very famous museum.Wow, colors and style are amazing!Large art collections, make sure to visit it on low season or low days because it could be incredibly crowded.Museum staff is not so nice :(>>> Be sure to buy a ticket where you can visit the General Staff Building art exhibitions, they have the most amazing impressionism art collection i have ever saw!
The Hermitage Museum is the second largest art museum in the world, with over 3 million items, and it is amazing. We had a private guide, which is very helpful to see as much as possible, considering that it can be overwhelming. You could easily spend several days in there and not see everything. They will also work with small groups to have private tours even at night.
I can honestly say that this is the most impressive museum I have ever been to in my life. The sheer quantity and quality of the original works of art and royal trappings is absolutely mind boggling. If you spent just 30 seconds in front of each piece it would take 8 years to see everything. If you are ever in St Petersburg you have to go here. Definitely gonna try go there when Im older and spend a few days wandering the over 1000 rooms.
The State Hermitage Museum is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The largest art museum in the world, it was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky.
TIP TO AVOID QUEUE: use the ticket machines to buy the tickets.A very nice museum, it’s similar to the palace in Vienna and Versailles. I think the main problem of the museum complex is it’s huge size. The collections are very repetitive in terms or style which makes it a bit boring.
I am running short of words after exploring the Hermitage museum. I could not complete it but what I witnessed is beyond explanation. You need to complete one day to see the whole museum. You will find long queues of people waiting to explore it from inside. It is worth watching and tickets usually start from 700 rubles. If you want to skip lines tickets can cost you between $40-60. This place is highly recommended to visit but be ready to exhaust one day especially if you are on a short trip.
Great landmark. Great museum. Worth the visit if there are not too many people. We were lucky since it was no time yet for the cruise heads to invade it.
Get ready to get lost in a maze of architectural brilliance lined with masterpiece after masterpiece. I found the best approach was to pick a route on the free map that would take me to the highlights and then stop at anything that captured my attention on the way. This place is way too large to try and see it all and unless you are a serious art aficionado you dont need to. Just soak up the experience and marvel in wonder at the serious collection before you
Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items (the numismatic collection accounts for about one-third of them), including the largest collection of paintings in the world. The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors. Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya, and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad. The Hermitage is a federal state property. Since July 1992, the director of the museum has been Mikhail Piotrovsky.Of the six buildings in the main museum complex, five—namely the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre—are open to the public. The entrance ticket for foreign tourists costs more than the fee paid by citizens of Russia and Belarus. However, entrance is free of charge the third Thursday of every month for all visitors, and free daily for students and children. The museum is closed on Mondays. The entrance for individual visitors is located in the Winter Palace, accessible from the Courtyard.
The Hermatige is second only to the Louvre in Paris. You have to visit! The architecture is sublime. The collection is extensive. You can spend days here.
A world class museum that contains a huge collection of eastern western arts. It is located in the Winter palace, the former residence of the Romanov Family. The ticket price is quite reasonable given the wonderful experience. Make sure to specify at least 4-5 hours for your visit. It is also recommended that you buy the ticket online in advance to avoid the long queues. Another option is to show up as early as 10:00 at the time the gates are open so you can secure a smooth entry. Unfortunately, the dining options are not that great. There are two cafes accessible through the Jordan stairs.
We have had the good fortune to travel a lot. But i have never seen anything like this place. Take 3 amazing palaces combine it with 6 world famous museums and add the artwork from the Vatican, put it in a building half a mile square, and this is what you would have. Absolutely incredible. Art work was all famous names I remember from school. Sculptures, historical artifact from Greece and Egypt that rival any museum in those countries. People waited in line for hours in the rain to get in. WOW. Would take days to see it all.
It can easily take you a full day to go through the entire museum. The sheer grandeur and uniqueness in which each room has been designed is worth seeing. Use a map to navigate within the museum, without which you could easily be going around in a loop. The queue for tickets is really long, you might want to get there by 10 in the morning to beat the rush.
Second largest museum of the world made by the Catherine, former it was used as Winter Palace. Huge numbers of sculptures and famous paintings and many more things you can see collected from different parts of the world. It will take full day to see every things.
A wonderful experience !It is a wealth of the whole humanity that brings together the civilization and beauty testimonies that only art can convey.
Please dedicate at least a day to the Museum, you will not regret it. There are no words to describe the Architecture and Exhibitions, it will be the most grand and opulent place you will see across the globe. No exceptions!
Beautiful! Many beautiful artworks and sculptures. Youll get to see various art movements and artworks from reknown painters and sculptors. Also the personal connection of Catherine the Great. The palace is a must go to place in St. Petersburg. Youll not be able to complete everything in a day. Youll need 9 years to complete the collection.
A sprawling museum with art spanning decades. There are multiple floors and takes almost 4 to 5 hours to go through the museum.beautifully decorated and majestic museum.
Amassing museum !!! One of the most beautiful places Ive been to ...❤️
You must visit the biggest museum in the world by space. Its literally impossible to view each piece in this glorious piece of architecture.I strongly suggest at least seeing the paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci of the Madonna and Child; theyre incredible. If youre in Saint Petersburg, stop and enter here!
A great place to go!! A not to miss place. It has been stated that it would take a person 8 years to fully cover the gallery and its collection. !
If you want the chance to see some of the rooms empty - make sure to book the early access tours! The rooms are simply stunning but get crowded very quickly at the normal open time.
Place like this cant be reviewedIts an amazing Palace from times where Russian Tzars were controlling Europe, magnificent work of arts inside, glorious halls history written in it, its now the State Hermitage Museum - entry with a fee totally worth it, I recommend to visit in 2 days because the place is so huge - many information and booking on the museum website and I recommend to visit during the days its open till 9pmYou cant describe Winter Palace in Google review, gotta read more about it 👍
The beauty of the space is breathtaking. Try to come as early as possible, it gets very crowded with big groups. It’s incredible to loose yourself in this opulence, wandering around between all the big painters and feel the difference epochs that influenced this houses.
One of the best collections of western art I have ever seen. An amazing repository of human expression. The buildings are as much a work of art as the paintings and sculptures. A must see.
What an amazing place. Truth be told I was over consumed by all the art. Almost too much to take in. After 3 hours I still wasnt done. Ive never seen so much Van Gogh in one place. Also a lot of Imperial artifacts live here. Life was good for a king in the 1700s.
Incredible museum and a must-visit while in Saint Petersburg. Highly recommend getting the guided tour ticket as they explain the significance of the different areas in the palace. Quite a busy venue so get there as early as possible.
Excellent. One of the best museums in the world. Lots of things to visit. A very wise decision is buying a 2 days visit online ticket. One day is not enough for this museum. Another tip (If you dont have e-tickets) is looking for e-tickets entrance. You will find 2 ticket machine near the entrance buy your tickets there and go in. Escape from lines for tickets. Go as early as you can cause there is no crowd in early morning. If you have planned for 1 day and you need to see any special item, ask for its address. In a shell, antiques are in the 1st floor and paintings and artworks are in above floors. But for visiting all the antiques in the 1st floor you must go upstairs in the middle of the first floor and after a lot of rooms in the second floor go back downstairs to 1st floor again.
This palace in itself is definitely wonderful. The main room let you stunned. The collections are many and quite rich and various. Its absolutely huge and definitely crowded.Dont buy the ticket inside the Museum. It will take ages.Buy the ticket on-line or outside with the automatic tickets machines, there you can use either cash or card but you can only buy the 700p ticket. No other tickets options.Get ready to be around for 4 hours.I suggest you to take the audioguide and to follow the map visiting all red pointed rooms. Are the most beautiful.Bring your own earphones for the audioguide. It cost 500p extra.Enjoy the amazing Winter Palace.Highly recommended.
Definitely a must visit if you’re in St Petersburg. This museum has a huge collection and includes Rembrandts and Michelangelos and many many others. My one piece of advice is to go with a group so you can get early access which makes a big difference as it can get very crowded.
Amazing museum, from art to architecture to artifacts to clothes. Just everything in this place is over the top and very well maintained and displayed.Just keep a big chunk of time for the Hermitage, it does take some time to get through it all.
The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg is one of best museums in Europe. Housed in the winter palace of the erstwhile Czar of Russia, the museum has some of the best art and artifact from this part of the world. Primarily, it showcases the old collection of over 3 million pieces making it the second largest museum in the world. A must do in St Petersburg.
Amazing place. We spent 3 hours there but could have spent the entire day. Great displays, well set out. A great collection of variety of art.
So much to see. Cant do it justice in one visit. The Palace rooms and remainder of the 2nd floor are the real gems, especially some of the galleries (walkways). Tickets from machine inside cortyard at 700 roubles were easy to purchase. Great day out.
Amazing experience. Amazing guide Anna.
Unfortunately due to the time constraints I was only to spend 2 hours there, but it will easily take days to visit, just like the Louvre.Note while it is recommended to purchase ticket online to avoid the line, you will still likely line to join a queue to enter the museum, primarily due to the security check. It seems to be particularly busy in the morning as we waited > half an hour to get in, but there was no queue when we left around 1-2pm.
Ive been there many times, but i always want to come back again! Its very beautiful! The square behind Hermitage is huge!I love walking across the bridge near the building, and make a photos from another side of the river. If you want to go inside, you must have 4-6h😊
Be sure to bring your passports if you are a foreigners. So much to see! Book a tour with the museum, the guide was super knowledgeable and well worth the 250rubs. She gives you the quick highlights of the highlight tour.
Beautiful white and gold decoration in some rooms and corridors. Its vast. Wear comfortable shoes. A picture paints a thousand words...
Absolutely gorgeous!! A real eye-opener!! I was lucky to visit the State Hermitage Museum at the end of May 2017. The museum closed every Monday, but they opened the door just for our two tours from our NCL Cruise ship. The museum was so huge that we walked three hours and went through part of it. There are six museum buildings for a total collection of three million priceless art and painting collections, but the museum opened just one building to the public. It must be on your bucket list, a Must-Go wish list item!! I am thankful for having a chance to visit the museum. Thanks God!!! From Toronto, Canada.
Hermitage museum is second largest you have to visit this museum if you are visited Saint Petersburg. This museum take little bit of time because its second language museum of the world so it will take 5 to 6 hours to visit museum. If you are interested in history you must visit this museum this museum is connected with winter palace.
