I thought that I had found one of my “go to” stores on Union Avenue with this store. I’ve had several good encounters buying unique things there. The middle-aged woman at the register is always friendly and helpful in finding just the right things. However shoppers need to beware. The Coleman stoves, lanterns, kerosene lamps and so on in the back room look restored to functioning condition. The price you will pay for them is nearly what a new stove cost, but I’m a recycler and purchased a one of the Coleman stoves for a camping trip last week. The salesperson knew exactly that I was counting on the stove functioning and did not give me any reason to question it. Well, when I took it out and filled with gas, the pump didn’t work and the on-and-off valve was missing. That was frustrating, but I thought these things happen. What was unintelligible to me was that the store owner, or at least a younger salesperson, refused to give me my $30 back. She told me, “The store’s policy is that things are sold as is and cannot be returned.” If I had known that and the item were marked as such, I would never have purchased it. Given the circumstances and what I felt led to believe, I thought this businessperson would be understanding at least and flexible. But no. I’m sorry that I became overly angry (and I later called to apologize for my anger), still I don’t believe I was treated fairly in this deal. The take away. It should be easy for someone who collects these items to have the typical parts to restore these simple stoves and lanterns to functioning condition. Both don’t assume that. Unless you are looking for a Coleman stove or lantern merely to look pretty, you’ll pay a premium for an item that may not work and can’t be returned.Later edit: I most certainly did not scream obscenities as this owner slanderously states in her response. After presenting my well-reasoned account in several ways and appealing to her to understand, this owner rigidly denied she could do anything about it. Then I did raise my voice above my normal level but not to anything that could be distorted as screaming as my daughter standing next to me can attest, and I told her firmly that she had “ripped me off of $30.” No profanities were involved. I knew very well she could do something about it but was unwilling to do so and was being dishonest about that.

The man working at the counter was rude. I picked a few items and one didnt have a vendor number on it. He asked if I could show him where I found it and I responded my boyfriend found it and came and showed me, to which the man just responds No and shakes his head - whatever that even means. Then my boyfriend comes out and shows the woman working where he found it. It apparently wasnt in the right spot and the woman didnt listen to him when he tried to explain where he thought it actually came from, which was a woman vendors display /right next/ to where he found it (which was in a male vendors display). She totally ignored his suggestion and they refused to sell me the item in the end because they couldnt find a vendor number. They need a way better system to track their items/vendors. Ive never been refused a sale at a store ever, and I dont understand why they wouldnt work with us and try to make the sale, on top of the man being rude to me. I wont be returning.
