This has the best chocolate found yet in the world. My husband is a huge amateur connoisseur of chocolate as he enjoys sampling chocolate wherever we happen to travel to. On our trip to Maine and New Hampshire we found Byrne and Carlson and knew this was a special chocolatier. The ambiance of the store is beautiful. It is a tiny and delicious center of dark and milk chocolate along with truffles and other decadent chocolates. No matter where I am currently living I always order a box of chocolates from them annually and the shipment is easy and the chocolates arrive perfect and in a gorgeous arrangement. So either if you are in town or out of town Byrne and Carlson chocolate is something you need to try in your life!

2021:this is one of our favorite places in Portsmouth and we came back here after a two year break due to Covid. The chocolates are as good as ever although prices are noticably higher.2017:Best truffles bar none! Other chocolates are very good too. These chocolates are quite expensive, but they are definitely a special treat.

The most delicious chocolate I have ever had. I always get their assortment boxes as hostess gifts, and everyone has been delighted with the quality. Even my boyfriend, who is not a chocolate lover remarked about how delicious they are. Cant wait for our next visit!

Ive had my fair share of chocolate and very rarely have I found anything of this quality. Every time I visit, I feel like one of those kids from the Gene Wilder Charlie and the Chocolate factory movie. I urge everyone who passes this place to walk in. This is what nostalgia tastes like.

The quality of the base chocolate is exceptional. It is extraordinary just as is, in bar form. And with great ingredients, they make many other delicious products. I’m a chocolate snob, and this stuff passes the test.

Last evening I hosted a meeting in our design space at Jardiniere and I dressed 3 tables with cloths, flowers and candles. I think the attendees really enjoyed flowers and the store which looked beautiful in the evening. I served 3 flavors and colors of Byrne and Carlson malted milk balls in a clear glass compote dish - confection perfection!Each table was reluctant to pass the dish lest all the confections disappear - which they did!Everything they do is beautiful and delectable!

Some really great chocolates. The only one we didnt love was the dark chocolate peanut butter cup. The peanut butter was runny and not a great taste. Loved the chocolate with coconut center with toasted coconut on top.

I absolutely love this all-natural, no preservative so European shop. Its so low-key with its little sign I feel like I discovered it. Ellen and her husband are delightful and gracious, as are the staff, Ken and Elizabeth.Oh gosh, the muscadines are sublime. I always get some for Christmas and Easter.The chocolates are absolutely the finest, and are visually stunning as well. Were lucky to have Byrne & Carlson close by.

Quite simply the best chocolate in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas. Ive been stopping by B&C since elementary school for holiday gifts, or just to satisfy a sweet craving. Well worth a visit.

Byrne & Carlson is a Portsmouth gem that feels a bit like a tiny old-world Parisian shoppe, complete with the most wonderful dark chocolate cream truffles you may well ever taste. All the cream truffles, really...and the pure fruit jellies.Ellen and Christopher are kind, talented people who take pride in their craft and in creating a lovely environment.

If you go there, stay away from their truffles - they are seriously addictive. The raspberry flavored are the best truffles Ive had in my life. Candied orange/dark chocolate combo is also ridiculously good. Every time I visit the area I end up going there spending money.They can ship their chocolates too: sent my business partner a box of truffles last week and he was very pleased with packaging and, of course, the quality of the sweets.

The chocolate is extremely high quality and reasonably priced. The owners are not the most polite/customer service oriented.

I attempted to place an order on line and found that they only accept orders by phone or FAX. When sometime later (mid December) I called to place an order during regular business hours and got an answering machine. I left a message and when I received no reply, I called back twenty-four hours later and was told that they were no longer taking Christmas orders because they had as many as they could fill and that I should have known this because it was on their website. It was not on their website at the time I originally checked and there was no reason to re-check the website. The information was also not on their answering machine. The product may be excellent, but I doubt that it would offset the unpleasantness of the service. I will shop elsewhere from now on

This place is something special. Not like any other places Ive been to. If you like dark chocolate, this is definitely the place for you. Ive bought the truffles several times as gifts and they are fantastic.

Truly unique chocolates. Everything they make here is great. Im a big fan of the Dulcey chocolate bars, especially the ones with cranberries or mini malted milk balls on them.

While the first impression was good, terrible experience with follow-up visits caused me to downgrade rating. Custom service is terrible. Reviews on Yelp confirm that others have had very bad experiences, similar to mine. Sad, because it could be a great place.
