My father in-law gave me a custom made tube head recently. It sounds great, but given that its basically home made it had some wiring issues that created an unfortunate buzzing noise when plugged in/turned on. Jim was super responsive and helpful, and had the amp back to me in half the amount of time that he originally anticipated, all for a reasonable price. The amp now sounds amazing and the buzzing is gone completely. Ill definitely be coming back if I ever need more amp work done.
Called Jim at Amphead after finding out a Mesa Mark IV I purchased was non functional. He promptly returned my call, gave me advice on the amp, and gave me a ballpark estimate for the repair costs. I dropped the amp off and 2 weeks later (most of that wait time was due to a backordered part from Mesa) it was back in my hands and sounding good as new, my total bill was well under $300 for parts and labor and I think that is extremely reasonable.
I brought in a 70s era Gibson PA head that hissed and popped so bad I couldnt move a knob. Jim did a fantastic job cleaning and repairing it. It now sounds great. He kept me informed throughout the entire process and finished the repair ahead of schedule. I really appreciate the work done and highly recommend them!
A+ Excellent amp repair tech!I brought in my 1961 Fender Tremolux to have it fully serviced and completely gone through to insure safety and reliability when I play. I told them I would like all the original parts back that were replaced, and he saved all of them for me. He also took before/after pictures of the circuitry for me which I meant to ask for but forgot and he did it anyway without my request. That was really cool of him to do.Communication was very quick, and the amp repair work was finished quickly ahead of the 2-3 weeks originally stated when I dropped the amp off.Very happy overall. The Amp sounds amazing with no issues at all.
I recently sent my 1957 Fender Princeton to Amphead for a full restoration and overhaul.Jim did an amazing job and was great with communication throughout the process with loads of options and info on everything from speaker options to tube selection and tonal differences of the tubes.Im very happy with the amp and will be sending my other amps and guitars to Amphead in the future.
Jim is a true professional at his craft. I brought in my early 90s Deville for repairs and maintenance, when i got it back it sounded better than i ever remembered it sounding. Jim kept me in the loop every step of the way and provided excellent advice. From here on in these are my new amp guys!
I had two amps that were unuseable. The fender concert From the 80s and a jcm 2000 dsl 401. I took them to Jim at amohead. Not only is that fender glorious. The clean is sparkling and the reverb is legendary fender. The distortion channel was never anything to write home about but now you can actually dial in a good time. Input 1 is louder and gainer. Input 2 is light breakup. From unusable to nice. The Marshall is classic rock and Gary moore tone in a box. Thanks Jim
Super great experience. The guy, Jim, was super helpful and really nice, he did excellent work, he finished ahead of schedule, and for such quality work it is very affordable. Overall an excellent experience and well worth it if you need guitar repair. Will definitely be going to amphead when ever I need something fixed.
Brought him brand new sovtek tubes and went home with my old cheap groove tubes
Fixed my amp! Alot less than I anticipated!
Quality amp repair at a reasonable price. Excellent service, my amp sounds great.
Drove all the way from Lincoln City to get my little precious amp fixed and I am SO Glad I did. Thank you Jim & Melody for being Super Friendly, Completely Honest & Fair! and Knowing what you are doing! I feel very lucky the first place I went to they were Professional! Highly Recommend!!
Great shop with very knowledgeable technician and Hes also a very good guitarist
I brought in an AC15 and a mustang that have both been in desperate need of tuneups for at least the last 7 years. They sound and play better than new. Thanks, Jim!
Fixed up my old, broken AC15 like new. Its never sounded better.
And have lots of amplifiers and guitars work done there they always do the professional courteous job
Jim was great from the first phone call. I appreciated that he asked clarifying questions when I was describing the problem with my amp. His service was quick and the work was great.
Jim is a pleasure to work with. He answered all my questions prior to bringing in my amp head as this was the first time I’ve needed one of my amps serviced. Had my Marshall JVM 210H in and fixed in a timely matter! Very excited and beyond happy with the results. I am planning to take in my other amps for service. You’ve got my business!
Ive had 3 70s vintage tube amps rebuilt by Amphead in the last year - separately over time. Marshall and Fender. This establishment is of a declining number of electrical engineers who REALLY understand tube technology, and can dig deep. My recommendation: if you want a tune-up or the resurrection of a vintage tube treasure, get on the Amphead schedule ASAP.
I went to this shop to get a handle for my hand built speaker cab. Im new to customizing amps and asked a question about swapping tubes in my amp. I was told theyre proprietary and couldnt be swapped out. Ive since learned this is not true, so either they lied or just simply didnt know and made so something up. Either way, earned one star!
Jim is the best. My old Marshall was not rocking and now it is amazing. So good. This dude knows amps and will make yours sound better than you thought possible. I cant wait for another one of mine to break down so I can go to his RAD shop and hang out in this sanctuary of tonal nirvana.
Jim Taylor and Amphead excel at providing top quality repair. I never have to question my gear after Amphead servicing. A clean shop and a cool vibe. Repairs and mods and some rock and roll attitude!!!
Jim is a very nice straight shooter, tells the truth even if it doesnt make any money. I will be back again whenever my amps have an issue I cant solve.
Great shop great value would recommend anyone to this shop they replaced my reverb pot on my genz benz eldiablo 100 very happy with Jim Taylor am his employees thanks again Sean
Bought a Blackstar HT Stage 60 combo off Craigslist. Unfortunately with everything going on currently with Covid I trusted the seller and it was very disappointing when it wasnt working properly when i plugged it in. I wasnt sure exactly what the issue was but was thinking tubes were the culprit. I emailed Jim at Amphead with my inquiry about the shop. A quick response with a good description of what was expected price wise if tubes were the problem. As we got to chatting he was open and honest that it may be something besides or in conjunction with a tube issue. He also asked me what dollar amount I would like a call if the work got to that point. I was worried honestly not knowing what exactly was wrong. I read the reviews but I was nervous the amp was going to be a super expensive fix. I got the call a little less than a week after the drop off which was set up for our current situation to make it safe and easy. There was another issue besides the tubes. He explained very well what was done to fix the amp and the final total was very reasonable and finding honest and clean work with excellent customer care is always killer. The Blackstar now sounds fantastic!!! Thank you for making me a happy customer who will absolutely return when needed. Amphead is tops!
Jim at Amphead installed some pickups and set up my guitar for me and he did a great job. Fair prices and honest. I had guitar back in a week. He thought that I may need new nut but was able to make the adjustment without it and saved me some money. Highly recommend. go again anytime I need something done on the guitar
I brought in my treasured guitar from childhood, with a decent list of updates / fixes needed. Jim was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the process, even when I (more than once) asked for something impossible. He helped me make the right decisions for my goals, and the end result is PERFECT. I literally could not be happier. Also, his soldering skills are on point. Go see Jim!
If you use any type of guitar, commercial sound, or studio amplifiers, and need service or repair, Amphead has you covered!Excellent diagnostics, fast turnaround, friendly professional technicians, and affordable prices.Centrally located near I-205 Foster Road exit in Southeast Portland
No question this is a great place to get your gear fixed. Jim is an absolute gentleman, so I dont know what the ONE detractor doesnt understand. I took in my British made AC15 for a going through and he put it back in awesome working order. He even made sure to demonstrate in front of me that it was good to go. I will recommend Jims shop to everyone I know. And...Melody is cool too!
Work was done ahead of schedule. Price was more than fair. Great people who generally appreciate your business that enjoy what they do.
Bought a new amp from Amphead and It’s amazing!
Like others have mentioned, Jim is both very courteous and knowledgeable. He fixed my Marshall JCM600 quickly and at a very reasonable price. Ive found my long-term, go-to spot for amp/guitar repairs.
I consistently find Jim at Amp Head to be a great resource for when I need amp work done; he is very experienced, professional and conscientious. I am only writing this in defense of this last negative post from Neanderthal huck. I think its fairly obvious who it is that needs an overhaul on their people skills...
Great guy, really knows his stuff, and comes highly recommended by everyone I know. My amp needed a lot of work, and he let me know about every step he took to fix it! Now I know more about my amp, and she sounds great!
I took my Marshall JVM 210C which had some electrical issues. Nothing major. Jim was courteous, professional and did a great job on the amp. Repairs done in time and also notified me when done. Definitely planning to use Amphead for any future repairs.
If its broke they can fix it. If it just needs time up or modification they can do that too. O er 2 decades serving the rock community.
My amp was in rough shape. A friend accidentally snapped off a knob while, simultaneously, spilling their full beer all over my Peavy. Yup...Anyhow, with some skilled tinkering and cleaning Jim brought my amp back to pristine sound quality.
Amazing work and I wouldn’t go anywhere else!
Their service and quality lives up to their sparkling reputation. Highly recommended for professional amplifier repair.
Dropped my Carvin V3 off with Jim for a once over/retube. My amp had issues so it took two weeks for diagnosis. Jim was expeditious in replies to my emails both prior to dropping it off and during the repair process. The price was very fair when it was done and the deposit for diagnosis was cheaper than anyone else in town. Thanks Jim! Amp sounds better than before and works like a champ (not a fender champ)!
Hands down, the best guitar and amp repair shop in town. Super cool and respectful. They really listen and want to help.
Jim Taylor has been an integral part of Portlands music community for over 20 years and is very knowledgeable about music gear and repair.
Top notch all the way.
Great people and they know their stuff!
I went in with my garaged Fender blues jr. Many problems. Thought it was a money pit and a lost cause. Jim worked his magic. New cannabis rex speaker and some reverb... I thought it was a bit darker than i wanted it. Played it for 15 minutes... I think i found my sound! Thanks JIM. Excellent and made me want to pick up this dusty guitar and hear that TONE. Dont rush perfection.
Came in to get some work done on a vintage sunn amp. First thing he did was laugh and shake his head several times at the state. I take it into an expert and this is how he treats a new customer. When I called him out on belittling me he wipe the grin off his face and said, No, no thats not what I am doing, but since you said you are getting a bad vibe Im going to just turn you away now. Only intelligent thing you did business wise. Disrespectful and rude guy. Cool is an attitude that you dont know. You can inform without being a jerk, but I suppose the fact that you are way out SE working alone behind a constantly locked door should have been a tell that you dont work well with others. Not saying you dont know what youre doing, just saying your people skills need an overhaul.
Jim has worked on my gear for the last year, 54 gibson es175, vintage 71 fender thinline, 67 hagstrom 3,vintage 78 telecaster, 69 RI thinline telecaster, 86 pink paisley telecaster, and 68 fender twin reverb, and just finished a custom acrylic telecaster body and did fret work along with installing joe bardin pickups. Jim is very professional, and knows his work in depth, turn around is usually a week to ten days dont want anyone else working on my gear. thanks amphead !!!! Terry O gresham oregon
Best in Portland. Hands down.
Jim is the best!
Thee best!
It rocks
