Will definitely be back to Whistle Stop Trains for my next model train purchase (very soon).Theres always some trepidation in learning a new hobby. I have been considering a model train set for a long time, I finally decided to try to piece together a functional set, with the intent to switch to DCC once I get the hang of track laying and wiring. I had pieced together some data and ideas from the web, but I had a few questions to make sure I knew what I was doing. The first store I went to said they didnt have time, and theres resources available online. While true, I really needed advice from experienced people. My girlfriend told me about Whistle Stop Trains. I was excited to try again, and this place did not disappoint. Charlie guided me to a quality used engine, power pack, and the right switches so I could figure out wiring. I had it set up the first night. Thanks for taking the time Charlie! Ive found my new hobby.

I love this place friendly employees they have pretty much anything that you need INCL hundreds of decals and paint lots of pass car detail parts incl interiors all I can say is that you need to visit them.Great placeThank you guys

So this review is a long time coming, I never turned Charlie in for what he did because of peer pressure at the time.Back in 2004 Charlie Lecain employed one of my then friends and paid him under the table for years, committing tax evasion and breaking employment laws. Also, I handed him a box of trains and rails to sell and he said he would give me part of the profits, but instead he pocketed the cash and gave me nothing.If hes still doing the same shady practices, I hope he gets caught. I never forget someone whos wronged me.

Holy tight! Tried numerous times to make deals on USED stock theyve had in display cases for months if not years. Owner never wants to speak directly and has a bottom line of retail. Tightest train store Ive ever seen when it comes to used/sold as is items. They do have a nice selection however.

Very helpfull staff, good selection, and prices, would reccomend for anyone looking at getting into the hobby of model railroading!

A well stocked train and model railroaders hobby shop. Inventory included engines and rolling stock in many scales and guage, tools, detail parts, books, magazines, DVD videos, and much more. Definitely deserves 5 stars. I enjoyed my visit to this hobby shop.

What is there to say? The best full service model railroad store in Portland. Every scale, super knowledgeable sales staff (all train buffs), a well stocked store with trains and accessories galore!

My family lives in Central Oregon, and we took a day trip to Portland. First stop was Whistle Stop as my 9-year-old son is looking to create his first HO layout. The inventory was beyond my expectations, and the staff was INCREDIBLY helpful and knowledgable. They took the time looking for a specific type of car my son was looking for, and they answered all of my questions. This may have been our first visit, but certainly not our last.

Definitely a great place to go if you are looking for anything related to tThe train hobby.

There is alot of good HO scale trains here. Good deals in the discount rack. They have trainset for kids to watch and push buttons to make them move but they are models, not wooden trains to play with.

I drive from Salem once to twice a month to go to this store. They are very knowledgeable, willing to help with problems such as DCC that didn’t start or weren’t purchased from their store, and honestly seem concerned about you as a customer.This is a serious model train shop, and I am glad I found it.

When we dropped off our old train engine to be worked on four weeks ago they told us three weeks. Now we were told it will be another 4 to 6 weeks. The technician was barely able to find the train we dropped off. I was glad we had taken pictures of it when we dropped it off. Update: the technician got right to work on the train after my phone call and it was ready the next day.
