Im getting old, so Im old enough to remember Thomas Guides. These were great maps of your city with a great index. A must-have for anybody out and about before GPS. Even with GPS, I think that there is still a place for quality maps. The Thomas Guide ceased publication some years ago and the nice people at Pittmon have created their own of Portland. It has the right level of detail and the printing is excellent. So if youre a geezer like me and still want a high-quality, accurate map of the city, head over to Pittmon.
My partner and I love to explore one or two new wild areas per year. After searching on my own after turning down help (one of these times Ill succeed) I ask the wonderful woman who works there for what I need. 9 times out of 10 she finds it in under a minute and Im on my way.
No maps! Ive bought maps there for years. Today I went in looking for Oregon and Washington atlases. They only had Arizona! The woman I asked about it told me theyre not going to be ordering maps any more. Unless youre having a special map printed, its like the Monty Python cheese shoppe now.
