Organized & efficient service from the hostess and bartender. It was full w/an hour wait in the cafe but we were offered immediate bar seating which we took. Covid protocols were followed with spacing and masks. Excellent experience all around at 2pm on a Fri afternoon. Food was delicious. We had bread & butter, salad, wine and cake. Everything was delicious. Highly recommend.
The passion fruit dessert was a sweet way to end the evening. The bourbon chocolate bomb was too rich for my taste though. The reason I gave this establishment 4 stars and not 5 is because of the horrifically disgusting smell that was coming from somewhere around the corner while dining outside. It smelled like a dead animal and just ruined the entire atmosphere.
Wonderful experience, dining here on our trip to Portland earlier this month! We were sad to see reduced variety of pasta dishes on the menu due to the pandemic, but nonetheless the food was amazing and the noodle was very fresh and of high quality. The fries were to die for too. The service was excellent too and we felt well served.Good vibes, situated at good location of Nob Hill, loved the atmosphere and sunshine coming in. Parking can be hard to find on street.
We went to Papa Haydn just for the desserts! As always, they’re packed and bustling. But not to worry, they do maintain safe social distancing and the staff wear masks. It’s a chill, upscale place to hangout!Well we got the cheesecake, the triple chocolate cake, German chocolate cake and the café au chocolate! The cheesecake was subtle and nice. There cafe au chocolate was a bit too sweet for me but the triple chocolate was nice. The best is the German chocolate though 😍The French fries were a nah for me. Also we got our kid a cheese grilled sandwich and he liked it. And they put him on a high kid chair and gave him sketch and colors to play with. 😋It’s become one of our favorite spots now!
Wonderful location for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have pastries that are super decadent too!! I took my team here for a Christmas dinner to say thank you for a super productive year. The food and service was fantastic. And we had a coffee martini to close out the evening that was absolutely fantastic. Such a great location right in the heart of all of the action on 23rd.
This review is for the dessert Passion only. I ordered 2 for takeout and oh my goodness they were AMAZING. The bottom includes a thin layer of chocolate cake, which I usually dont like but in this case it was so minimal I didnt mind. The middle of the dessert is a fluffy cream and topped with a sweet gel. Will definitely be back for an encore. 4 stars because $11 for such a small dessert is kind of excessive, especially for a place that isnt really high-end.
Heard the hype but sad to report that my first experience with their food was very very disappointing and underwhelming. The dressing was flavorless and bland, there was only 2 pieces of tiny anchovies, the butter lettuce was wilted, there was only about 4 pieces of lettuce in a $14 entree salad, and lastly the salmon was tiny, stale, and hard.I gave 2 stars because 1 star is for the waitress who took my order she was AMAZING, she gave me a free cookie because the manager took back my to go order to the kitchen and I ended up waiting way too long for my order to come out.The other star is because the staff are still wearing masks (as an immunodeficient individual I appreciate this
The cafe au chocolate was devine. The blackberry cheese cake was pretty good but a little bland after biting into the cafe au chocolate.Either way you cant go wrong.Service is a bit slow sure to COVID-19 but if rather be safe and i appreciate the precautions they are taking to keep their employees and customers safe
Had the lamb shank. Wow! Well worth the price! Not overdone or too rare. A decent cup of coffee and a brookie topped off my meal. Took home a slice of German Chocolate cake because I had it before and loved it and wasnt sure when I would be back. Delicious!!
What can I say, they always deliver a great experience. Ask for a side of the pears soaked in red wine.
Made a reservation for 4 on Friday at 11:30 am. Yes, that’s the time they just open the door, so there’s empty inside. We checked in and they gave us a table we didn’t like. We asked if we can change a table since there’s still lots of empty tables. The girl said those tables were for the people who made reservations. I was like, what? We have a reservation too. But she said, when we made a reservation, the system would automatically range a table. That’s totally a lie because we had been there lots of times, and it was okay for us to choose tables before, then why it couldn’t be done this time? We left to Urban Steel. It’s new but it was really good too.
We waited 45 min to be seated for dessert and once we had it I told my husband I would have waited an hour and 45 min for it!!!! I have never in my life had anything better. Is it crazy to drive from Eugene to Portland for dessert because I see this happening in my near future. I will make a reservation next time. I cant wait to try one of everything!!!
If this place ever closes, then shoot me because a world without Papa Hayden is not right....Ive been going there for over 40 years but its been a while since I moved unfortunately out of state. I had a dream that I was there having that tall fruity meringue whipped cream dessert with tiny splatters of chocolate and I woke up crying because I miss it so much. Love, love, love them.
Their dessert is out of this world. I cannot attest to the food, but cake. Heavenly. Got a lemon chiffon, chocolate, and carrot cakes to take home. Each was phenomenal, although the lemon was perfectly light for hot weather. Run here now. Do not wait.
We havent been to Papa Haydn in a decade.....but the food is as fresh and flavorful as ever. Dessert was splendid. Cocktails were perfect. The customer service could not have been more gracious. We wont wait another 10 years. :-)
They have great options for lunch, dinner and especially, desserts.Food is excellent and fair price, but the service in one of the restaurants, which has a large outdoor area for consumption, was not very good.It was a good place!
I drive 2+ hrs just to eat here. I love the dinner options, drinks, and of course the dessert! It is such a cute intimate setting perfect for a date, lunch with a friend or quiet family outing. Is kid friendly!
Their desserts are very good, great presentation, sometimes a little overpriced, but the taste is really good.
This is a review for Papa Haydns NW location. We purchased three desserts and coffee to go last week and were incredibly disappointed. The sponge in two of the desserts was chalky and tasteless and the butter cream was hard and inedible. We also purchased two coffees to go with the desserts and they were served and cold and tasted like old coffee. The kicker was we asked for to go utensils, and the server confirmed they would be provided, but when we opened the bag after walking to a park a mile away, utensils were not in the bag. We used to go to Papa Haydns several times a year when we lived in NW, but will not make the effort to go there again.
The five star rating is specifically for the apricot white velvet cake. The cocktails, chocolate cakes, and service were all good, but I can’t imagine improving this specific menu item. I think it’s a must try for anyone in the Portland, Oregon area, even if you can’t make it here in time for dinner entrees. If I could eat this cake for every meal, believe me, I would :)
I really wanted to love my meal here, but it completely lacked flavor and the meat was difficult to get done. Ordered the smoked pork loin that wasnt cooked well - tough and chewy piece of meat with minimal smoked flavors, and the rhubarb sauce it was paired with was much too sugary. The only saving grace of the dish was the gruyere and leek bread pudding on the side which delicious.
First time eating dinner. So good. I thought their desserts were great. The food is amazing. You must go.
Please update your google information, it still says “Dine-In” online when you’re doing pick up only. We drove an hour to come have dessert at your well known shop. I know COVID is making it hard for all of us and that times are confusing, but it’s frustrating when shops don’t advertise properly. Especially when it’s so easy to change and we all depend on the internet so much. Very disappointed.
Excellent place to get dessert and coffee to top off a great evening. Came here with friends after late night steak and whiskey. This place has an excellent selection of cakes and makes great coffee as well. We all underestimated the portions of sweets that would be served and that is a fine problem to have. I think we may share next time to avoid feeling guilty about finishing such a large portion of sweets individually, but well get over it Im sure. Had a great experience here and will be back
Ive tried both the carrot cake and the Mt. Adams cake. Both were well made but exceedingly dry/stale. For 11 bucks + tip I dont expect what _used_ to be a good cake.
The passion pastry and the cappuccino were really good, but the mocha was not.
Great food, atmosphere, and staff! I dont think anyone needs to be told this place is definitely about the desserts! Chocolate is a given, but every taste is given a moment to shine. If you get a chance to visit, do it!
Service was top notch, but the same wasnt true of the desserts. I tried Mt. Adams Cake, which, I am assuming, was made well but was super stale. It tasted like something left in the refrigerator for days on end.
Excellent service but my hamburger had a bit too much salt. The rest of the food was very good.
Tasty desserts that weren’t overly sweet. decent food but nothing to write home about. seating was in Jo’s for now which was still nice
I have had Papa Haydn in sellwood many times which is always top notch. However when that location was closed due to the heat wave we decided to try the location off of 23rd. Not sure what was going on, and while not bad, the food just did not seem to be at the same level as the sellwood location. Though, the deserts seemed unchanged and delicious as always.
We had an amazing lunch. Everything on the menu sounded great. I settled for the pasta dish and it was excellent.
We were in a huge hurry to catch a train. Neednt have been. Amtrak makes it so hard to track trains. You need an app? Gimme a break. Google should be sufficient. Anyway the German Chocolate cake and Cherry Forest were fantasti, and the service efficient given our circumstances.
Let’s talk about the amazing beverages and dessert here! Fantastic place to visit. The environment is welcoming, warm and cozy. Fantastic service, and quote the variety of delectable desserts! Highly recommend a stop. My favorite part - they have all menu options well-labeled, and many gluten free dessert options!! All pictured in this review are Gluten free!!
Meh ... dont believe the hype. This used to be the place to go for a celebration - for a delicious slice of heavenly birthday cake or dessert. Not so much these days. :(
Good drinks and I had the pork loin. They have fantastic desserts save room for them.
The food and service were amazing! My server, Noah, was very informative and gave me some great suggestions.I ordered the pork loin because it was something different than I usually order and it was 100% the best decision! The pork loin was very juicy and the savory bread pudding with gruyere cheese was beyond what I expected! The chocolate moussey dessert was also very good! Next time Im in Portland Ill definitely be back. Highly recommended!
Sweet tooth galore! I came for the food and stayed for their deserts. The have a wonderful menu thats full of sweet, mouthwatering deserts. The atmosphere is wonderful for a nice casual date and the cocktails are savory as well. Would suggest!
I ordered takeout today and was extremely displeased with the service. I arrived within the time frame that they gave me for my food to be done. I was given my slice of cake and told that I should wait outside and they would bring me my food as soon as it was done. I waited outside for 20 minutes watching food pile up inside with no one getting their food delivered to them. I stood in line to go back inside and told the server that I had been waiting for 20 minutes outside. They apologized and handed me my food that had been sitting on a table getting cold. When I got the food home it was obviously cold. On top of that, the pork loin was raw in the middle. Even the dessert was ruined as we found a hair in the middle of it that obviously did not belong to me or my partner. The only redeeming quality was that when I called back to the restaurant to express my displeasure, they granted me a full refund without discussion. Very disappointing experience, I will not be returning.
Very impressed every time I eat here. Excellent food, and service. And the desserts are divine. Highly recommend eating here!
We did the dessert to go option, its always a great treat for the special occasion!
Dinner, dessert, drinks and service were all excellent
We ordered delivery from Papa Haydn for the first time. We used to go to Papa Haydn in NW Portland pre-COVID fairly often. The delivery items were just as good as in-person.This time we ordered Mint Chocolate Cake and a Bourbon Ball. The Mint Chocolate cake was amazing! It was so moist, it was melt in your mouth good. The mix of mint and chocolate is really good. The Bourbon Ball was great. Also very moist, flavorful, and rich.I would highly recommend both the Mint Chocolate cake and the Bourbon Ball to anyone.I recommend Papa Haydn’s to everyone!
Came here one evening just for dessert. We sat outside and enjoyed the evening!
Papa Haydns has been a go to place for desserts for myself and my family for over a decade. I have never been disappointed with anything Ive ever ordered from there.
This place is dessert 🍰 heaven. Anything you could ever want is here at this restaurant. Great French inspired food. Croque Monsieur (ham and cheese sandwich) is amazing. There cheese pasta (with handmade pasta) is a grown up mac and cheese. Atmosphere is open and friendly. Get there early, could be busy.
Great with a reservation - did not have to wait. Only went for dessert, which is good and reasonably priced for a decently high end dessert. Its a little egregious charging $3.25 for a soda and $3 to add a single scoop of ice cream to a dessert, and thats my only reason that they get 4 stars instead of 5.
Staff nice but way to expensive for a hamburger and chicken sandwich w dessert$70. Outrageous
Hands down one of the best places to eat! There desserts are seriously amazing! As wells beautifully decorated!!! Must go check it out!!!:) 💘 😻
Food, drinks & dessert are great. Seating is in Jos bar next door which was odd, assuming its because of the extreme harassment customers receive from the tent outside on the corner.
Spontaneous dessert stop. Never disappoints! Great service, incredible bakes.
Great desserts for any occasion. Even though a little pricey fully work the price. Its also great for any type of person who likes delectable pies, cakes, and more!
Still very good after all these years!
What a lovely experience. The food was delicious, portions are perfect and the service is friendly and accommodating. You have to try the tangerine cheesecake and cacho de oro for dessert!
Good food, selection of desserts is great as is atmosphere for an afternoon tea
If 2021 is the summer of “personality”…it’s partly due to my codependent relationship with their desserts. They are just too good. I CAN’T QUIT YOU!!!
My favorite places for dessert! Absolutely comforting, delicious dessert and decadent flavors to try on! The hot chocolate with marshmallows was top notch! The marshmallow was buttery and melting to the core! The vanilla creme brulee had the perfect sugar char and smooth as a solo custard! The strawberry passion macaroon is absolutely my favorite! Definitely should try it out!
Tl; dr: Good sweets, great serviceThis review is for afternoon tea only.Stopped by for a breather post wandering around the shops on 3rd, and was pleasantly surprised. We went in on a whim, really, having noticed the amount of people in the place. While the person seating us was professional but curt, the server was delightful and we certainly couldnt fault her performance at all.The cake was too sweet for me (but then I dont eat cakes, so am not a good judge), however my friend declared it delicious. Other good looking baked goods were also available in the display case. All round good choice if, like us, you want to stop for bubbles and cake!
Great location kind of pricy for what you get.
I absolutely loved the Hunters Pasta dish! The oven-dried tomatoes were phenomenal. Their outdoor dining is lovely and is set up with heaters. I also liked their QR scanning menu. It was a great experience!
My favorite luncheon spot! I love going here for lunch and dessert with my girlfriends. Sharffen Berger bomb is AMAZING.
Lovely Ambience and great services. The desserts were cherry on the cake!! Must try them
Great desserts and macarons are always good. Varied wine selection and the servers give great advice for pairings
Dessert case. Enough said.
