Great place to grab a cup coffee and study or read. They have a small, but very inviting outdoor patio that is shaded πThey brew with Intelligentsia coffee, which is quite exceptional coffee, if you are familiar with quality coffee brands.Unfortunately, the baristas come off as snobs about the way they make their coffee; this made the experience at Big Dog less memorable. You donβt need to be snobby to be knowledgeable about coffee.Overall, the coffee was good and I would maybe go back, but the customer service was not pleasant.Everything else aside, they do have cool art and this coffee house interior is very comfortable like a coffee house should be.
Would have given a 5 but the woman working behind the counter was not friendly and whenever we ordered, she acted like we didnt know what we were ordering. She looked confused and had to repeat back in a different way what we already said. The guy with her was already starting our order as soon as we said it so dont know why she had that look on her face.We liked the decor of the place and the different table and chairs set up. Lots of seating for a small place. Theres also seating outside. We ordered the mango and pineapple smoothie which was just okay and 2 coffees which tasted better. We werent impressed and probably wont return.
Tried this new place with my friend and I loved it!!! Such a cozy area and close to everything in the south side. I had the honey iced latte highly recommended. Also the salted Carmel blondie was awesome. I will be back again
Big Dog Coffee offers a great studying environment and very good coffee. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. All the food I have tried so far from them has been very good. I have no complaints. I recommend their mochas and lattes as they have a great balance of subtle sweetness and caffeine.
Awesome awesome awesome yogurt parfait! Fresh homemade yogurt and all the toppings! Yumm!
Coffee was great. Large tea selection. Was a bit slower than other places but enjoyed it thoroughly
The drinks, the atmosphere, and the sentiment behind this dog friendly cafe are all outstanding. Both the coffees and the teas taste excellent, as well as the small baked goods available to purchase (I had the lemon poppy seed bread and it was delicious). Both the inside and outside areas are beautifully arranged and are therefore great settings for instagram pictures, dates, or even long hours of studying. A must if youre in the area and in need of refreshments.
I love this coffee shop and their lemon poppyseed bread is so good! I enjoyed their lavender latte back when they had it and am looking forward to trying their pumpkin spice when it comes back! π
Best coffee and a cute inviting interior and exterior
Great atmosphere! Love the decor and the outside seating area! Great Coffee β π
I love the atmosphere of the coffee shop, they also make a delicious maple latte and have great carrot cake
Cool place. Not too many places sell Kenyan Nyeri coffee.
I have been a frequent visitor while working from home and I absolutely love it here. They have an amazing back patio :)
This review has nothing to do with the coffee, the atmosphere, only specifically the attitude of the employees. They were honestly so rude and didnβt want to give me the time of day, acting like me being there was the biggest pain of their lives (I literally ordered a latte, nothing crazy). The employee was extremely snobby and made me feel uncomfortable being at the business. Also, keep in mind, this was my second time going here and my first experience was also like this. I thought everyone has a bad day, so perhaps that was it. After a second experience of utter rudeness, I will absolutely never go again. Wouldnβt recommend to anyone who is pleasant and values kindness.Cupka is right across the street and they are fabulous! Would highly recommend if youβre looking for delicious and friendly service!
Big Dog embodies the essence of why you should stop going to Dunkin or Starbucks. The staff is kind and genuine, while still being fast. The coffee is way ahead of anything youll get for the price elsewhere. Theres art thats full of life and local. The cherry on top is this beautiful patio area out back. Bid Dog Coffee is coffee with character and identity, which is unfortunately quite rare.
Loved the coffee and the atmosphere. Much bigger space than expected. Clean, fast and cozy. Great macchiato....my kids loved the small sections with Childrens books. We will definitely be back. Great street parking, cool old building. Nice variety of choices on oatmeal bar. All ppl were there young to old, loved it.Baristas dont really talk, smile,or say thank you,but the coffee was so good I still had to give 5 stars.
Great coffees and teas, cookies are to die for. Favorite coffee shop maybe in all of Pittsburgh I love sitting in here
Amazing coffee with seasonal latte syrups. just missed lavender season though
Great ownership. I placed a to go order for a dozen guests and he hooked me up with an airport and a full carton of cream.
I like this place because their coffee is good and they supply Pages Dairy with coffee!
Nice staff. Other than that nothing special. Good place to come alone and do some work. Quiet.
The place and vibe are amazing, food and coffee were on point. Recommend
Went to Big Dog back in early 2016. I didnβt know much about coffee other than anything outside of a pot of coffee was fancy. Starbucks was really my only experience with coffee shops. So I ask if they have a drink and the lady working rudely goes this isnβt Starbucks. And at this point Iβm already nervous bc I donβt know what anything on the menu means. So I just ordered like a cappuccino and have never been back. I now go to a different coffee shop that is more laid back and less snobby about coffee culture. My point is this could have been a chance to teach someone about the different options and explain to someone the ins and outs of basic styles of ways to prepare espresso. Instead I felt insulted bc I didnβt know how to properly order my coffee.
Caramel lattes was delicious. Cherry scone was delicious. The artist they feature does great work. Parking isnβt great, but itβs Pittsburg.
Just found this place. Gorgeous outdoor seating area. Comfy, warm interior. Beautiful espresso machine. Friendly barista made one of the best Lattes I have ever had. Will definitely be back!
Simply the best on the South Side.
My favorite spot in Pittsburgh to grab a cup of coffee. Dogs are welcome! The owner, Nikolay, is one of the friendliest people you will meet. Remembered my name after my very first visit. Also love all the Baron Batch artwork hanging up inside.
One of my favorite coffee spots in Pittsburgh! Great coffee - my favorite is the honey latte. Awesome baked goods too.
Love the vibes of this place!! Excellent coffee, excellent service
Great local cafΓ© with a great selection and comfortable vibe. Will definitely be back.
Some coffee shops just have a soul. Big Dog is one of those places. From the care restoring the 100+ year-old space, to the coffee, to the staff, theres no place Id rather be.
Always very friendly and awesome to my dog! Best coffee shop in Pittsburgh!
I had a great experience, there Iced tea was fantastic and had spectacular experience
Love this little spot. Cozy environment and very good coffee and tea program.
Love this place, great quality (4 shots of espresso in large iced latte). Im just sad because I can never find a place to sit inside, it is so popular!!
Nice Neighborhood Coffee HouseThe normal coffee offerings of coffee, expresso, and tea. I thought the coffee was on the better side. There was a nice selection of breakfasty type things, and an oatmeal bar. I did not have anything to eat, but it looked better than the normal muffin fare.Nice feel to this coffee shop. There are plenty of tables for working, chairs for sitting and reading. Different space for sitting. It was busy on Saturday morning, but did not feel crowded.Service was friendly.Prices were higher than average for my brewed coffee. I dont mind paying more for a local place.
I canβt say enough good things about Big Dog Coffee. I am traveling back to Pittsburgh for the week and have made it a point to stop here every day. Their lattes are delicious and the baristas are very personable. I canβt recommend Big Dog Coffee Enough!
Super cool vibe, super friendly staff. I loved all the paintings hanging inside, whoever that artist is ROCKS. The coffee was good, and the prices are fair. I will definitely return when Im in this area.
Love this place. Best coffee in Pittsburgh!!!
A great Pittsburgh coffee shop with above average coffee as well as a huge assortment of tea. Tucked away in South side it has a fantastic intimate outdoor seating area as well as plenty of comfortable seating inside. Walking through the shop is like stepping into an art museum with paintings done by Pittsburghs own Barron Batch, adorning every wall. The artist also frequents the coffee shop and does many of his infamous free painting drop offs as well so you may find a beautiful work of art to accompany your Saturday morning coffee. So come to Big Dog not only for the coffee, but the art and aesthetic as well.
Good coffee and oatmeal.
It is a nice location. The people are friendly and the coffee is nice. People were masked. The patio is wonderful.
Bad vibes; cramped patio; yuppie atmosphere; rude service
Delicious coffee and kind service. The decor is funky and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Ive liked all the drinks Ive gotten from them and my husband really enjoys the large loose leaf tea selection. Im always happy with my experience at Big Dog Coffee. They are certainly one of the best coffee shops in South Side.
Awesome coffee and awesome service as always!
Nice staff, good coffee & a beautiful building. When Im in South Side I like to grab my coffee here.
First off--the coffee is amazing. They use Intelligentsia coffee, and its delicious. I get their cold brew, and its not just rich and smooth in flavor but its also strong to keep you going through your studies/day. They have many tables (mostly smaller for individual or pair studying), most with outlets! Theres also an outdoor section!!!
Great coffee
An interesting place thats for sure! A small and quaint coffee shop! It was rather expensive for a cold brew coffee made with almond milk and sugar free vanilla (medium size was 6$) and did not taste quite right. Rated 4 stars for the simple fact that their baked goods section looked phenomenal
Great spot, lots of tea and coffee choices, 10/10 will go again
Big Dog has the best coffee in Pittsburgh! They always make drink perfect every time and I love the friendly staff that also keeps it real. Thanks for being my work away from work and my favorite part about the neighborhood
This is an exceptional nice little coffee shop. The quality of the coffee is high and I love all the little art and decors inside. Small outside seating in the back as well. I can just recommend this place.
Thank you local guides. Would have never found this AMAZING place. Delicious in every way
Nice to be back! Great little coffee house on the Southside off Carson St. The outside is a nice retreat for those busy days!
Favorite coffee shop in the city! They have everything you need. Tea, coffee, espresso, snacks, and cool art on the walls. The baristas are always super nice. The patio is also a very relaxing place to catch some sun, whenever its actually out.
Big Dog is one of my favorite Pittsburgh coffee shops. It has some of the best coffee, as well as great tables for working spaces. During the warmer months, theres some really nice patio seating as well.
Great coffee, friendly staff, great patio outside with cover and beautiful plants and flowers.Definitely would recommend and also visit the next time we come thru Pittsburgh.
Love this place. Very nice place to grab a cup of coffee. The owners are very nice and super responsive. Coffee is great too. I love to sit and have a cup outside in the courtyard - its a great place!
Love there atmosphere and coffee
One of my favorite coffee shops in Southside. I always get a cup of their hot oatmeal from their oatmeal bar! The backyard garden is so beautiful and relaxing. Itβs the perfect place to study or catch up with an old friend.
My favorite coffee shop. Amazing Black coffee and lattes. Staff are great and nice. Sometimes very busy so you can not find a table to stay, however, thats reflect the amazing product they have.
A great outside and mellow inside. There are outdoor plugs for your computer in the summer. In the winder they have the fireplace roaring with real logs on the fire. A unique place in the evermore crowded Pittsburgh market. Plus the coffee is good. Something place who focus on atmosphere can lose sight of.
Small cozy atmosphere coupled with lots of art makes this a great place to meet for coffee! Just be aware that it is not suited for groups larger than 4 people because of limited space and seating. The coffee is good, and the service is on point at Big Dog.
This is my preferred coffee shop in Pittsburgh. Pleasant atmosphere, excellent coffee, and staff that will remember you when you return!
I live in Seattle and was visiting Pittsburgh for the weekend. I wanted a comfortable coffee shop to hang out and do some reading. I found Big Dog on a google search, and in my opinion the vibe and the quality of the coffee is up there with the best of anything Iβm used to back home! The decor and ambience give it an upscale college town feel. Not what Iβd expect in gritty blue-collar Pittsburgh and thatβs a good thing. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They have a cool outdoor patio and beautiful art on the walls. If you want good coffee and to be surrounded by intelligent, nice people, away from the brutish bros, this is your place.
Love this coffee!! The vibe of the place is off the chain and the staff talks to you like a real person. Pup friendly from what I can tell and also there is ample parking on the street. Love the vibrant feel and the fact that they are off the main drag for privacy!
Big Dog has the best oatmeal with so many options for toppings! It is a nice quiet place to hang out and have a coffee drink and enjoy the morning.
Normal coffee shop with the added effect of allowing dogs inside. Treats and water are readily available, at least in the summer. Beverages donβt do it for me. The hot chocolate and tea cool off much too fast. They have flavor, but it goes with the temperature.
9/10 cappuccinos they make me are perfect.
Great coffee filled to the brim, cozy atmosphere with vibrant local artwork. The artist can be spotted in the coffee shop at times as well.Definitely a must-go if youβre in the south side in the morning...and itβs not St Pattys Day
Have a few days off and new to town so trying out as many coffee shops as possible. So far, this is the one Iβll hit up twice due to the coffee and the warm atmosphere.
My favorite coffee shop in Pittsburgh! The atmosphere is comfortable and the people cookies are delicious. Try the chai tea latte, you wont regret it.
Nikolai the owner is always incredibly welcoming. Fantastic ambience and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They use intelligentsia coffee beans, which I love. The beans are always fresh and not over roasted for consistency like some of the big roasters out there. Baron Batch artwork on the walls accents the rustic fixtures throughout. FYI steamed milk beverages (lattes etc) are steamed at a slightly lower temperature for maximum flavor, if you like your beverages at a higher temp simply ask for extra hot.
This place may have some of the best coffee in the city (even though its not local). I also love the owner and staff here. They are so helpful and genuinely seem to care about the clientele. Great for a quick bite or breakfast to go. Atmosphere is is also a plus and they have outdoor seating. They try to accommodate dog owners as part of their theme.
Good coffee and pastries
Great coffee and efficient service
Good coffee and food. I found the service to be pretty slow. I had intended to sit down for 10 minutes to eat the bread I bought, but there were no tables available. Seems like the space could be arranged better to accommodate both the laptop warriors staking out tables for hours all alone, and the people who want to drop in and out. Overall, a nice place. I would go back when in the area.
Great little coffee shop hidden away on the Southside. Such a cozy and warm atmosphere! We visited on a warm evening and enjoyed the patio out back. My daughter had a coffee and I had herbal tea. The menu has quite a variety. The staff was friendly. It was a pleasure to visit.
The service at Big Dog is not only better than most coffee shops, it outshines most restaurants. The employees are friendly, polite, and professional. Ive visited Big Dog all hours of the day and on weekends and week days. My experiences have been consistently excellent. The seating area is always clean and organized and the coffee and pastries are always fresh. They also have a hot oatmeal bar, with over 10 select toppings, which makes for a great start to the day!
