Early morning breakfast diner. I don’t usually come to south Philly for ANYTHING. On this good Thursday I found myself waiting for a friend to finish an appt so I came to this diner. Glad I did. Great French toast. Great coffee. Customer service was great. Will be returning the next time I happen to be in South Philly.
The girls and I were in Philly for the Valentines Day weekend and this diner was literally across the street from where we were staying at. My cousin & I came in one morning to have breakfast and everything was absolutely delicious. Waffle House may have some competition on their hands. Anyway, I love diners outside of New York. Its just better. lol. Our waitress was super nice. The food was excellent. We will definitely be back. See photos attached!
Everyone who knows Goes to Melrose.Couldnt resist stopping for a late breakfast after visiting my old South Philly Stomping Grounds. Finally got to introduce my wife to this establishment although it was post fire renovation. Brought back many great memories as we sat and talked and ate a wonderful breakfast and sipped on freshly brewed coffee.
The food was good and the service was fast and efficient. Havent been here in a few years but they still have the butter cream cake. Yummy
Their old fashioned apple cake is to die for. Food and service are all great. Stop past check it out you wont be disappointed
Havent been here in years and shame on me. Im giving it 5stars from all of my past visits and all those experiences have been special to me and all the Great memories. Cant wait to get back to my roots and bring my wife here. My Wife is Italian and from Brooklyn so this will be a nice experience for this Irish Boy to bring his wife to our City. But Yo, Aint no place like South Philly and everybody that knows goes to the Melrose. See ya guys soon and love ya.
Great place dine in. It is old style flavor with the warm feeling of South Philly. I was actually there to pick up a Butter Cream birthday cake for my moms birthday. It is the original recipe they told me as the icing isnt super sweet and cake buttery and moist. I would recommend it with a cup of coffee. I am trying the cheesecake next.
My first time today and it will definitely not be my last! The worker (Becca) was super friendly and tentative with me. The food was prepared just how I ordered it and I got it in less than 5 minutes which was really fast (I was there at 9am on a Wednesday so it wasnt busy). The pancakes were so fluffy and tasted delicious! As Arnold from the Terminator movie once said Ill be back!.
Me and hubby ate here and we ordered the cheesesteak sandwich with fries. Delicious. Im hoping to be back this saturday.
Totally downhill from the old diner. Only thing positive is bakery items....still good
Legendary! Apple pie from their own tinned apples from a farm upstate. The coffee is better than anywhere else for some reason. People who have moved away from Philadelphia dream about this place.
This place got straight up greedy and cheap and are paying for it with loss of customers and workers. How many more lifetime customers do you want to really lose? Your cheesesteak was 10.50 Now it is 12.99 and had half the meat as before on top of paying the extra 2.50, tell them no onions and pickles allergic and 80% of the times the order was still messed up with onions and or pickles. On top of the steak being soggy. You lost a lifelong. Management needs to get it together over here I seen preschool ran better. You havent seen me ordering because I now go to Mi Pals where you get what you pay for
Great bakery on site. Round cake with buttercream frosting - amazing. Recommend for any celebration. Breakfast, lunch and dinner available anytime. Stop in.
Went for dinner on a Monday night food was not anything impressive. Wife had broiled flounder which was cooked fine but seasoning was 0 no salt or pepper at all had no flavor at all. I had the roast beef sandwich which was not great meat was dry. The ah jus sauce was very nice.Bathroom has stuff written all over the mirror and floor is sticky in the men’s room. Our server whom was a woman I did not get her name was the bright spot very good and nice to talk withEdit whom ever responded with there answer your a ignorant person I went to multiple places while in the city and not 1 location I went had graffiti in the bathroom so maybe you should check it more often I will never return to your establishment with that attitude and spend my hard earned money
Everything you want from an American diner. Quick breakfast combo. Order messed up, but in your benefit with extras. Bottomless coffee. Pack a day waitress that calls you sweetheart. Pay on your way out. Perfect.
I was giving my daughter a ride home. When we decided to get something to eat. Im not from that part of the city but I have heard of Melrose Diner. We walked in and were greeted immediately.Had a nice meal.Spending time with my daughter was great and my experience at Melrose added to having a great day.
Wonderful service, love breakfast anytime. I had the western omelette that was delicious. Good website, designed so you can read it on phone. Most restaurants are lazy and slap a pdf of their menu, which very hard to read. Melrose Diner took the time to properly put their menu on the website.
Kim was an excellent waitress she was very polite she always check back with us to make sure we were okay the seating is very comfortable and I could see how you could stay there and just enjoy the scenery and feel of a diner and our breakfast was outstanding I had a mushroom and cheese omelette with hash browns and Beacon excellent excellent food I would recommend this place to anyone rather if you live in Philly or if youre coming from out-of-town
10/31/21...I so wanted real diner food and we opted for the Melrose Diner. It was an excellent choice. I had the creamed chipped beef and a toasted cinnamon bun. My husband had a western omelette and I did a take out ham and cheese omelette and turkey club. Everything was delicious! And yes, the takeout orders were hot and packaged nicely. Becky, our server, was so patient and nice as the place was crowded. We also had our table cleaned by this super nice gentleman, sorry, I didnt get his name; but he had on a most sharp hat. A special thank you to him for his kindness! Real, old fashioned, diner food...awesome! Thank you!The Melrose Diner is truly a classic diner. There is counter service. There are booths and the place even has its own bakery where they still make their buttercream cakes. We recently went for breakfast, sat at the counter and I had to sample a little, or I should say a lot of everything. I opted for a ham and cheese omelet, with home fries, grits and french toast. My kind of breakfast; and it was delicious! The servings are more than generous and the food was freshly made and hot and our waitress, Kristen, was so very nice. In case you get hungry, they are also open 24 hours.
The absolute best butter cream cake!!! Every year for my moms birthday Melrose Diner’s Butter Cream cake is all she wants, and if we’re not near Philly we’ll drive here anyway!!! 💛😋🎂
Great food! Great service! Great prices! We got there 15 mins before they opened & staff allowed us to come in sit down & enjoy some coffee! Will be going again soon!
Came during the re opening and the food, service and atmosphere was great. Will definitely come here again. Personal favorites are the Turkey dish and chicken francaise, along with the various soups (especially the broccoli cream and chicken noodle). Also if you visit here you have to get the butter cake and their homemade cookies, both are philly staples. My family has come here for decades and this was my first time will definitely be back.
If you’re looking for a diner in South Philly this is where you should go. My favorites are breakfast and the late night experience. The food is typical diner food that tastes good and will fill you up. The service is good. It can get slow at times. The food is reasonably priced. It’s clean, inside and out.
Good breakfast! I had eggs, Italian saugage, potatoes, and toast. Really good and good service.
Bad food. We ordered the patty melt and it literally had no salt or seasoning on the party. Horrible service. I have no idea why this place is so popular.
An excellent diner with great food, in an area easy to access by public transportation.
Came here to take my daughter to lunch I watched the lady take 4 customers order that came in after me and she still never made it to my table. After 30mins of not being acknowledged I decided to leave.
Nice place... Food was like any dinner... Features made this a 4 star dinner
PRICES WAY TO HIGH!OTHER THEN THAT A GREAT PLACE. EVERY ONE WAS FRIENDLY AND FOOD TASTES GREAT And WAS VERY CLEAN BUT 25 DOLLARS FOR BREAKFAST PLUS 5 DOLLARS TIP TO RICH FOR MY BLOOD.
Long story short, I went here at 12:30 pm today (not my first time here) and waited 20 minutes for a menu. Odd? Yes, I know. So once I get a menu, I get the “I’ll be with you guys in a second.” So I’m like okay. Time stamped now it’s 1:20 PM and I’m looking around to see if there is a lot of customers, but it’s not. Still haven’t gotten my order. So I bounce. Moral of the story, this diner is trash. Will never be eating here again.
Good experience, fast service, servers were courteous. Food was delicious.
Was ok. Didnt like the cheese spread for the french fries but otherwise was a nice establishment. Polite and courteous employees and clean too.
Hash browns are perfectly crisp. Everyone enjoyed their breakfast. Staff was friendly.
Hi, I just ordered dinner for my family. I picked it up, but it was very refreshing to see that it is open again for indoor dining. The food was excellent as ever. I grew up 1 block from Melrose, and live now 10 blocks away. It is and always will be my favorite. Thank you, Raymond Solley
Covid safety protocols in effect. Im a diner guy, the food was great, our waitress was attentive but not pushy very pleasant time. Its Monday so not busy at all. Classic diner atmosphere and the Melrose is a staple in south philly. So everybody who knows goes to Melrose
The place is grimy but the food is decent standard diner food, pretty fast for a busy time. Not a big menu
Maybe it’s because of Covid, but the food was marginal. Service could have been better as well :(. Disappointed
THE 🍗 CHICKEN 🍗 WAS FRIIED BURNT AND THE SIDES TASTE LIKE CHICKEN AND ALSO THE CHICKEN TASTE LIKE FISH!!! I GIVE THIS PLACE 0000000000000 RATING
Love Melrose cant wait till things go back to normal and its 24 hours again I miss that.
Worst experience ever. Bad food and bad waitress.
The wait staff was polite. The service was slow. The Turkey Club was eatable. The meat was very dry(not a fan). The Cheese Steak Wrap was Tastey (although .99 more for fried onions). The French Frys were the best part of both entrées. The frys were delicious. Both entrées came with half a pickel and coleslaw. Two small sodas were the beverage. The building was unique and clean.I thought the meal was about $10.00 higher than it should have been priced. City prices, I suppose.
Service was strong, food was good men’s bathroom was dirty strong urine smell tho🤢
Everything was delicious!!! Im definitely going to stop by again! Robyn was amazing at taking care of me. The orange juice was very refreshing and tasty! The omelette that I had was made of turkey sausage and cheese had home fries with green peppers and onions!!! Yuuummmm!!!🔥🔥🔥
I paid a visit to the famed Melrose Diner at 6 this morning for breakfast. This establishment is an authentic “factory manufactured” diner which was invented in this country in the second half of the 20th century and dotted the landscape from sea to shining sea.Having said this, I think it is worth it just to go there to see it and go inside for a coffee. These shiny metal monstrosities will soon disappear from the American landscape and those of us from that era will surely miss them. If you were a 21st century baby, visit now before it’s too late. The Melrose serves up a very hearty breakfast and even has a make your own omelette on their menu where you can pick your own additions to your 3 egg creation. The omelette I picked was a ham, Swiss, peppers and onions and was very light and fluffy. It was more of a home cooked variety than a standard diner fare creation. The fried potatoes are crispy and not greasy. The place is clean, the waiter a little bland, lacking much personality (maybe it was too early for him ?) and the food is better than most restaurants of this type.Gone are the old fashioned South Philly waitresses who would greet you with a smile and belt out “Whatta ya have honey ?”( They were still there when I visited in the 1990s. ).Some of that old fashioned Philly charm may be gone but The Melrose Diner is definitely still worth a visit!
My husband took me to this diner today and we were excited because of all the great reviews. And OMG this place exceeded our expectations, the food was DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!! Like everything on our plates was delicious and the waitress was so nice and kept checking on us, asking if we needed anything else. We’ve already made plans to go again very soon!!
Melrose has the best breakfast.. Waitress are awesome. Prices are great 😊
It was decent. It took a lil bit for wait staff to notice us but no big deal. Food was great. Service was good. Thanks.
Normally i eat in the morning there. But today was lunch more so dinner. I ordered a crock of french onion soup. Its appearance was perfect but it was just beef broth over cooked onions and not beget/bread.
Excellent food, great service, large portion sizes, ample parking either in the lot or on the surrounding streets. Had not been there in a while but glad I stopped while I was in the area.
The Melrose is nothing like it used to be.the food was horrible
Food is absolutely delicious and all the workers a very nice and friendly.
Best French Onion soup.Tried the (homemade) mozzarella sticks, for the first time. Awesome. & my waitress is the best!
The food was great and their strawberry cheesecake was amazing
Very nice and clean, quick service.
Everyone who knows, Goes, To Melrose ! Great diner-esq vibes and once at full tilt an even better mojo ! Great staff front to back and reasonable with good portions ! Bring ur mom in for a shake n some fries ! Oh! Do NOT forget a bag of Butter Cookies ! Too Good for words !
Quick service, nice staff, good food.
The server was very sweet and attentive.
The Best Butter Cream Cakes 🎂
I was working late in a movie and it was too late for a train or bus so I went to the Melrose Diner and the staff was excellent.
Solid menu. Food served hot and delicious. Friendly staff. Dont forget to pick up a tub of Butter Cookies. Delicious
So good we did it twice 😂 Havent been to a diner in a while. Once indoor dining was open we decided to stop in. Great of you like breakfast food anytime (like I do).
Had breakfast. Not cheap. The toast was burnt. The home fries were raw. Scrapple,Creamed Chipped Beef and Cheese omelet were all good. Great Tomato Juice.
Melrose is a great dinner. Food is good, last vist had chicken croquettes for lunch it was good and fulfilling, went to pick up birthday cake for a friend, decided to eat lunch while i was there, butter cream cakes r the best in the city, every year order them for my birthday, will be back again to order one for birthday in june try one you will not be disappointed, excellent service, thamk you Melrose.
The Melrose Diner needs some upgrading. Better lighting inside the diner would be great. It looks kind of dismal inside. I actually dined outside in their parking lot. That wasnt bad. They had a big tent for you to eat under and separate small tables to eat under with the umbrella covering. My coffee, philly cheese steak omelette and pancakes tasted awesome! The pancakes were the best, I ever tasted in a diner....👍😃!! I would go back just for the pancakes. They were fluffy, fully cooked and very moist and not dry at all! Kudos to the cooks! The only thing was the ketchup seemed a little sour, but, other than that the food was pretty good.
The breakfast is always good and the waitress was very attentive. It felt good to go back to my favorite diner.
Melrose diner is not like any other diner I’ve been too. My brother and I entered and sat down. We waited 10 minutes... a server brought the menu. Afterwards, we waited and waited and waited. We finally to decided to leave. Not going back there again.
Great service, great food. Jeanne & Chrissy are the best waitresses I ever had. So kind, friendly with beautiful smiles. I recommend eating there again. Thank you ladies, youre the best 🥪🍔🥗🍝🍽
I had breakfast and it was delicious. Great customer service.
Always good food. Nice people
I was born in Philly and I moved to Chicago a few years ago, but everytime I come home Melrose is on the menu. My family has grown up and now I cant come home unless they know that we are going to have breakfast at Melrose dinner, they have become a part of our family tradition when ever we come home to Philly. Chicago love
If you grew up on the south side of the city this was the diner to go to after a night at the bar
Great food, great service, and I got a job! Not that that matters 😂
The food was good and the service was great. I even had a take out order for later. The butter cream cakes was just right not to sweet and not dry. I will be back. Social distancing was in place mask was required.
Food and service both good.
Cool place. Its not in the best neightborhood, but parking is easy bc they have a small lot. Diner was fairly empty when we ate there. Staff was not overly friendly, but did their jobs well. They have a massive menu--to be expected at a good ole dinner. All the panini style sandwiches are amazing
Very friendly waitresses...food was excellent
Love the staff.. just wish they would put the condiments back on the table a little packages of ketchup and salt dont do it other than that very friendly Im very clean
A favorite with the locals for breakfast. They do a good job with the classics.Try the local favorites scrapple or pork roll.
I always get a butter cream cake for my birthday ❤ They are sooo good!!
They are so nice and courteous and the food is good and always clean
Annie the waitress was very pleasant she knows exactly what my fiance wanted to eat. It was a pleasure.
Been in love with place since I was a child going here with my grandma
I can really only speak to their butter cream layer cake. It is freakin amazing! My father started bringing the Melrose butter cream layer cake home every year for my parents wedding anniversary. It was a delicious treat that we, as kids, looked forward to every year. Now as as adults, my sister and I love to get this cake for any special occasions. It is just as delectable today as it was in the past. Best cake ever!!!!!!!!!!p.s. I wanted this cake for my 50th birthday. Sadly the Melrose was closed due to a fire during that time. I literally cried because I couldnt have this cake for my special birthday!
Poor quality food and very poor service
If were being totally honest here, this is a good diner in South Philly. Solid, consistent food options and their menu is HUGE. However, if you go a little bit further south, the Penrose Diner is better. Diners are a dying breed in this city so we have to support them!
