Vegetable plate is great: many delicious vegetables to chose from. Squash casserole fantastic and the cornbread. Had appetizer of Red bean rolls, unfortunately bland and not so good. Good service and prices.
I got here about half hour ahead to get a parking spot on Courthouse Square. So I was one of the first seated and got a window spot. Food was rather disappointing overall. Had chicken and dumplings - good sized pieces of chicken and dumplings, nice gravy-sauce except way too much black pepper and could have used some herbs instead. Macaroni and cheese has an upcharge of 1.00 and despite the other rave reviews it was pretty bad, a D+ or a C- if I wanted to be generous. Way too soupy, no crust for a nice crunch, too soft macaroni, uninspiring cheese - I only ate a third of it. The squash casserole was pretty good and deserved an A. No tea or alcohol to drink. Banana pudding to go was excellent. Total w tip came to around $23, pretty expensive when you can get a similar meal at many grocery store take outs in the south for around ten or eleven dollars with comparable items that tastes way better.
We enjoyed our meals Good service. I got fried ham and beans and peas. All were good. It was served with a delicious roll.
Im not a big fan, but if u like fried southern food this is ur place. Lot of food, old setting.
My husband, mother and sister in law, and I visited Oxford today for the first time and stumbled across this diner quite by accident. The food and service was great and I can see why this gem of a restaurant is so popular! Thank you for a nice lunch and hospitality 🙂.
Good service, good main, good sides. Only quibble is could use a larger piece of catfish or two smaller pieces. Otherwise nearly perfect.
We had this restaurant recommended by a friend who knew we were going to Oxford. There were 4 in our group and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their lunch. Each of us had different sides with our entree and were very impressed. The Meatloaf & Catfish were very good. I would definitely recommend Ajax Diner if you plan on being in Oxford.

Very laid back, quaint diner on The Square! We went at lunchtime on a Friday and there was no wait to sit at the bar. Things seemed to run very efficiently with a professional and friendly staff. The southern cooked veggies/sides were delicious, as were the bbq pork chops! Such a comfortable atmosphere, I would definitely reccomend!
Food was okay. I forgot a box of donuts on the table and returned less than 5 minutes later. They cleaned up the table and said the box was in the back. They got it for me. I left with my box of donuts or so I thought. But turns out someone decided to eat one of my donuts within the 5 minute span of me not being there. What a great surprise.
My mother and I ordered chicken and dumplings. My father had grilled pork chops, between the dishes was so great and felt comfortable as well satisfied. We do not have dinners in Port St Lucie, FL like this. Loved the atmosphere and warmth of the dinner. Thank you.
What a place! We were referred here by several locals after doing a university tour and it did not disappoint. I felt like I was in a scene from a John Grisham book! Everything we order was really good. They did get a couple of the sides wrong but then brought us the correct ones right away. Would definitely go back.

Wow ! First time and the food was excellent! I enjoyed the chicken and dumplings along with the grits. Both were amazing. My husband enjoyed the thin pork chops which were tender and flavorful. The servers were friendly and the service was great. The prices are beyond reasonable. Ajax Diner you impressed us. Keep up the good work. Oh, and the portions are generous.
Great cozy little diner, absolutely killer Southern food. I got the Chicken and Dumplings, it was exactly the unhealthy Southern delicacy I wanted it to be. The server was kind and we got quick service. Art on the walls is fun and funky too.
Cool place! The staff was super friendly and the atmosphere fun. I really liked the TN license plates on the bar.Quick tip: dont order the salad if you arent hungry enough to eat a mountain! LOL
3.5 stars if I could. I feel like Ajax is good, and would be viewed more favorably if it werent SO hyped. Service is quick--food out in under 15 minutes--but not exceptional. Its kind of dark/dirty inside, but some of the decor is cute. Portions are huge, but its quite expensive. Of the chicken and dumplings, country fried steak, and turkey and gravy we tried, the chicken and dumplings were definitely the best. Ive still had better, but they were pretty good. Surprisingly, very much of the food is SPICY. The dressing with the turkey set my mothers mouth on fire, which wasnt desirable. The best side we had was the Mac and cheese; I highly recommend that. Many of the veggies were over salted and slightly over cooked, but not bad.

Everything taste the same !!! It is over seasoned with the same seasoning Terrible. I couldn’t eat any of it The broccoli and rice was a gummy mess with too much of the seasoning you can’t even taste the broccoli 🥦. The meat loaf had more gummy bread than it had actual beef!!! NEVER AGAIN !!!

Eaten here an embarrassing amount of times. Great service great food. Cracker Barrel style menu, soul food, but premium, with premium service included. They definitely earn their tips here, unlike other places in oxford. 10/10 would recommend
Delicious catfish and slaw. We had a group of 10 and everyone was pleased with their meals! Great service. The only reason Im not giving 5 stars is because on their menu it states gratuity added with more than 4 checks per table and we had 3 checks...and we had gratuity added. Sad part is they would have received more if it wasnt added in.
What a great find! Finally had proper southern cooking in Oxford, MS! The chicken and dumplings as well as the pork chops were amazingly flavorful and the ultimate comfort foods! Sides were great, too: butter beans 5*, collards 5* and green beans braised with pork 5*. Wanted to see if their banana pudding was the real deal- my husband was skeptical...one bite and he was sold. THE best real southern banana pudding we ever ate!

Service is great but Im just not head over hills about their food, it doesnt have much seasoning in it at all but their iced tea is good.
Middle of the road. Difficult ordering a healthy vegetarian meal but the staff was super friendly and helped me sample some 5 veggie dishes that were tasty. I hear meat dishes are excellent especially country fried steak.
One of my favorite places as a student at Ole Miss. Fifteen years later and its still everything I love! Catfish and red beans and rice are still my favorites!
We came at a busy time, but we seated ourselves, and it took the waitress (from the bar) about 20 minutes to bring menus. Another waitress should have waited on us before that. However, a table waitress came and took our orders, very patiently. We are enjoying our food. It was fastly delivered, but everything had pepper in it, and mot food had a spice. Even the cornbread had spice....like a hot pepper burn. Others might, but I do not like the food.
Waitress was excellent.I ordered Turkey and they were out and then ordered the chicken and dumplings which tasted good but did not have much chicken at all.
If you want cooking like youre at your grandmas or youre looking to try good ole southern cooking, this is the place. Delicious food, great atmosphere, jazz coming through the speakers, what more could you ask for..... fight the parking, take a Uber, hell, park 6 blocks away and walk. It’s so hard for me to try and branch out from getting the catfish blue plate with sweet potatoe casserole, black eye peas and cornbread. It’s the perfect dish. But for a light lunch, the soup of the day and corn bread always hits the spot.

Ajax is the place you always have to take people from out-of-town to eat! Ajax has got the southern comfort food youve been looking for. Even ran into a few locals having some good dinner. We had a table of 6. Everything on 1 check and house rules are 17% added onto check for tables of 5 or more for gratuity. We all got something different from the next so I can only tell you about my dish. I had the Pot Roast with a heavy starch set of sides. Mac and cheese ($1 extra, I believe) as well as mashed potatoes and brown gravy. Entrees come with a side of sweet jalapeno cornbread to boot. I finished my plate before anyone else if that tells you anything. We have always loved this place and will continue to come here in the future.

Southern, home cooked style meals have never tasted this great! This place exudes a sort of mom-and-pop diner charm that is so accurate that its almost jarring at first. Everything on the menu follows a southern meal style, from gravy on country fried steak to pulled pork sandwiches, and all the way to their amazing cobblers, Ajax provides a complete and filling experience.(No, I was not sponsored by Ajax to post this review, I was just floored by how awesome their food was)

I went to Ajax as part of a conference that I attended with some English faculty from Delta State University. It was divine and very fairly priced. Be prepared to either walk around or take a nap after eating this rich southern food. The atmosphere is very comfortable for all ages. It is not a far walk from Square Books.

The place was cramped up so I was a bit skeptical. The food definitely made up for it. I ordered rice and beans and fries. It was really good. The service was relatively fast and okay. Will definitely go again.
