Im never going back to this store again. No express lanes anymore. Always long checkout lines. Some of the staff are friendly and competent, but most arent. The prices you read on the shelf are often higher than what they charge at the register. Almost every time I go in, I am overcharged, and need to wait in line at customer service to get my 50 cents or whatever refunded. When I got back home yesterday, I looked at my receipt and they charged me more than five bucks more than the shelf price for milk and wine. Im not even going to take my receipt back to argue. Im never going back in that place. There are other grocery stores nearby.
It is there from a long time. Better than Luckys. Cleaner and has better produce. The parking can be an issue as there are lot of small businesses there in the complex. The bank is close by making it quite crowded.
TAKE PICS OF THE PRICES and make sure you get your $5 gift card or free item! I have had a wrong price scan every time I have come here.Stopped coming here a month ago for that reason but my bf wanted the real Pepsi, which is not available at the store I usually go to. When the acting manager, Ed (turns out he was NOT a manager at all but was posing as one, which was confirmed by the GM when she called me back after calling the number about price discrepencies), went to help me, he was very condescending; I had to ask him 3 times to stop doing so. He did not believe the pictures I took, was trying to look through the paper to find the price of the exact item I took a pic of with matching UPC, and then he DID NOT HONOR THE DISCOUNT POLICY (see attached pics 1 and 2).Ed claimed that the $5 gift card only counts if the transaction is complete. It says that nowhere on the sign, and the policy is actually a CA state consumer law that I am aware of from previous retail experience in this very state. Confirmed he was wrong by calling the number on the sign about the policy; he knew the policy but just did not want to honor it for me. Also refused to give me his name when I asked for it, and did not ring up all items in the basket so he accused me of stealing when I put all of the groceries, including the items he neglected to ring up, in the bag. Not my fault he did not want to scroll through the screen to make sure all items were on there and correct, despite asking him to do so.Sure this store does not really care about losing a customer but thought I would make others aware that WHEN the wrong price scans, the policy does NOT wait until after the transaction is complete to get the free item or gift card (depending on price).UPDATE: After the GM, Crystal (sp?), called me back at 6:45am the next day, in response to her DM passing my info after the price discrepency customer service call center confirmed that Ed was wrong, she left a $10 giftcard at the counter. I will be passing it on to my boyfriend instead as I have no desire to deal with anymore of this particular store. It was appreciated receiving a call that clarified that Ed was NOT a manager AND that when I asked to speak to one, as I was baffled by his actions, he said that he was the only manager there and I could speak to someone lower than him. She was not happy to hear of him claiming she was not there when she actually was. The GM said, on her own accord, that she will be sure to train the employees on the price discrepency policy as it is CA state law (has been for decades). Hope it works out for the sake of customers possibly dealing with a power-trippin imposter manager at this Safeway!
I live in Southern California and have not seen a Safeway grocery before. When I went into the store I noticed that it was exactly like Vons groceries in my area. The two stores must have the same parent company bc I was able use my Vons rewards phn number at Safeway to get discounts.
Did not have a few things that I was looking for being from the south. No whole chicken wings, ni fried chicken batter mix, no olive bar either. Deli salads are delicious.
As a disabled person they are helpful and friendly. Had a hemorrhagic stroke, trying to figure out a way forward. Its close. 👍
Pretty good store, however the deli dept needs a lot of help, there is never anyone behind the counter and if there is its only1person always have to wait longer than should and there is a couple of ladies that are just rude and make you feel like you are bothering them.
Great cashiers, just need more help, especially on $5 Friday, and a little more stock on special days. All and all good experience
Safeway in Newark Im sorry to say that its not my favorite store its out of a lot of things lately especially cat food all the animal food cat foods especially dont know whats going on there. They are open till 1:00 a.m. so thats better for me, I find better prices at different stores so not such a good review but thats it
It is a good place to shop. My only concern is they no longer carry some of the items I am looking for. I suppose the items I am looking for may not be their biggest sellers and they need to be profitable, but if I cannot find them there I look elsewhere.
You can get almost anything and everything plus the staff is very friendly. If you have enrolled yourself in their membership program then you can definitely avail their points and discounts.
They have everything you need.. staff is always nice and helpful. Be kind!
Purchase chicken tenders and they were absolutely disgusting overcooked, hard they were definitely not edible. Last time I purchase chicken from Safeway.
Very expensive place to shop. Bought some peaches, apples and a couple other items. Way over priced. Not the Safeway I remember shopping as a kid.
Went to the customer counter at 5:30 pm and told no one would be there for another hour... Classic union labor attitude and customer service ... None.. good luck at this place if you want to do anything other buy a few things
I think Safeway is 👌. They are expensive and the store is old so it doesnt always look clean. They seem to hire a lot of young people and thats great but Id like to see older people too. What bothers me is that its the only big grocery store in Newark . I guess because were a small town we cant support 2 large stores.
Fine selection. Lines are very slow so be prepared to wait unless youre self checking.
Store is huge! Has a lot of the healthier foods that I need (like keto bread). Only issue is the Seafood department and meat department: both had no one assist us despite waiting for quite a while. In the meat department there was a gentleman cleaning some equipment and ignoring us despite our attempts to get his attention. Needless to say we left without our meat and fish we needed for our meals.
Great place, needs to be better with stocking up items
Easy to get in and out. Better to shop earlier if you want to get milk and other high demand staples. App isnt any help with finding which aisle products are located in, which I know is possible since the Kroger app does it. Definitely more expensive than Kroger. If I was home Id go to Kroger, but theres none in this state. This is roughly equivalent to Harris Teeter in terms of products, but its more expensive than even that upscale grocery store.
The lines are way to long. They need more than 2 or 3 checkers especially before a holiday
Cant go wrong with safeway
The Safeway store in Newark is convenient to me because I live near it. I think the Safeway store at Fremont Hub is bigger and might have a better selection if people are interested in going to that one. Shop around though and compare prices because it depends on what youre shopping for. For example, paper products might be cheaper at Walmart. But if youre pressed for time and dont want to drive to Walmart with their larger stores and perhaps a longer checkout line than Safeway might be okay. Update: On October 7, I shopped at the Safeway store. I found the condition of the bathroom to be unacceptable. Granted, the bathrooms get a lot of use, but management needs to stay on top of that so the bathrooms do not look so rundown and dirty (see picture).
There Friendly, and good customer service.
Cashier Kaelie put a smile on my face and made my day! Thanks for being so extra friendly and kind.
They don’t have everything when I did a run for instacart but for myneeds it’s 5 star
Very good organization and very clean store
Always crowded and feels run down. This place has been operating at full capacity for years and it is apparent in the groceries they offer and attitudes of staff. No friendly faces just overworked souls. Parking lot is a disaster and forget about finding anything on the weekend. Luckily sprouts is across the street!
Nice place to hang out for the day.
They have things I cant get at Target like Meat and poultry, water (I love their water). Hams steaks packaged.
Safeways always has good sales, and is the best place to get deals on alcohol!
Its Safeway. However, one of the better self-checkout areas
Very rude and unprofessional customer service at the Safeway pharmacy on El Camino Real in Redwood City
Best time to shop is before 11am to avoid the crowd.
I love this store. The premade foods are super good, and the variety is huge. They have a lot of typical American stuff and a solid selection of all types of food. Club Card deals are so good!!! You can get so many items at a discount if you have a club card.Unfortunately, their selection for other cultures isnt very diverse, but they still have a really solid selection that is good for basic foods. You cant get more specific items here, which is totally expected (a non-issue). For asian items (including central asia) I would go to a store that specializes in these things, like the 99 Ranch (across the street), Lion Market (these two are good for east/southeast asian items), or Herat Market (for middle eastern). Arteagas is good for Mexican and South American groceries. My only issue is that the items here are kinda pricey! If you want toothpaste or stuff BESIDES groceries, you should hit up the CVS across the street. I also cant speak on the quality of the seafood department here, but I do know that the fresh food bar here has pretty solid snacks if youre in a rush. Also, we have an Amazon locker named Neil here.
We went to get some supplies for my sons birthday. I planned to go to Costco afterwards, but I didnt need to because we found everything we wanted there! The customer service was wonderful!
Mostly good experience. Sometimes seems poorly stocked. Mightt be in part Im spoiled.
Thanks to the very sweet employee Shala at deli counter for her patience and delicious sandwich making skills! Very clean and professional!
Good stuff, friendly checker! Not too busy
There was this one very rude staff who accosted me at the door. All I did was attempting to enter without realizing there was a line. I am usually very good at getting in line, social distancing, letting the elders get ahead of me, etc...Most of the time there was no line. Just this one time I was distracted and didn’t see the line. All the staff had to do was to politely remind me there was a line that I needed to go to, and I would be happy to comply. But he rudely confronted me with some very harsh words. This is absolutely uncalled for.
Nice store helpful employees recommend.
Its the BEST Safeway in the area. Always friendly & helpful. Checkout experience is WAY BETTER then the Fremont Stores!
Great beer selection 👌 🍻🍺
The renovation was a great upgrade, much less bread selection now though
If you’re looking for greeting cards, this Safeway has an entire aisle (rather than a small rotating selection like on Telegraph)
I love the value packs they provide for meats!
More cleanliness needed
Beautiful clean store great staff I love going into Safeway I grew up in those stores we dont have them in lower California
The customer service was wonderful!
Great place to shop for produce and have everything you need service is great.
Clean restrooms. Took care of some late night shopping. Im glad Safeway is back to being open 24hrs.Wrong Safeway. The Newark location is open until 1am.
Hungry? They got what you need.
Good shopping
*****My favorite grocery store in town. Their produce top notch and the hot food bar and soups are always super tasty!
Safeway is as good as it could be my heart goes out to them as the commercial for essential worker pertrays a great betrayel to these local grinders right here and everyone else in every other now Albertsons /safeway workplace by making the workers look like they are in whole foods which is hands Down a nurchered placed compared to. The grind and from being I er the hump o. East side of the bay. I got nada thing to say is thank you for grinding continuously from the new guy to the old school thank you...
Looking for sugar free butter pecan ice cream. This place has had it before covid 19. Can we get more? Enjoyed my visit.Plus Cherry Garcia was low.
Pick up order was great! Staff is nice and very helpful.
Loved how they have a different sound and it feels like it’s raining in the vegetable section
One of the better Safeways in the area. Prefer this one over Union City. Living in north Fremont I could go either way.
So today was my first time going to Safeway since the shelter-in-place. Doing my husband duty of surprising my wife with some roses. I always get a nice arrangement or a decorative vase from them. The only complaint is the lack of social distancing markers that should be on the outside of the store. I had the pleasure of a woman, wearing a mask, but only about 2 feet behind me. Her coughing twice didnt help the matter either. For what I went to Safeway for I give them a 5 but having to go home and scrub the yuck off of my neck from her cough because of the lack of social distancing rules, they get a 3.
Great and fast service. Thank you
Best SAFEWAY to shop at
They always have what In need and want and more! Customer service is great!!
This is the only major chain grocery store which serves a city of 50k. Before the pandemic the store was regularly out of items. It is often under staffed but most of the staff are nice. Since the pandemic, they are doing the best they can.
Pretty easy to shop at most people in the store are nice.
They are dying there best thru this Covid mostly friendly
Good place to go for grocery
Its a great clean store with friendly staff.
Today wasnt bad not crowded today sale started & item wasnt available
Always long line in the evening but still love it sine it’s the only open supermarket in late night in the neighborhood
Definitely not as good as it once was. Limited inventory. Some of the staff is not as helpful. Very sad actually!
Too expensive, shelves never stocked, always lines at least 5-6 people deep, checkers are slow. No carts! Everything week I have to go to 2 stores in order to complete my shopping list.
Good Safeway. Best place to get lunch, and grab decent quanity/quality food.I know its the slow season for retail, but they need more people. Lines are ridiculously long, during non-traditional times of day such as 2 p.m. on a weekday.
Decent service. They could run more checkout lanes but they tend to be the worst safeway in the area.
The cashier was very rude and had an attitude. If I absolutely did not need the stuff I got I would have walked out. Never shopping there again
Love the clean and some great cashiers like maria and others who have been around for many years
Very clean organizedAlways less of staff they should hire more staff for the billing counters since I m a regular shopper it always take a lot of time in those long lines . hope the management will see this review and do something about it.
Prices have went up on many items.
My go to store ...Quality items.Never had a complaint.Open till late. So Im one of the last customers. (if my wife remembers to buy something thats needed for early morning ... Ofcourse. I am not fond of going out in the middle of the night unless theres a good reason...)
Everytime I go into this store there is homeless yelling about something
This is a smaller store. I could not find some of the items that I needed and had to make do with what I could find. Also, they should have more cashiers on duty. I had to wait about 15 minutes in the 15 items or less line. The line for the self checkout was halfway down the grocery aisle. There should be more help on a Saturday morning.
Not everything was stocked. The store is clean. Everything is nice
Very clean and well supplied items
I gave place a four star review because I tried to go there to get some talkies chips but they did not have them they only had other chips but otherwise it is great and especially if you are trying to make food just simple
Great mate.
Ive been here many times, & Im still trying to figure out why they refuse to open more lines. Please hire more cashiers to make it a pleasant shopping experience. All the workers are great very helpful... Just not enough of them.
I like Safeways because they have handicap carts for handicapped people because I am handicapped the food is okay prices arent that good for people who are on low income other than that are fruit and vegetable sections good I like theyre $5 Fridays so I get my four if youre handicapped and you have to use a cart they will not let you take him out to the car because they get them stolen and I dont blame them so be aware talk to your Checker and ask them if they can have somebody come out to your car with you and grab the card from you so they can bring it back in the store happy shopping and God bless😇🙏🏼😇
Good Safeway! They are always nicely stocked and the employees are all very friendly. Great produce, bakery and meats.Parking is also good, a lot of available spots at any time of the day. They could improve the number of cashiers opened as usually there is a long line.
Always good fruit friendly Associates yogurt frappe is always fresh and I love it.. I was fine but you need stores very clean Deli makes great sandwiches also
Invariably, when I go to this Safeway the lines are super long and they only have 1 or 2 checkout lanes open. The self-checkout tends to be faster, but its closed at nights. Im not sure what time the self-checkout closes, but it was closed at 8 pm on the weekend when I went there.
A good place to do grocery shopping fresh produce, meat, poultry, fish,
Love how they make you check out your own items. So, not only am i a free employee, but they also make sure they watch you check out your own items. They said this way we make our customers feel like common criminals. Good stuff
Nice place
Pleasant store, and the prices are hard to beat, especially with the app-exclusive coupons.
Good clean store. The self check out is closed early. I was there at 8pm.
Very clean and well organized. It feels very welcoming. There is not as much variety as I would like, and prices are not the best, but it is still a good supermarket nonetheless.
Clean and fairly well stocked, people are friendly staff and customers. Decent / pretty safe neighborhood .
Why did I come here again? At this point I have no one to blame but myself, since Ive had multiple horrible experiences here. Its the nearest supermarket to my office, but next time, Ill drive somewhere else.Today: Wanted to buy a bottle of whiskey for my friends birthday. Cabinet with even low-end liquor is locked. Finally got an employee to open it and take the bottle to customer service - they will not hand it to you. Also bought some sushi (risky) and a stick-on bow for the whiskey gift.Usual 25 minute wait to get out of there, dozens of customers in line, and two checkers.Got back to my office, saw checker smashed the sushi with the whiskey bottle in the bag, making it inedible mush that I just threw away. Idiotic bought at Safeway label stuck on whiskey bottle, which was also partially on the bottle label, ruined said label upon removal, making the bottle no longer suitable as a gift. So spent about $50 and what I got that was usable was a $1.39 stick-on bow. (I can still drink the whiskey myself but now have to buy another gift.) And I now have to go get something else for lunch.Awesome.
A great grocery store close by. The only thing I dont like is how short handed they get. It doesnt seem fair for one employee at the meat department and one employee at the deli department to be doing everything by themselves with no help. I was watching the butcher go back and forth trying to help customers while the employee at the deli was trying his best to help the angry customers in the sandwich bar. They need to hire more people for the night shift and not just let one employee do everything by themselves!
Often come here to get sandwiches when I work in the area.Pretty much all the Safeway staff is nice.Carlo usually gets my sandwiches. He is a good guy.
