Great Japanese grocery store! I have been coming here for years and am a big fan of Sunrise Mart. They have a great selection of Japanese favorites. I really like the Japanese Buckwheat tea they have and they also have a nice selection of prepared foods. If you are into Japanese candy, crackers, or chips – they have a large variety and if you’ve ever been to Japan, it can definitely make you nostalgic! Highly recommend this place! And FYI – you have to take the elevator up as it’s store is on the 2nd floor.
I love to come to this market. We find always great things. I feel like a little kid in a candy store amazed with all the products that we found. Everytime we found something new for us.
This is unfortunately the weakest location of the sunrise mart chain. I’ve gone plenty of times over the past 5 years & it has never failed to be poorly stocked every visit they don’t have items that shouldn’t be missing from any good Japanese grocery store shelves like dried anchovies or Youki Doubanjiang for example. My most recent visit I found out they stock regular orange sweet potatoes but have them mislabeled as Japanese ones which have a completely different texture & color than orange sweet potatoes I Just found this out on 09/27/2021 cause I finally baked it & cut open & what do I see a normal sweet potato I’m pretty annoyed by this cause I have take over an hour and a half by bus & subway then walk just to get to this sunrise mart. It’s not difficult to properly label produce
The staff at check out asked to check my ID when I wanted to purchase an alcohol drink and this is my first time to be asked to check ID since I moved to NYC and I have bought and enjoyed beers and cocktails etc in many different places and been not asked to check ID. Maybe this place is too close to the university so they are taking more strict protocol though which is understandable. They also require $10 minimum for credit card purchases which is insane. Very inconvenient and the shelves and products in general are much more unorganized than another Japanese grocery store close to where I live. Go to H Mart nearby instead where they don’t have the minimum for credit cards.
Always love this place. It has some interesting food. Recommend
Large selection of green tea. Hard to find outside of shops like this.
Love the array of food they have. Food you have never seen and cant find them in any grocery store.
Cute little Japanese store. Its mostly food and then a little stationery as soon as you enter and then some random knick knacks along the same wall as the cashiers. I mostly bought snacks I couldnt find in other stores. They charge for bags and you need a minimum $10 to use a card
Perfect spot to get all of my Japanese foods. Good prices. My dad, a chef for over 60 years, was more than pleased.
They have great snacks! The photo is for my matcha zoom get together (all matcha flavor). The place is small but its a hidden gem, always interesting to try new food/snacks if youre a westerner.
Go to place for Japanese groceries. Nice selection of bowls, etc. Reasonable prices.
I absolutely love this place for all sorts of amazing snacks and cool stuff a must visit if you are in the area
One of my favorite supermarkets, so grateful its staying open during its normal hours during the pandemic.
Sunrise Mart is weird, there is no concern from social distancing, the elevator is ridden as usual without guidelines, etc, etc, you get the picture...its just like back home (🇯🇵) in others words...whatever. Never again going to shop on Saturday late afternoon. Vegetables are a total ripoff, sashimi prices are not too bad...I dont eat meat so I dont know, tofu and other things like ramen noodles are price ok...better than the one on 41 Street. When I come back from Japan it becomes kind of a downer. Takes me a month or more to put up with NY Japanese groceries stores.
Good variety of native foods/snacks.
Nice supermarket with many selection. Authentic items from Japan at reasonable price!
You cant get the hot pot meats like in the bigger HMarts...but they have good assortment of bbq...small packs. Store is clean and well lit.
Amazing and well priced little store! The staff are helpful as well!I go every chance I get
A nice little Japanese grocery located on 2nd floor
Really big selection of Japanese imported snacks, food and drinks. Not bad prices either. Staff is pretty polite and helpful too.
Love this market so much! I always visit when I come here. Such delicious snacks to get and various produce. Two things that are very amazing is that they also have such a cute stationary section that is affordable and something hard to find in terms of quality & good pricing. Second great thing is that the lines are never long when I come here. Staff is so nice as well! Just a great hidden gem!
Local go-to for Japanese groceries
This used to be my favorite place when I live downtown. The price is reasonable, the food is fresh. I moved to upper west side and really missed them.
Love it got some great snacks and food
Love this place! I mean, really, I believe that the people who continued to show up during these (pandemic) times are extremely valued -- valuable -- front-line workers and deserve immense gratitude and respect! Thank you for for helping DownTown NYC get through these rough times!
I love it 😀
Love to shop here. youll find all kinds of Japanese groceries here but also prepared sushi fish and fresh packed snacks. So cool when the elevator is broke and you have to got through the kitchen of the sushi restaurant to get in the shop. staff is very nice and helpful too!
This store is amazing! Felt like I was actually in Japan and they have a variety to choose from. Hard to find on the street, but definitely a gem once found! Cashiers were very nice and insightful on what to get and any questions about products.
Love that staff is so knowledgeable on all thier products. They always have really fresh sushi sashimi choices along with great selection of Japanese staples and teas. Service is friendly and very helpful.
Not as good as other Sunrise locations. Their Midtown location is far superior in selection and pricing. Better to go to H-Mart down the street.
Sunrise has the best fresh carrot ginger salad dressing. Great selection of fresh and packaged food and teas, as well as beauty and household wares. You feel like you have stepped into a store in Japan.
Great selections of Japanese products especially the fresh fish and sushi.
Relatively small, but have a good variety of Japanese food
This small market has all manner of Asian type of food, from uncommon vegetables to specific rice grains to candies you dont usually see elsewhere. Truly a treasure trove for those trying to satisfy their Asian inspired food cravings.
Good selection of asian foods. Some products do not have English descriptions. Also fresh fruit and vegetables. Lots of snacks and ready to eat packages. An elevator takes you upstairs to enter the market.
Nice place
This is a place you will find all the items that are hard to impossible to find elsewhere. Sushi grade fish surimi and fish cake. A whole isle of snacks. This place is amazing and the employees are helpful if you have any questions.
This place is amazing! Great selection and quality groceries.
Ever since kids decided to study Japanese this was our mandatory stop whenever in the neighborhood. original items from food canned coffee toothpaste to mushrooms of varieties i never saw before to greens that are completely unknown without looking up on line to fresh fish, premium cuts of meat to ready to boil hotpots packages... i think if i lived in neighborhood i think we would be regulars... yes prices are New York appropriate
Nice Japanese grocery store, not nearly as cramped as the location up by Grand Central. They have some nifty housewares, including tea wares and some Japanese chefs knives, but are a bit lacking in produce and spice offerings. I could only find whole garlic, but no garlic powder, for example. Then again, garlic isnt really a big thing in Japanese food, so that could be on me. They also have plenty of Japanese specialty foods and candies if thats what youre looking for, and a decent number of Japanese beer varieties beyond the usual Asahi and Sapporo.
SUPER authentic Japanese supermarket. They have so many items packed into a cozy store... from freshly prepared sushi to kettles made in Japan. This place is definitely a hidden gem.
Have quite some choices for everyday living. As a New Yorker who likes Japanese food, Sunrise Mart is my go-to place. The price is acceptable.
My go to Japanese supermarket when Im in Manhattan. Been a frequent customers for over a decade. Has what I need at affordable prices. Friendly staff.
Good quality sushi. It is made at the market, but they sell it at Pan Ya downstairs. I think its the same owner. The market has sushi on the weekends.
They have a nice variety of grocery items but its not a superstore. The prices are very reasonable. I just found it odd that it was one a second floor with 1 smallish elevator. I cant imagine the traffic that would backup from people leaving and coming at its peak hours. I went at an off hour and it was nice to peruse around without any workers stalking.
The service I received here reminded of the time I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria. Sam was simply astonishing. I told him about my fitness goal and he wasted no time calculating my body composition. He followed that with recommending and explaining the route of supplementation that would assist me. I was blown away. I instantly trusted him. You could tell he wasnt trying to sell me on anything I didnt need.
Best Japanese supermarket is NYC. I love their fresh block of sashimi and fresh seafood.
A little Japan in new York, you take an elevator up to the 2nd floor. They have most of the Japanese stable grocery. They have lunch boxes and edible to purchase daily. A microwave for you to heat up food, and they run special on item that are either about to expire or they have too much. Always a surprise.
Somewhat of the trusted fixture at old Japan town at lower East village. Wish it has more variety of fresh foods
Great Japanese grocery store, I wish there more of them in Brooklyn. The staff is very friendly and helpful, dont hesitate to ask for an item, theyll help you find it.
They have almost all Japanese products we need. Great place to shop for ingredients to make Japanese food. The cooking tools are of high quality and have amazing designs. We go there almost every week.
I really like this market. They greet you upon entering and this place has a lot of snacks to choose from. They also have some prepared food options but would need to microwave it, which it conveniently placed by the elevator. The place is pretty small, so you have to walk with caution, so you dont bump into everything, especially if you carry a huge backpack and some of the aisles can get congested. Ultimately, I would visit here to buy some of my favorite snacks cause they have a great selection.
As authentic as it gets. Went to browse for a few ingredients and hardly any of Sunrise’s stock has English labels. You better know what you’re looking for or be ready to ask for help. Really cool spot nonetheless!
If you love Japanese food, this is the perfect place to go! There are many types of candy, drinks, and food to try out. I highly recommend going there if youd like to try out some Japanese snacks
I love this store they have a lot of Japanese grosserry and not too over price. I usually go here to buy Japanese spice, natto, and something that I cannot buy at ordinary store. I also like about that they pack meat for really small so I can easily use one pack of meat for meal when I cook thats really helpful.
Stop by every time when I’m around the area. Like the display so organized, small but selection is enough! Favorite is tofu area and snacks.
Great selection for the size of store. Staff very helpful. Great stuff. Great prices.
Love this spot! Get all my Japanese fixes!
Has a lot of the basic necessities for Japanese foods. But some times the produce is wilted or starting to mold. Make sure you look at the produce before purchasing. The seafood selection and meats are great. You can have your own sushi night right at home by purchasing all of the ingredients here.
My go to for sushi grade fish. Also, the mushroom selection is nice & surprisingly affordable. Pick up some treats too, lots of fun, random items to choose from.
My go to Japanese supermarket back in the city. Right in East village where if you want to explore other Japanese culinary delights, its right around the corner! The staff are polite. The only thing is it does get a little crampy because of the limited space the market has. You will need to take an elevator to the second floor to get to the market . You can check out their website before hand to see if they have the things you need.
Its so different from other Japanese stores. The products are not organized as I expected. Also, the floor is not clean especially near the fridge. Although the staffs are really friendly.
Welcome into lil Japan. Feels like yore transported to a different country. Its a great market for Japanese food goods.I always peak in when Im in the East Village, and get a snack or drink. They have a nice selection of kitchen gadgets, bowls, tea cups, cosmetics, and hygiene things as well. Its a well rounded market. Besides the other Sunrise Mart, theres nothing else like it here in NYC.
One of my favorite shops in NYC. Great selection in such a tiny place.
Oh baby oh baby where shall I start? The rice balls are a good pricing and delicious legit I just love the way the rice is cooked! The staff is polite but dont expect a conversation with them.(not that it matters but some people might cry over this 👀 yes Becky Im looking at you he/she only needs to bag your things so please leave LOL)Im being extra but seriously theyre a lot of things Ive seen around the city over priced and at this store they seem to have it the cheapest. Guess what the wait time is non-existent because they focus on getting you in and out and not having a 10 year conversation or bagging slow! [See its not that bad :-)]Honestly check this place out its not the prettiest of places but definitely a BEAUTIFUL hole in the wall :-) yes I contradicted myself!
Its so much fun shopping at Sunrise Mart. Its a market full of Japanese groceries. Even if you dont need to buy food there are plenty of other things to buy and look at like dishes, beauty aids, and kitchenware. The snacks are awesome and the prices are affordable. Start cooking your favorite Japanese foods at home with the things you find here.
Decent Japanese market with a variety of packaged and frozen foods, prepared dishes and even plates/bowls and videos. Some fresh foods like fish but a limited selection. Its on the second floor so dont miss it.
Love the fresh fruits from this place... I have one serving of my fruits right here whole biting for the week!!! Really fresh, juicy, crunchy, and great variety of fruits.
For a Japanese store, they are not friendly. Typical Japanese small supermarket, very narrow aisles, the selection isnt that good. Not my first choice.
Great place to shop for Japanese food and products. Friendly & helpful staff. Where they can improve on is store size, for its small and gets pretty cramp for shopping during busy times. Nonetheless, highly recommended.
Nice quiet market can find most things needed
Sunrise Mart is great- always a lot of stock in seasonal items and reasonable prices.
Been coming here since I was a kid. Its a great place to get Japanese specialty goods that are hard to find in the states. Also their sushi to-go are VERY cheap and also high quality. SCORE!
Love this place. My partner comes here to shop for Japanese specialty stuff that you can get mostly all in one place instead of having to split up trips. They also have snack fare that reminds me of my childhood, cuttlefish and tiny rice crackers. They have an earthenware, teapots, cups, and small dishes and bowls in the back.
Great prices for fun novelty snacks, inexpensive onigiri and sushi, as well as an assortment of sauces, soup mixes, and fresh ingredients. This grocery has a little bit of everything. Beware if you enter at busy times, do not block the aisles! It is a small space and everyone needs to keep moving. If you want to take your time, go after 7pm or before noon.
Learn shopping! Using your legs, arms, eyes and ears, meld yourself with Japanese culture by purchasing their foods. The trip up the elevator is reverse-kool, the small quarters make it seem a jewel, the foods are well prepared and well worth the cost.
Great selection and prices on unique items you wont find anywhere else.
My go-to place when I want to buy some delicious Japanese treats! Largish 2nd floor space, good prices.
Fantastic selection, helpful staff, and somehow always out of koji every time I go...
Nice lunch spot with all kinds of imported Asian goodies: snacks, candies, teas. Really cheap $1 Japanese beer. I work next door so their seaweed rice wraps are basically a rung on the food pyramid for me.
Good place to get Japanese foods.
I shopped here and they charged me more than actual price. The next day, I brought the receipt and they gave me money for the wrong charge but they didnt see my eyes and didnt apologize for that well.I think theyre used to the mistakes.I highly recommend checking your receipt after shopping.
The food is just delicious I recommend!
A variety of standard packaged Japanese foods as well as some fresh fish and prepared food. Also a fun little ceramic shop in the back for teapots, sake tumblers, and cups.
Friendly and pleasant staff! They have my favourite beer! (Orion from Okinawa!) And a lot of other cool Japanese snacks and foods!!!
Cant read much in Japanese. All good doe 😎
This store has a wide variety of Japanese snacks. I am impressed that theyre able to bring a part of Japanese culture into Manhattan!
This place has a variety of products including a large variety of NATO, they have a nice selection of Japanese tableware. The fish is fresh and the prices a little expensive, yet is okay for being the only Japanese market in the lower Manhattan.
So happy to have found this place after a visit to Tokyo. Has everything that one could need when it comes to Japanese cuisine including a section with ceramics and sweets.
Really cool place. Lots of Japanese foods. Didnt get to buy much goodies because too expensive, but it was worth visiting.
