Cute neighborhood coffee shop that seems popular with the local college students. Friendly service and the food/drinks came out pretty fast. The bagel sandwiches I ordered were just ok. Nothing spectacular that would make me come back for more.

This a great place to grab a coffee and a bite. Coffee is all high qaulity, has a wonderful smell and tastes just right. It feels like a coffee machine is well taken care of and cleaned regulary, so no ash aftertaste. Pastry is fresh, I would even rate local croissants 3.5/5 by an absolute grade and 4.9/5 for US market. Atrisan sandwiches looks good and taste the same. And I especially recommend this place for a rainy day, feels very cost here.Only two negative aspects for me are the size and prohibition against sitting here with a loptop.

Great food, coffee/espresso, and service! There’s almost always a rotation of local artists’ work displayed, cozy seating inside and outside. It’s definitely a local go-to and one of my favorite breakfast spots. They make my favorite fried-egg breakfast sandwiches and I love their lattes!

Denied Pregnant Person Access to Toilet. The coffee shop is cute and the coffee good. The egg & cheese bagel is nothing to write home about - its quite dry, but the veggie breakfast sandwich is good. The food at P&M around the corner is less expensive and much better. What ruined the whole experience for me is that paying customers have no access to a toilet at this establishment. There is also no obvious sign saying that they dont have restrooms available. I am not sure how this is even legal in a dining establishment and have asked my partner, who is an architect, to check up on the regulations about this. Now, this may not be an issue to some but I am 36 weeks pregnant and we opted to dine in. As most can imagine, being this heavily pregnant means frequent and often urgent trips to the toilet. When I asked for the restroom I was told that there was no restroom. Now, I can hardly believe that the workers at this establishment are expected to work a whole shift without access to the toilet so I assume that what they meant was there is no restroom for paying customers. Ill add that I am obviously heavily pregnant and still no accommodation was offered. It astounds me that a dining establishment does not allow access to basic amenities. I am quite certain that pregnant people are not the only customers that such a set up discriminates against. And no, I didnt make it home in time.

Great vibe, also in a good location. I understand they dont want people on their laptops working possibly because the space is so limited. PUT THE SIGN SOMEWHERE THAT IS VISIBLE! I spent $6 on a coffee and the minute I logged in was asked not to use my laptop. The gentlemen was polite but I wanted my money back. The sign is on the front door next to the ground and only visible when EXITING the shop.

My favorite coffee shop in New Haven. They ask fools to take the technology, and as a result folks are connecting, reading the paper or scribbling in the shops drawing book!A little crowded usually, they also have great outdoor seating with shade for the overflow. Sandwiches have reliably been worth the wait.

Coffee is very well done. Tons of options. Food is yummy too.Only down side is the size or the place. Which is hard to deal with. I get it is a small cafe and the feel of that is what makes East Rock Cafe the cafe for East Rock neighborhood. I won’t take away a star for that.Frequent more often in the spring/summer when you can sit outside.Breakfast sandwiches are the bomb!

Coffee and food is great. Atmosphere is warm and inviting. They have a no laptop rule to foster “communication” amongst patrons which is refreshing. Inside the seating is at a premium and people share tables. Different, but I like it. The staff is very professional but also very cool and nice. I don’t live in the area but if I did I’d come here all the time.

Well in my opinion, the best coffee in New Haven with great espresso and pour over beverages on offer. They offer coffee from different local and international roasters and their selection is rotating pretty consistently. Their bagels are to die for as well. Finding seating can be hard at times and some of their non-coffee beverages leave something to be desired.

With the closing of Cafe Romeos I was looking for another coffee place in the East Rock section of New Haven so I tried East Rock coffee. It is a fairly small space, maybe four or five tables close together. I got a decaf Americano, which was excellent. They have a good selection of rolls and pastries, as well as lunch and breakfast items. For me, it is a good place to just stop in and grab a coffee on the go but I dont think that I would meet someone there to have a conversation, because of how close the tables are andthe likelihood that there would not be anything open at a given time. The staff were very friendly and theres a nice atmosphere to it. I would give it five stars if there is a little more room to sit and talk. I do think when the weather is warmer they have chairs and tables outside on the sidewalk so that would be an improvement.

Lost a regular local customer today! Their arrogance is astonishing and everyone who works there has a warped sense a reality. I see them treat other people weird on the reg and I let it go because so far it hasnt affected me personally. Today though, I ask for a breakfast sandwich on a plate with no bread, a very simple request that anyone would accommodate. They REFUSED to make it for me because they dont like the way the presentation looks without bread. One girl even said we just dont do that here, thats not what were about. Seriously, laughable at best.Chris Monks

What a crushing disappointment. What I thought would be my go-to coffee shop turned out to be the worst cafe I’ve ever been been to. Why, you ask? Because of their “no laptops or tablets policy” and the harassment I experienced from the manager.I was told to stop reading the news on my iPad, to which I asked if there were any health or safety concerns that necessitated I cease using my device. The manager said it was about getting people to connect and talk with each other. Naturally, I inquired as to how reading news on a tablet was any different from the other patrons reading news on print newspapers. He had no reply. I further questioned why other patrons were allowed to use cell phones, but my use of a tablet was banned. Again, he had no answer except to say “it’s our policy”.After we debated for a while, he finally asked me to leave. I told him that if he thought such a ridiculous policy was legal and enforceable, then he could call someone to come and try and enforce it (i.e. police). He didn’t seem happy with this suggestion and angrily stormed away.It is worth noting that during this entire interaction I was in the middle of eating my breakfast and drinking my cappuccino, belaying any concerns about me taking up space long after I finished eating (as some patrons do even without laptops or tablets). While I have nothing against suggesting that patrons interact more with each other, forcing this on customers is ridiculous. Perhaps even more ridiculous is the inconsistency with which it is enforced. At the table next to me two people sat reading newspapers and one person was on their phone. Why were they not reprimanded for not interacting with each other. Why was I singled out? The manager is clearly inept and unable to understand the meaning of his own misguided policy. Either ban all forms of “isolating” media, or stop trying to enforce such a terrible policy. The way the manager tried to enforce his policy deserves special attention. After harassing me multiple times, by calling me names and refusing to leave my table until I finished eating, he began asking for personal information. I’ve never been harassed so much at a cafe in my life. The manager revealed his true character when he resorted to uncivil name calling, by calling me “childish” for not abiding by his policy. I’m sorry, but I’m not the one creating and enforcing childish policies. I simply wanted to enjoy my breakfast and coffee while reading the days’ news—something I will no longer go to East Rock Coffee to do.

Coffee is okay and their no electronic device policy feels like a joke, they tell you the policy as they process your transaction on an iPad, but its real folks. Apparently relaxing in a coffee shop with an ebook or enewspaper on your tablet, is a problem this coffee shop has decided to take on. Considering that Yale is nearby, this feel less like a social movement and more like a sales technique. Taking away your right to use an electronic device seems like a great way to encourage you to grab your drink and be on your way. Bottom line, if you go to coffee shops to relax, want good coffee and dont want to be told to put that ebook down, skip this place and go to the other awesome nearby coffee shops like the Coffee Pedaler.
