Every time I visit Missoula, I head to The Trail Head! Whoever the buyer is does an amazing job of picking out just right clothes for my taste! And there’s a huge selection of my favorite brands, plus some smaller, unique ones. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and their efforts make for an enjoyable shopping experience. They’ve taken care of some special orders for equipment for us as well. The Trail Head is my favorite outdoor store (and I’ve been to A LOT of outdoor stores!). I can’t wait to check out their new Gear Exchange in the basement.
The Trail Head has been our go-to gear store for years. Bought lots of river gear here and more recently at their new sister store, River Sports. Staff are super helpful, always happy to answer questions about gear and local conditions. Rental options are also great. We love these shops!
I love working with this local company! They hire knowledgeable people, sell quality products, sponsor a used gear sale.
So impressed by the friendly and helpful service!
This has been our go to store for all our camping and hiking needs. Real personable and knowledgeable staff. They will even price match certain items with other stores. Buying local is one thing but buying from a store/staff that goes above and beyond is why I will always go with the Trail Head first.
Great in-town shop. They carry quality products and have things on sale at good intervals. Also added a used gear/clothing section recently. Been a REI member for 40 years, but still try and get to TH - they have a customer program as well.
A policy of zero returns or exchanges seems extreme to me. I’d say we’ve all had times when a product didn’t meet our expectations, which was the case with me. Not knowing the policy (my own fault), I went by the store to see if I could exchange an item. When I walked up to the counter I saw the sign just as the sales person asked if I needed help. I said I guess not, I was hoping to return these snowshoes, but I now see the sign. He didn’t even look up or say anything, which I felt was pretty rude. It would have been nice to feel like maybe I was a valuable customer who deserves a “sorry” or maybe an explanation since I’ve spent hundreds of dollars in the store. After about a minute I just left. Customer service matters. Sadly, I will never shop at Trailhead again.
Great local gear store with a nice selection and price range in a super convenient location. The ski rentals are great too!
Great selection! Perfect store to get outfitted for hiking, backpacking, fishing and a great apparel selection! The employees were friendly and helped me find what I was looking for. Sad that my favorite employee moved to the Boat Store, guess Ill have to shop there more often!!
Only ski shop in town who offered to help repair a skin vs making me buy a new one
Great staff. Great gear selection. Locally owned!
Great outdoor shop with an awesome used/consignment section of gear.
They had everything I needed.
Steep prices and the customer service is a bit underwhelming, they tried but seem a little less knowledgeable than you might hope. Either way they had what I needed and its a nice store if youre in the market for high end outdoor gear.
Ive been in line 40 minutes to rent a pair of cross country ski boots. I should have gone to Open Road.
Great knowledgeable staff and friendly! My first choice in outdoor gear shopping.
Shopped for three mins. Had mask on. Staff said it did not cover my nose well enough. So I left. Prices were high, even on sale. Minimal B&T selection.
River fishing water location is not in the same place.
This is the spot for fresh gear in zoo town. Great knowledgeable staff, decent selection and best of all tons of rental gear!
Great service, beautiful selection. Lots of help with flies for the area. Thanks!!
Patagonia everything!! Good, reliable, dependable outdoor gear. Makes me wish I was pure mountain man
Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. Support local!! Thanks Trail Head!!
We love coming here every time we are in town from Boise. This store has this location and one in the mall. Think REI but with even better brands! Not even going to lie, their prices aren’t the cheapest but you will be hard pressed to find better service and selection - especially on clothing brands including: Howler Bros, Patagonia, Prana and other regional brands that I had not seen before. Highly recommend!
They carry brands you wont see at other outdoor stores. I got a pair of boots from a brand Id never heard of and they are super nice! Also have great rental options I rented xc skins this winter and was a good price.
The staff here is always knowledgeable, experienced and willing to share ideas and reviews of products. Products are usually good quality and therefore not cheap ... in manufacturing or in price. Ive rented gear from these people multiple times. Once again you could find cheaper rental gear other places but the gear will not be as nice as from the trailhead. Stop by the dram shop grab a beer and go shopping.
Thank you, Ben! You are a fantastic boot fitter. Knowledgeable, thorough, professional and friendly customer service.
The best locally owned outdoor gear company in Missoula.
Had a worker literally following me around the store watching my every move. Every time I looked up she was just standing there staring at me or *folding clothes* while watching me. Felt super uncomfortable and will not be going back. Ive had several friends that have worked here as well and have quit because of poor management. Shop somewhere else folks.
Great gear shop. They literally have everything you need for a back country trip. Climbing gear, kayaking stuff, fly fishing equipment and a good selection of footwear.
Don’t go into this store unless you are dressed like you are rich. Made the mistake of putting on my carhartt jacket instead of my Patagonia one... Went in today, with money to spend, and multiple store associates walked past me and my boyfriend MANY times without once asking if we needed help or how we were doing. HORRIBLE customer service!! Left without buying what I needed. I’ll spend my money at the non-judgemental stores instead.
Always great service, but today Alejandro really went above and beyond. Knowledgeable, prompt, and a great sense of humor. Buying local is always better!
Good sales, great gear, and helpful and enthusiastic staff. We regularly rent snowshoes and skis for visiting friends and family here. Easy process and reasonable prices.
Excellent service and knowledgeable staff. Great selection of gear and clothing for adventure in Montana... Good fly stop too...
I have been shopping at the Trail Head for as long as I can remember; it is my go-to for gifts and for clothing, rentals, or gear for myself. They only sell quality items that last forever, so if you want cheap throw-aways then the Trail Head is not for you (although you can score great buys on the sale rack.) The staff is always patient, helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly- it is clear that customer service is a priority. They have a large selection of options and sizes, and I greatly appreciate the location and layout of the store- it’s convenient, well organized, and easy to find to what you need. Shopping local keeps our money in Missoula instead of lining the pockets of another billionaire in different state (like Amazon!) and the Trail Head is locally owned and staffed by the same great folks you will see on the trail, river, or ski hill. It’s always been a positive experience for my family to shop at both locations.
Called them to order a sleeping bag that the manufacture has as a dealer on there site. 1st time they took my order they said they would call me back as soon as they finished the order. 45min later I called them back and they don’t have the order complete or even the right item. Told me they would call me right back after they fix it...never got a call back. I guess they sell a lot of $700 sleeping bags and my order isn’t really worth there time. Well that’s ok, because another dealer had time for me and my money
Todd not only runs a great store with outstanding selection and service, he and The Trailhead are involved in the community. He cares and it shows in how the business operates. Could you save a few bucks heading to a box store or buying online...maybe, but the personal touch and knowing you are dealing with an organization that believes in giving back to the community is well worth the money spent.
After working diligently at the trailhead for 4+ Months, I was wrongly accused of stealing (which I would never do) by the owner, Todd Frank. I was given no chance to defend. Please don’t support a business that unjustly tarnishes the reputations of hardworking, honest employees.I would never steal, and anyone who knows me would agree.
Trail Head is amazing! Some of my favorite long lasting articles of clothing can only be found at The Trail Head!
A wonderful outdoor retail shop with lots of products and equipment.
Competitive prices for high quality outdoor gear, new gear here, little used stuff.
Good stuff. Decent pricing for a local store.
Now this is the wrong place to go if you are not up for spending. If I were an employee there, I would simply be broke every month after spending all my salary on gear!
The trailhead is my go to store for cute everyday clothes. The prices are on point with the brands and the service is incredible. This is a Missoula staple for a reason.
Great deals on socks!
Purchased my first yoga mat here. It still is used to this day (hello 4 years ago). The store has tons of outdoor gear for your many needs. Worth a visit!
Delicious food, really good drinks and very friendly service.
Great outdoor store with helpful staff
A great selection and a very knowledgeable staff
Great selection of gear and amazing staff! The Trail Head is the only stop in Missoula for anything outdoor related!!
Was disappointed that there wasnt more gear for fall. Store was full of summer clearance. I was there a few years ago and there was a great selection. Disappointed this time.
Knowledgeable and friendly staff, great selection, and nice shopping atmosphere. A cornerstone of the Missoula outdoor community.
Just bought a fuel canister - looks like a nice store
I got my patagonia backpack there and always get complements on it.
Customer service is exceptional as are the products they carry for enjoying the outdoors
Really like this store. Last visit, not a single staff member came to check on us and I went to a different place for my items.
Sale right now. Easy to navigate and helpful staff
Great store with good stuff inside
Great variety of outdoor products and fantastic customer service!
My go to for renting outdoor sports equipment (i.e., snow shoes). Awesome staff and great selection of outdoor merchandise.
Crazy knowledgeable and friendly staff make this the first stop you should make when looking for gear. Not the best prices, but love supporting locals.
Buy local! Great shop
I got here a half hour early to return rental skis, thinking they opened at nine on weekdays. They open at 9am on weekends, but on weekdays its 9:30. When I saw an employee through the door and held up the skis, he shrugged, like what could he possibly do? I waited a half hour, plus however long it took for him to look for the original rental form behind the counter. Eventually he gave up and accepted the skis.
Great store and great staff!
Great place to buy and rent outdoor gear!
Highly recommended for outdoor gear, especially ski gear, backcountry gear, and rafting gear in Missoula.
Great outdoor store. Most of the stuff sold here is expensive though.
Great hike
Good, quality outdoor equipment store.
Good place to rent a raft
Stop in for an outdoor gear treat whenever in Missoula
Best place to rent gear
Everything from fishing tackle to clothes.
This place is it for mountain gear!
Nice stuff
Nice stuff
Overpriced.
