I setup an appointment to alter some work pants and a pair of faux leather leggings that were too long. Marilyn’s expertise, style, and professionalism was really helpful in deciding what alterations to do. Alterations were done in a timely manner and I am so happy how they turned out. I highly recommend.
We hired Marilyn and her team to make a custom Santa Claus suit. Our biggest concerns were durability and timing on completion of the suit. We started this project a little late in the season. We met with Marilyn and her team, they gave us a quote, and we agreed on the price, process and completion date. The only thing I can say is the everything is perfect!Marilyn and her team completed the project on time and in budget. I would recommend Marilyn Johnson to anyone who wants a quality garment.Thank you Marilyn... you’re now on Santa’s Nice List.
I sent my mom here for alterations...and they were outrageously expensive. As if that wasnt enough she kept creasing the price. She also wasnt to press her dress...and marilyn did not have the dress ready on the agreed time.
This place was recommended by my bridal studio as they did not provide on-site alterations. I scheduled an appointment before everything shut down which unfortunately was cancelled and was told they would call me to reschedule. When everything started reopening I had to call as I never heard from them. I was told they weren’t taking appointments yet and would hear back in a week. I never heard anything so called again and finally got an appointment scheduled. At that time, I confirmed that I would be able to bring my mom to the appointment with me and was told that would be fine but no one else could come. My mom lives in NJ and drove all the way down just for the appointment - when we got there, she was only allowed in the vestibule (despite wearing her mask and following all of the other protocols required by Marilyn personally - sanitize, wear gloves upon arriving, and signing a health certification waiver). Now I’m sure I know what you’re thinking, at this point, I should have known this wasn’t the right place for me and turned away right at that moment. But due to being postponed so many times, I only had 8 weeks to get my dress altered and felt pressure. I went through everything with Marilyn (my dress needed pretty extensive alterations due to losing a lot of weight after ordering) and after each item I had to walk outside in my dress, repeat everything to my Mom, and then come back inside. We had a slight disagreement about whether the dress needed to be hemmed and decided that would be determined at a later appointment. She provided an estimate of almost $500, without the hem, and we left leaving the dress and a $200 deposit scheduling an appointment for 2 weeks later. In 2 weeks, my mom drove back down to MD and we went to the appointment. Marilyn totally lost her cool and refused to let my mother in claiming that she told us last time that wouldnt be allowed again (which she definitely didn’t). I immediately broke down and started crying because doesn’t every bride deserve to have her mother there every step of the way when getting married? Marilyn was so insensitive and was questioning why I felt so strongly I needed my mother and didn’t I think she would do a good enough job.. I said it was not negotiable for me and that it would probably be best if I took my dress and left - she agreed. Luckily, I had the forethought to try on the dress before I left. I put it on and the dress was still too big on me, she proceeded to argue with me that it wasn’t (I’m sorry but wouldn’t the person wearing the dress know how it fits best?). I packaged up the dress and when trying to leave she claimed that we owed an additional $150 on top of the deposit based on the work she had finished. The dress was still too big on me and she hadn’t even gotten to the rest of the items we discussed!! We argued and ultimately left the shop without paying the additional money. I am so thankful we didnt because upon going to my next appointment, we found that she had put the zipper back on crooked among other things - my new seamstress had to completely undo what had been done and fix it. During these difficult and uncertain times that are already SO stressful for brides, I would never want someone else to have this experience.
Went here for my wedding dress alterations and had a great experience! I was referred here by my makeup artist and wedding dress shop in Savage Mill, who have had plenty of clients use Marilyn Johnson’s services in the past. The staff members were all polite and responsive, and alterations were done quickly (and beautifully) at a reasonable price. There are COVID procedures in place to keep clients and staff safe. Highly recommend!
My husband and I went to Marilyn for tailoring for our wedding (both my dress and his tux). Marilyn was helpful in fully explaining what work would be done, the cost and even potential cheaper solutions. She was also full wedding day tips- particularly with managing simple tasks in your wedding dress! I admit I didnt shop around for pricing but the quality of work was well worth the cost. Both my husband and I looked great on our wedding day, and well be visiting Marilyn again for future tailoring needs!
Marilyn is fantastic! She is creative, instructional, and provides great customer service. I recommend providing her with enough time for your alteration to allow her to be her most creative self - great work takes time! Highly recommend.
This studio saved the day by sewing the patches on a military dress uniform the night before it was needed! Beyond being kind and helpful, she was thorough at consulting with us on each detail of the placement and pressing to align with uniform codes. Cant thank her enough for her speedy and diligent completion of a task that, by the the look of the gorgeous costumes and dresses in the shop, was way below her level of skill. I will definitely be coming her again for alterations and maybe a sewing class!
I was surprised to find a place of such great quality so locally! Marylin does her very best to make sure youre happy with the end result. She altered my wedding dress, which every bride knows can be a stressful time! But she made me feel beautiful by the end. Id recommend her to anyone!
This is the most unprofessional, negative attitude, impersonal tailor/seamstress that I have ever worked with. The owner, Marilyn Johnson has very poor communication skills and is not responsive to emails in a timely manner to the point that I had to cancel my custom engagement project at the very last minute. This woman initially gave me her word and the perception that she was capable of completing a design by my deadline which turned out to be completely false and as a result, she wasted MY TIME that could have been better appropriated elsewhere. This woman is obviously overwhelmed and/or does not know how to prioritize her time effectively with a potential paying client. If i could rate this company ZERO stars I would. Save yourself the headache and go elsewhere.
I am getting my wedding dress altered here. I have not been for my final fitting, but so far, I am incredibly impressed. I have only ever had one other formal dress altered by someone else, who did an ok job, but I wasnt impressed with that persons personality, and like I said, the alterations were just OK, so I searched for seamstresses in the area, and I am SO happy I found this place! My first consultation went amazing, Marilyn made suggestions and really seems to know what she is doing. She also gave me an approximate pricing, which was very helpful. I have been to my second fitting so far (with one or two left to go, I believe), and my dress is looking amazing. Marilyn has been so helpful, and Imani is so kind and quick to reply to me. I am so excited to get my dress back, and will post photos and a final review after our big day!!!
Wedding alterations with Marilyn were a breeze! She was able to raise the hem, take off the train, and have an easy to maneuver dress that was perfect for a small outdoor wedding with no wedding party. Plus she has military discounts.
The experience over all was pleasant, however there were a couple of issues i had that prompted me to give the business 3 stars instead of 5. The location is not ideal, but once I found it I felt that the service was very thorough and despite that I felt that the price for a hem was quite steep I was willing to pay because I had been referred. The gown seemed ok when I tried it on but the night of I was tripping over it constantly. For the amount that I paid for a hem I was not happy to be tripping over it the entire evening. Not a bad experience over all but I would not go back.
Marilyn and her team provide superb service for alterations, costuming, original fashions, and refurbishing classic or heirloom garments. Their extraordinary capacities to work with fabrics of all eras and help people with all garments in many different conditions is unparalleled in the area. Highly recommended!
Very thorough! I cannot wait to pick up my dresses. She is honest and fair priced.
Marilyn is very knowledgeable and does a fantastic job. She always goes above and beyond!
I went there and needed a rush job on something and I couldnt have been more happy with the results.
Great
