This store is an amazing store to visit. They have a vast selection of used books and a decent selection it new books. It has a very old school feel to it, and a great atmosphere. The sections are clearly marked and books are easy to find but you will find yourself lost in here anyways because you wont want to leave.

Super. 1st time and is a book lovers dream. I could easily see myself spending 30 days there as they have so much to see!!!.Didnt get to look at much as we only had 1 hour to look as my friend had an appointment and we had to leave.Did score though. Book I had looked at from another place was $50.00 and I got mine for $10.00. What a deal for me.I maybe saw not even a tenth of the place. Cant wait to go back and spend more time.Well worth the trip and time.

I want to love Smith Family, but just can’t anymore. How can a local, small business staff afford to be so unwelcoming/hostile towardstheir customers?! It’s been this way for YEARS!I go back every few months, hoping they’ve hired someone with just a tiny bit of joy in their heart or at the very least can give eye contact and a pleasant smile while taking your money, but sadly no. It must be a horrible place to work if the only emotion the entire staff can show is contempt.

We went to the Smith family bookstore next to the University of Oregon campus for years, and though we are sad that the campus location is gone, so grateful that the main location is still open. We love their huge children’s book section, along with their uncanny ability to have good books at reasonable prices. My only complaint is the isles are usually so packed as to make it hard for wheelchairs to get around some areas.

Two stories. Well, theres more books than just that. You know what I mean; the building. I love how many aged books I found. The lady gave me a cardboard box to carry all my books out. I didnt plan on buying so many but I found treasure and then some at this shop. Reminded me of Powells.

They wrapped it neatly and packaged it carefully. I have never reviewed anywhere before, but felt I had to because of how happy I am with their business. Would happily order from them again.

Some of the staff was somewhat helpful, but some of the staff was very vague in giving me assistance when I asked where I could find certain books. I got lost and ended up having to ask again. The staff seemed very irritated that I was asking again. But im a disabled veteran. Minimizing the amount of wandering around aimlessly definitely has a marked effect of my quality of life. I was determined to find the books I was after because they were important gifts I was buying. So I asked another staff person upstairs for help. He seemed irritated with me, but he did help me much more than the guy downstairs. I ended up spending almost $150 on books that day. Honestly, I dont think I would buy anything from them again. The store and prices are pretty good. But there is a very pervasive condescending attitude from the staff. I only interacted with 2 male staff. But it was pretty clear that they arent friendly to say the least. I will go where the staff is kind, knowledgeable, and willing to answer questions, and help customers without making them feel like they are sooo put out by doing anything for them

I havent been since the integration of both stores, and Im hoping everything is a little more fully set up when I return. I write that knowing that since its a perfect example of my favorite kind of book store. Other examples include Dickson Street Bookshop in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the flagship location for Half-Price Books in Dallas, and another Eugene location -- the sadly now closed Blue Moon Books, a space and an owner I was so excited to find only to discover they were in their final days. Theres a certain smell and feel to stores like these. Its as if youre walking into some special spot that only certain cool people are aware of, where you might be transported to any other time and place in the history of anything -- apologies for the cliches, but there really is something magical about Smith Family Bookstore. And as much as I love my fiction, the organization and selection on the second floor is incredible. Staff is great, too. And they love to read, so they can talk to anyone about anything. All the best people are readers, and this is one of the only places where Ive only bumped into cool folks.

Most of my life I have been coming to Smith Family Books. Im forever amazed at the quantity, the organization, the knowledge of the staff. Currently, they are under construction downtown, so there are beautiful towers of books looming about the place. Whats in there? Treasures. I love finding brand new books alongside antique volumes. Selling books (Monday, Wednesday, Friday until 5 pm) was an easy process, and I only had to wait 10 minutes or so while the gal before me had her old milk crates of mixed books expertly shuffled through for an end result of some solid cash for the chosen ones. We sold kids books. It went very well for us! Now we can buy more. I was eyeing the display of northwest, outdoors and history themed books by the stairs. Ill be back after my birthday for my picks. Check it out, its 100% local!

Absolutely a fantastic place to take a date who is as fascinated with the world as you are if youre the curious wordy type who loves to read and share knowledge. The staff are helpful and friendly and knowledgeable about where to send you if you know what youre specifically looking for. They feel like an old timey bookstore and have tall beautiful wooden shelves just brimming with books. I managed to get a massive haul of encyclopedic books about mythology and supernatural things for just 56 dollars. Thats what one of them had as manufacturers suggested selling price, to put this in perspective. Truly a delight to go here and I plan to come again.

This is a great used bookstore. One of the best I’ve ever shopped. However, they have entire sections that are loaded with books that they say are “closed off.” I tried to access the books but was told I could not go back behind all the stacked boxes or I would be kicked out of the store!!! Why stock book shelves and then block them off?? If they would empty the shelves or put up a sign....If they had been more courteous I would have given them a five......sorry!

Maybe I was in when they were in the middle of inventory, but overall I was disappointed by the stacks of not for sale books that greeted me when I walked in, the boxes of books yet to be added to the shelves just sitting at the end of the sci fi & fantasy section, and the lackadaisical approach both to alphabetizing the shelves and to double stacking the paperbacks. I did buy my first completely unheard-of book based off my browsing in several years, which was great. Could have been better if the rest of the books on the shelves were visible.

While I love supporting local book stores I have a difficult time with supporting Smiths. The selection of books is outstanding and the pricing is reasonable. Where they fail is customer service. I went to the location on Willamette yesterday to get one of William Sullivans books on hiking. I had hoped to get it used but, knew that if not used I would get 10% off the new price. I got the book and approached the cashier to purchase it. He was talking with another employee about which location they would be working at the following day. I stood quietly for a moment and then made eye contact with them both and said that I would like to pay. He rang me up, continuing to talk with the other employee the ENTIRE time. Neither one smiled or talked to me. The next book I purchase will be through Amazon.

Review №85

There are a lot of books here, its two stories, and they do have quite the variety. However, some of the books seemed pricier than I was expecting, rather than finding them in the $5-10 range, the majority of the ones I was looking at were $10-15. And some of their books are new, so theyre only 10-20% off the regular publisher price...which is better than nothing, but disappointing when you see a book on the shelf, thinking its used and potentially a good buy, only to find its practically full price. Also, as a side note, you have to pay for parking here, not surprising since its downtown, but worth noting for those who might be first time visitors.
