Amazing! We went for Sunday brunch and had the poutine, biscuits and gravy, grits and a ham, bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. All were were better than my highest expectations! Could tell the ingredients were all high quality, but the execution of the dishes was superb. I havent had grits this good since living on the coast, and I had all but forgotten that home fries could be crispy. We sat on the patio, and was really happy to see that the tables were nicely distanced, the servers all had proper COVID PPE, and they went the extra step of having hand sanitizer on the table. Despite this the atmosphere was really nice, and our server Mckenzie was fantastic.Absolutely on the very top of our list. Thanks to the owners and staff for making our day!Edit: Made it for dinner, and it was even more amazing than brunch. This place is so good!

I eat at Barred Owl every time I am in Columbia. I’ve had lamb chops, steak, shrimp and grits, sweet potato humus, deviled eggs, Reuben sandwich, beet salad and more. I love trying something different each time I am there. Everything I have ever eaten at Barred Owl has been a culinary delight. Service has always been outstanding. Columbia is so fortunate to have this caliber of farm to table dining. I just spent a week in New York City where I sought out top rated restaurants. The food at Barred Owl fares well in comparison and is so much more reasonably priced. I’m looking forward to my next trip to Columbia.

I ordered from the barred owl for pick up and got their Waygu steak asked for medium and it was definitely rare! I also ordered their rabbit risotto, their beer breed, and biscuit sliders! I don’t know if the food was not up to standard because it was ordered for pick up but I have to say for the price of the food what I ate was pretty average! I definitely could have cooked a better steak at home! I honestly feel like I could have done a better risotto and I have never made one before. I don’t like making poor reviews and I realize this place has great reviews so my meal must have been an outlier but I expect great food when I spend over 100 dollars without tipping (no tip because it was pick up)

We had a group of six people and everyone loved our meals. We were told that the menu changes every day. We started with a cheese board and the sourdough bread & jam appetizers. I absolutely loved my wagu smashburger with pimiento cheese spread and french fries. It was so delicious! Several of us enjoyed the Mixed Grill which included a pork chop, bratwurst, and sausage. The only complaint was that the person who ate a cobb salad was not impressed with the salad dressing. We enjoyed a piece of bread pudding and it was okay (I wish I had ordered the flourless chocolate cake instead). The atmosphere was nice and the restaurant was very social distanced and clean. We recommend The Barred Owl!

Rustic, vogue and eclectic all in one. The Barred Owl has an impressive menu of items that you won’t find anywhere else in town. You won’t find your Applebee-esque standard fare at any part of of the menu. Unique items will be discovered in their dessert, appetizers, salads and main fare selections. The service was fantastic and the energy high. I would recommend going once before you use this place to impress an out of business client just so you can know the pallet and use it to impress.

Easily at the top of my list of favorite places in Columbia. The restaurant and bar are phenomenal. You can expect some regular staples as well as a rotating menu depending on whats locally available. While they do pride themselves on using the whole animal (do yourself a favor and try something that you normally wouldnt, like head cheese) they also have vegetarian options. They have some serious talent behind the bar who not only nail the classics, but come up with their own hits. Weve simply ordered a drink and let the waiter/waitress take it from there. Havent been disappointed yet.The butcher shop is in its own realm. House-made sausages, cured, fresh, and aged meat from locally sourced animals, breads, locally sourced cheeses, eggs, tarrow, and other goodies. Its a great place to grab something special for an event or gathering. The folks behind the counter will help you with anything you have questions about and provide recommendations.Give yourself the opportunity to try new spins on classics or something new altogether. You wont leave disappointed. And remember to tip well.

The soup was too salt, fish bland, and something in the salad tasted less than fresh. It may have just been an overpowering cheese. Between the two of us, neither was impressed with our meal. It was a a perfectly acceptable $30 meal but not a $70 meal. There are better flavors in town for less. The table next to us and ambient noise was so loud we had to shout to carry on a conversation. Not the ideal date night.Well give them a second chance in the future and Ill update this review accordingly. One upside is the waitress was friendly as well as helpful. Their food at the farmer market has been excellent.

One of the best spots in Columbia! We love the always changing menu. This isnt really the place to go if you get in a rut and order the same thing each time, but if you want to experience something fantastic and creative this is the perfect fit. Where to start with this??? The drink menu... Im a big fan of Manhattans, so the Manhattan Fashion was fantastic. The flavors meshed so well I could have had five! The starters .. a sweet potato hummus with fried black eyed peas was beyond delicious. The pitta was perfectly grilled and it was an incredible way to start the meal. The entree I had was the mixed grill and my friend had the muscles. We could not decide which was better. The mixed grill was amazing and the mustard served with it was fantastic. The slaw was flavorful yet cleansed the pallet between bites rather well. The muscles were incredible and the only thing I think could have made them better was more of the juice in the noodles and a baguette to enjoy it with. The desert was the flourless chocolate cake. The crunch of the cookie, the richness of the cake and the sweet of the cream made this a complex get simple dish that I would love to experience again.I enjoy the Barred Owl and cannot wait for my next visit.

This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Columbia. They always have the freshest ingredients. I love that that cut their own meat. The aesthetic inside is great. Good mix of cheeses. They have a wide variety of alcohol here thats on showcase behind the bar.

This was our first time to eat at The Barred Owl. We started with Quark, which was, frankly, the best part of the meal. Creamy, cheesy, savory goodness. We ordered clams, grass finished steak, and street tacos. The steak and its accompanying potatoes were cooked to perfection and very good. The clams were perhaps a little overcooked (a bit chewy) but the white wine sauce was nice. The street tacos were good - but nothing extraordinary. The ambience was pleasant, upbeat and young. The only real negative was very slow service. We waited nearly an hour for our meal. As this was a first visit, I dont know if that is typical or not. The waitress did apologize more than once so perhaps there were unusual circumstances.

This spot is an absolute must go! I went in for Friday night dinner. The place was busy but not full (no place in Columbia really is...). We were able to sit at the bar and have a wonderful cocktail and food pairing for the night.I would skip out on the pork tenderloin next time though. It wasnt what it was hyped to be. But the lamb was absolutely amazing. You can taste that it was local and fresh. The dessert was a chocolate cheesecake and that was absolutely delicious I think they might have put crack in it cuz it was so addicting! My only other regret was not being able to go there a second time (their closed on Sundays and Mondays). Til next time!

The egg nog cocktail is like Christmas in your mouth all year long! And the Yasss Peche cocktail is so fresh and refreshing. Oh the food? To die for! So delicious, the meats are the star here.Update Aug 6 2021 5:45pmJacob was our waiter. He was marvelous. Charming, funny, knowledgeable. He gave us terrific information about the products, made excellent suggestions, and responded with care to an issue we had. (See below)My friend and I decided to do a meat sampling meal since it is a butcher shop. She has eaten here about a dozen times and always raves about every item. I have been here once before (see earlier review) Our order:Pork Rillette Hand pie $8Albondigas $12Mixed Grill $32205day dry aged 10 oz Wagyu ribeye $67Hand Pie- hands down the Star today. We discussed buying them in bulk and freezing them. Jacob says they aren’t always on the menu, FYI. Beautifully baked crust. Flaky, buttery & tender pie crust felt like a croissant in my mouth. Great ratio of crust to filling. Filling was generous, not soggy but moist. It held together well and was the perfect vehicle for the pepper jelly, which is delightful and just the faintest hint of spicy. Overall it was so flavorful, balanced, and well seasoned that I would return and order two of these and a shrub and make it a meal.Albondigas: meatballs with Spanish flair. These are wagyu meatballs. Boy are they tender and savory! Nice portion size for a small plate, enough to share. Notes of cumin, olive, and salty cheese play on a platform of chunky, garlicky marinara. The roasted bread is sturdy…and a little tough. It’s an afterthought. The meatballs stand alone here.Mixed Grill: this was an exciting dish! The Maple Grilled pork chop was Seared to perfection. Gorgeous grill marks. Seasoning was on point. It was juicy and glistening when cut. The chorizo is delicious, not as spicy as more traditional preparations, but still flavorful. The Butifarra Negra was a delightful adventure for the senses. A black blood sausage is in dark contrast to the striped white pork and orange chorizo on the plate. Seasoned with Catalonian spices, and clove it tastes like my moms stuffed peppers and Christmas in my mouth. Sadly we could only eat the ends because the center was cold, squishy and uncooked. As a microbiologist and a person who loves black boudin, I know a raw blood sausage can be dangerous. This was foreshadowing our final issue. The 205 day dry aged 10 oz Wagyu Ribeye: This is the priciest item on the menu and we thought it would be the perfect finale for our meat bonanza. It was disappointing. Now we too thought that maybe we were hyping it in our minds so we sat back and analyzed the issues from a logical perspective. The price point on the Wagyu ($67 for 10oz) told us the grade was going to be lower. We’ve sampled the Wagyu at other restaurants and paid hundreds for premium cuts. Also, the menu would have stated if it were grade A or Prime. So when the steak was a bit tough to cut we knew we could expect less marbling or at least a less even distribution of fat in the muscle. We ordered the steak medium rare. It arrived very rare. Like it just kissed a skillet and had no crust on the outside. It was red, cold, and fleshy edge to edge. I returned it. Jacob was very helpful. When it returned, it was clearly just dropped in a pan and left on one side as it was cooked half through on one side and raw at the top. Ok, well someone on the meat station is clearly struggling. Undercooked sausage and this unfortunate failure suggested there was an issue in the kitchen. It should still be tasty, right? Not exactly. We tasted black pepper, but no salt. At all. It was very flat and didn’t even have a meaty flavor. ??? Like what? The marrow on top had no flavor either, it felt more like a blob of tallow than bone marrow. (I’ve had marrow at other restaurants and it’s beefy). There was also a flavor that we couldn’t put our finger on, but I thought it tasted like pencils. This is the highest priced item on the menu, save your money and buy more hand pies instead.

And the prices are not as high as one might think.First if you want a good snack their fries and fancy sauce are legit. On top of that we like to get a Butchers Board mixed with the Cheese Board. It only cost $18 and can easily be a good appetizer for a group of 3 or 4.Then the entrees are to die for. The burger, the steak, the sauteed green beans. It is all good. The food was poor in opinion. The pork tacos were mostly fatty shreds of pork with a slight amount of meat on them. I am all for farm to table dining, and enjoy knowing where and how my entire meal is prepared. That being said if the dining experience and food is lackluster then no amount of farm fresh or butcher in house gimmicks can save a restaurant from being mundane. The basics of a great dining experience should always be the food. Service was adequate and pricing wasnt abysmal but i would forgo both of those factors for a meal that was more than just edible.
