Well...I hate to say it, but Goodbye Hyde Park Records. As a long, long-time customer and dedicated crate digger, I was recently overcharged $9.99 on 28 or 29 albums that I was buying (This was on the Saturday of the Hyde Park jazz festival). I returned to the store on Sunday, and although the worker (not owner) was willing to give me the $8.99 in store credit that day, because I had just dug ALL the crates the previous day and was parked illegally right outside, I did not want to stay. The worker offered, too, to call the owner, but I said, No, man...this isnt an emergency...I just talk to him next time.Next time was today...after picking out a $9.99 and my usual stack of 15-20 crate findings, I spoke to the owner. He wasnt willing to work with me, stating...If you wouldve brought back the records for [him] to look at, etc. The past times I was overcharged $1 and the 2 separate previous times that Ive paid for records in cash and then had to ask the clerk for the change back were tough enough, but I cannot support a store where the owner thinks Im trying to steal from him/pull something over on them.So...Ive enjoyed this store for many years, and the bike ride will be much longer for me, but hello Pilsen record stores (606, pinwheel).
Great vibe. Great vinyl and CD selection. Also a really nice DVD selection. Support local record stores.
One of the most slept on record stores in the nation. Has a completely flipped musical offering than your typical record store(which are heavy on rock/punk, light on soul and great new r&b hip/hop drops) plus it has the coveted listening stations. Also a gem for books if youre into black culture/ black spirituality.
One of the few record shops where you can find dated RnB, Neo Soul, and Hip Hop vinyl records. A lot of record shops around the city will exclusively just sell rock and pop, and just have a small selection of Hip Hop and RnB. Hyde Park records always has the classic albums I grew up on, along with tons of vintage magazines and collectables. Gave a few examples of things Ive found across my vinyl hauls across the city. Most were found at Hyde Park Records though!
Great place Im glad their still in business...from old jet magazines and vinyl to all my old school cds....luv🤎 it. Will be back.
I LOVE IT YOU MIGHT WANT TO WEAR SOME PLASTIC GLOVES GOING THRU THE RECORDS CAN GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY OTHER THAN THAT I LOVE IT THERE ARE GREAT FINDS
Hyde Park Records is a mix bag. They have a little of everything like cassettes, VHS, DVD, magazines and of course vinyl. Sometimes I find a deal but most times its the same stuff. The prices are good though and that keeps me coming back. Plan on spending time to dig here if you come. Check the condition before you leave. No returns.
This place use to be really cool now theres these guys from Europe running the place that are extremely rude !!!!!!
Its always a pleasure and honor to stop there. Good friends, good fun and good music!
Okay place for Old School Hip Hop
Ive been to a few record stores in this city (all great), but this may be the best one.
Found a nice lil piece of art there
It was cool although theyre a DVD selection they dont know what they have
Used vynal records are in excellent condition
Nice place to find old recordings and videos plus beautiful Artwork n
Great selection of old and new albums. I was able to complete my moms original record collection for Christmas. The service was excellent.
Brought a friend who loves music and deejaying. Shocked he had not been before. Manager was very nice to let him show his friends in Michigan the store virtually. Good deal! Good Business! #DowntownHydePark #SSA61 #myhood
Very cool record store, great selection and a nice vibe
Got that old musty spell I love like an old comic book store
Lovely place to find vinyls and cassettes as well as other treasures (books, magazines, posters, etc)
Great place, very friendly...
Great place to peruse old classic albums
For those who enjoy vinyl, Hyde Park records has a good selection to browse through. It was my first time there. I had a few items on my wish list. Even though I didnt find any of those items I will come back. No telling what I may find on my next visit. I enjoy finding items that I wasnt looking for, but wind up buying. Of course I am also happy finding the items that I was looking for.
Friendly atmosphere.
Neat little spot. My mother found her beloved prince records, so she was very satisfied. I plan on returning to see if some of my personal favorite albums are there.
What a cool store. Great selection. Great people who work there. Well organized. I could have stayed for hours but I had a big stack of records and was maxed out.I will come back.
Great place
Loyal customer of this vintage record store
Amazing collection! I could spend hours in the dollar bins! Lots of great finds!
The are some old disco and House records!
Theres some old house vinyl I need to go back and look through.
This is a very quaint shop in not the best location in my opinion. I feel the workers are a little too particular on the items they want to buy. The albums that they had were quite nice though. Several modern albums such as Kendrick Lamars Damn and Drakes Scorpion all at an affordable price.
Good selection and very nostalgic. My parents loved it!
Like Im kicking in it 1986
Rare and Wonderful
The best local used cd and vinyl shop. Ive found a lot of cds that I normally would pay extra for and have to wait for delivery. What ever youre looking for if not in stock they restock on Thursdays or you can orderIt. They take cash and credit.
Super dope selection
Great record collection for sell/ trade. Been shopping there for decades
Impressive selection, especially when youre a funk/soul/disco fan like me. Prices are very reasonable in my opinion. If I lived in Chicago that would be my go to record shop for sure.
This was the kind of place that made me want to linger. They have a selection that feels intentional, and that goes a long way to making any record store seem great. I could go back again and again just to see whats on sale. Easy to get to / easy to park, too!
Lots of old records
COOL STUFF, MAN.
Wonderful little rustic nostalgic spot!!!
Love Jones filmed in here and it is definitely a throwback that is still ladened with superdopeness!
One of my favorite places in the city to crate dig! So many hidden gems here!
Great people dope selections
If spending top $$$$ for garbage records that are completely unlistenable is your thing, then this spot is for you! Many better record shops in the city who actually have integrity in their product and respect for their customers.Stopped in about 20 minutes before they closed and picked up a couple 45s assuming they did some sort of quality control before pricing their albums. Some roots reggae priced at $4.99 per 7. Came home to find the records unlistenable, terribly scratched and horrible quality. I returned to the store a week later with the receipt and records explaining they were unlistenable and asking to exchange them for something of equal value. The (owner?) refused to exchange them and told me I should have listened to them before purchasing. I explained to him they were about to close so I didnt have the time to listen before purchasing. He proclaimed this was my fault and still refused to exchange the records. Mind you, I was looking to exchange them, not for my money back. And I would have happily purchased more (after checking their quality this time) and continued to be a customer.Terrible way to run a business in my opinion. I will never be back and I advise you to stay away. I gave the owner a chance to make things right, he did not. Im down $10. Hes down my business and many others after I spread the word. His loss. Always a fan of supporting local business but this establishment does not deserve that support.
Great price...on GeneJugAmmon albums and more
Some great 2nd hand records here and youll find some vintage tunes that might be hard to find another places.
Definitely that vintage old school record shop vibe, with a pretty decent collection
Awesome shop! Brings back the feeling of going to a record store :)
Friendly place if youre looking for a timeless piece check them out you may find what youre looking for
Superb Shop with Great Selection 😍👍
If music is youre mission, they have it all. Hyde Park Records is a music lovers paradise.
Its one of the few stores thats left in the city of Chicago who actually buys and sells Records, C Ds and Video Tapes!! 👍👍
Great selectionrelaxed atmosphere could spend way too long here!
My two sons and I have been coming here since moving to the Hyde Park/Bronzeville neighborhood in 2012, we love it! Its just full of wonder. You can literally lose yourself in this eclectic jewel. And when I thought it couldnt get any better, they started selling used books. This place just gives off good vibes and Im a GVO type of person.
Not only have I’ve shopped at this place, they also let me shoot a film here. Great product and people.
Great place for your CDs LPs ect...........
If you dont mind digging for records its a good place to go. There are a lot of hidden gems in this store for a very fair price.
I was surprised at some of the vinyl gems I found at this store. A predominant focus on jazz, soul, gospel, and hip-hop. Other genres are represented as well - especially soundtracks and novelty records.
I used to patronize them, but never again. Earlier today their door was opened. But before I could walk in, I was told, Were closed ! Then he came from around the counter & locked the door. 😡I will continue to patronize Amazon 🥰
Love this place! They have such a large assortment of music. Check it out if you havent.
Amazing place. Huge selection. Worth a visit for any music lover.
Lots and lots of Records to go through. Multiple copies of albums at various prices based on condition. Huge dollar section. A lot of really good stuff here!
I had a worst experience there cause the guy just look at records to sell and just dismissed them with out even looking at them at all. I just got a very cold shoulder and wont be back.
Lots of selections to choose from ..best place to be in Hyde park
I love the atmosphere the music that plays in the background and I always find something new in their 99 Cent bin or their rare collection area
The logical and fair answer to dusty groove: the upper crust of record collecting but without the pretense (maybe just a hint of it). excellent jazz section and similar stylistic content youll find at DG but with MANY 99 cent commons to sort through as you waste away an afternoon on your knees. a visit to this place is just the kind of field trip that puts a smile on my fave. highly recommended.
Lovely place to pick up some vinyl
Great to see a record store alive n still running
Amazing selection and genuinely caring staff that want to celebrate the customers
Great staff great prices hidden gems all over the place I think the owner does not know what he or she truly has happy hunting shhhhhh!!!!!!
Friendly staff with great selection of discounted music/videos from various genres
This is a great place. Friendly and informative staff, and an excellent selection of music.
Great place and the staff is awesome ! I highly recommend shopping there.
Skip i-Tunes, or Amazon, if live near by, stop in and visit this place to find some great music you may have forgotten about. I always leave with a couple of CD and end up thinking about buying an old school record player.
Wow the best place to still get cassettes, records and cds
The one and only record shop that is still in Hyde Park, a great shop for vinyl diggers also cds, dvds and more.
I was just in today around 2pm I love it always good DVD for the low amazing.am going back tomorrow
You can find anything here
Helpful sales people
There is always something to buy once you start looking. Lots of used DVDs for a couple of dollars and plenty of CDs and LPs. It is great to have such a place on the south side. When my company from France, Belgium and Finland come it is the first place they want to visit every year and always end up taking their blues and jazz purchases back to Europe with them. The staff has always been friendly and helpful.
Second best ghetto/acid/garage house collection behind gramophone in lincoln park
Casheir was vety friendly made procesd easy to sell my dvds
Been going here for years. They have what I want movies and music wise
My little piece of Zen. You can hangout in the back and listen to vinyl records!! This is everything.
Amazingly wonderful place and customer service
Cute, quaint little shop. Found some reasonable deals!!
Great finds with decent prices.
Theyd have great range of music!!!
DJ INC Homemade Biscuits
Ok to visit but dont expect much when trading in used vintage vinyls for cash. They take what you have but give you pennies for your trouble and charge a bundle for used vinyls.
I love/need this place! I hope its always there.
Could be better.great service.but low end payers on goods
