My old MercuryNow running like it is new. Thanks Sportsman Marine!#HaikuReview
Robert is very old-school. You have to give him a chance with dealing with him. If you want your boat fixed right and not a patch job he is a good guy to see. The first impression is never the best but once you get to know him and he knows you then the dealing gets better. He is not for everyone especially if you get rubbed the wrong way very easily. I completely understand the way he is after dealing with people as long as he has. Trust me the small business service industry is not the easiest and best paying thing in the world. between the customers, boats and employees Im surprised he still has it together!
I find some of these reviews comical. Robert gets 5 stars from me. Hes straightforward and does an excellent job. If you need a shoulder to cry on go to your therapist. Hang out on their couch for 30 minutes to an hour asking for their advice and see if you dont get charged. Go to NTB, Firestone, etc and have them run a diagnostic... see if you dont get charged. This is one of the best & most experienced mechanics in Chattanooga. The evaluation you get from him will be honest and the job will be done correctly. Keep in mind hes running a business - not a charity.
These reviews about Robert make me laugh almost as much as he does. I think he is hilarious, and I could sail a long way with as competent a mechanic, and personable a character as he. I will be glad when my motor is done, because I know that he will do it right.....
He’ll screw you on labor costs. Robert knows his way around boats and motors but you will pay triple or more what it should cost. Really. Triple or more! He told me he was charging me double because he was too busy. He’s a mealy mouthed, crusty old crank. He knows it. $900 labor for probably 3 to 5 hours work. If you don’t mind being gouged on labor costs, and listening to him complaining about the work, he’ll fix you boat. He’s a very competent mechanic and knows very well what he’s doing but he’ll seriously overcharge you in his labor costs.
Thats Robert for you :) Thats just his character. He is really a good person that tries to help, he just is blunt and dont blow crap up peoples butts. He tells you like it is but it will be an honest answer. Most cant handle that. I used to work for him and I would work for him again today. I moved away and have my own shop and buy parts from him a lot. I would not have any problem letting him work on my boat cause I know it will be fixed correctly.
Robert knows more about boats and marine engines than anyone around. He is a genius mechanic. He got my old Monterey ski boat up and running better than she ever has before. Ive read some of the reviews on here and understand where they are coming from, but Ill defend Robert a little bit. 1) He is old school and can be grumpy, but if you really take the time to talk to him, listen to him, and get to know him, you will see that he is actually a genuinely great guy with a quick wit and good sense of humor. My fellow millennials struggle with this I think. 2) Robert is expensive, because spending hours and hours repairing screwed up marine engines is just expensive. You get what you pay for. BE SPECIFIC WITH HIM ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE NEEDING DONE AND TELL HIM TO TALK TO YOU BEFORE ORDERING CERTAIN PARTS OR DOING THINGS YOU MIGHT DEEM UNNECESSARY. I paid him a lot of money to fix my boat, but he did things others probably couldnt or wouldnt have done. Erwin Marine wouldnt even look at my boat. 3) Robert is very busy. I was VERY patient with him. I waited 6 weeks to get my boat back and had to call about every week to check in. He has little to no help and too much work to do. To summarize, if you are wanting a cheap, quick fix for your boat, I would look elsewhere. If you want your boat to run the way it was intended to run and have a few weeks to wait for it, Robert is your man. Go in, pull up a chair, and talk to him. Dont get offended by his initial gruffness. Hes a good dude.
Robert charged me 2 weeks and alot of money and I still have the same problems as before, I wouldnt recommend this place.
If you are looking for a place to purchase a boat, or repair one, dont even consider this place. They make it very known that they dont care about their people, but they only care about your money. They are over priced, and their goal is to steal your money, and make you feel like a cockroach.
Robert is great to deal with, he is very knowledgeable and charges a fair price.
Rip off. He knows his crap but very arrogant and treats people like there idiots if they dont know what hes talking about. Im still learning about boats I went in with 2 props a torn up one and a better newer one and I couldnt fit the newer one on my boat. I was just pricing a prop and explained I didnt have but $20. He asked to look at my boat found a spacer that shouldnt have been on the lower and pulled it out so my prop fit. Then told me I owed him $80. It took 10 mins and he shouldve told me how much before hand. I gave him the $20 I had with me and had to leave the boat there until I had the other $60. No invoice no paper work. Wasnt expecting a hand out and just wanted to know prop size and price. Now Im boat less until I have the sheriff come in in the AM
These guys suck. I walked in to hear them talking about how ni**ers are ruining everything, and how their customers are so stupid they will pay for anything. I immediately left. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE
I had a similar experience as others. Im not as ticked off since I had already read their reviews so I knew what to expect. The guy was extremely willing to give me advice and tell me what I could do myself to fix up an older boat, but his approach and attitude leave a lot to be desired. He told me a bunch of stuff and walked around my boat. We were talking in the shop and he dropped the comment about $80 for his time. Just be prepared for it. Seems like hes gotten burned in the past by people not paying for him to fix their boat up, but some of that might be on him for not being as up front with the cost or very communicative with them as the process progresses and things are discovered.
Great company. Always a fair price and quick turn around on my yearly outboard tuneups.
Good place to pickup parts
Good people very helpfull with any boating repairs or getting parts
Cant get hold of this place to ask a simple question. The number provided is a Mobile Phone, and their INBOX is FULL ... which means you CANT CONTACT THEM
This man (who claims to be a Christian) will rip you off in labor costs and try to make you think he is doing you a favor. He has an arrogant attitude and acts like he doesn’t give a dam about what his customers think.
They will let you know that they dont want or need your business and they dont have time for you.
Knows subject matter expert ( SME)
My husband has been trading with him for over 20 years. He is in the business of making money. He is old school, which means he works on the old cliche; business is business and bullshit is bullshit!! Dont expect something for nothing.
Would give 0 stars if I could...terrible customer service. Go somewhere else. The owner of this place has his head real far up his stern parts.
Wouldnt do business with this guy. Was looking for a part for my boat. He acted like he didnt want to help me. When talking to me he was not very professional, for that reason he will not get my business.
