This little gem is tucked away behind a the old Door Store location off Preston Avenue, but well worth the search. Theres plenty of parking and a very friendly greeting from Janee when you get there. My stylist was prompt, attentive and cheerful, without gossip! There was lots of activity but distancing rules were honored. Everyone was wearing a mask.

Not impressed. Came here for a blonde balayage and my hair looks the same as it did before, Im just out $320+. They did a poor job toning as my hair is pretty yellow in most places. They also charged me for a conditioning treatment I didnt ask for (actually told me it was going to be complimentary because I was waiting for so long and then added it to the bill). Save your money and dont come here. (First picture is what my hair looks like, second photo is what I asked for).

Mya was amazing! She even curled my hair after the cut. I’m so happy with how quick yet thorough she was. Will definitely be back to see her! Also hands down the coolest salon I’ve ever been to. Have been getting my hair cut here for 3 years and they also did the hair and makeup for my wedding. Great people and always do an amazing job. All of the hair and makeup at our wedding was awesome. Would 100% recommend for any hair/makeup needs around Charlottesville!

I came in expecting a bit of an experience and to work with someone to achieve the look I was after. My stylist was completely dismissive of my interests and even seemed annoyed by my questions. She basically took a few inches off and sent me on my way. I can see that many others have been really pleased with their service so I may have just shown up on an off day but I am disappointed- I was looking for some real change.

I have suuuuuper thick wavy hair kept at an asymmetrical chin length layered bob. Chain hair salons have never worked for me. If you struggle to have a good cut from these types of places, give Moxie a try! You dont know what a great cut, style, and color can feel like until you have it. Lots of talented people at Moxie. Very friendly staff, not at all a stuffy, snobby place. Ive felt intimidated at chic high end salons before, but Moxie is so welcoming. Best front desk service Ive experienced at a salon. Best hair washes. Ive been to a few other higher end salons in the area, and Moxie is my favorite. Shout out to Sarah who has been with me through so many styles and colors for a few years now. Shes so relaxed and patient with me as I throw different ideas at her every visit. Always walk away feeling better. You guys rock!!!

I love Andrea at Moxie! She is an absolute wizard when it comes to color, and I am always so happy to go to her. I get fashion colors, and Andrea is the best in town! If you are even thinking about color, she will kindly talk you though it and make good and healthy recommendations for your hair. She knows her stuff, and will make sure you are making healthy choices for your hair and talk to you about maintaining the color. I went to her recently for a quick style and question, and she was fantastic. The salon space is really beautiful, big and spread out, and everyone was being very careful and wearing masks. I felt comfortable in there. Andrea gets a 5 star!I do have to complain about one of Moxies receptionists, though. I had contacted the stylist directly for a last minute appointment, and she had had a free book all day. I immediately called in and the receptionist lied to me on the phone that she was booked until much later in the evening, even though I knew it wasnt true. The receptionist wouldnt even check with the stylist to see if there was a mistake, even though the stylist had a free book for the rest of the day. Why lie to clients on the phone and not get business? So if you are told on the phone that your favorite stylist is booked all day, you may want to check in with your stylist directly to make sure thats true. This is why I took off a star.

I had a fantastic experience at Moxie - they came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Great atmosphere, thoughtful decor and great vibe . I met the owner Todd and instantly liked him - great guy who really cares about his business and clientele. I was also extremely impressed by Taryn Mcclung who cut and highlighted my hair . She is fantastic and truly gifted at her craft. I am thrilled with my hair but more so that I’m happy to support such a great business.

What a wonderful experience it was. Shalin, my operator, gave me a great feathery and short cut and color (using my own color product.) The staff was friendly, and attentive, the appointment timely and I will return as well as recommend Moxie to others. Plenty of parking and handicapped accessible.

Wish there was a zero star option. The service was overpriced, it was bad, and the owner was insulting and incredibly rude! Not only did I spend three hours and nearly $300 in their chair, my hair did NOT turn out even close to what I asked for. No, it wasnt mutilated, but it looked damn near exactly what it had before going into the salon.I dont spend much money on myself, especially not in the salon. I moved here from Idaho last year and in preparation of a family reunion (of whom I hadnt seen in nearly a year), and for a birthday treat to myself I decided to get my hair refreshed. Im a natural blonde but it was become much darker as I age. I wanted a simply balayage and brought with me several inspirational photos.At the end, my hair was largely unchanged. I was overcharged, and VERY rudely treated when I asked if I could come back for some blonde added in. I wasnt allowed to get a single word in. The owner told me it was MY fault for not knowing what I was talking about and not using the correct terms like foilyage and melting root. He cut me off time and time again and told me I shouldnt want to go lighter blonde because thats a summer blonde. This is FALL, you dont need to go that light until SUMMER.Ultimately, I was crying with frustration in their chair as he continued to insult me and tell me I was wrong and they werent going to fix my hair unless I made another appointment, 3 MONTHS OUT! OH! And when I mentioned the price his response was if you cant afford this then whatever you can afford, like $100, then tell he that and we will prepare $100 worth of dye and just have to do that I guess.Guys. It was the WORST customer service experience of my life! I was devastated! I urge you not to trust this place nor give them your business. Go literally anywhere else!

Ive come here a few times now, and its still top notch service with good vibes. Both times Mya has done my hair and I couldnt be happier. This is my favorite salon, and now the ONLY one Ill go to get my hair messed with!

Friendly cashiers greeted me with cheerful hellos. The shampooer was quick to wash my hair and give a relaxing massage (very gentle) Kitty ALWAYS gives a great cut and makes me feel like Im important. I cant recommend the other stylists, but I love Kitty who I always see!

Andrea has been doing my hair for nearly 3 years & shes the best. I do the fun colors & she is quick, efficient, always super friendly, & cares about the health of my hair. I reached out to Moxie after being less than impressed with a color job by another salon. They were so quick to get me in for a consultation and so responsive. Amanda talked me through what was going on with my color, what she thought would be the best plan of attack, and got me scheduled ASAP, all while making me feel so confident about the process.My appointment with Amanda exceeded expectations. The entire Moxie team has found a way to seamlessly include being responsible about COVID into the fun, upbeat salon environment. I walked in trying to keep any expectations at bay, knowing my hair would require a lot of work and time. Amanda worked her magic and not only got my hair back in shape, but got it so much lighter than I thought was possible. While we’re still not done with the process, I feel so confident wearing my hair down and styling it, instead of keeping it up and hidden. She is such a wonderful addition to Charlottesville 💛

Always a great experience! Its hard to find a place that is super consistent but Moxie is 100% everytime. Your stylist wants to take their time and make you look good and isnt trying to get as many cuts done as they can in an hour.

Highly recommend Andrea at Moxie! Especially if you’re interested in fun colors and edgy styles. I felt like Andrea really got me, and she is absolute magic with scissors. Could not have loved my haircut more!

Wide open, clean place with good safety measures and skilled stylists.Im giving this salon 5 stars despite needing to get color adjusted once, because as anyone knows hair color is a very subjective experience. The first color was nice enough and the stylist was very nice, also a great hair cutter. I never looked bad, it just wasnt the bright color I wanted. When I called back they had a different stylist redo the color with brilliant results.I think you can really judge a salon by what happens when things dont go to plan. By that rule this is a really fantastic place and you should feel comfortable going. Im planning to return myself.

Fielding does a great job with my thick, wavy hair. DeLuna is my favorite shampoo tech. All staff does a great job following COVID precautions.

Shallan gave me an excellent Deva cut for my curly hair!! I’m SO pleased with how it turned out — I feel like this is the first haircut I’ve had where the stylist actually understands my hair and how to work with it and make it look good! They also shampooed and conditioned my hair and then Shallan styled it, again using great techniques. I will definitely be coming back!

I have relied on Andrea to improve the look and feel of my fine-textured and colored hair since I moved to Charlottesville in 2015. She has consistently recommended products that soothed my sensitive scalp, and restored thickness and shine to my hair. I leave each session feeling reinvigorated and appreciate the excellent COVID protocols followed during my visits.

I have been going to Angie at Moxie for many years. She has seen me through growing out my color to grey hair and growing out a short pixie cut to a lob. Even when I was growing out my hair, my cuts always looked good and I was constantly getting compliments on my hair, even through the awkward stages. Now that it is grown out, I still get compliments. I am not one to spend a lot of time doing my hair daily, so a good cut is really important. Angie is extremely gifted and kind. I truly consider my time spent at Moxie with Angie as self-care as she not only makes my hair look great, she also creates a cut that I can easily take care of and looks great for weeks to come and treats you as a friend. Very professional and kind hearted.

I havent had my hair done professionally in a couple of years. I wanted to love this place. I wanted to leave being super excited about my new hair (I got a full balayage and a glaze). I left so disappointed. I naturally have dirty blond hair and was told itd be really easy to lighten me up- after sitting in a chair for 3 hours and spending $360+, my hair looks essentially the same. The only difference, I feel my hair now has that grey-blue tint because the glaze was left in too long. That brings me to my next issue. The girl that washed and glazed my hair was the absolute worst. I believe her nickname may have been Shi or Shay- she has a Cross tattoo on the right side of her face. She washed my hair in cold water, was definitely pulling my hair, splashed my face with water multiple times to where there was no way it was an accident, and actually chuckled a little when I started wiping my running mascara. The icing on the cake was when I overheard a conversation between one of the owners and their client. The client had stated the last time she was in she received the worst haircut of her life. The owner asked who she had, she said Michael, then I kid you not, the owner goes- oh yeah, he just thinks he knows what hes doing, he doesnt actually. But hes not here anymore, he moved. So not only do they allow unskilled stylists, but the owners are aware of the skill level and choose not to do anything about it. The guy left, he wasnt fired. I will never be back here and I would never recommend this place to a friend.

I normally like Moxie but my recent cut was not great. I have fine hair and wanted one inch max blunt cut, light shaping at front of face. She cut off over three inches and gave me layers which I’ve always hated. I look pretty ‘meh’ now, more like a mom haircut and pretty annoyed about it as it had taken me a long time to get to that length.

I have never waited more than 5 minutes for my appointment and most of the time they are right on time. My stylist is Emily and I always leave looking great with a clean cut and fresh style. I went in for my first Balayage. I had blond highlights on dark brown hair before. They charged me double what I was quoted on the phone and it doesn’t look different at all! It was horrible! I was there forever because the process is so long only to walk out having paid almost $300 and looking the same. Not a single person in my life even noticed a difference in my hair. I went in with a photo reference and came out looking the same. Everyone I’ve seen since tells me how much i got ripped off by a salon that things their fancier and upscale. If you’re taking advantage of customer and not consulting them first I would say you’re the most unprofessional salons in town. When I expressed my feelings about what they were charging me the owner came over to shower me with compliments and then still charged me!!!!! They said “honey what you had done would normally cost $400.” Are you kidding me? I’m so unhappy with this place. I even chose a junior stylist so that I gave them experience and it was SUPPOSED to be cheaper...EXCEPT NOT! If I could attach a picture I would! I would go back in and demand they fix it but this place made me feel like I had no other option but to say I liked it. The stylist was amazing other than the fact that I didn’t get what I had hoped for in the slightest and they didn’t even try. They could have had me walk out looking more like the picture but they took advantage of me instead and did nothing to fix it.

Saw a junior stylist who listened to EXACTLY what I wanted and gave me a cut that was exactly what I asked for. Usually when I tell people that I want a low maintenance cut for long, curly hair, they give me 3 products I must use, tell me I need to blow dry it every morning, etc. At Moxie, she recommends only one product but have me a cut with which the product wasnt even necessary. She used a diffuser to dry my hair a little, but that is also completely unnecessary to maintain the look. My hair looks just as good two weeks later as it did the day of the cut.... and with no work or product.

I usually hate getting my hair cut. I dont blow dry it or color it, and most hair stylists spend a lot of time trying to convince me to change my ways. I was pleasantly surprised to not have this experience at Moxie. More importantly, they did a great job cutting and styling my hair!

Holy Baloney! :D I hadnt gotten my hair cut to my shoulders since middle school, and Im now 23. My hair has always stayed lengthy, about down to my belly button, but I was looking for a change. I wanted a fun, shaggy cut suitable for spring and summer that really fit my style. When Rachel walked up and I saw her tattoos and colored hair, I knew she was gonna see my vision too! :) She did not disappoint! Gave me what I was looking for, and her artistic opinions and ideas were well received and trusted! If youre a punk princess, indie gal, or the fun-loving wild-haired hippy type, see senior stylist Rachel! :) I have honestly never loved a cut as much as this one! (Bonus: She even blow-dried and styled my hair as I would have done at home, rather than giving me a straight, average and boring blowout).Very impressed with cleanliness of the salon and the atmosphere too! :) 5/5 experience. I showed Dana a picture of my last haircut that I really liked, and she made some recommendations based off what I showed her. I loved the products she used in my hair - they were absolutely perfect for my hair type, and the way she styled it. Best of all - its been a few days and I still love it after styling it myself!

This was my first time here and it was great! The staff was very friendly and I loved the haircut I got. The haircut was very reasonably priced, but did not lack in quality. For the same haircut in Northern Virginia it would of been at least double the cost!

I just had the most amazing experience with Emily. I came in with heavily damaged tips from a home “bleach and dye job” and washed out, brassy green color that needed to go immediately for my sister’s wedding. I am a novice when it comes to dying hair (obviously) and Emily was able to translate what my needs and wants were and turn them into a stunning reality. My sister is beyond relieved that I won’t have green hair for her wedding and I am beyond pleased with the full color/partial balayage treatment I had done today. I feel more confident after leaving Moxie than I have in a very long time. (And thank you to Lauren for helping out and pairing me with the right stylist!)

I have had trouble with my hair since I was about 14, and then I had 2 kids and my hair went downhill fast. Cici was the first stylist to come in with whats our end-goal, and how do we get there? She gave me a WONDERFUL hair cut, great advice on how to reach my hair goals, and helped me pick out products that were best for me, without overselling or making me buy things I didnt need.My hair looks better than it has in YEARS, and it feels great! Ive gotten tons of compliments and cant wait to go back!

When previous hair and make up artist cancelled with an hours notice Erica came to my rescue. She found a perfect time slot for me for trial hair and make up for our sons wedding. Miriam was fantastic! We will be back day of wedding with an area reserved just for us,.Todd, the owner, stopped by to chat and put me at ease that all would go well for wedding. Fantastic!! Can’t wait to return!!

I went here to get my roots bleached and hair cut when my regular barber couldn’t fit me in and I will never go back. My hair was bleached by someone who clearly had no idea what to do, bleaching it only once and without any heat even though I have dark brown hair. Then, after toning, he realized I wasn’t close to achieving the lift I had been looking for and proceeded to bleach my hair again, cooking my scalp. I left the appointment with yellow roots, purple hair, and no haircut because my skin was too sensitive to cut it. I’ve had my hair bleached consistently every six weeks for about two years and this has never happened to me. Even after my hair and scalp was destroyed, I was still charged $100. Do not go here.

Let me preface by saying this was my first time going here. I had previously gone to Bristles, but after a disastrous haircut, I wanted to try something new. Since I drive by Moxie all the time I decided to give it a try.It was completely worth it!I saw Richard and the first thing he did after sitting me down in his chair was ask me what I wanted. I explained to him I didnt really know, but I wanted to keep it long. I was open to other suggestions about my hair. He was wonderful by truly listening and giving his opinion, which I loved. Richard was chatty and very easy to talk to. He gave me a beautiful haircut and I truly enjoyed the experience which doesnt happen often for me. Im very pleased and will definitely recommend him to everyone.

Hey this place is wonderful! I went yesterday to get a bob cut from my very long hair. I was nervous because Ive never had short hair, but the stylist who cut my hair did a fantastic job. Its flattering to my face shape and the right length/weight to stop my curls from shrinking up or having too much volume in a weird place. Its also a great building and a good experience. I really, really loved this place!

Today I met Angie and she has a customer for life! I cant say enough good things about the whole experience. I love the space, I love that Angie got me and I love my hair!! The girl that did my shampoo was obviously busy but she did not rush and took her time massaging my neck. I used to work near their old space and Im kicking myself for not trying them years ago!!

I have been going to Moxie, and Todd, the owner, for more years than I can remember. I have ALWAYS had a good experience. On the rare occasion that I just didnt like the cut or color, Todd has always fixed the problem. Todd is extremely approachable and wants to make things right. If you have an issue, ask to speak with him. Like any business that provides service to the public, approaching the problem in a calm and adult-like manner will get you much further than screaming and complaining about the issue. I have found that the staff at Moxie will bend over backwards to make things right. Wouldnt go anywhere else.

The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the haircut was outstanding! Their prices are steep. If you need a quality cut, and can afford to spend the extra dough, Moxie will take great care of you.

My wife went in for a full coloring on Jan 20 with Ashley. The top was too dark. She made an appointment to correct it today, but the stylist was dismissive, then said she would have to reschedule if she wanted her to do anything.She has been going to Moxie for a few years and Richard was her stylist. He has since left, which is a shame. My wife and daughter will not be going to Moxie anymore.

I see Richard and he is ALWAYS professional and works with me on my hair issues. Love love love him!

I came in to get a trim by a junior stylist. The cut itself was okay but the stylist was so rough with my hair that I had a headache when I left. I watched him pull/break off an unnecessary amount of hair while brushing after my wash cause he was brushing so hard. Also when I asked if he could blow dry my hair on a low setting to minimize damage he said he had to blow dry at a high temperature and he could finish on low, but at that point the damage was already done. I think my hair was in better condition before my haircut than after.

Shallan gave me a red toned balayage, and it looks great! The atmosphere is awesome, and all of the stylists are super knowledgeable. Additionally, they offered me beverages while my hair toned to keep me comfortable. Highly recommend!
