They did a great job servicing my horns. I have a few criticisms but I am still giving five stars because they did such good work. I will bring my horns back here in a year or two.Criticism one. They gave me a specific date to bring in the horns, two months in the future, but after that long wait, they didnt know who I was and the guy that would do the work wasnt ready to start. My horns sat for weeks before he got started.Criticism two. No one ever told me how much it would cost to work on the horns until the moment I got the invoice. Id say the bill was about triple what I expected. The original scheduler said the tech would give me a quote, but he was halfway through the work when he called to say the horns were pretty bad and he didnt know how much more work there was to do.Criticism three. After the tech started on the work, it still took something like two months for him to finish and return the horns to me.Next time Ill be pressing hard on timing and price up front. The quality of the work cant be contested.

Years in the past I have had great service with J.L. Smith; however, this past time I have visited will be my last. I called the front line on the phone and asked if my clarinets could be brought in for a Clean, Oil, and Adjust service (yearly maintenance). The receptionist said that the repair shop would give me a call later in the afternoon because they were on lunch. So I waited and never received a call back; that day or the next. I decided to bring them into the shop myself. I spoke with Jamie and he explained to me that they were backed up in the schedule and he would have them ready in two weeks. So I agreed and left both my A and Bb clarinets with him.Two weeks and one day later I called the repair office again to check in on them, only to find out that neither of the instruments had been touched at all. He told me that he was going to call me later that day and tell me that they were not ready. I understand that the summer may be a hectic time for a repair shop, but I was left in the dark the entire time and had to call them myself in order to find out what was even going on. When I talked to Jamie on the phone he asked if “I was on the schedule”.. I didn’t understand what that meant. But to me, if I give you both of my instruments to be repaired and you tell me that they will be done in two weeks, I should be on your schedule. I was also told that they wouldn’t be able to work on them For another week when ANOTHER repair technician comes and can work on them. Obviously I declined. When I went to pick them up, the repairman didn’t come to the door to explain what happened. Instead, the secretary delivered a message from him saying “if you want these repaired just call and have it scheduled.”I am a music performance student and these instruments are what my education depends on. The more time away from practice, the more time that’s wasted. And in this case I have wasted two weeks waiting for this company to tell me that they haven’t done anything to my instruments. Now I will have to wait even more time to get them actually cleaned and adjusted by another company because J.L. Smith has failed.I used to recommend this company to everyone for any woodwind repair or anything. I can see that someone else in these reviews has had the same problem so I know it isn’t just me. This is inexcusable and disloyal to customers and for the price they charge, their service is NOT worth it.Be cautious

Becca is an absolute ANGEL. I asked to try some headjoints and she literally packed them up and had them overnighted to me and on my doorstep the very next day. I didn’t have to spend anything and I had a truly wonderful experience. I felt bad that I didn’t prefer the headjoints I tried more than the one I had, but that’s no reflection of their quality. The headjoints were amazing! I’m still so touched by how lovely this company is. Please give them your business! Some of the larger companies could learn a thing or two about amazing customer service from these incredible people. I had a better experience spending nothing here than I have spending thousands elsewhere. That should speak volumes by itself. I absolutely can’t recommend them enough.

James is a great asset. He tuned up my sons r 13 this summer. Developed a small leak and he fixed it while we waited. Also found a couple of keys sticking and adjusted those too.

Ive used this companys website a few times for instrument repair materials. Im extremely happy with all of my experiences! Not only am I able to find top-quality materials at precise measurements, but their pricing is typically very fair. They offer pricing discounts when buying in bulk, too...which is nice for repair shops or directors of large band programs. My favorite thing about this company is that they have specific sales reps who work with you when your order is placed.Ive used this site to purchase sets of pads to re-pad clarinets, saxophones, and flutes. Each time, a rep has looked through my order and clarified sizes with me. For instance, I just recently made a purchase to repad an E-flat clarinet. Some of the pad sizes raised a red flag, so my representative clarified with me. After specifying which instrument I was repairing, she verified that my sizes and pad selections were exactly what they should have been.I cannot recommend them enough!

All things flutes. I love every visit to JL Smith. Today the visit was to help another one of my students find a new flute. They set you up with a 2-hour appointment, put flutes out in your price range, and have you try them out, while receiving professional input. It is a wonderful way to flute shop. Doesnt get any better!

Excellent instrument repair services. I consulted them on a bass clarinet and a tenor saxophone. If you want to do your own repairs, they will provide advice and advise on tools. Provide follow-up too; their overhauls always result in a responsive instrument.

Ive now taken six (maybe seven) of my woodwinds--saxes, clarinets, and flutes-- in for some type of repair. The folks are always friendly and professional, and they do great work.

J L Smith saves the day!My daughter was to perform in her first ever York County Honors Band. Two days prior she noticed an issue with a key on her flute. She couldnt get the note to play. I called Alex at J L Smith and later that same day I was there for the repair. They were able to fix the flute while I waited. When I returned home I had a very happy daughter and a wonderful performance. This is the second time they were able to troubleshoot and fix a key so quickly. How valuable it is to have local company that we trust with these precious instruments. Thank you J L Smith!

Jeff Smith agreed to fix a piece of brass for me on August 25. He said he would fix it by August 29. He understood that it was very urgent that it be fixed ASAP, as I had sold the piece and needed to send it to the buyer. I called every day that week, and each day, he said it was not ready. On August 29, he said he would need more time but would have it ready by September 5 at the latest.I called September 1, 2, and 3rd, to confirm that it would be ready by the 5th. Each day, his office confirmed that it would be ready. Then, on the 4th, when I called, he said It wont be ready on the 5th after all, and I am going out of town the following week. You can come pick it up if you want to. I have not fixed it and will not fix it before going out of town.He never apologized. He said it would take one hour to fix it, yet he refused to fix it. I offered to pay him a rush fee, do to anything to get it fixed, and he refused to fix the brass, after promising me every day for 2 weeks that he would fix it.If Jeff Smith had been honest with me in the first place, that he was not willing or able to fix it, I could have found someone else to fix it. But I relied upon his promises, and as a result, I lost a $600 sale.I do not trust any business owner who does not stand by his word or his promises, particularly when he does not even apologize after misleading me. I would never recommend JL Smith to anyone, and I will certainly never do business with Jeff Smith again.
