I love going to Amoeba. I seem to always find the music Im looking for in vinyl or CD. They have a good video selection too.
A truly endangered species, the locally owned record store. A prime example of what was once the heart of every towns music scene, the internet having taken over that and pretty much every other role these places used to serve. Definitely check it out well were still luckily enough to have it around.
Amoeba unfortunately could die out, the pandemic really messed things up....I have been shopping there since I was in my teens; this place is truly iconic! They even do live shows!? Whats there not too like about Amoeba? So please support this wonderful record (vinyl, videos, CDs Hard to find stuff) store. Theres one on Telegraph in Berkeley, one Haight street in SF & one Los Angeles. LETS HELP THEM STAY OPEN!
Always my go to old time CD/ Record store. Staff is super knowledgeable & friendly, too.
Very wide selection on vinyls, cassettes, CDs, movies and shows on DVD and blue ray. I love the 1 dollar section because Im cheap haha. Lots of gems
It depends on what you are shopping for. Vinyl is huge, CDs and DVDs shrinking.
Nice vibe, dope vinyls. The dollar vinyl section is a must see!
Check to make sure it’s open—reduced days due to Covid.
Great store, but do you guys even test out used records before reselling them? Like seriously... 3/3 of the used records i got dont play for Jack s***, skipping, loops, scratches... the whole 9 yards. Doesnt make sense to sell a record that doesnt play right? Or is that just me?
Best record store in the Bay area.
Very organized . everything is where is supposed to be alphabetically. Great selection of music on all genres especially rare and hard to find vinyl and CDs. nice atmosphere . only downside is parking there is not much almost got a ticket. but hey you are in downtown berkeley. There are many parking garages around you could park. Dont risk getting a ticket.
Great selection.great prices.
If you want LPs, Amoeba is the place to go.And they are open on Thursdays and Fridays, unlike their competitor one block away.
I am used to going to the Hollywood location but its great to be able to come to Berkeley and be able to stop at Amoeba to pick up some movies. Great vibe and even better customer service..
Love the place, go there every week
Very disappointed that the Berkeley Amoeba has downsized to a point where it is nothing special anymore. It use to be good enough where I would find CDs and DVDs that were more to my taste. Now the pickings are slim. The San Francisco and Hollywood stores are still the crowning glories in the franchise.
The blon jangs
Its like being a kid in a candy store!
So lucky to have an Amoeba an hour away! Dig the selections! Bought myself an Amoeba license plate frame for my Yaris, thats how much I love them LoL
Great hip hop tracks playing while I picked over used classical vinyls. They have it all...selection, prices, smart staff, location, legacy.
Amoeba is a needed experience and you can almost guarantee they will have something your music collection needs.
Love this store, but its in 2nd place behind the SF store. Go to both!
Great Music Selection for all genres. This is definitely on my recommended Must Visit List!!
Great record store!
Cool place. Historic items and music. A must visit when in Berkeley 👍💯
Lots of good selections
It was a good experience. I missed not being able to explore a music store. Been listening to sabbath since 74. Got M. Schenker, KMFDM, Grand Funk Live. Prices were lower than pre-Covid. And sfaff we very helpfull.
Always a treat going to Amoeba
Good service and its all at a good price.
Consider that this place is a true rarity, a real record store! I always thought it to be better than Flashy Tower Records. Now it is going up against The Internet, and surviving! Why? Because of selection, service and the fun factor. Bonus: you can actually meet people like yourself there. Also the novelty of touching real physical items should not be underestimated.
Found a 4 year old store credit for $20 while cleaning my truck, and it was still good!! Picked up some old movies that arent streaming online anywhere. Lots of hard to find movies. Not great for new movies, cause they cost more here, but thats not really their business. Could get lost browsing in here for a day.
Find some great treasures
Dropped of some promo vinyl records. Big store and selection of music right on Telegraph in Berkeley.
The quality of the used selection has fallen greatly over the years. You’d be extremely lucky to find something great in the used bins these days. And the buyers seem to be less friendly and more weasely than they were in the past. But I will say it’s a good place-probably the only place in the bay area to find a lot of the new releases on vinyl and CD outside of the internet. SF Amoeba tends to have a way better new and used selection and friendlier staff if you don’t mind driving that far.
Amoeba has a quite broad selection of CDs, Vinyls, DVDs and other music and film related merchandise. However, with how diversified the selection is, it was mildly disappointing for me as a fan of a very specific genre of music, as only those bands considered popular for the genre were featured. I do understand that this is the case with almost any store which sells any diversity of products, and that this is my completely biased opinion. Though I did notice that the specific section in which I was interested was significantly smaller than the rest. Go here if youd like to purchase things from the more mainstream rock genre.
A truly amazing music store. Especially for records. They have the largest and most diverse selection I think Ive ever come across for a record store. Everyone there is super cool too. The only thing is that sometimes their prices seem a little high but other than that I absolutely love amoeba.
Excellent record selection, one of the best in East Bay. They have most artists, and a small selection of $1 used records. Would def recommend this place. There is also a record shop down the block if you wanted to hit up two in one.
I thought they were closing so to my surprise when I arrived in Berkeley they were open! Same as it used to be tons and tons of cool records great stuff just all around cool vibe Hope they stay forever
They are nice enough people to tell and/or show you what your looking for BUT of course being a vast music store you may or may not find it. I recommend the internet over music stores these days. Sorry Amoeba.
This place is amazing from the awesome posters to the metal CDs and vinyl selection! The staff was ok, the weird thing is having to check your bag when you go in. I kinda understand because the area, but its not too welcoming. Especially when they tell you bag. You gotta leave your bag up here. Like you know the drill. Other than that, the place is great.
I love Rasputin and all, but Amoeba has such an awesome collection and its so nicely organized. They have stickers too for certain bands, its really cool
My favorite store luv
This is an Amazing recorded music and videos store. One of 3 locations. Many rarities you wont find anywhere else. Records, tapes, CDs, DVDs, both used and new, affordable pricing. Sell your old stuff here for cash or in store credit. Any time were visiting the city we check out this iconic store in there SF or Berkeley locations.
Cool records with a combination of new releases and treasures from the past. I like that there are well loved copies that only cost a few bucks as well as beautifully preserved albums that are so worth the investment. I dig the movie selection as well. Not to mention a knowledgeable staff that keeps the whole place feeling like the institution it is.
Great music selection. Prices for new releases are higher than online but you have to support your brick and mortar records shop. The clearance bin is great, just wished there was a greater choice there than amoeba in SF.
Very nice staff and quick to have the latest albums in stock.
Nice atmosphere! A lot of cool stuff can be found here!
Long Live Vinyl...
Buy here. Support local record shops. We need them. Amazon is not all that. Anyway, the place is funky and always has great music playing while you hunt for treasures.
Youre not gonna find CDs at any other stores.
It has the best selection of music. I have spent many hours shopping here...and will continue to do so in the future. Their Black Metal section is AMAZING!!
It seems that Amoeba is in retrograde. I spent countless hours there in my youth. Filled with music in various formats and collectable toys books and more. Todays Amoeba is a shell of it illustrious past, navigating the crowds of shoppers is gone. You can move with ease. Selections are
Theyre closed. They were too lazy to update that on here. Thanks for wasting my time coming all the way from the east bay
I love Amoeba! Ive been going here for about 10 years, and I love the selection of used CDs and vinyl. And the prices cant be beat! Im sad to see it reduced in size so drastically, but I guess thats the Amazon effect.
The records I bought had scratches on them.
Amoeba, amoeba, amoeba. My heart is beating hard everytime i see ya.Always exciting to spend hours here trying to find or discover new or old records.Like a kid in toys store, like a voyage in the future or the past, it is always different and always surprising. This place is magic with a huge collection of beautiful music from all over the world. Explore, listen and exhale.
Holy Moley, this place has a TON of vinyls, especially a few that I was looking for but could not find. I didnt grab anything the first time I came in, but I DEFINITELY will be coming back. Amoeba is legendary. Its impossible to go anywhere in the Bay without seeing an Amoeba music bumper sticker or t-shirt. And their popularity is well deserved.
Great variety with prices not very friendly for lps. CDs with good prices.
Best place for Rare Records! I could stay in this place all day looking for Music :)
Dude, update your hours. This place is totally closed right now fyi.
Amoeba was the last Music store coming to Berkeley & reminds me a lot of Leopolds records those that remember how Telegraph ave Berkeley business in 1990s. Music stores went out of business due to internet downloads & digital. This is the place if you like hard copies of music or you are interactive person.
They had a better selection at this location then Haight Street. The employees are hella rude but if you know what you want look for yourself.
I like that theres a amoeba close by but my only complaint is many of these vinyl are warped from being here so long or being in front of the slot theyre placed in. Make sure check if your vinyl is warped before buying. Other than that the staff was friendly and helpful. I will definitely be coming back.
Extensive collection of music in a few formats with decent pricing on most items, even the out of print choices
Lots of new, old, and nostalgic music. Movies as well. You want CDs, albums or cassette tapes? They have it all.
Excellent place for vinyl. Some really rare records to be found. Ask for assistance if you need something special.
If you cant find something great to listen to here, youre not looking. Great selection at low prices
Found some cool deals on special edition movies here like the dark crystal. But compared to the other two locations in San Francisco and Hollywood the muaic selection is really just okay.
Total waste of time if you like record shopping and are looking for places with something of a soul or personality to it. Tons of new records that you would find anywhere and would be probably better off ordering on amazon for that matter. You end up spending hours flipping through tons of uninteresting stuff and the few that are worth the wait are totally overpriced... It was my second visit, first was pretty much the same, but I thought Id give it a second chance. There wont be a third... Sherry on the cake, staff is not particularly nice either.
Look, I dont know who does the ordering but if you cant have a decent selection on AC/DC, Iron Maiden, or many other bands I dont know how yall are still in business.I know not everyone is into the same musical tastes but having only a couple of albums (literally 2 records) of some more popular bands is all bad.Ive lived in the area for 6 years and Amoeba Music is the same in Berekely as it is on Haight.I buy my records at Criminal Records in Atlanta because when I want to buy a record, they have it.
Best place in the city for music. Just about every obscure band you can think of is here! Mecca of record stores.
Here youre guaranteed to leave with a grin on your face. Stellar selection of soul, funk and jazz and very, very reasonable prices. One of my favorite things about Amoeba Music is that the owner is not afraid to put imperfect records in the store so for example you can buy a record that would sell for say $60 someplace else, you can buy a VG- copy here for $10. And you can expect to pay 50% less on anything here than what other CA . stores charge. Amoeba Music rocks! Dont miss it!
One of the largest used record stores Ive ever seen
I get to visit Amoeba about once every two years but it never disappoints. Employees are usually busy but always happy to stop and help you find something. The one thing I always forget is to bring a list of music Im looking for. It can really help because its kind of overwhelming how much stuff is in there. That being saud wandering the aisles and just happening upon something I want is fun if you have time. Cant wait to visit again.
Not as big as the one on Haight in SF, but still a great selection.
I always check the selection in the salsa/Cuban/Latin jazz CD section to glean material for my public radio show on KBUT when Im in the East Bay. Varies with the annual visit but didnt disappoint this time!
Huge place. on vinyl they mainly have Rock, Jazz, ... a little bit of HipHop and Reggae, Electronic music: none. Very nice Guys behind the counter. Good prices, also. Worth a visit if youre looking for old stuff...
This place Amoeba Records has been there for quite a long time. If youre interested in getting CDs of anytime they still have them. You can also trade in your old one or you can receive money for them not a whole lot of money but some
Amazing record store. Lots of hard to find movies in Stock as well. Just a great place to get lost in the old school feeling of flipping through records. Great staff.
Great music store and in my opinion a west coast establishment. A great place for new and used records along with other formats too. Prices are reasonable and its still definitely possible to pick some gems if youre a good digger. The majority of process are discogs median + $4 -- however Ive definitely come across more than one record being sold at half its value. Always a good selection of uncommon and rare albums with a great variety of classics and must have records. The staff are helpful and the vinyl is well organized. Always worth stopping in if youre around and a solid destination record store if youre looking for a couple hours of digging.
I’ve been in record stores before but I wasn’t ready. This place is a god send. Like I think I walked into heaven. The staff is great and the selection is impeccable. You see an array of basic Instagram girls buying Tyler the creator records to weird college dj’s buying psychedelic Venezuelan music. 20/10 would reccomend.
Amazing record store and one of the biggest I have ever seen. They have just about every artist/band you can think of on a bunch of forms such as CD, Vinyl, Cassette, etc. Plus they have a load of DVDs, Blu-Rays, and even movie soundtracks. Will have to say that some prices may be a bit wonky..for example, I bought a copy of Blink-182s self titled album on vinyl there for about $35, then I went to Rasputin Records and saw the exact same vinyl for just about $30. However, you will still usually get great deals and the people in charge are so nice!
Every where you look is cool stuff. I could listen to what they play in the store all day ( most of the time). Support your record and CD shop before all that is left is iTunes.
Amoeba is still amazing! Huge selection of records, posters/artwork...even books & disney VHS tapes. This place has a lot of character & history that you can feel. Could easily spend hours looking through their selection.
Always fun to scan music and movies. Kinda retro I suppose. You get to handle and look.
Great selection and knowledgeable staff. My only complaint is the prices are much higher than local competitors and online.
Best music store around hands down. Wide selection of genres in all physical forms. Also has a solid selection of books, band shirts and audio players. A must see for audiophiles!
Good deals on cheap blue ray movies
The one that started it all is a shadow of its former self. The records are picked clean of any decent finds. Great for new releases and $1 joke records. For some reason they still have like a million CDs if thats your thing.
