Good place to study. Their waffles are good just a bit pricey for how much you get and a lot of their food kind of is. Its open late which makes it really good for studying late. Good coffee or hot chocolate if you arent a big coffee drinker. Parking can be an issue (thats not a criticism of their business but just be aware of it).
If you are vegan the number of breakfast options are not many, but the oatmeal was actually quite nice (note that they only serve it before 11am). They brought me soy milk instead of regular milk which was appreciated. I wish there were more options, but don’t skip out if your friends are going and you want to be there!! Service was friendly and efficient. Would recommend!
I really enjoyed my breakfast here. I had scoped it out the evening before as I was exploring downtown Berkeley. They have both a bakery, express part and a full service restaurant in the back. I sat in the back and enjoyed a latte, oatmeal, and toast ( I know, but I like it!). They had a varied and full breakfast menu. They also serve lunch and dinner.
Ive been coming to this place for many years but I notice my favorite meal, the tiger Burger combo, getting smaller and smaller. First they cut down the beef amount you were served and then the big French roll is now some kind of small stale bun, worst of all I think theyre not using high quality meat like they used to.The meat quality Might just my opinion but I can document the size loss all of their tiger Burger with photographs from the tiger burger you get now compared to the original tiger burger that you used to receive. (I have old photographs and you can probably find pictures on their menu of how it used to be, without them making it clear they dont make them like that anymore.)On the bright side the staff is still very nice. But if they want you to pay $$$Plus for a burger plate it should be a big burger and not this just slightly larger than normal hamburger Ive posted a picture of here.
Delightful, affordable eats in a very nice, new sidewalk gazebo, sheltered from passersby with big planters. He had fish and chips with a beer and some cheesecake, while I had some veggie chili and a hot licorice spice tea. We both came away happy. The sole employee was very nice to us.
I have been going to this great place for forty years. The atmosphere reminds me of my college hangout, and the food, beverages and pastries are wonderful.Service has always been excellent there.I always thought one could find something delicious, within one’s budget. So, why am I giving three stars? One of the unique qualities of this place is that it was the only restaurant, in the area, that was open late; the best option after an evening at the theater or the movies, as well as a delightful spot at any hour of the day.It seems that the (relatively) new owner is a tightwad, who closes early when the place isn’t crowded. Not only is this a disappointment for patrons, but employees cannot count on what their income will be.I think this is a very poor practice. If people cannot count on a fixed closing time, they might stop going there.
This spot is the one I like best. I eat in a lot of restaurants but to this place I constantly return again and again. The team is very professional and the food they offer is so fresh and tasty. I would always prefer to have a decent dinner in this restaurant. I highly recommend this place.
Berkeley classic. Decent coffee. Not the best cafe in town but it stays open very late (I think around 1-2am) and has been around for ages. Great for studying or getting some work done. A plus is that there are an abundance of electrical outlets available to charge your laptop.
This is one of the classic cafes in Berkeley. Its been around forever for all the best reasons. Excellent coffee great food kind staff. Dont expect the sheen of the ultra modern. Come here for classic excellence
Nice cafe! Been here a couple of times and have had the nachos, burger chocolate cake onion rings and garlic fries. Food is good. And portion size is pretty up there as well. Not usually crowded and a good ambience to enjoy a small meal.
This lovely little coffee shop with a restaurant in the back is the place I met my wife. We just went back there for our third anniversary for a delicious breakfast and latte. Even without sentimental attachment, I love this place.
Fantastic breakfast spot, very happy to come by every time i am berkeley. Love the big selection of breakfast pasteries
Picked up my sweetie from BART in Oakland late tonight and went here for dinner because it was the best option between Oakland and Pinole. Plus its open late. Had the evening special, a pasta dish, to which we added ground beef. That plus a soup and salad and we were full and happy. For late night dining in Berkeley or anywhere nearby, its a great choice.
The manager discriminated against me because of the way I looked she yelled at me as soon as me and my friend went in and where looking for a table to order food because I had a Starbucks coffee in my hand because we just came from there saying I cant have it in there while there where at least 6 other people there with drinks from other places who she said nothing too I asked why are you yelling at me when I first come in and calling me out about a drink when I come to order food she continued to yell at me about my drink I asked for the manager she said I am the manager I said what is your bosses name and number and what is your name and she walked away from me after I started talking to the nice man working at coffee part of the cafe and said she was clearly discriminating against me she told him to go tell everyone else no outside drinks after I threatened a lawsuit this pic is of the lady who discriminated against me
Lovely, colorful staple of the Berkeley community! The food is great but a touch expensive for my student budget. Its my favorite place to study, since its open till 1:30 and has a relatively large amount of outlets.
It has a certain quality that is unmatched, and the energy there is always just the pace your looking for. Good food and free WiFi is my kind of a party any day. 😎•VII~SEVEN•
I remembered this cafe fondly from when my sister was a student at UC but this time I discovered that the food here is greasy, tasteless, poorly presented and overpriced for what it is. I had $13.95 Eggs and Breakfast Meat, a pricy breakfast to me. My ham was way too salty and the potatoes were soggy, covered with huge chunks of uncut onions and fried with too much oil. On the presentation side, my meal looked like someone barfed into my plate. My kid had $9.95 Waffles, which looked dry and unappetizing. We won’t be back.
The cafe feels like a pretty standard issue cafe. The restaurant in the back is great. The vibe of the place is very Midwestern diner, and the food is pretty consistent and tasty. The lighting in the restaurant is very cold and a little bit too bright for the space. This could be a negative, but instead it leads to an airy feeling as one eats their brunch. It feels like one is in a spotlight, but everyone is in a spotlight. The effect is small enough that its maybe not noticeable in the first few minutes of sitting, but it grows. Great place!
Great place for coffee or tea. Great service. Good atmosphere for chit chatting.
Our place to go for lunch when attending Berkeley Repatoury Theater. Recommend the clam chowder, vegetarian chili and green salad with a scoop of chicken salad on top.Prices are good though we noticed a slight hike in pricing. A variety of choices so something for everyone. Service is spotty butnot rude. All in all we always seem to return.
Would definitely recommend visiting this place. Great atmosphere, delicious food, good service. Fantastic work.
The coffee was pretty good, service was great and the food was amazing. Place had a very nice feel too it and would recommend to anyone in the Berkeley area.
Rarely think of this place but stopped in for take out and a latte. Tuna melt was just perfect. Chicken salad sandwich on wheat was also tasty - super fresh, great flavor. So much food in those 2 items and fixings that we have to save the Cobb salad for dinner. The slice of lemon cake was ... Im trying to make this brief ... Yummy beyond expectations. As in Crixa or Masses yummy but for $4 not $6. Sole disappointment was the latte, which I was ready to ditch after first sip. Wondered if it was made on the pretty espresso machine or came out of a regular dripper. Staff were on point and masked. However, I wish I didnt have to handle the menu, since there was no bottle of sanitizer around. Relieved I had a bottle in the car. On the whole I would highly recommend this place: good value, great plates of entirely satisfying food. Coquelet has been on that corner so long, now I know why.
I love this place! Favorite diner in all of East Bay. Brick, wood, and candelabra decor. Full hearty meals, and friendly service. Highly recommend.
It gives off a home like atmosphere. Their mochas are really good and the food next door was not bad at all! The only reason it does not get 5 stars is that it is incredibly busy. The building usually has around 30 to 40 in there always. So in other words, it is a fantastic place to study, if you can get a seat.
We have met my brother here once a month for lunch, always on a Sunday, for 7 years now. The food is good, not exceptional but good enough. The service is good, kind people who take care of their customers. There is free wifi, a coffee/computer section at the front, separate from the restaurant area where we meet. The place is always packed and yet they have a nice rhythm, moving diners in and out without rushing anyone. We typically spend 2 plus hours there and they have never indicated that we need to leave, even after we have paid our bill and we are still there listening to my brothers current research. One time we left without paying our bill, an honest mistake with one person thinking the other paid. We called as soon as we got home, 2.5 hours later, explained the situation. They knew us, accepted our apologizes and we paid them. When we arrived the next month, we were welcomed as always. Pretty cool in my mind.I hear the veggie chili is good and the soups are good. The salads are good, the sandwiches huge and fresh. Breakfast is served all day and the food passing by looks good. Not sure what else to say other than this is like your community hangout on the corner and it is a welcoming place to be, to dine, to gather and share.
Once of the few spots in Berkeley that is open late.1/2 the restaurant is a cafe thats good for working on a laptop (has plugs). The other half is a restaurant that doesnt have outlets.
This is a cafe AND a restaurant connected through a short corridor. Separate menus but customers are free to eat in the cafe or study in the restaurant area too. They always have good deals on food and happy hour usually runs 4-7pm.
Some of the best burgers I have had are from here. And they have great prices, too. The bacon cheeseburger is really good. My favorite though is he British burger. These guys also have a tea and coffee section, which is kind of weird because it feels like two restaurants in one but it’s not a bad thing. Staff here is usually really friendly. They are also quick with making the burgers.
$14 BLTYou get about 4 slices of bacon that taste pretty good, on rye bread, single slice of lettuce, and a few thin slices of tomatoes$14Not really sure why its that expensive. It was tasty for sure, but $14 tasty for that little amount?
Pretty good! We came here with 5 people total and had no problem getting a table. The food was really good, but I ordered a salmon burger and we think it was just a patty from Costco.. lol. Still everything was delicious and we highly recommend the chopped salad! Huge with great ingredients and my mom loved it.
Mainstay of the east bay academic and pre-hipster crowd, this places have served students working on papers, as well as served at the go-to meeting place for local business people.Under the astute management of manager Paul, a local for decades, the kitchen and cafe, have seen a dramatic rise in quality and great tasting dishes. They were fine before, just a little ordinary. Now theyre something special. Try the Lemon Shrimp pasta of you dare., but say goodbye to any dieting resolutions you might have had. Delicious.
Au Coquelet is really the only spot for a sit down meal late at night in Berkeley. Fortunately, the menu is burgers, salads, and hot and cold sandwiches is actually quite good. An reasonable beer and wine selection along with a complete coffee bar and Italian sodas tops it off. Great to get something to eat with friends after a play, rehearsal, or concert, or just come sit with all the other late night writers and thinkers and make progress on your masterpiece.
Its honestly one of my favorite places in Berkeley to work on my laptop. Its partially a coffee shop and partially a restaurant (the place is split into two halves). Its right on University Avenue, near Shattuck. Thus, its a good spot to meet up with people for a work date of sorts.
A collection of great spaces in the middle of downtown. Good for meetings. Coffee, omelets, and other tasty foods.
As a coffee shop it is not good. The coffee was tepid in temperature and taste. The fresh fruit options consisted primarily of past prime bananas. Hot coffee should not be served room temperature. Not a one star review because it does more than breakfast and this review addresses only breakfast.
This is a Berkeley classic that has lost some of its luster from its hay days but is still a reliable late night haunt with a coffeehouse up front and light dining in backI was a little disappointed that they installed a tv in front.Tables are plentiful and it has a great window looking out onto University AveAmazing selection of pastries, good coffee, no attitude
Great place for coffee a place where you can use a wall outlet to charge a cellphone or pc with any perches of. Coffee. Drink or food it
Id say the best late night cafe. This is the only good place I could find to get hot tea at midnight. The outside is a bit sketchy at night so try not to hold your phone outside so you dont get mugged, but thats with anywhere during late nights.
This is one of the last mom and pop restaurants left in Berkeley. Its a perfect breakfast spot and the perfect pace for lazy weekends.
Coffee/Restaurant very nice place to get your breakfast and latte. Great for reading and studying especialy during the weekend, Open late.
So this place has been around since last century. I was in the area and decided to pop in for nostalgias sake. In many ways it looks like it did 30 years ago, but its received technological updates that make it a good place to plug in over a coffee. I would have rated them 4 stars if my seemingly fresh apple pastry didnt have a bite that tasted moldy. I didnt finish it.Seating was accessible including armless chairs, drinks were decent. The cafe portion closes to transition into dinner restaurant in the evening. Parking is challenging so its best for folks already in the area or using non auto transport.
Looking for breakfast on University Ave. I tried Au Coquelet. Feels dank & small when you first walk in, but in the back is a spacious restaurant with great steak & eggs. I cant wait to go back.
Extremely friendly, excellent service. Tasty food, comfortable casual atmosphere. A common gathering place for the arts, theater, and music crowds, but theres also a tabletop gaming group that meets there and a significant amount of foot traffic.
I like that theyre open late, but otherwise, I feel everything Ive had here was better somewhere else. Good spot for hanging out late at night with friends, if you want food. It does seem to be a popular late night study spot.If its late and youre just looking to chill, or have food to bring, check out the Albatross for a more fun vibe.
Its spacious, and they let you put smaller tables together, so its good for groups. However, they do not have much variety for all diets. They should have more than just a salad for vegan options. This is Berkeley -- people usually expect more.
Good chain tea, outlets for laptops laid back environment the torte was also quite tasty. Only 4/5 because there werent many tea options on the menu, not a coffee guy myself but I have been told the coffee is good. Late hours to!
Awesome! Big portions, tasty home cooking style food.
The best pastries and coffee! Fun ambiance in the heart of downtown Berkeley
Nice laid-back atmosphere, good for coffee or dinner. I liked the fish & chips. It looked roomy, uncrowded and quiet despite there being plenty of business.
To me this is a special place. Why? For there is nothing like it anywhere near this area, that has a consistently high quality menu, in particular the evening specials, and a polite, hard working and attentive staff. Combine these qualities with their early morning to late night hours of service and you may come to appreciate it as much as I do.
Lots of outlets, open til super late, properly mixed Italian sodas, always busy but never crowded, bustling but never noisy. Chai is great, all prices very reasonable. A nice, refreshing island in a sea of Berkeley cafes.
Horrendous service. The food was decent, however the waiter was very unaccommodating. In the 90 minutes spent there, we did not receive a single check-in to ask about the food or obtain a water refill. It would be understandable if the restaurant was busy, but it wasnt even at half capacity when this happened. The staff at the counter in addition to on the floor felt very apathetic - it was remarkably difficult to even get their attention. When I finally did, it seemed that they were displeased that they had to help me. The meal was a bit messy and forced me to get up to the counter and manually obtain napkins this way after waiting 10 minutes for a waiter to stop by. The same thing happened for the water refills. I also had to go collect the bill for the table manually since I never saw the waiter again after he served our food. This is a wonderful place to stay if you enjoy getting up frequently from your table to do even the most basic and fundamental tasks that a teenage waiter out of high school should be competent enough to do. If you like being ignored and treated like a nuisance when you ask for things, please stop by Au Coquelet for a great time.
Can’t go wrong with this place. Great selection of coffee, beverages, baked goods and friendly staff. What more can you ask for!!
Great quality and variety of food! Great cocktails and Italian sodas. Amazing desserts! Open later than most other cafes for students to study at with WiFi and outlets on one side and lots of nature and natural daylight on the other
This is a versatile and pleasant place. I have had coffee and a croissant, and a full breakfast here. The coffee is good and I have been there a few times and will be back more times.
They serve a lot of food, but they are decent in quality. The french and onion soup was very watery (subpar). It is a great place to sit down for a while and work under the sunroof. It feels like a small tropical forest inside in the restaurant section.
Great service. I appreciate the pastries and bar and love their Italian sodas! Im looking forward to going to their brunch soon!! They serve that until 3pm.
Good food, cozy atmosphere, great for getting work done.
Friendly and welcoming staff. Good American diner fare but not a greasy spoon. Good coffee.
Quick service freindly atmosphere. Good size sandwich and fries. Good selection of tea.
Au Coquelet (French for The Chicken ) is a cafe with a dedicated customer base that stays there for the quiet ambiance in the coffee area. The dining area in the back is fairly spacious and food selection and quality is superb.Photo shared:Reuben with a side of garlic fries and a dill pickle
Good quiche, but they were microwaveable. I was almost tempted to ask, Who was the producer of the quiche. Also take note that quiches are prepare ahead of time, so you can add or take off ingredients.
Not exactly stunned by this place. The service is alright (no complaints) but the interior is a little dingy and it seems to be a place for drifters/randos to hang out for hours on end. There are a good number of outlets, but its not exactly a comfortable place.
Expansive bakery and restaurant combo. Good coffee. Reasonably good service at a fair price.
Great service with large groups welcoming and inviting they dont use pronouns
Unique place with great food, chicken salad on sourdough is homemade and delicious. College crowd, artists, couples, a very well dressed older gentleman (whos that guy?}, an LGBT brunch, parents taking kids out for after dropping them off for college.... really, everyone. Quiet and wow, they serve drinks with a full bar! But mind you, nobody is having a frat party, everyone is happy to be in this old school outdoor/indoor brightly lit decor.. Great place to work on laptop or dinner with friends. Or maybe write a poem or with your ear plugs, practice a new guitar riff. Is that some writer sitting there? and HOW friendly and sometimes introverted the staff is. I want to hesitate now to make sure too many people dont find this place... dont miss the huge cork board on your way out with tons of local music/art/activist/dog sitting services.
The food in this restaurant is not worth anyones money. The burger that I attempted to eat had a strange flavor in the meat and the quiche was a mess. The nachos made me sick. It was also incredibly over-priced. The whole model of the business seems very incongruent. They are selling cheap, low quality food at fine dining prices. Although my stomach and taste buds are regularly offended by the food that I have consumed in this place, it does seem like a fine place to study and have some drinks. But Beware of the out-dated menu. Beware!
A spacious and stylish coffee shop and restaurant and bar and... Great opening hours. I ordered a veggie omelet for the breakfast, and it was a plenty but delicious. My friend got a muffin, which was tasty and nutty. There are many power outlets and a solid wifi. No loud music playing. The bathroom was large but not very clean. Finally, I didnt like the atmosphere very much, the coffee shop lacked a coherent outlook. For instance, there is a large TV screen in the coffee shop section. They serve coffee shop fare but then also a bar fare. The seating was comfortable but not cozy. The neons at the outside signaled a cheap feeling.
Wide, wide variety of items at this cafe. Worth going in either for a quick cup of coffee or tea, or sitting down to a yummy lunch. So far all the experiences have been great.
Great place to : 1) get a late night snack, 2) set up your laptop and camp out for a few hours, 3) have a cheap first date, etc. The food is generally very good, the prices are reasonable, the menu selections are extensive, the desserts are fabulous, and the surroundings are clean and comfortable. Add free Wi-Fi and open til 2am, and whats not to love?
Pretty good food. Open when you need it to be. And decent service
Decent place - with all American menu for breakfast and lunch. Food is quite decent, and service is adequate, but not great
I just bought two mochas, and although i saw them being made in front of me it litteraly just tastes like flavored milk. Tastes like no espresso and doesnt even pass as hot chocolate either. Each visits gets worse, and after this visit I dont plan on coming back anymore. Not worth it.
Great cafe to study at because its one of the few places open late in Berkeley. Food is meh but the garlic fries are good
Open late, especially for West side. Good food-fish and chips, drinks, burgers are all decent. Their cake slices arent bad as well.
I honestly don’t know how the food is because I didn’t end up eating it but the prices they advertise online are incorrect. Please change and don’t mislead customers!
Great place to study and do group work. Also they are open late (1:30am I believe) and breakfast is served all day. Lots of food and drink options as well. I recommend the Reuben and the French Toast Special.
This place is adorable. Comfortable atmosphere, tasty food and helpful service. Ill be back.
I wish I could give this place only half a star. The food is mediocre at best. However, the thing that gets me going is the people that go there. For some reason, there seem to be the same people that go there every single day. Like they have no lives or something. Theres a dude whos always in there with his laptop, and he brings his mouse and all that, and he just surfs the web and does Lord knows what for hours on end. Then theres a couple that shows up pretty often, and all they do is stare at people together. Then theres an old guy that goes in there and PRETENDS to read, and is just looking around, flipping pages and catching glimpses of women walking by him. Oh, and it gets better. Theres like a white man in white robes who randomly comes about starts having panic attacks and seizures all over the floor. If I wanted to be surrounded by clowns, I would just go to a circus instead of this.
Nice place to sit, chat and be. Food is tasty.
Wow ! What can I say ? A lot. Thats what I can say. Au Coquelet has been a favorite of mine for now over 29 years. With thier delectable pastries, exquisite esppreso beverages, and satiable menu food selections all provided in a wide roomy pleasing artistic and comfortable atmosphere one cant go wrong in looking for either a nice place to have a meal with one or more or get some work done in a positively coducive work environment. A new addition is the provision of a wide screen tv to catch up on the latest happenings. Prices here are a little high but definitely worth it. If you happen to choose this locale on your journey I highly recommend their Avocado and cheese sandwich. If not they have a plethora of other hot and cold items to choose from. Au Coquelet is near public transportation not too far from Berkeley bart perhaps a 10 minute walk and parking can be a challenge. Finally did I tell you the best part ? No not yet. Theyre open for business up until 1:30 am when other places are closed and not available. Au Coquelet is one of the best things about Berkeley and a visit would definitely be a wecomed one. Cheers !
This is a great place for coffee, watching tge game, a drink, sitting at your laptop or a full, sit down meal
Their food for breakfast it is not the best
Excellent organic roast coffee out of espresso machine, and great plain croissants. The restaurant food is OK, not great. good atmosphere, great location.
Despite their lack of good coffee and a stable wifi, Au Coquelet has the right ambience to set your head down and get your work done. One of the few east bay haunts that remains open into the early hours and still serves hot plates.
Tasty pastries, good coffee, and pleasant atmosphere to relax with a friend or plug your laptop in and do some work. Usually easy to find a place to sit. Usually quiet, with some light chatting. They have a variety of light food, like quiche.Wi-Fi name and password are identical.
My go-to place for a late night sandwich. Theres always a crowd here for late night study / homework. Decent diner food that will get you fed.
Met long time friend for breakfast. Good food, nice atmosphere for conversation.
The egg salad had a good texture, but was bland
Good food. Good drinks. And its relaxing.
Good food coffee and atmosphere. Has free wifi. Usually a great place to get work done.
Good food. Not fine dining, but a good place to go out with friends. Cafe in front is really good.
