Great team. Easily available ready to answer any questions you may have. The steering gear was purchased for my 2001 Ford Excursion that had really loose steering. People were afraid to drive the truck.Well Red Heads gear comes in and I have it installed by my local mechanic. I hop behind the wheel and take a spin and WOW!!!! The steering is so tight and compliant now. Steering wheel play is practically gone.Amazing team. Great to work with. I will send anyone here that is having steering problems in their trucks. I am so happy!! Finally after 3 attempts by other rebuild manufactures, Redhead has fixed my sloppy steering problem. The other 3 gear boxes I went through in the past 8 yrs have all failed and starting leaking soon after they were installed out of a side plate. I am so glad I found this company. Wish I would have found them sooner is my only regret. These guys are definitely worth any added expense. They obviously have a passion for doing outstanding work!!

I spent hours searching through posts trying to find a quality gear box for a 91 Jeep Wrangler. All I could find were recommendations of what not to buy. I was surprised to see several positive remarks about Red Head Gearboxs. I decided to buy one and was amazed at the difference it made. I had to learn to drive my Jeep all over again. I would recommend this product if your old gearbox is worn out and has a lot of play in it.

Top Notch! My old steering had gotten sloppy, with about 4 inches of play. After replacing (all were bad): all ball joints, tie rod ends, Pittman and idler arms and the intermediate steering shaft (bad rag joint) the play improved to 3 inches- all of it in the steering gear. So- First I replaced it with a cheap reman unit, and it was just as sloppy as the old one. Then I bought a brand new unit from Lares steering. That box was really stiff to steer (not fun to drive), and still had 2.5 inches of play. Then I found REDHEAD! I popped the redhead re-man unit in and my old 97 k2500 drives as smooth, tight, and care-free as my wife’s brand new suburban! There is 0 play, and the steering is smooth and effortless. I love driving my old truck again! Thanks RedHead, you guys are the best! To anyone replacing their steering gear, I would not bother with anything else. Redhead gear and you’re done. It’s well worth it!

The steering on my 1999 Ford F250 Superduty FX4 7.3 diesel steadily got more and more sloppy/loose. After researching all of the options and talking to friends and local mechanics, I decided to pay a little more and purchase a RedHead Steering gear box. I called the shop and after having some questions answered, I took the plunge. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I pulled the old unit out and compared them side by side. The fit and finish on the Redhead was head and shoulders above the stock unit. I installed the new unit and followed the bleeding procedure. After centering the steering wheel I hit the road. Wow, it was like driving a new vehicle - no play in the steering whatsoever. Two weeks later I drove to Wyoming on a hunting trip. After thousands of highway miles and some pretty nasty dirt roads and 4wd trails, the steering is still tight. This is one of the best decisions I had made in the care and modification of my truck. I recommend them to everyone I know looking for a steering box. Great product from a great company!

Im somewhat local, so I picked up the new and returned my core in person. The office staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the production guy I talked to was happy to answer a couple of questions. The new box looked well built and had no initial slop or other problems, and completely transformed my trucks handling. Ive waited almost 1.5 years to review in case any problems came up, and there have been none. Its just as crisp as the day I installed it, and it has no trouble with the higher hydraulic pressure from my upgraded steering pump.

Purchased the HD box for my 98 Dodge diesel(18:1 ratio) and works flawlessly.I had wasted my money on a factory remanufactured box from Napa last year and started leaking out of the top cap after a month and developed play even with the BD steering support. The factory boxes just cant hold up under the diesel weight. You do need to use the recommended Chrysler powersteering fluid, using automatic transmission fluid is said to destroy the seals even in the factory application.Tip: ship your core back in a flat rate box through the Post Office. This will only cost about $20-$25 in shipping as long as you are in the U.S.Other companies will have additional cost due to the weight

Like many, I had less than great experiences with local shops for rebuilt units in the past and was willing to spend the money for a better unit with a good reputation. I got the gear, followed the instructions and so far I like it; its tight and the trucks seems to steer better. The reason Im only giving them 1 star is because of the customer service and core return experience.I had installed an aftermarket steering shaft on my old box and had to file a small flat into some of the input shaft splines which is required by the steering shaft company for installation. As a result, Red Head only refunded me $125 of the $225 core. I emailed them to explain that I understood why I didnt receive a full refund but questioned where the the $100 deduction came from. I asked them to consider splitting the difference with me.Steve emailed me back stating that I should find a junkyard that had a similar box, ship it to them and they would probably be able to refund 100% of my core. I told him that I had no desire to jump through hoops to retain a full refund. I would have been fine with a reasonable deduction in the $50 range but $100 was too much and unjustifiable. Any shop that exclusively remanufactures one type of product, has parts on hand and pays minimal rates for parts they dont have because they buy frequently and in bulk.I told Steve that since he was unwilling to find a common ground with me, that this would be my last Read Head product. I also suggested that he do a better job providing clear and concise terms for their core return policy. Steves response to my second email was got it, thanks. Great business man.I take no pleasure in leaving negative comments about any business, but when customers are treated poorly and not taken seriously, that business deserves any negative press they get.I cant knock their products but their customer service is poor to say the least. If you plan to buy one of their boxes and have any damage whatsoever on your current box, I would call them to find out how much of your core refund they plan to withhold.

The first Redhead steering gear I bought started leaking after eight months. The replacement unit (warranty) had terrible slop and would not return to center after a right turn. The third box wont return to center after a left OR right turn. Two different auto shops confirmed nothing was wrong with my suspension or alignment.I am out the labor, shipping, and after showing up in person the time and gas.I considered not to bother with Redhead again, and went on to immediately void their warranty on the third box. I adjusted the third box myself and it has been working fine for over a year now.I guess it may be hit or miss here.

Bought a steering rack online, not a gear box, from these guys and 2 months later the seal blows out and all the fluid leaks out immediately. Changed the rack out with one locally and it worked great. Sent the bad one to Red Head. They sent the Rack to another company, where they originally bought it from, and had it tested before they would refund me. After over three weeks of calling Steve everyday he finally calls me back and says my pump was burnt and that is what destroyed the seal. My pump was not burnt. Actually it was brand new. Never did I have any discoloration or noises from the pump. It had brand new fluid too when it went out. They paid me out the refund but of course all of the shipping charges was on me. Not putting down their Gear Boxes but if you plan on buying a steering rack for a Dodge Dakota, dont go here.! They dont even work on them. They get it from some flimsy shop that is a friend of theirs.

The Steering box came and was installed. There is a small amount of play in box and contacting the company, I got run around and all kinds of excuses. Whatever was wrong had to be my truck in their eyes. This is a company that does NOT stand behind their work, poor communication, (took two days to return phone call and wont respond to emails, 5 days since last communication) and will not offer any assistance with the problem. I simply asked to make the small adjustment to fix the slop and was denied due to warranty. They do not provide O-rings to do the job. They state, O-rings come with power steering hoses and therefore, not their responsibility. So, if your dumb enough to buy from this company anyway, have a pocket full of O-rings and pray you get a good box. Otherwise, find someone else. And, still have not received core deposit return.

Red-Head might make great steering gears, but I dont recommend having them rebuild a power steering pump. My mechanic ordered one through a local parts house, they picked Red-Head to rebuild my pump because thet didnt have a core to rebuild. It cost me four (4) times what an A1 Cardone would have even with my mechanic selling it to me at his cost. I dont think the local parts house was the problem as weve bought a lot of parts there at what have always been reasonable prices. The Red-Head is guaranteed for life, but I could buy four of another brand for the price of a Red-Head.

After doing a lot, and I mean a lot, of research I was set on a PSC unit until I came across a forum talking about Red-Heads. Ive never heard of them before but everyone talked very highly about them. I emailed Red-Head inquiring about their stock for my TJ, Harvey emailed me back within hours and told me their price. I changed my mind about the PSC unit as it was ~$100+ more and I thought Id give Red-Head a shot. They shipped my unit out the same day and got to me, in Missouri, in 2 days! Upon arrival I was in awe of how well it looked, but looks arent everything. I installed the steering box in about 2 hours and then bled the system as instructed. 2005 F250 Super Crew 5.4L 4x4 automatic (steering gear)Time line ___ March 31, 2016 through June 10, 2016:My local Ford mechanic diagnosed my steering issues as a failing gear. They gave me a couple of recommendations for sourcing a replacement. RedHead was my choice. After a complete system drain & flush, the new gear was installed, as was a new power steering pump. The RedHead Bleeding instructions were followed. Upon the test drive an oscillation developed. With the truck running while in PARK, the steering wheel would oscillate on its own. The mechanic then called and spoke directly with RedHead and was told that it was likely trapped air and that the vehicle needed to be driven for up to possibly 3 weeks. The bill for this work was $401.32 and included labor, pump, and fluid. This issue never resolved itself, and a warranty gear was sent 2 weeks later. The system was drained, flushed and filled. The bleeding instructions provided by RedHead Steering Gears were followed to the letter and completed 3x’s prior to ever starting the engine. At the same time I had the alignment and entire front end checked out with no issues found and the alignment to be well within specs. Ten days later the same oscillation returned. I was able to video it and after Steve Foster reviewed the video; He commented via e-mail “this is a crazy one”, and he promptly wanted to send me a 3rd steering gear. I hesitated on this offer because I was 2 for 2, and now had a big lack in confidence in RedHead’s product. We agreed to let me think about it for a day, and I called back and said that I would try their gear a 3rd time.I had another new power steering pump installed, system flushed, drained, and bled per RedHeads instructions. This gear seemed to perform well for the next 2 1/2 weeks approximately. Then while driving on a 2 Lane county road at the posted 65mph, without warning my truck started to pull to the left. I corrected for the left hand pull and thought this was odd with a tailwind. Then without any warning the left hand pull was gone, and instead the truck immediately steered into my correction to the right. I departed the road into the right ditch. I was able to stop the right steer and started to ease back onto the road when the steering wheel oscillated to the left sharply. The wheel literally spun through my grip. I crossed the oncoming lane and entered the left hand ditch. I was able to get back onto the road without damage and pulled over at the next dirt road intersection. I inspected the steering fluid level and it was normal. Inspected all of the linkage, attach points, steering gear mounting bolts and all associated front end components with No anomalies found. At this point (while on the side of the road) I called and spoke with RedHead. At the end of our conversation, I concluded that I would be sending this gear back to RedHead for a 100% refund. Through all of our conversations and troubleshooting RedHead could not find any fault in the steps taken above to ensure a clean and properly bled system. I was informed that the very first gear I ordered had a bad control head (valve assembly)I ordered a gear from NAPA and had it installed. During the swap the system was drained and the reservoir screen was found covered in debris. We were able to remove it. Inspection of the RedHead steering gear lead to the finding of dried black paint inside of the gear ports and threads. After all of the research and reading through RedHead’s website on the effort put into quality control, fit, and finish of its product it was maddening to find the paint where we did. In the end my money was returned, however Im out well over $600 in shop labor for installations along with fluid, power steering pumps, and lots of time.Ive read all the positive reviews, and positive forum posts. My experience was anything but positive. I tried to find fault in our installation process while working with RedHead and they couldnt come up with a single mistake on our end.

I have had my 77 F150 4x4 since 1986 and it was a 35,000 mile truck when purchased but the tie rod ends were sloppy. It is 4X4 and had the inverted Y steering. I swapped out everything from and including pittman arm to both tie rod ends totally to update to 78-79 style. The elimination of toe changes with every dip, rise, bump, etc greatly improved the steering then, but she still never had a tight feel. In the early years it wasnt so bad as all my cars and my police car also had recirculating ball steering .... but with time and wear and etc .... and the advent of more rack and pinion steering on other vehicles, I almost stopped driving the 77.It just wasnt fun to drive as once she was.In the 2012 I replaced the drag link again also as it had worn some at the pittman arm (ball joints are tight still at 102K as are the tie rods ends installed in 1986). I had played with the steering adjustment to no avail and returned it to stock setting.I had read of these Red Head Steering boxes and for several years considered one. Thinking Id sell it, I put it off ...... then decided I wasnt gonna give it away, so ..... on Dec 3rd 2012 I ordered a Red Head Steering PS box and it showed up in Va in my driveway Dec 5th and I installed it Dec 7th. After a few days, I sent the old box back west via if it fits it ships 12x12x6 box .... and on the 17th my credit card was credited with the core charge. Fast and painless service is what I call it.WOW .... my old 77 had NEVER driven this good. Its like a new old truck. I actually enjoy driving it now. The addition of a more modern sized 14.5 steering wheel was icing on the cake. I should have done it years ago. Now, shes up over 105,000 and she drives super, I love what this box did for her!
