Enjoyed our breakfast and coffee here. Friendly folks and good fast service. Also has free parking which is a plus.
I’m giving this place 3 star not because of the coffee or food..The coffee, food, and venue are great, as well as good service. I am giving this a lower rating because of the many times I have tried to come and they have not been open. It is stated that they open at 8am but sometimes they open late which sometimes messing with my coffee plans for the short work breaks I have. They have also shortened their hours to 2pm which is super early.
I came in about a week ago, but am just now getting around to my review. I came in with about a half a dozen of my friends snack we all tried something different from the brunch menu. Some of the things we ordered were, but were not limited to: Maryland Chicken with bacon wrapped plantains, steak, and eggs, sticky bun French Toast, watermelon salad, the Norwegian, eggs benedict and avocado toast. For drinks, we got mimosas, sangria, Gaviota, and kill bill tea. Not only was everything extremely good, but the presentations are also amazing. The restaurant itself is clean, well taken care and has a wonderful aesthetic. The service was just as good as the food. I speak for myself and my group in that we all look forward to coming back soon. Keep up the great work Detour!!
Good food. Good coffee. Atmosphere is nice.Definitely needs to be open more. Its hard to visit due to their limited hours.
Biked over for a late breakfast and was very pleased. The food and coffee were delicious and nicely presented (just what we needed!), and portion sizes were large for the price. Will be back!
First time here and it’s already in list of favorites. Excellent food and service.
Great Shop. Menu, Environment, Staff, Coffee - they cover it all - stop by.
Nice place for a breakfast that will make you feel stuffed and happy for the rest of the day 😊Saturday morning was busy for the place, but I was lucky to get my corner table next to the window (Please clean your windows, because I couldn’t see outside sitting handsome guy 🧐).Thanks to stuff, friendly guy from Columbia and senior silent barista, who made delicious cappuccino!
Decent coffee. They were out of almost every syrup we requested, but okay. Cool atmosphere, willing to try again and sit inside or outside to work.Edit: maybe it wasn’t syrups, but whatever flavoring/coffee type/etc. I don’t remember what we ordered, but my partner and I had to change our orders due to out of stock items, which was sad. Would love to come back and try again.
10/10 would definitely recommend for meetups or studying! This coffee shop is now one of my favoritesPlenty of seating and quite comfortable - booths, high tables, sofa chairs. Very easy to find a spot with an outletMany power outlets, conveniently locatedQuick service (for coffee; I didn’t order food but the menu looked good)Good WiFi, no password requiredHas a mini parking lotComfortable temperature!! I was wearing shorts and a tank top and didn’t need a jacketStudied in peace for a loooong time without being asked to leave, which was really nice of them :)
One of the best breakfast burritos I have had in a long time. It was perfectly seasoned. The barista also introduced me to the siphon method of brewing which is quite a neat process to watch and the coffee was delicious.
Loved this place but it closes early
Love the food at this place....not thrilled with service. Been here 4 times and 3 out of the 4 felt like I was an inconvenience to the person behind the counter. He had a big order to carry to table but my gosh! Oh...and my glass was chipped and sharp. Side note...he acted the same to everyone so it wasn’t just me. He did make a KILLER latte so he needs to stay...just maybe not interact with customers?
Positively perfect coffee. Worth the 10 mile drive for me. But just a heads up, Arlington folks are not careful drivers.
A very quaint coffee shop with some unique design elements! I had a macchiato which was different from one you might get at Starbucks or DD, as it was made the “real” way: a shot of espresso with just a bit of foamed milk on top. Overall, a very nice experience with friendly staff! Will definitely return to try more drinks.
Coffee tasted super good, I just wish there was space for outdoor seating during COVID. Would totally come for their happy hour!
Cool setting, very laid back and comfortable
One of the best coffee shops in Arlington. Great food, great coffee, service is excellent and place is always clean.
Went there about a week ago around 8 am. When I walked in I immediately noticed the pleasant ambience and decor. I began to get my hopes up about this place but was soon disappointed with the barista. While I selected my choice of coffee, he mentioned that he’ll take my order and then he’d “go get something from his vehicle” which was odd for conversation, or perhaps it was intended to rush me. When he returned, I noticed his mask was off while behind the counter. I looked towards the kitchen and noticed the female staff was also not wearing a mask. Later, I went to the restroom, and it was not in adequate clean conditions. The baked goods display also did not look appealing as the glass was covered in frost.I still think the aesthetics of this coffee shop are very unique and pleasing. I just thought it was a shame that a coffee shop this nice could not provide a great experience.
Great food and service
Coffee, food and service is excellent. Its big, yet cozy inside with different places to sit and work or chat. They have an eclectic variety of food and drinks that makes me want to come back and try more than just the good coffee. Friendly and helpful Baristas to boot!
Absolutely delicious from coffee to food to pastry. I hadnt heard of this place until my friend invited me there for coffee and some bites. So glad she did. It was SO yummy!!! I would highly recommend it!
I would say this is the most interesting and personally my favorite coffee shop in the Arlington area
Wow, I would have totally missed this place if I hadnt found it on Google Maps. It is almost invisible under the Darna lounge. Once I got in there was a nice crowd, and I got a nice coffee with good service. Very nice ambiance as well. I look forward to going back for a breakfast with friends.
A great hidden gem (though surely wont be hidden much longer). Really good food options. Can sometimes take a bit longer to get food, so wouldnt recommend it if in a real hurry, but the food is worth the wait if you have the time.
Coffee and breakfast sandwiches were delicious
Great atmosphere! Good coffee. Great spot to sit down get work done on laptop. Multiple outlets to plug in as well. Comfy seats. Free Wifi as well. Recommend this spot for sure!
Super cute and cozy coffee shop/ cafe with very ample lighting and seating! I’ll come here to do work when I’m in the Clarendon area. The Nutella crescente pastry is also a must-try.
These guys do a GREAT job! The coffee is always on point and they have great locally made pastries brought in fresh daily. Their lunch menu is pretty amazing too! Definitely recommend!
The coffee is alright; I didn’t try the food!
Great coffee, great staff. The only problem is finding it (it looks like a hole in the wall from the street). If I lived nearby, this would be my home away from home. Its also surrounded by auto repair shops and its a great place to wait for your car (which is what Im doing).
Disclaimer: I did not go here for coffee. I went here for a breakfast sandwich at 10:30am on a Saturday. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. I expected the order to take a few minutes however it took 25 minutes to receive my sandwich. Once I finally got my sandwich, it was decent. I wish the bagel was toasted more or had less butter because the bread was floppy.
Ran past this spot on a daily basis without noticing that it had become a coffee/breakfast & lunch casual menu entry, so I stopped off: so glad I did, thanks to top-notch baristas using excellent locally roasted coffee blends, as well as delicious baked goods, alongside some healthy options among the sandwich listings. Now I just bend my regular route to include a drop-in on a more regular basis. Nice vibe, thoughtful staff, and quality fare on offer add up to a place worthy of any detour -- take one today, you wont regret it, I promise.
Needed more servers and skip the breakfast pizza! My wife and I swung by for breakfast/brunch this morning. Things looked busy and good, but took a turn for the worse when after ordering the manager/owner said, lets hope your food comes out in 20 minutes. 35-38 minutes later it did....ugh!The chicken and waffles were great and its amazing that they got the chicken inside the waffles. The breakfast pizza was pretty much just cheese pizza with potatoes....no eggs or breakfast meat (sausage/bacon)....just a lot of cheese and a few potatoes.Meanwhile, we sat at the communal table, next to the previous diners uneaten food that sat for at least 45 minutes before I finally got up and took care of it myself. It just seemed like they needed one more person working to take care of things as the barista was too busy making drinks to bring out food or too busy taking out food to make drinks.Poor service and 1 of 2 dishes were good.
Best coffee shop in Arlington and one of the best in the entire DC Metro. Its comfortable, has great food options, and an excellent staff. Its a little inconspicuous but dont be deterred. If a nearby spot is swamped with people, swing by Detour.
Oh my! Come hungry, leave stuffed! Great coffee and chill atmosphere. Great food and drink selection. Still thinking about the Norwegian sandwich...
The best chai tea latte anywhere.Detour Coffee Co. In the tradition of old coffee houses where coffee is great; chai tea is exceptional; ambience is hospitable; music is truly background...not obnoxious or intrusive upon your thoughts. Think read or socialize all doable here. A somewhat hidden but a happy place.
Nice little coffee spot with a diverse menu. While driving and we found there are only about five spots for parking but if you go across the street from the gas station there is a 4-hour paid parking lot that usually always has spaces.Coffee was fantastic and they do offer free refills on drip coffee. Theres a weekend brunch menu that has some good diversity ranging from chicken waffles to avocado toast but they also serve there normal breakfast menu as well.Ample space for getting work done and Wi-Fi was of great quality. A little pricey but I guess thats to be expected. Counter service only.
Really enjoyed our first time there! Very chill vibe and good seating. Id like to see them use something heftier on the Norwegian than a croissant, as it got very soggy. The flavors were great though! Also, didnt notice any self-service water station. The macchiato I had was spot on and full bodied.
Great atmosphere and lots of character, but the coffee was not to my standards. I had Thor house brew, which was bitter and might have been old. My friend had a decaf flat white and she was not impressed. It’s too bad, because the staff are so friendly and the setting is awesome.
Very close to gmu library... The service is good, and the guy at the counter seemed to know his stuff, so Id feel comfortable asking for recommendations from whoever is working the machines. I only got a regular coffee and it was incredible... Made me want to look up vigilante coffee (the brand they use).
Cute coffee shop! Sadly we went there on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30ish and my husbands coffee was lukewarm but they did reheat it for him. The people were nice and the vibe was nice in there. I loved my iced coffee! Would definitely recommend a visit. We found parking on the road because it was a Saturday so it was easy and close by.
This place has delicious coffee. The crew member comped us some awesome cookies. They also have some very interesting beers and hope to be serving wine soon. Fast and free WiFi. Fast competent and friendly service. Very attractive atmosphere. Doors on the ceiling.
Delicious food and coffee
I just moved from London and was in desperate need of a good, comfortable “workplace/coffee shop” with fine, single-origin coffees. This is a great one - perhaps the best in the Clarendon area!
This place is great! Tucked away, it’s a great place to get work done and enjoy a bite to eat and something to drink while you do so. Definitely going to make this a place I visit regularly!
A great place to hangout! Great coffee great food great times. Make sure you ask for their business card itll be worth your while! 😉
Quality espresso drinks, sweet and savory pastries, and a menu of hot sandwiches. Compared to the nearby Northside Social, Detour is by far a better cafe for working. Outlets are easily accessible at all the perimeter seats. There is a mix of booths, shared tables, private tables, and overstuffed chairs for seating options. Standard coffee prices (about $3.50-$4 for most espresso-based drinks), friendly service if sometimes slow. The music could be quieter. Small free parking lot, or metered street parking nearby.
Detour is a great space, in a slightly odd location. The coffee is skillfully prepared, the menu is innovative and delicious and there is lots of comfortable space to enjoy with a friend. Definitely check it out.
Serving wonderful breakfast, coffee even better.. great vibe!
Have had a few different coffee drinks here. All have been great. Solid location and a nice chill vibe.
If you want a side of funky with your latte, Detour Coffee is your spot! Its through an inconspicuous wooden door between a Jiffy Lube and a restaurant in a random part of Virginia Square in Arlington. You walk in and are greeted by burning fire art to your right and a hilarious break the glass art of a coffee cup (just visit and youll understand). Its one big room with booths, window seats, a long table, and couches. There are outlets at almost every table with strong, free wifi. Little lights decorate the space along with bikes on the wall and hanging white coffee mugs (yep!).They have a full coffee menu with good coffee (my latte was good!). They also serve wine, cheese, and a few other dinner options since they stay open late (love when coffee shops stay open late!).The service is friendly and on point. Its funky, but worth a visit!
Love the atmosphere, the staff its very nice and the food is good.
Manuel is the man. This is a great place, everyone is cordial, the renovations have been fantastic, the coffee is local roast and I can say this will be the best coffee hang-out in the area. Lets just say its a wee bit quieter than Northside Social (which is also great).
Just went because I had a coupon for a free coffee. Nice atmosphere and staff. Good coffee and great empanada. Perfect competition for the red coffee shop
Service and kitchen were extremely slow, I tried the U Street and was very disappointed. The chicken was all breading and again took far to long to prepare a to go order. Atmosphere is nice but the coffee was so so.
Great coffee! Tasty creative sandwiches. Very nice ppl. Its my best coffee spot recently.Thank you! ^_^
Great coffee and food. Very clean and good ambience with wonderful service. My new favorite place!
Mocha was great. Service was awesome and manager was engaging. Got some free espresso coupons for next visit. What else can you ask for!
Best kept coffee shop secret in Arlington. Good coffee, cool vibe.
We decided to visit this popular place for brunch. When we arrived it was packed and had to wait for a table (which it did not take more than 10 minutes). As soon as the staff cleared the table the called us but they did not wipe the table to clean it properly. Then, after ordering it took like 25-30 for the food to be ready. It was very slow, and the lack of staff and service brought my experience down. I had to walk to the bar to ask for napkins and silverware. The Mocha coffee was good and Cvivito al Plato was nice but they need to make sure the food is hot, fries were cold. They need more servers and the manager was missing in action. Service need improvement.
Good new place to get some work done. It sounds like a coffee place, but they also have tasty snacks and tapas.
Awesome space. Great coffee. Nice staff. Average food offerings good table facilities, plugs, WiFi etc
If youre in the area - STOP BY! The hospitality is incredible; the food selection and quality is underpriced for DC; the space, music and volume are just loud enough that you can easily concentrate on assignments or catch up with a friend. There are communal high tables, booths, single tables, solo couches and enough outlets to come in a group or come alone. Its truly a hidden gem with a local hangspot feel that caters to various ages. I dont even live within walking distance, but the drive is so worth it.And also - Kudos to Alina, her bright smile welcomes all!
I’ve never left a review, but I like this coffee shop so much and so want it to stay in business that I’m willing to do free marketing for them. Where should I begin? Good coffee, great food, friendly staff, and above all, terrific environment for getting some work done or relaxing with friends. I can never give enough compliments to the ambience of this place - it’s bright, spacious, and comfy; has good vibe and good WiFi; not too loud, not too crowded, and not too cold (like all other places where I need to wrap myself in a blanket). I can stay here forever and get so much work done, which doesn’t happen with most other coffee shops. I have been coming here five days a week and will continue to do so for as long as the status quo remains. Arlington desperately needs a place like this!
Atmosphere and great food. Love this place
Comfortable, cute, fast and friendly service, and my food and drink were delicious!
Great coffee and food. Looks like they have beer/wine happy hour. Room can get noisy.
The experience today was terrible. They didn’t have cash in the cash bin, I asked for extra foam and skim milk but when I got it it was bad
Flavors are amazing and coffee is so amazing. The U st sandwich was soooooo good, love the mambo sauce.
Very good coffee. Less crowded than nearby hipster hangout Northside Social.
