Owning a 97 4Runner, it stands to reason that I would need to have a mechanic I trust. Over the years, through normal wear and tear, Ive needed everything from tire service and oil changes, to muffler, clutch, suspension and electrical work (and more Im forgetting). The team at the Ames CarX has handled it all efficiently and effectively. Despite not knowing the proper lingo for various maladies, the team listens attentively to me and makes notes to make sure they address my concerns. I feel confident that they are caring for my vehicle the way they would for their own family.

I was traveling south to Kansas with my 3 children and there mother when our truck went into reduced power mode. The next morning I brought the vehicle to carx for an inspection. Halfway through the motions they tell me that I have 2 cylinder s with bad compression and that I would need serious engine repair or replacement. Long story short, I brought my truck home to Minnesota and had another inspection and come to fine every cylinder was good and my catalytic converter was clogged. Despite the manager being fully aware of my situation being stranded in Iowa with my 3-8yo, they still attempted to take advantage of me. I do NOT recommend using their business. I now see

I have been going to the Ames Car-X for a little over a year now. They have added upgraded suspension components and tires to two of my vehicles (sedan and truck), and the service has been excellent at every visit. Great staff, and they do a quality job at a fair price.

Ive used them twice. Their prices are great and they respect your time. They have a clean, comfortable space available for you to wait on your car (if you choose to wait).

Employees were helpful, professional, and performed my repairs quickly. However they called and said a lug nut was bad while rotating my tires and went ahead and replaced it since it was only a few $. The lug nut was $14.

Excellent service both times I have taken my car in to get looked at. My first experience with them was for a patch on a tire, they were very quick and able to get me in the same day. Second trip in was for replacement of tires recently, unfortunately the tires had to come up from DSM and they allowed us to come back later on in the day rather than sitting around and waiting. Will definitely continue to use Car-X for any of my car needs!

Stopped in on a road trip with what I thought was a leaking tire. They looked it over and couldn’t find anything wrong. Though I was expecting at least a nominal charge, they didn’t charge for their diagnostic services. Lobby was clean and employees were very friendly.

For anything you need fixed on your vehicle Car X will get it done for you. They are honestly the kindest and most personable people. They care about getting your vehicle and you back on the road safely. Best in town by far, will not go anywhere else.

I purchased a set of tires for my cherokee and took the salesmans advice on brand and model. This was back in december but I chose to wait until I could see how the recommended tires performed in the winter.I wish I could give more stars, I havent been this pleased with tires in a long time. I took my car in for brake inspection. I was told I needed front rotors and brake pads. They were right about rotors however they told me I needed front brake pads to. When I got home and checked the brake pads they where 75% or better. Thats an extra $ 96.40 for parts and at least a $100 in labor. That is over priced and shady. FIND A MECHANIC YOU TRUST!!!

Excellent service at car x Ames. I usually work with the store in Johnston but my sons vehicle was acting up and needed repairs. The guys down here got us in up there and quickly diagnosed the issue. The nice touch was when they called just before they started the work and let me know they could run into issues along the way given the problem but that they would contact me every step of the way and let me know. Thankfully it wasn’t anything else so the initial quote matched the final bill. Big thanks to Jon and his team.

Have been a customer here for years and never take my car anywhere else and will continue to bring any future cars here. Ive had many issues with my car and every time they have been honest and given me the best price to fix it and have shown me exactly whats wrong with it. They will never rush you into fixing something that doesnt need fixed right away. Thats why I drive over 30 minutes just to get an oil change. Ive never gotten less than 10 star service when Nathan and David are there. Ive recommended this shop to everyone I know

Brought My car in to diagnose why it couldnt fill up with gas. They were able to diagnose it but wanted $900 to do what I did in 20 minutes. The part cost me a hundred 150 Really big rip-off for the price highly recommend going somewhere else.

This place is great. They are very professional, friendly, and helpful. I did an mechanical check for a used car I was going to buy and they did a really thorough inspection which really gave me confidence. Here, you only need to pay a fair price to enjoy their excellent service. I would definitely go back here in the future if I need anything.

Took my car in for an alignment after installing my struts. Carx took me out and showed me the other things wrong that needed to be addressed before an alignment could be done. Nathan wasnt pushy about it getting fixed by them and told me when I get it done bring it back to align it which I greatly appreciated. I will definitely be back!

They’re really professional and did excellent job! My car got transmission problem. I went to another car repair shop they told me I need to change TCM and reset computer code which will cost me $800 total. I took my car to there this morning to do a check. They fixed my car successfully without any charge. I think they are reliable partner! It is a good choice to do business with them!

This place deserves a 10 star rating. Its the only place I will take my car. Its so important to find a place you trust to take your car when you know nothing about cars and this is the place. Nathan always keeps me informed on the things I do and dont need to replace or tune up to keep my car running in perfect condition.  They are very reasonably priced and often times cheaper than other places. But my favorite part is the customer service. Nathan goes above and beyond for his customers everyday and is the main reason Ive continued to be a customer at this location for over 3 years. Hes without a doubt the friendliest, kindest, most compassionate mechanic Ive ever met. Its because of him and the quality work him and his team do that I will continue to take my vehicles here forever. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

These guys are the best! We have always been able to get service when needed including emergent repairs. Nathan is alway pleasant and keeps us up to date on progress during longer repairs. TLDR: Open and honest, very helpful and patientI switched to this location after another mechanic did work without consulting me. I have interacted with Doug who has always taken the time to explain what is wrong and why the fixes they make are necessary. He has also been very accommodating when things come up mid appointment and in trying to get me the services I need as fast as possible. I have also seen other staff members remember and talk with customers and their families personally. Overall, they seem to care.

Here I am! Sitting on a comfy couch, fresh coffee made especially for me in my hands, my car is taken care of, it will be ready so fast for the half price compare to other places. Front desk - extremely professional and nicest, sweetest gentleman ever. Everything on time! Best place ever!

Regarding 3 different visits with two different cars, Car-X has been honest, professional, and truly helped me do what I needed to do for the cars in question with my budget in mind rather than just trying to sell me all of the possible services I *might* need. Amazing experience! Went to Car-X for a second opinion after being told by a dealership I needed a whole new power steering rack. They were willing to take a look at my car right away. They were incredibly friendly and took me out to my car to explain to me the issue. In addition, they stayed past close to explain everything to me. Turns out the dealership was trying to rip me off and I didnt need the $1,700 repair they quoted me! Definitely recommended Car-X over any other auto-shop AND dealership in Ames! Thank you so much!

Came in with a donut on my car after Walmart said I needed a new tire but didnt have the time to help me. Went in to car x being in a bind because I have to drive 60 miles daily for work. They got me in immediately and only needed to patch my tire instead of replace. Was in and out in 20 mins flat, Nathan, the front desk employee, was extremely friendly and understanding. These guys were super nice and very honest. My belt snapped and got wrapped up in my water pump, and my tension rod was damaged as well. I really appreciated how quickly they fixed my car, their ability to recognize and diagnose other potential issues, the advice they gave, and the quality of their work!

Great staff and management. Ive been a customer for over 6 years and wont take my car anywhere else. The mechanics have always taken great care of our vehicles and all repairs were very reasonable. We feel we have a great relationship with the manager Nathan, and has always taken great care of us.

Gave me a cheaper quote than some other places, but also put my tie rods on the incorrect sides causing grinding when I turned. Had to come back to get them fixed. They gave me a ride to a different location while I waited for it to be fixed, and picked me up when it was ready. Really great service!

I had such a wonderful experience at Car X today! After waking up to a flat tire, I was nervous and stressed all day. Even though they were incredibly busy, they were able to squeeze me in and fix my tire. As a busy college student with little knowledge about cars, it meant a lot that they were able to assist me without making me intimidated and confused. Such nice people! Very accommodating, great service, and good people!

They diagnosed and repaired my vehicle, when other places couldnt figure out what was wrong. They give you an estimate on what repairs will cost. They also have a very comfortable waiting area, with free Wi-Fi.

After interacting with a local repair center I found that the manager there was attempting to overcharge me for brakes/rotors repairs and also tried to add 5-6 more issues in order to increase the cost. When questioned this manager was quite short and refused to budge on the costs, so I contacted Car-X to receive an estimate on the brakes/rotors repairs and it ended up being half the cost that it would have been if I had stayed with the local repair center. Not only was Car-X willing to work with me on the costs but they offered to go and pick up my vehicle for me from the local repair center to make it easier on me. They provided excellent customer service and were very polite and approachable, which is the best way to establish a good customer base in the community.

Went there for help to put on tires and they say will provide a complete vehicle inspection for free. They have done the inspection, but just will keep the result sheet to themselves...Doug is able to fix the hitch by providing what they have promised, and the tech there repairs the rear calipers perfectly. Thus it definitely goes from 3 stars to 5.

Ive had good service here multiple times. Set up an appointment and be understanding that they have a lot of work to do and youll be fine. I was here for an hour with tire rotations and oil change but they made sure I was comfortable and were very friendly. Plus they always have coupons online.

This is the only place we trust with our vehicles. I love the nice waiting room, friendly workers, and the ability to get me in when I need to. They have been very reasonable, and offer 6 and 12 month no interest financing for thos bigger unexpected bills.

Had a problem that involved replacing a discontinued part in my suspension, but Doug and the guys there handled it to the best of their ability to get me back on the road. They were very professional about it as well. Im sure it was a hard and probably frustrating process trying to find a solution to my problem, and they were amazing at solving it.

There is no one I trust more with my car than the team at Car X in Ames. I had an unfortunate occurrence where my motor blew and instead of charging me an arm in a leg for what I thought would be a minor thing, they showed honesty and genuine care for me. They suggested on where I would be able to find a new reliable car and then helped me tow my former car to Carneys. Ive been going to this Car X location for a year and a half and they have always done a great job with good prices, had great service and shown love for their customers. This review is by far no where adequate to show my gratitude, but its all I can do. So to everyone on Car Xs staff, thank you so much.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!! Was told from Mitsubishi I needed to replace my entire exhaust system because it was rusted out and my o2 sensor was hanging off. Went here and they showed me the problem, turned out only the bracket holding the wire that was dangling and the o2 sensor was in place still. Also said they would weld it back free of charge and said no other problems or the exhaust did not need to be replaced. Very thankful I came here being my first time to ever come and I will continue to come for any problems in the future.

Very honest and professional. We took our van in for some front end noise and they really took their time to find what was wrong and personally took me out to the garage to show me the damaged areas. Great friendly staff polite and helpful and they do not do anything extra without discussing with you 1st.Such as there was a hole in the airconditiong leaking out,and thats why no airconditer for car. So replaced it after discussing with my friend 1st and what extra charge was .I love this place.

Car x is a fantastic place to take your vehicle if you have no knowledge of cars. Their free diagnosis are very helpful and they check with me every time to make sure I am OK with the price and service options. Car X also will hardly ever keep your car waiting for no reason and you will have your vehicle back within a few hours, not days. Ive even taken my truck there to get my light bulbs replaced and they did it all for free! If you go anywhere else theyll usually charge for the diagnosis process which is a pain. Some times Ill want my truck looked at and there was nothing wrong: free check up.

I had a slow leak in one of my tires. It took a lot of patience for them to find it. Nathan kept me informed of the processes they were using to find the slow leak, and even showed me the small nail that they found that had been causing the problem. Nathan was very courteous and kind, and the waiting area was comfortable, too.

I took my car in to the Ames car-x location last month after my car started overheating. They looked it over within a half hour of arriving and told me what was wrong with it. I had tried a couple other places prior to this and they wouldnt even look at it till the next day. Also helped me get a vehicle to rent for the night.On top of the above, they also fixed some minor exterior damage without being asked free of charge. If I could Id give a higher rating than a 5 for going above what was even expected of them.

Seriously, these guys were amazing. I pulled in without an appointment because my car was making bizarre noises every time I braked after a 1300mi drive getting back to school. They happened to have a couple minutes so they popped my car up on the lift. Turned out, my home mechanic hadnt properly tightened a brake caliper bolt and it had fallen out entirely on the cross-country drive. The guys at Car-X put a new bolt in, made sure that the car drove and sounded fine, and sent us on our way without charging us a dime. They are truly gentlemen at this auto shop, they will 100% be getting my business again.

I had a great experience with Doug at Car-X. My tire had gotten a large nail in it so I drove to Car-X on my spare tire and went in and Doug took my tire and said he would take a look at it and would call me when it was fixed. I went back to Car-X again and Doug said that I probably didnt want just the tire back because I had called roadside assistance to get my spare on my car. Car-X was pretty busy at that point and they didnt have an open stall to put my tire back on. Doug told me to come back later when it was less busy so they could but my regular tire back on my car. I came back later and they put my fixed tire back on my car. Doug felt bad that I had to come back to Car-X again because they werent able to get my tire on the first time I came back he gave me the whole repair for free. I thought that was great customer service and I recommend Car-X for anyone who has any car needs.

Nate is awesome Service Manager. I had a 3:00 pm appt, but didnt get off work early enough to keep appt. They still were able to get me in for service on my vehicle. Also let me know my spare tire has a bad sensor, causing my TPM sensor light to come on intermittently.
