Excellent store. I occasionally drop by here to pick up a record and I never leave the place empty handed. There’s always a record they have that I need for my collection and they have a diverse selection of stuff. And if they somehow don’t have that one record you’re looking for, they can order it for you. The staff is pretty chill and I’ve talked with them about a couple of bands. You can tell these guys are passionate about music.

JL Records is a candy store for you ears! I went in for vinyl, and was not disappointed! The selection is fantastic. I went looking for one artist and ended up with 3 more! Vinyl is making a comeback, and JL Records will help you with your collection.

OMG they have EVERYTHING. They have records, cassette tapes, 8 track tapes, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes. Prices are nice. Employees are nice. Its not going to be a quick in and out because they have so much to look at. Youre going to want to take your time and look through everything. I love this place.

Half-hidden gem! JL Records is the type of place thats almost gone extinct in our world of big box, one-stop stores. A music store that actually sells music, hallelujah! Huge selection with a knowledgeable staff. Word to the wise, go with an agenda. Giggly time-wasting browsers arent their dream customers. They are serious about music.

Super impressed with their vinyl selection (wide range of genres and artists both old and new) and will definitely be going back again. Great staff and a cool collection of vintage musical paraphernalia around the entire store. Only downside is that it is very tempting to spend entirely too much money when buying more records lol.

Today I needed my fix for some 70s Prog Rock and was not disappointed! JL is a great source for a huge variety of music and Ive found some hard to find movie here as well. Knowledgeable and friendly staff! This is my go to store for vinyl in Lafayette.

Visited JL records for my very first time yesterday. All I can say is wow to everything that they have in the store. Their vinyl collection is out of this world! My wife bought me a record player last week and Im very excited to start collecting vinyl once again. Looking forward to my next visit this coming week for more purchases. The employees were super friendly. This place is a must visit if you LOVE music!!

Cool place. I always spend at least 30 minutes looking around. Great vinyl record selection. New and used. Very well organized. They got cds, and videos too. We always find something that peaks our interests. Fair prices.

Tons of inventory, but the vinyl is ridiculously overpriced. Many items are double the sticker price of what Im seeing at other record stores. Maybe they hike the prices because of all the students from Purdue, but I left without buying anything - which is super rare.

Stepping into JL Records is like visiting the rock n roll hall of fame. Theres tons of rare and unique posters, pictures, autographed pictures, guitars, and other music memorabilia decorating the store!Even if youre not looking to make a purchase, its worth it to go inside just to browse.Visiting is an experience all on its own, but browsing the neatly organized cds and vinlys is a breeze! If a group has solo projects, theyre listed in the tag for that group -- The Who lists Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend as solo artists.Theres so many wonderful items youll be unable to find anywhere else. Ive gotten several box sets and other bundled cd and vinyl sets over the years.Friendly staff, polite and helpful. Very knowledgeable about many genres of music and were able to answer my questions regarding the availability of a cd [its no longer in print, sadly]. I come in ever so often and they always remember me!JL Records is the absolute best location for vinyls, cds, video games, and movies. They have it all!! Theres an upstairs loft for the records, too!

At 58 yrs. old, I have a long love of music. I grew up poor and our entertainment was the A.M. radio blasting the hits of the time. JL Records took me to my youth as the titles and artist passed between my fingers.The 45s I gazed upon was of the finest quality.

They are amazing when you have a hard time finding anything music. I love them and they are a staple in our city.

Stopped in to check out the vinyl selection while in the area. I was as blown away today as I was when I visited the store years ago. I could have spent hours flipping through the albums and the prices were as good as you will find at any local record store. I will definitely be back when I am in Lafayette and have more time to browse! Thank you!

Greatest music store ever!

Amazing place and service. We arrived thinking it was small and abandoned but you go in to find a paradise of everything! Movies, records, games, and CDs! The gentleman working helped us find an entire collection of movies. You wont find a store like this just anywhere. If you have the time definitely stop by youll love it!!!

I enjoyed talking with the proprietor. (Jim) about the albums I was looking for. The resurgence of vinyl among the millenials. The quality of CDs vs. Vinyl. His knowledge of music is impressive. Its a unique and original store. I know he can order virtually any cd or dvd I am looking for if he does not already have it in stock. Many used records and cds as well. Great place!

We stop here whenever were in town. Great stock of used DVD and some rare CDs. The record collection is small in comparison to the other media and dedicated record stores.

Organization is key to any good record store, this place is very well organized. I’m so tired of flipping through every vinyl looking for the one I want this place easy to find anything you need. Anyone complaining about price needs to stop and complain to someone that cares you are buying a premium product you are gonna pay a premium price. At the end of the day after visiting bum record store after bum record store this place is a breath of fresh air from the friendly staff to the great organization this place is perfect and earns the 5 stars. This will be the only record store I will buy from.

This is such a great place! I could have spent the entire day there when I visited. This store has friendly and laid back staff and an excellent selection of lps, movies, cds, and so much more.

They helped me when I didnt know where to go with a home made album from my dads 1960 era jazz band covered in paper dust or whatever else, not played since the late 60s. I thought it was shelac. Not only did they clean it and others from his college band, they had it playing when I walked in, and showed me the equipment used to make such a record and put his home recording on cd so that my dad will be able to hear music at a time band members have passed. They made extra one hell be able to share with a close friend too. I may not have willpower to hold off to Christmas to give it to him. No where else could help me with this but JL knew all about this strange looking album type and helped me in a day! Also that store I could have spent our entire vacation exploring. Edit: I read a few other reviews concerned with price comparing with Discogs. BS. I bought new quality cds at JLs one, I couldnt find on Discogs, but not comparable (and Vons is great for some music but not the genre selection of JLs). The staff at JLs is so informed on vinyl but also all types of music and recordings. They shared so I can enjoy knowing the story behind the music. Having teamwork to provide me perspective of three experts in the store, being able to help with hopeless recordings, Please pay to have professionals advising you and keep them employed for when you need that advice. Plus the prices I paid were better than fair.

They have a good selection, but they charge ridiculous prices. Plus they sell bootlegs as special imports which doesnt fool anyone

Very cool store near Purdue U. Traveled about 2 1/2 hours to get there but definitely worth the trip. Thats what I do in my semi retired life is look up potentially cool record stores and hit the road. Surprisingly lots of sealed out of print vinyl titles including some older RSD albums. Came away with an Audioslave album that had been on my list for a long time. The vinyl is all upstairs and organized neatly by genres, new and used mixed. The lower level has videos and the most CDs Ive ever seen in my life. A couple of cool dudes explained the vinyl layout to me and offered to order anything they didnt have . Will certainly be back even though it is a far drive for me.

Although a little pricy on the cds and DVD’s, if you want a copy of something this place has got it! If I am ever in desperate need of a copy of a movie or cd I can always bank on them having it. And you could not ask for a better priced selection of used vinyls. I got Carole King’s Rhymes and Reasons for 5 dollars! A steal dude, definitely will be coming back.

Great store. Neat and fun. One of the few record stores left. My sister got an Avett Brothers CD and it was empty. They replaced it. Crazy that can happen from the record company. They have some older video games too like 2DS for Nintendo. And stuff.

What a great place to find collectibles and rarities. Spent 3 hours there and needed about 5 more to get through everything that I skimmed over.

I was student in 1987 and used to go here for the best selection of imports! BTW, I still have them all! Mostly old Depeche Mode imports. An Enjoy the Silence mini CD that you had to play with an adapter. Awww .... the good old days! Im glad to see youre still there and Ill stop in the next time Im in West Lafayette!

This place is nice but the vinyl is over priced and costs like $25 per record but the rest is good the customer service was great and they are very organized.

My go-to record store and one of the best I have ever been to! It doesnt look like much on the outside, but the inside is paradise for the record collector. Everything is organized beautifully by genres and alphabetical artists. They have almost everything you would ever want and if they dont have it they will order it for you! Shout out the owner, Jim, and the awesome staff for running this store so well and being so friendly! The past two RSDs were very well organized and everyone got a chance to get what they want. Go here for your record, CD, video game, and movie needs!

I visited JL Records while in Lafayette, IN on business. I had the good fortune to stay at a hotel within walking distance of the store.They had a good selection of music from one of my favorite groups - even though this group is a guilty pleasure for a lot of people. The people working there were friendly and fun to deal with.Visiting JL Records was the highlight of my visit to the Lafayette / West Lafayette area. I hope to be able to come back someday while they are still in business.

This is one of the coolest record stores still around. The selection they have is second to none, if youre looking for something on CD or vinyl theres a good chance theyll have it, and at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is so cool, music memorabilia is on every piece of the walls, it makes you feel likely youre stepping back in time in the best way.

This is one of the largest stores for vinyl & Compact Discs I have visited. Give yourself some extra time to dig in. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Stores like these are becoming harder and harder to find due to the ever changing landscape, such as streaming, etc. They also participate in annual events like Record Store Day which is not to be missed.

I have a conundrum with JL Records. On one hand I want to support my local music stores, and on the other hand I dont want to overpay for my music. They have some pretty hard to find records here and I appreciate that, but a lot of them are overpriced. Every time I go record shopping I have Discogs opened on my phone. I check the pressing and the quality so I can price match to see if its a good deal. I very often isnt a good deal here. Ive found some records that are priced 40% more than the market price. You can hop over to Vons and get some of the same records for noticeably cheaper. However, JL Records has a gigantic inventory and Vons doesnt.If you want to buy new records or CDs to support your local music stores then shop here. If you want to try to find a deal on an obscure record you have been looking for then go to Discogs.

Extremely large selection of CDs on main floor and vinyl upstairs. Found their prices to be high but the selection was good enough that I found 2 LPs I had been searching for there. Paid $20 each used but made a “bird in the hand” purchase. Also important to keep these stores in business.Plan on spending some extended time to take it all in.Also many sealed boxed sets were available that are out of print.

This store had an amazing collection. However, the store is very dusty. If you have allergies, stay away. There is never anyone there to help anyone. HINT, have your door have a bell so the cashier can get back to the door if need be. Other than that this store is what shopping for music should be.. Remember going to the store and looking for one thing, but because of their vast collection, you bought a whole lot more? Go check this store out, its worth it!

One of the best record stores Ive ever been too. They have such a wide variety of all sorts of music, especially rock/metal (my personal favoriate) but all around an amazing store

The staff has no empathy whats so ever. I went in to purchased a Vinyl Record that my favorite band agreed to sign. Unfortunately after purchasing and removing shrink wrap I noticed a tare on side the cover, normally this wouldnt be a problem put since its my favorite album and my favorite band agreed to sign it it had to be perfect. I also purchased another album just to support the business. 2 minutes after paying and noticing the tare I came back and asked for a refund and possible exchange for the album that was getting signed. Immediately I was met with hostility and began to be laughed at on how a tare on the cover was no reason to return and was told they would not refund me. After about 10 minutes of explaining that the tares where hard to see under the shrink wrap I left feeling unwelcomed.

They have an amazing selection. Every music lovers dream, some things are kinda over priced. Butttttttt. Still a freaking awesome stars. I would go live it 100 stars if I could!!!!

There are many record stores I love to travel and visit. This one is my favorite. It’s about an hour away from me but always worth the trip. One of the BIGGEST selections I’ve seen. Even their selection of vinyl is pretty big. They also carry lots of limited pressings, special vinyl, and boxed sets. Stop in and check it out!

If I could leave more than one bad review I would. Staff is extremely rude, and is out to grab your money and keep it when you realize you were scammed.

The staff here is rude. We were handling the collision issue with the police that we preferred to stay in the position where the accident happened. No warning and talking before, the staff came out and shouted Get out of my store. You piss me off. He could mention his concern with us and the police in a decent way.

Pretty cool for nostalgic purposes, I do think for LPs the prices seemed high. But definitely a cool place to check out.
