The best ice cream place in the area! Super clean inside with friendly staff. Lots of fun flavors including the standard chocolate and vanilla. The ice cream was creamy and flavorful. The lemon berry poppy seed was a unique flavor that tasted amazing. There is a small outdoor seating area with a benches next door.
It too sweet and they dont let you try it before you order like other shop. I saw pretty good reviews. I tried 4 scoops of different flavors but nothing impress. Just creative flavors but Im not a fan.
Delicious, non-traditional ice creams -- not just the flavors but also in their assortment of non-dairy concoctions. A cute patio out front to enjoy a cone or a cup. On the night I went, they had hometown heroes Fugazi on the speakers and I felt like I was at home.
Great place for ice cream, shake, or sorbets, especially after a long bike ride. Great home made flavors. I only wish they would sell French fries to dip into shakes, that would be stellar!
I went with my partner last night. Shes vegan and ordered the Cereal Milk flavor. Soon after, she began having a strong reaction to it. Turns out that it was nut-based-- cashews specifically-- which shes highly allergic to. When she went back to confirm that there were cashews, the counterperson didnt know and had to confirm with the manager. While they offered a refund, the lack of allergen knowledge and signage is upsetting. It ended what was otherwise a pleasant evening. I dont like posting negative reviews, but after visiting MDIs website, there was no email or person listed to relay this issue.Otherwise, Ive heard great things about this place, but allergen info and signage is a necessary change.
I would rank it above Ice Cream Jubilee but below Jenni’s. The flavors aren’t *that* unusual as others claim (who ISN’T selling a salted caramel ice cream?), but what they have is good. The ingredients are clearly high quality (especially the chocolate—cheap ice creams skimp on good cacao) though for me the texture is just slightly off. I eat a LOT of ice cream if you can’t tell. I would come back for sure.
An amazing local ice cream spot. Delicious flavors that span the spectrum from the basics of strawberry to a spicy Thai chilly. Located comviently on the MT. Pleasant strip, it should be a go to ice cream spot for anyone in the area.
Rude staff combined with delicious ice cream. Bummer theyre not nice. That aside, I wish they offered a taste of the ice cream before you buy. Not sure covid is a valid excuse not to offer samples, unless theyre using the same spoon for all their customers lol. I really wanted to try the strawberry but Im picky about this particular flavor, and did not want to spend $6 on a scoop I didnt like. Do I just buy it and then return it if I dont like it? Just offer a sample, goes a long way.
The Lamington flavour is a must for any Aussie/Kiwi! Pure magic in how they have identically replicated a Lamington into an ice cream.
Best ice cream that we had on the island. The ice cream was also the cheapest. Tons of flavors to pick from and outside seating in the park area.
Great prices and unique ice cream flavor options (girl scout cookies, blueberry buttermilk sherbet) with classic feel. Good customer service. Will return.
The flavors are so fun and tasty. Fresh bas tasted like basil and very refreshing, lemon curd coriander was appropriately and deliciously tart. Blueberry sour cream was my favorite, and salted wildflower honey was a standout for giving off that distinct honey aroma. Highly recommended!
Delicious flavors with fresh ingredients. Nice outdoor sitting, too.
Yummy fun flavors for one of my favorite foods in one my favorite neighborhoods. Super friendly staff and service.
Love this place. The vegan ice cream is mediocre. But the regular dairy ice cream is fantastic.
The flavors of ice-cream are great. I have the salted caramel and chocolate and they were amazing. The shop is a 9 minute walk from Columbia Heights Station, but kind of had a difficult time with fi ding the building since the name doesnt stand out when on the other side of the street. Would definitely love to go back once they are at full service.
Great flavors including yummy non-dairy options!
Delicious and inventive ice cream flavors! There’s always some old favorites and some new things to try. I always wish there were more dairy or lactose free varieties, but they routinely keep 3-4, which is more than many other ice cream shops.
I heavily suggest the London Fog. It was so unique and delicious.
Good ice cream with a wide variety of interesting flavors.
No cones! Cookies and cream very creamy but not much by way of cookies.
Fantastic flavors and just a short walk from my house, whats not to love?
I have tried many other DC trendy places and this one wins out by far! Excellent texture with creaminess similar to New England style and delicious creative flavors that taste good! Thought the sugar ratio was on point - although a bit on the sweeter side. Flavor profile didnt taste artificial, but not the most local ingredients. There is a comment below that flavors werent impressive and they cited getting salted caramel- however, comment didnt mention the adventurous flavors of chocolate wasabi and thai chili (peanut butter, coconut, and strong red chili aftertaste). Prices on par for DC and reasonable portion size. Cute and clean store too.
The pralines and cream were heavenly! Nice little ice cream parlour in the city
The lamington was excellent
Tastes great but they were out of several of the more popular flavors.
Bright, clean, airy, friendly. Generous servings. Deliciously thick and creamy. Blueberry sour cream crumble had the right ratio of crumble to fruit, and 7 layer bar was very pleasant, although the chocolate chips were only just ok.
Best ice cream ever
Ice cream and the restaurant itself is good, but they do not have vanilla icecream, which is a huge pet peev for me personnaly
This ice cream shop is the BEST in the DMV area. Reminds me of home up in New England. The flavors are fantastic. The strawberry sorbet is absolutely the best! I dont know how they pack so much strawberry flavor in such a small scoop but they do and it is FANTASTIC. Love the decor inside ... A few nice nods to the Maine origins.
There isnt a better ice cream place in DC for unique and delicious ice cream. Every tub is made in limited quantities so you can come back 100 times and not be bored of it!They also tend to carry 2 - 4 vegan ice cream options.
They had so many fun and interesting flavors! I loved the blueberry sour cream crumble and salted caramel. Next time I’m in the area, I’m definitely going back!
Delicious ice cream and good size portions.
Delicious ice-cream and really conscientious customer service! Will definitely be ordering pints from them again.
Wow. I thought the great battle of DC ice cream was Jeni’s v. Jubilee. Turns out we’ve all been getting it wrong. Mount Desert puts both of them to shame. 7 layer bar ice cream was everything I wanted to be.
It has really unique flavors that dont seem like they should work but Mount Desert makes them work and they taste AMAZING. The staff is also very friendly and helpful.
Glad there is a store in D.C. Always great ice cream flavors available. In the summer of 2020, the store opens at 3pm.
This a really excellent ice cream shop. They have a variety of traditional and unusual flavors (unusual is the best choice!) Servings are generous - even single scoops are ample for one person. It is quite popular at most times - there are always a few patrons on their small front patio in fine weather.
Interesting flavors, cool vibe. The staff seemed friendly and down to earth. Their menu has floats, sundaes, affogatos, hot chocolate, pints, even stuff for dogs - so there are plenty of reasons to keep going back. When I tasted the khulfi I said thats accurate but I was probably more impressed with the toasted coconut tasting perfect and not sugary. Good stuff!
The ice cream was phenomenal!!!
Mountains of icecream in a pleasant location.
Friendly staff, delicious ice cream. Ive never been before today and Ill definitely be back for more. My Blueberry Sour Cream/ Buttermint combo was yum yum!!
Wonderful place for a treat
Very tasty. $5 for a cup but worth every bite as a special treat. I got the Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble and my friend got Khulfi. Complex, delicious, and creamy.
Its very good ice cream, just like I remember it from my experience at one of their Bar Harbor locations. I had the cookies n cream. It was good. I had the blueberry sour cream. It was REALLY good. The staff is friendly if a little inexperienced at this early stage. They have an espresso machine if you are feeling coffee. Whats not to like?I maybe think Jenis is still better, albeit more expensive than MDI. For the neighborhood, though, this place is good news.
Really amazing ice cream. During the CoVid crisis Brian hand delivered door, contactless of course. My family and friends loved it too. Have to go to Mt. Pleasant to continue to reap the benefits. Recommend the 7 layer, real strawberry, cookies n cream, nutella, dark chocolate coffee, bay of figs...cant go wrong.
AMAZING ice cream - we ordered through Uber Eats for #selfcare purposes and everything was fabulous, from the blueberry sour cream crumble, cookies and cream, coconut, etc. Really vivid, delicious flavors -- some of the best ice cream in town!
This place is the real deal! The serving sizes are actually appropriate for the price, unlike other places that charge the same for a thimble. And the ice cream itself is delicious! The toasted coconut is phenomenal. I also tried the Nutella and their girl scout flavor - both were really good.
Delicious ice cream
This is the best ice cream place in DC. The toasted coconut and real strawberry are particularly incredible!
Best ice cream in the city!
If real Girl Scout cookies tasted as good as the Mount Dessert Girl Scout flavor ice cream. Minty with huge chunks of choc cookie!!! The single scoop is large but I was tempted to add a scoop of real strawberry to my order. Another visit in short order!
Having been to the three locations in Maine, I was very excited to learn that an MDI Ice Cream opened in DC. It did not disappoint, its as delicious as the ones in Maine! Bay of Figs is my favorite, right now, but Im sure that will change as the flavors change. Delicious ice cream served by friendly staff, what else could you ask for?
As someone who loves to vacation in Bar Harbor, I was so excited to see that MDI Ice Cream was coming to DC! I tried girl scout, sea salt caramel, and dark coffee - all of them were so delicious! They have at least 20 unique flavors and 2 vegan options. Best ice cream Ive had in DC so far!
Tons of unique flavors + classics. Can’t go wrong with anything here, always tasty!
Great ice cream. Huge selection. If youre a value seeker, youll notice that a triple isnt that much more expensive than a single. Maybe just treat yourself.
Very unfriendly people. Ice cream flavor is not that good
Good ice cream. Many flavors to choose. You can sit outside and enjoy your ice cream
Mount Desert serves the creamiest and most delicious icecream around. Even the basic chocolate icecream is heavenly! I’ll be back soon!
Ice cream was good, have some interesting mixtures of ice cream they have come up with. All I suggest is if you say an ice cream has a kick as in hot or then it should have that, the ice cream that should have spice to hit had no kick, or not what I would call a kick to it. Work on the I think it was habanero ice cream.
Delicious ice cream! I had the London Fog and Real Strawberry. London Fog blew me away! Who knew earl grey ice cream would taste so good??
So good!!! I was visiting DC when I tried it. The Khulfi is amazing!! Dont walk by...stop by!! You wont regret it.
This ice cream is EXTREMELY rich. It tastes like eating syrup. It has many delicious and interesting flavors!
I am always on the hunt for not just good but epic ice cream experiences. MDIIC was nothing short of amazing. Dense and packed with flavor. The staff are amazingly patient and full of smiles as they dish up scoops of heaven on earth for those of us that marvel like zombies at just how something could taste so good yet can’t decide which flavor to get - I wanted them all!! At last I ‘settled’ on a scoop of chocolate and a scoop of 7 layer bar. Amazing and yes, truly epic! The chocolate rich, dense and satisfyingly authentic; the 7 layer chock full of chips, coconut, nuts and who knows what else. I have travelled all over the country sampling ice cream and I personally stock no less than 10 flavors in my freezer at home so I pride myself on knowing a little something about my favorite dessert. MDIIC is nothing short of incredible. Oh how I would love for them to open a shop in Denver!
The most delicious ice cream I ever had. Very creamy and tasty.
When I went to the Ice cream store I was greeted with respect and with a smile, a young women by the name of Rebekka she was very respectful and very patient with me as I was on my journey to pick my choice of ice cream. Shout out to her she was really patient it was nice meeting you Rebekka.
Drop everything and have their Kulfi. Its to die for. The best I have ever had.
Best Icecreams in The World.
Great place, friendly people. I love the vegan options--especially the peanut butter shake with oat milk.
The place is a gem. Lots of flavors. Including dairy free!
The best ice cream in DC! I have loved all flavors I’ve tried (and they have some very interesting flavor combos), but I’m particularly smitten with the worlds BEST butterscotch miso ice cream!!!
Go here. You won’t regret it. Order the blueberry ice cream. Die happy.
SO delicious !!!! Best ice cream in DC hands down. Super high quality, a lot of local and organic products — both classic and unique flavors. I dream of this ice cream. Also, a lot of vegan options! 🍦
The best ice cream in DC—if not in the States! You absolutely *have* to try their Salmiakki, although Khulfi, fig, and matcha flavors are also high up there.
The best ice cream in DC. Theyve got great flavors, and the staff is wonderful. Definitely stop in.
So damn creamy and delicious. I wanted to put my face into my coconut and dark chocolate scoops and use them for pillows.
Glorious ice cream. Great vegan flavors.
I got a flight. A few flavors I liked, a few I didn’t. And It took 18 minutes to make it through the line and get the ice cream (I timed it).
Great ice cream, flavors range from real strawberry and a Brazilian brigadeiro to Thai peanut and Butter Beer
Best ice cream Ive ever had. Tbh I like ice cream but I prefer other desserts normally and only really buy ice cream bc of my wife. I would take their kulfi ice cream over any other dessert no thoughts on the matter. I moved to NYC and my heart is broken bc I dont know where to get kulfi ice cream anymore and Im addicted . I miss this place so much. :(
If you frequent the state of Maine, you may have fond memories of evening strolls to a Mount Desert Island Ice Cream shop. Now you dont have to book that Southwest flight to Portland, Maine to get your ice cream fix. Two DC locals in partnership with Linda, the chain owner, opened their first DC location in Mount Pleasant (the perfect neighborhood for a community feeling ice cream shop). The shop itself is pretty small, but they maximize the space well. There are long window seating near the main window and a larger outdoor patio. As a former resident of Mount Pleasant, I recommend getting your ice cream and taking a stroll down Mount Pleasant Street and take in the local restaurants, stores, and parks. After all, they say Mount Pleasant is a village within the city.Mount Desert Island ice cream as a product is made in small batches giving it a more homemade taste to each scoop. Like all ice cream shops, you can get your ice cream in a cup, cone, or waffle cone. Unlike other ice cream shops, Mount Desert Island Ice Cream makes more bold flavors. You have the usual suspects like cookies and cream and sweet cream, but they also have unique flavor combinations like coriander berry streusel and khulfi (a more savory ice cream made with pistachios, cardamon, safron, almond and sweetened condensed milk). They also have a handful of vegan options. In terms of portions, they give you a healthy scoop. I ordered two scoops (sweet cream and cookies and cream) on a waffle cone and it was more than enough. Perhaps thats why it costs more than $7 for two scoops on a waffle cone.If you need an ice cream fix, Mount Desert Island Ice Cream is a worthy contender!
OMG the ice cream here rocks. Flavors are creative and staff is very helpful
Friendly and fast service, really good ice cream! Literally no complaints.
Wonderful variety of new flavors. Nice staff.
Some of the best ice cream I have ever had! Love this place!
Besy Ice Cream in DC...possibly The Planet!!
Innovative and fun ice cream concoctions
Flavors were a bit weaker than I remember from before.
Delicious homemade ice cream with lots of fun flavors. Definitely needed this in Mount Pleasant
Ice cream is made on the premises. Lots of unique flavors.
Highly recommend the Vietnamese coffee!
They had a great selection of ice cream.
The ice cream is excellent, but only 4 stars because they close too early and are overpriced.
Best ice cream in DC! Vegan options! Friendly staff! Great espresso!
