I used to get Philz a lot when living back in CA. So happy to see Philz here! I like the Turkish delight and mint mojito the most.

Excellent coffee--I recommend the Philtered Soul. It does tend to be very busy, but usually one or two seats are available. Unfortunately, theres only one bathroom available. It is not cleaned very often and tends to become extremely dirty. Another bathroom has been listed as out of order for months. With the high customer volume, its a considerable inconvenience.

A really nice little chain! Im a country bumpkin, so I hadnt heard of it, but it has a great variety of coffee and a pretty homey atmosphere, which is a great offset to some of the more intimidating coffee shops in the area. The workers were willing to help me out for my first visit, very helpful. Ill remember this place when Im back in town!

Been here twice - both less than stellar experiences. I really wanted to like it, and I tried to be positive. It really just missed the mark for me.First, they don’t have espresso drinks. As someone who exclusively drinks espresso-based coffee, it was astounding to hear this. Also, the prices are insanely high. My medium regular coffee was over $5, no extras. The first time I went, they started kicking us out of the outdoor patio area very early. I’ve worked a coffee shop so I get cleanup - but if you close at 6, you should close at 6 not 5:35. I know the staff has to stay 1hr past closing anyway, so why kick out paying customers? The second time, I waited 21 minutes for my plain pour over coffee. TWENTY ONE MINUTES. I’m not exaggerating. I eventually had to go up and say something. They were very busy so I cut some slack, but people way behind me in line had been served. The guy who was supposed to be filling orders was goofing off, chatting with other employees casually as a crowd stood and waited silently for drinks. Not great. Won’t be back. Won’t recommend.

Philz brews good coffee, I’ve found from just a small handful of times I’ve had it. Nice touches I hadn’t thought of previously. So I was pleased to find Philz in Dupont Circle where my job recently re-located.I was frustrated the first couple times I went in though and walked back out. Several baristas, confusing signage, long wait.I decided to try it again one morning, really wanting a morning coffee. I commented to the cashier about the confusing signage and he agreed. There was only one other employee (I realize there’s a hiring shortage in food service so perhaps here, too). So I waited quite a while for that simple black coffee. It was good. But does my full name really need to be printed on the label pasted onto the cup?!?This feel like an imposition. How about just a first name?Sorry Philz, I’m reluctant to return when there’s other good coffee around. (But thanks for the mint sprig idea!)

I decided to give this place a try after seeing lines form every morning on my way to the office. The decor and the vibe were pretty cool and the blends they have all look interesting. I ordered the Philharmonic and even though the flavor was ok, I wasnt impressed with the consistency of the coffee. Being an espresso guy I am used to something different but would like to come back and try one of the sandwiches or pastries.

Out of three orders made between me and my friends, two were messed up. My coffee was never made and I had to walk up and ask about it ten minutes later before they started making it, and personally I thought it didn’t taste good. The error was unavoidable it seems however, and thusly was no one’s fault, and I don’t like sweet things so the coffee may be more to someone else’s preference. My friends coffee was messed up, but it seems he could have asked for it have been remade. Definitely overpriced. My friend enjoyed his Croissant and my other friend enjoyed her coffee and muffin.

I was pretty excited to come because the place was highly recommended by a friend. But if your concept is fresh brewed coffee and you’re going to charge $4 for a cup, you’ve got to at least train your baristas. I ordered a black silken splendor and it was incredibly over extracted (bitter) when I reported this to the barista retorted “well, you ordered a black coffee... I can add cream or sugar.” Again, if the whole concept is a fresh pour over cup and you’re going to charge for a great cup, then at least make sure you barista knows that coffee can be over extracted.

As a frequent customer of Philz in West Hollywood and Santa Monica, this particular location near Dupont Circle in Washington DC fails to compare in service and quality. In my opinion, you should be able to get the same experience at any Philz locations, regardless of geographic location. Other locations that I have visited provide a much warmer environment and a better tasting cup of coffee. My recommendation, send this particular crew to train at a California store.

Being from NYC, I had never heard of a pricing scheme like this. Maybe its typical elsewhere. For coffee, no matter what you get, the price is by size. Easy. Its pour-overs only, which seems to be the norm here as well. Anyway, super friendly people. Quick, especially for a pour-over. Nice coffee. Im a fan. PS if you were just getting a plain coffee, you might find it a bit pricey. Actually, a lot pricey. AND, since I wasnt, I really cant comment on the taste or quality of the coffee itself, but my sorta latte was delish.

This place is awesome and stands by a really impressive and customer-oriented philosophy where they actually make you your drink and make you taste it in front of them before you actually pay for it. Never encountered a cafe where you can actually do that. They stand out and I wish they could expand more on the east coast since they’re only in D.C and SF! Great cafe and Dawn, our barista, was a pleasure to meet and chat with! Warm, friendly staff and atmosphere. Wish they had more tables and chairs though because it’s a popular spot!

Totally in love with Philz Coffee! I have always heard of Philz in Los Angeles, never been and when I saw there was one that opened in DuPont Circle, I knew I had to try!The experience is quite different than any other coffee shop I have been to! You actually order it directly from the barista (or are they called coffee brewers, since theres no barista machine?). Any how, the brewers are so nice and helpful when it is your first time and you just simply are clueless on how to order!Well I had told mine I like my coffee black and strong! She recommended the Camp Fire, which is a blend of their Ether and their Aromatic Arabic beans. After you order, you proceed to the cashier and pay for your order, then you go back to the person you ordered from and wait for your cup of Joe. She nailed it! My first sip was like a punch of caffeine and that intense coffee flavor that I love and crave! Definitely hit a spot!I saw there was many more drinks to try and I think the next time I visit, Ill try some other flavors out!

The store is nice and big with enough space to walk around and even sit and enjoy your drink/ food. They have a wide selection of coffees and teas to choose from (light, medium, strong blends).I generally pick a flavor from the light or the medium roast as the strong roasts are bit much for me.Each drink is made from scratch by the barista so it takes a few minutes, but the final product is worth the wait! This place does get busy during the afternoons but the staff is good at managing the line quite efficiently. The folks working here are friendly and accommodating and are ready to provide assistance if I am unable to decide on what flavor to get.Great spot for coffee in the area!

Good place for the gourmet and adventurous coffee lover. The staff is friendly and the location is prime. Limited on food and there seem to be quite a few loiterers during the day, but not as bad as the old days of SB, where every wanna-be-writer would camp out at the local SB for an average of 12 hours a day.
