Ive been here a few times and always enjoyed it. Visiting during the pandemic, gave me a chance to see how good they really are and they did not disappoint! The service was great, the food was excellent and the system they have in place for ordering to reduce contact is fantastic. Its quick, easy, convenient and efficient! I hope they keep it in place once theyre allowed to operate at full capacity again.

I was introduced to this restaurant for the first time by my Cambodian friend. I couldn’t think what Taiwanese+Cambodian food would be, but I was happy to be there and tested a few dishes and a drink (Angkor WHAT) for our late lunch. I definitely will go back again the next time I visit DC and try more dishes. I love the environment and the restaurant is clean. I’m so happy and proud to be Cambodian! 😍🥰😘☺️😜

Really enjoyed my experience at Maketto. I have been wanting to go for quite some time. And I think they did a really nice fusion of Asian flavors with some modern ingredients. I will say everything tasted greatly but it wasn’t my favorite things I have eaten. The fried chicken was great but did have an overpowering flavor of fish sauce. The shrimp dumplings were amazing and the sauce was very similar to papaya salad, but I am not the biggest fan of ground shrimp. I think the beef rice was amazing out of everything.

I found out about Maketto on Instagram and was glad I made a reservation! My friends and i came on a Monday night so it wasnt busy. We were able to sit outside and when it got chilly, our server turned on the outdoor heater. We got the lo mein and the veggie spring rolls, which was delicious. I had so much lo mein leftover too so its definitely reasonably priced for a medium plate (Maketto splits their food menu by size of plate). Great Asian cuisine! 👍

We made a reservation and was seated immediately. The tables are separated enough and staff were wearing masks. The ordering process was super simple, scan the code, order and pay. The service was really quick. We got our appetizer quick. The staff were polite and friendly. If you get a chance take the out patio seating, the ambiance is very very good. Coming to the food, we got 1. Pork steamed Bao (5/5) the meat was grinded and the sauce with it was amazing. 2. Veggie spring roll (5/5) super crunchy with good amount of stuffing. 3. Sourdough Scallion pancake (5/5) great flavor and very good. 4. Soy milk and dough sticks (4/5) The sticksii were crunchy and the milk was warm. The first 3 items are a must. Coming to the main course 5. Maketto Fried Chicken (4/5) The portion is huge- feeds four people easily. The chicken was cooked very good. But the fish sauce smell is a tad bit more. If you are not a fish sauce guy don’t get it. 6. Wok fried noodles (5/5) a must one from the main course. 7. Spicy pork sausage and bone marrow (4/5) The marrow was super fatty but the sausage has lot of turmeric flavor to it which I was not a big fan. They nailed the appetizers but main course was not in the same boat. Overall a good place with lot of veggie options. Street paid parking is available.

Awesome atmosphere! Modern and classy. My friend and I ended up grabbing some drinks before the kitchen open at 11:30 A.M. I got the matcha latte with oat milk and vanilla, it was delicious and on the less sweet side, which is what I favor. For food, we ate the amazing and well presented Boa platter! I was on the more expensive end, which cost around $32. It definitely is enough to feed two maybe even three. There is a service fee, tax fee and always tip. A little bit more expensive but the environment and food quality is worth it!

Maketto has been one of my favorite spots in DC for years. Keem and the Maketto team made it so easy to choose their upstairs cafe and patio for our wedding reception. Mr.Bruner -Yang had me with the delicious ramen at Toki Underground. Maketto is an entirely different, wonderful, and new experience. When you walk in the vibe is modern zen. Clean lines, lots of light, and delicious aromas. We were lucky and got the top floor to ourselves. The contactless ordering and diligent staff make the experience worry free. The food was DELICIOUS!!!! That sauce for those soft pillowy pork baos needs to be bottled and sold. The scallion pancakes were crispy, oniony, savory bliss! The chicken wings we the absolute definition of umami and the spice sneaks up on you in the best way! If you are a fan of drunken noodles try the drunken shrimp fried rice, it was so light and fluffy with plump juicy shrimp ! It had just the right balance of flavors especially with the sauce on the side! The fried chicken with five spice caramel had a crispyness that all chicken should aspire too! We will be back again and again ! Also, applause for the staff and culinary geniuses who carry out daily service, Bravo!

The dim sum was great. The Sunday brunch menu is a selection from all their menus, so you dont need to order dim sum. However, the dim sum was my favorite. Both the shrimp dumplings and the vegetable gyoza melt in your mouth. The service was superb. Two different servers helped us. Food was brought out as it was ready. This was nice since it split it up into multiple courses, like traditional dim sum. I loved the vibe and the music. Will definitely keep it on my short list for brunch.

It was finally nice to see Maketto recognized by the Michelin Guide in 2020 (even if was only in the “Bib Gourmand” category. The reviewers nailed it when describing Maketto: its the love child of the hip gods of fashion and food.I first became familiar with Erik Bruner-Yang in 2012 when Toki Underground had exploded onto the scene. There was finally a spot that served DC’s void for quality ramen and it did it all while playing highly curated tunes in a chic, punk-inspired bungalow. When Erik had just opened Maketto in 2015 with the help of Fundrise (a democratized real estate company) I was able to sit down with him to talk about the experience and about the future for Maketto. Not only are you getting a top notch interpretation of Cambodian and Taiwanese cooking, but Maketto is so much more. It’s a 6,000 ft. communal marketplace that features high fashion, craft cocktails, some of DC’s best coffee, an events courtyard, and a roof deck. It’s not just a restaurant, it’s a living, breathing part of the community.Erik and the team have always branded Maketto as “your home” and it truly is.(P.S. - Last photo of Jazz recs from superstar bartender Mr. Rob Stokes of October 71 - always a pleasure!)

Came here on a recommendation from a friend, today 7/24/2021 @ 6:10 pm. Im here from New York just taking in the sites. No sooner do I walk into the restaurant, the greeter begins to tell me that dogs are not allowed, when my son points out to him that it is a service dog. My dog has all the credentials to prove that he is a service dog. He then tells us to wait a minute and goes to speak to whom I believe to be the owner of the restaurant.Mind you this is a two floor establishment and is basically EMPTY.But now the greeter returns to tell us that they are completely booked and would not be able to seat us till after 9:30 pm.This was simply a very clear act of discrimination against a person having a service dog with him.He clearly could have sat us down on one of the many empty tables, but chose to give us this lame excuse to have us leave. Please I ask that you not support this establishment, and I hope that eventually someone locally will file a suit of discrimination against this restaurant.

Updated Feb 12, 2017:Back after several months for a coffee. Presentation was excellent, clearly an area where Maketto wants to make a difference. Coffees came with a mini-cup of sparkling water (not sure if necessary, I dont drink sparkling water). Ordered my usual soy latte, it was ok, a bit watery, but sufficient. The price is a deterrent, however, to making this a regular coffee spot. It is one of the most expensive coffees in the city - $6.05 for a soy latte! (TCB on 17/M by comparison is $4.88).****Excellent Asian cuisine, one of the few in DC. Enjoyed the crispy dumplings, wok fried noodles, Chinese broccoli and fried chicken. Concept of the restaurant is also interesting - modern, part cafe, part bar, part restaurant, part clothes store (!). Definitely worth checking out!

Review №98

Ill start by saying that the food is tasty, albeit pretty expensive for the portions. But the real reason I gave the place 2 stars is because of two things, one the restaurant has complete control over, and one the restaurant chose to do nothing about. The ordering system was designed (poorly) for the height of covid. Everyone scans the QR code and can review the menu from their phone, and order from their phone. But then that means everyone at the table has to set up their own payments, and it really just makes dining as a family more difficult, no option for communally ordering for the whole table and paying at the end. And, cause its 2021 and people think they are justified charging for everything, this system that makes life more difficult charges a fee for every item ordered, and then gratuity is automatically included on the bill. So in practice you are charged a fee to use a system that removes the waiter from the dining experience, and then you are forced to give a set tip to the servers that have done the bare minimum of service. Frankly, I think this practice hurts the waiters, everyone I know has been tipping above and beyond as a recognition of covid. But when there is mandatory gratuity (which really should just be factored into the price of the food so as to not be purposefully deceiving), it takes away my incentive to leave what would have been a larger tip. Our waiter did his best impression of a pre-covid server and that was very much appreciated, and with that effort he should have been given the opportunity to get a bigger tip, but the restaurant wants to try to sneak charges in instead. The ordering system is a huge detraction from the dining experience, and dining out is as much about the food as the experience. Hopefully Maketto will realize this soon.Second was an incident that occurred which was beyond Makettos ability to control, but their reaction to it was not.A homeless man, who appeared to be mentally unstable came into the restaurant demanding shoes. The staff allowed him to have free reign for minutes, and only when he got within two feet of our table did one member of the staff actually step up and do more than threaten to call the police. It was a difficult situation, I acknowledge that, but there were numerous staff members who walked away, and left their customers exposed. I had to be ready to protect the members of my family cause the restaurant was not going to do anything with the angry and increasingly aggressive homeless person. All of that situation was difficult, and I was disappointed the staff did not react better, but I do know it is not a situation that they were likely trained for. Still, poorly executed by them. However, where they truly failed in their service was after the homeless man made his way out of the restaurant. There was no acknowledgement from the staff, no apology, no checking in on their customers to make sure they were okay or remained satisfied with their dining experience. The term service industry did not apply that night, and the premium we paid for the privilege of going out to dinner was not worth the experience. I hope management/ownership reviews the circumstances and improves the dining experience for future customers, because the place and people seem otherwise great. But as it is, I have no desire to go back and cannot recommend the restaurant to anyone.

The menu was varied enough that everyone found something they liked, and while it was expensive for us, it was decidedly a decadent dining diorama. Delirious denizens dined and drunk derisively
