Great spinach and cheese puffs and good coffee. Decent breakfast sandwiches (all types). When I want a breakfast that picks me up, I stop here.Note: get here early (before 10) if you want the puff pastry, sometimes they run out.

This place used to be a theater. Now it’s a great place for bacon egg and cheese on a bagel. Good coffee and other morning delights! Creative sandwiches. Ethiopian food too!!

Poor service. The cashier was on her phone and didn’t even greet me when I entered the establishment. The bagels are mediocre at best. There are much better places in the area such as Big Bear Cafe.

This is the best place in the city to get bagels - they ship them in right from NJ & although you can tell theyve been frozen, they are still just as good! Their sandwiches are AMAZING - fresh & so delicious - they quality of ingredients they use must do something for them. Not only that - but they give you a lot of Meat/egg/Cheese on the sandwich for the price. Also - the coffee is great - not sure where they get that from, but its really really good & the the service is always fast & friendly! highly recommend!

Disappointing first visit 🙁 Almond croissant was NOT fresh at 10 AM Friday. Very hard. Almond filling fell out in a lump. I really wanted to like this neighborhood bakery 💔

It was ok, bagels were chewy and not in that good bagel way and the toppings were minimal. We got a sausage and egg, and a lox breakfast bagels and they were both 80/20 bagel to toppings ratio at best. The people were great and the bakery is very nice but would not be my go to for breakfast bagels.

Millenials and Gen-Zers: They dont have oat milk!Aside from that, I love this place. Sylvan cafe is a gentle yet confident reminder that communities are fueled by their local businesses. The Ethiopian-run business has endless character and sweet employees. They have traditional Ethiopian dishes as well as any of the sandwiches and pastries you would expect from a typical cafe. The bagel sandwiches are great and I have never had a bad experience here.

Sylvan is my go to spot for breakfast sandwiches and great ethiopian coffee. Staff is always friendly and their food is on point and over stuffed (in a good way). If you are in bloomingdale and need a quick and delicious breakfast, this is the place to be.

Excellent breakfast bagels! Two bagel sandwiches and coffee for a little under $20, and for a solid-quality sandwich at that. Good cheese and meat options, and they dont skimp on them either. No flabby bacon here!

Put order in online through their site and received a confirmation email. I tried to call them and no one answered. Delivery person showed up and order was not fulfilled. They said that they do not accept order through their website even though it has an order online option. Very frustrating experience

This is a delightful little shop that needs to become more famous than it is. The bagels are delicious and the presentation is top notch. I routinely get an everything bagel with egg and cheese and Im rarely happier. The service is quick and friendly. Call Your Mother is great, but this place is Bloomfields own hidden gem.

I love everything about Sylvan! Really delicious bagels and pastries, top notch customer service. One of my favorite local spots in the Eckington/Bloomingdale area.

I come here typically 4-5 days a week. The coffee is great. The staff is truly remarkable. My absolute favorite neighborhood place, they make my day start on the bright side. If you come grab a bagel sandwich, always wonderful, but grab one of the fruit filled croissants, if you are too full, save it and you can thank me later!

Great fresh breads and breakfast sandwiches. They have a decent selection of pastries and usually five varieties of gourmet cupcakes. Wish they did cheese danishes! Regardless this place is a great local bakery.EDIT: as of recently, they no longer bake bread loafs, only baguettes.

This is a lovely spot we visited just across the street from our Air BnB.... Coffee was GREAT and they welcomed us with a smile. It was an unexpected treat when we found out they had gluten free bagels ❤️

Tasty and sorely needed in Bloomingdale, this bakery is the only game in town and absolutely delightful. Only thing is that it can take a LONG time for your food (has for me on every occasion) because maybe they arent expecting customers in any amount of volume, but the staff are super friendly. With slight improvement, this will be a neighborhood gem.

Great neighborhood spot in Bloomingdale DC. They have great bagels panini sandwiches breakfast sandwiches and coffee. The muffins and pastries are okay. Staff is always really friendly. Seating is limited as the place is small. lots of locals will be here in the morning and throughout the day.

So glad these guys came, fresh goodies and breakfast sandwiches made to order!! They also make my favorite: ham and cheese croissants. And its not just a breath of ham like at some places. Absolute gem, just dont expect a quick in and out unless you are buying from the premades.

I struggled, with 3 or 4 stars...For Sylvan Cafes food, you see, is amazing. Fresh bagels and delicious, rich muffins. Get a breakfast sandwich ON one of their bagels and youll be ruined for all others - Sylvan isnt stingy, with the cheese, or the eggs, or the meat or the avocado.What they really ought do is improve their service, which is slow even by DC standards. 20+ minute waits with two people on line isnt logical, and seems unnecessary.Perfect for lazy weekend mornings when youre not in a hurry.

Got a fresh decaf Americano coffee and fairly tasty ham and cheese croissant for total of $5.10 (both small size). So quite pleased with a lunch time snack here as there really isnt that much around at this intersection for a snack lunch..

The sausage, egg, and cheese bagel had barely any cream cheese. I added avocado for $1.50, which was too hard. Theres only 4 choices of bagel and 2 choices of cream cheese. Disappointed.

I have an addiction- chocolate croissants. Believe me when I tell you Ive probably had almost every single chocolate croissant in the city. Heck, probably in the entire DMV area. Theres something about the perfectly baked dough filled with warm, oozing chocolate inside. Wow. I can taste it now.That being said, there are two chocolate croissants Ive had in the DMV area that I crave. The first is at Maketto on H Street NE early in the morning the moment they come out of the oven. The other is at Sylvan Cafe and Bakery in Bloomingdale. If you arrive by 9AM, they are still warm. Bits of chocolate are baked into the dough so even before you get to the center, youre tasting chocolate. Not sure if theres lemon in it, but I tasted a slight hint of it. I am not a fan of lemon in my pastry, but it was so slight it brought out the flavor of the chocolate more.If youre like me, you MUST stop by for a chocolate croissant. If youre not like me, still stop by for a latte and/or a breakfast bagel sandwich. It comes out warm and have a variety of flavors and options.The space itself is small with two window tables with five stools total. However, its usually empty so if you need a place to work, there are outlets and free, strong wifi with no network password required.Just moments being here, you can tell its locals who stop in, which is a good sign. Theres also a piano inside for anyone to play. So quirky and so great!

Coffee was disappointing. Ordered an almond latte, which turned out to be a very watery coffee with bubbles on top. No toilet here either, which is unusual for DC cafes. Doesnt cost much to build a toilet. Staff is very friendly, however.
